I loved this book! Every bit of foreshadowing had a resolution. The authors did a great job of raising the tension and I wasn't sure which of the ladies was the liar. When the "bad guy" was finally revealed, it was a surprise. I won't go through the plot because you can find it above, but I could not put this book down until it was finished. I loved Romeo and was glad that nothing bad happened to him.
Avery, a therapist who has lost her license, has a 10 step program to help couples and individuals solve their problems. Her methods involve her deep involvement in their lives. One has been a whistleblower, and that company’s continuing efforts to learn who it is puts her in some jeopardy. The couple she is treating have too many secrets, which leads to a terrific set of twists in the end, though tying the two pieces together is a little convoluted. It’s wonderfully well written, and a true pager turner.
Well look at me actually reading an ARC way before the release date! *pats myself on the back* 🤣 Greer & Sarah really know how to engage the reader and I spent the majority of my evening last night sipping whiskey and reading 80% of the book. Why didn't I finish it last night? Too much whiskey... oopsie. I was glued to the pages though!
I don't think this book has the panache that their other works have but I appreciate this being more suspenseful and less in your face. I'm not sure how ethical it is for a therapist (Avery) who has lost her license to continue to help people but I suppose if her clients know that she is unlicensed then who am I to judge? This ten step program she has seems a bit odd as is her crossing boundaries she probably shouldn't. BUT, I do love the idea of all of this. I will say that there were far too many characters involved but I absolutely didn't see the final resolution coming. Bow tied too neatly but still looks good, if you know what I mean.
I definitely like Avery's character once I got to know her. But my favorites were Bennett and Roman. Once again these authors bring us an easy to read, well written book. While this is slower paced than their other works, we still receive a layered, more character than plot driven story that I found very entertaining. Every marriage has secrets. Every person has secrets. What are YOU hiding? Grab that popcorn, an adult beverage and a dozen roses, or a tin of nuts. 😉 This will have you looking at therapy in a new way.. and just might get you to go rescue a pet.
An intriguing mystery novel with lots of twists & turns and plenty of red herrings along the way.
Avery Chambers is a former therapist who specializes in couples therapy. She lost her license a few months ago due to her out of the box methods and she has decided to work privately, and take on clients who want to avail her services. She guarantees that in 10 intensive sessions, she will be able to solve the couple’s problems.
Marissa Bishop contacts Avery for couples therapy, as she and her husband Matthew have been having problems- ever since Matthew found out that Marissa had been intimate with another man.
Marissa is a beautiful and chic woman who runs a boutique and Matthew is equally good looking and successful. Outwardly, they seem like the perfect couple, but internally they’ve been going through some marital distress.
Avery decides to counsel the couple in her 10 sessions and informs them that her methods are quite unique and not like the average therapist.
From the get go, Avery feels that Marissa is hiding a key piece of information from her. Marissa starts getting threatening messages and her husband is attacked and beaten by someone one day.
Avery is also going through a tough time in her life as big pharma people are after her. They want to get some information from her, due to something that happened in the past.
The story is fast paced and kept my attention.
The characters are well fleshed out & two dimensional.
I would definitely recommend this book for mystery and thriller fans. The way everything fits together in the end is great and offers a satisfying ending.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advance reader’s copy of the book for an honest review.
As in ‘The Wife Between Us, this duo of writers knows how to spin a tale where nothing is as it seems. Appearances lie, Characters lie. Alliances lie. Even the pages lie. With only a handful of players, including Romeo the dog who was the only authentic one, that’s a hard task to keep the reader on their toes and one the authors did extremely well as I kept my head buried in the pages until the unexpected payoff. Clever chapters allowed us to switch allegiance from one party to the other. I hope there is a follow up novel with Avery, the unorthodox counselor at the heart of the book (plus that would mean Romeo will be back). Another massive hit for Hendricks/Pekkanen.
Once again the writing duo of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen do not disappoint! The Golden Couple is a domestic thriller about a "perfect" couple who go into therapy for infidelity and the therapists unconventional therapy. And of course there are lots of twists and turns and some major secrets revealed.
The writing style and pace of this book needed a quick read and I would definitely recommend!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this Arc and exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book (as I love all their other books!) and I’m sad that it’s over. Loved the characters, loved the style of writing, loved the plot twists, loved the dog!! I devoured it until the last page. Easy 5 stars!
The golden writing wackadoodleduo of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is back with a new domestic thriller about an unlicensed therapist named Avery who tries to save the marriage of some Pottery Barn-esque one percenters after the wife knocks (posh, suede, ankle) boots with another man.
Avery gets ALLLLLLL up in their business as she implements her controversial 10-session method of rogue psychology. She follows them, trolls them online, and snoops around their Washington DC neighborhood to see what’s making the time bomb of their marriage tick. There are a ton of characters, a lot of red herrings, and a load of (mostly) resolved loose threads.
Now WHY Avery cares so much about helping these people stay married I cannot tell you. It’s like she’s a dogged detective trying to find a missing relative or a lawyer attempting to get her sister off death row. What I can tell you is that I got totally engrossed in her attempts to do so, and “Hendanen” have delivered another page-turning read. If you enjoyed their previous three suspense novels, you’ll enjoy this one too.
