Princess Fuzzypants here: Matthew and Marisa are the golden couple. Attractive, successful, endowed with so many gifts, they are envied and respected by many. But looks can be deceiving, so terribly deceiving. At the first session they book with an unorthodox therapist, Marisa drops an unexpected bombshell. She has slept with another man but is riddled with guilt and remorse. Matthew reacts like the man betrayed that he is but through the work they do with Avery, the therapist, they seem to be making progress in rebuilding their marriage. Each chapter is from the POV of either Marisa or Avery and we watch as lie after lie is revealed until the more egregious lie of all, the name of the man with whom Marisa slept is unravelled.
But both Avery and Marisa will discover there are more lies. Worse lies. Deadly lies and while they have struggled under the illusion that they had some control, they are shocked when they finally learn the truth, the whole truth. It will shake them to their core. And it may cost them everything.
The tale is beautifully constructed as the reader learns each new bit of information piece by piece, intense moment by intense moment. The reader is then knocked over when those final most deeply hidden secrets are revealed and the outcome of the story is anything but certain. It was tight and taut and kept me riveted every step of the way. Really good read. Five purrs and two paws up.
Sadly I just couldn’t get into this book.
The alternating perspectives were a little confusing, and I despised the main character. I don’t have much more to say other than it wasn’t for me.
I do think others would find it much more enjoyable though.
Thank you to @stmartinspress and #netgalley for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another hit by Hendricks and Pekkanen! I am a big fan of their books, and this one didn't disappoint me either.
Think of any suburban couple that you know. On the outside, it looks like a marriage made in Heaven, until it isn't. Marissa and Matthew are wealthy Washington suburbanites who are struggling with their marriage. They decide to go see Avery, a non-licensed therapist who specializes in controversial therapy. Red flag for you? Yes, me too, but not for Marissa and Matthew because they were desperate. Avery does everything she can to involve herself in her client's lives, even if it's obtrusive.
Since this is a psychological thriller, you know this isn't going to go well. The authors did a great job of making the characters relatable, and the story is told through the three different perspectives.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers or enjoyed some of their other books like THE WIFE BETWEEN US, then you will enjoy THE GOLDEN COUPLE also.
I gave this book four out of five stars. It would have been five stars, but I thought it wrapped up a little too quickly.
I was given this book for my honest review.
I enjoyed this fast read! The concept that Avery can fix her clients in 10 sessions grabbed me right away and I didn’t want to put the book down. I didn’t trust anyone the entire book and I loved all the twists until the very end! This is definitely a must read for those who enjoy the thriller/suspense genre!
This is one of their best ones yet! I loved the premise of the ex therapist curing people in 10 sessions.
I devoured An Anonymous Girl and The Wife Between Us, but I could not get through this book. It was way too much of a slow burn compared to the author/editor duo's previous works. DNF around 60% .
This book was good but not quite as good as the reviews said. I liked the suspense and how it kept me guessing but I can't really say that I liked any of the characters. It did not live up to the hype for me.
When I see these two authours I also buy or try to review their books. I love how they write.
This book was good and great at the same time. It was good, but a lot of repetition in the book about things we already knew about the characters. Also, the therapist was a bit too friendly with the family. Showing up at weird places like she was one of the couples close friends. Not believable but entertaining. It was great to find out who done it! I did not see it coming and their were so many clues I did not see.
I was originally going to give this book a 3 but changed it to a 4 because the ending was so good. I am giving it a 4 because of the repetitiveness of the characters. Well done ladies! I look forward to your next book.
I love this author duo! Another solid thriller that kept me guessing till the end. I was super interested in Avery— I would read a whole book focused on just her and her rogue therapy practices. I was definitely more interested in Avery’s story than the titular golden couple. I was a bit bored by them at times. I will continue to read everything these authors put out!
I finished this book in a day I was sneaking pages in whenever I got the chance!
Avery is a former therapist who lost her license due to some unethical actions. She claims that she can help resolve any of your problems in just ten sessions, and she’s very selective on who she chooses as her patients.
Marissa and Matthew are married and attending their first session with Avery. Marissa was given Avery’s information by a friend and she hopes being in a session with Avery will help her finally reveal her secret to Matthew. Marissa has been unfaithful and she needs to come clean. On the outside Marissa and Matthew appear to be the “golden couple”, they have one son Bennett whose eight, Matthew is a workaholic and Marissa owns her own boutique shop and has one assistant Polly. Underneath their perfection we soon see there are many cracks. We follow along as they try to work through their problems, hiding in the background it appears that someone wants to continue to cause issues with this golden couple, but who? This was a great domestic thriller, I was glued to the pages and I was couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next!
Great book, love this author and how they can keep my attention to the end! The plot is well developed, characters are believable and they obviously paid attention to detail to make the story worth your time to read.
Hendricks and Pekkanen have done it again. They are captured my attention with a suspenseful thriller that had me guessing until the end of the story. I love the way they tell the story from 2 Pods and have us tricked into thinking we know what is going on. The story center around Marissa, Matthew and their Therapist Avery who is trying to help them salvage their marriage. Unbeknownst to them they are tied together through a cast of characters that include Polly, Skip and Natalie. Just when you thought you knew what was going on the author's throw a new twist at you. Avery burrows her way into her client's lives in a way you would not expect. Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own and freely given.
Oh my word this book was freaking awesome. I devoured it and can’t recommend it highly enough. %9 so good.
Tight storytelling that paces well and keeps you guessing, even as the layers pull back to the final twist.
This was a quick listen. I enjoyed it but figured it out rather quickly. Even with that being said I still enjoyed it. Not my favorite by this dynamic duo but if you’re looking for a fast paced, quick read this one is it. The narrator definitely kept me invested to the very end.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for advance audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
So good. Proves it's a small world, or does it?!? Therapist without a