Does The Golden Couple deserve a gold medal? Nah. But it sure has earned a participation award.
My thanks to the authors and St. Martins Press for the advance readers copy to review via NetGalley. The Golden Couple is slated for US publication in March 2022.
I received an ARC of The Golden Couple in exchange for my honest review. I enjoyed the suspense as I was turning the pages to reach the end of the book. Matthew and Marissa, the golden couple, go to Avery for therapy. Avery and Marissa alternate telling us the story. Marissa has been unfaithful and wants to repair her relationship with Matthew. Will it be possible if they follow Avery's unconventional 10 session plan. People are keeping secrets and telling lies. I will look for other titles written by these authors.
***4.5 stars ***
Expected Publication: March 2022
Once again Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen do not disappoint. These two together are always a success and whenever something is released by them I stop all other reading. I always expect great plot twists and try to figure it out before the end, which I’m never able to do with these two.
The golden couple is about a couple, Marissa and Matt dealing with infidelity. They hire Avery, a therapist to help mend their relationship and work through their problems. But of course lots of secrets are unraveled along the way. Highly recommend !
Special thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for allowing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another twisty, entertaining winner!
Therapist Avery has a 10 session plan. Follow it and you'll be fixed, but golden couple Matthew and Marissa may prove challenging. After Marissa cheats, she and Matthew come to Avery for help, but a surge of secrets may actually still be hidden.
The pair of authors write enthralling, interesting books, and the latest is another winner.
Thanks to NetGalley.com, the authors, and publisher for my advance copy.
Another great book by this author duo! I have read all 3 of their books now and have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one.
This was a fast paced and twisty story about secrets in a marriage and everything that can go wrong. Enter Avery, the unconventional therapist, who was quite the character, I would like to see her in future books.
This one definitely had me turning the pages and wanting to know what was happening and how it all would play out. Told from the perspectives of Marissa and Avery, I was equally interested in both of their characters.
Would definitely recommend to those who enjoy this genre. I can't wait to see what they come up with next! 4 stars!
A big thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book!
Avery Chambers has unusual tactics to try to "fix" her clients' problems and she thinks that fixing Marissa and Matthew Bishop's marriage will be no different. However, their case leads to more twists and turns than even she could have anticipated. Hendricks and Pekkanen tell the story from multiple perspectives and the format works well. The Golden Couple is a definite page turner and the only drawback was that there were so many coincidences it was a bit implausible.
I have read other books by these authors and this one was just a good. There was a great twist and the entire book kept me engaged. Highly recommend!
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have done it again. But I think The Golden Couple has worked its way to the number one spot on my favorite book of theirs.
Yesterday, I made a mistake. I took a 15-minute break from work and decided it was finally time to pick this book up. Well, I had to go back to work, and I was miserable. All I could think about was going home and reading. I have not had a book invade my mind like that in a long time.
Now let me tell you, this is by far one of the BEST thrillers I have read. It had everything you could ask for in a thriller. It has a good mystery, interesting characters, and a satisfying ending. It just kept ticking all my boxes. I neglected everything on my day off so I could get this finished. And well no regrets there.
If you are a fan of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, then I think you are going to enjoy this one. It’s by far one of my favorites of theirs. And if you haven’t read one of their books before, then I highly suggest this one!
This is a story of a couple who goes to see an unconventional therapist. I felt that the therapist unique role was intriguing. I was invested in the characters and the mystery. This was an excellent, well written book with brr we believable, three dimensional characters.
I freaking LOVED this book!!! I’ve read everything Sarah and Greer have written and before this one, my favorite was The Wife Between Us but I think this just might tie that book! So much mystery and intrigue as we try to figure out who to trust and who is being honest and who isn’t! As always, I love multiple POV and I love that Avery is in first person. (Also Avery happens to be one of my absolute favorite names as it’s one of my own daughters’ name!) So much build up and so many clues scattered throughout had me loving every minute and turning pages long into the night as I devoured this book in a matter of hours! I just could not put it down! This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and it far surpassed how good I expected it to be!
This was an excellent read. Just when I thought I might have it figured out a new twist would happen. Tough to put down.
Marissa and Matthew Bishop are the Golden Couple, the envy of all who know them. Attractive, wealthy, with an adorable son, they are the IT couple of the DC suburbs. Until Marissa cheats on Matthew...
Desperate to save her marriage, Marissa convinces Matthew to seek counseling with renowned ex-therapist Avery Chambers. Why an ex-therapist, you might ask? Well, let's just say that Avery's unconventional methods have resulted in her losing her license. However, her ten session method of curing all issues has ensured that she continues to be one of the most sought after "therapists" in the area.
Avery soon realizes that she her work cut out for her with the Bishops. As they delve into the reasons for Marissa's infidelity, it soon becomes clear that both of the Bishops are harboring secrets that lead back to their teenage years. As a matter of fact, some of these secrets are murderous in nature...
The second half of the book is when the twists and turns really begin. Who can the Bishops trust? For that matter, who can Avery trust? For it appears that she is now in danger as well. The clock is ticking as the sessions continue. Will this Golden Couple be tarnished for good?
The Golden Couple is a book that I could not put down. Read it from cover to cover in three days!
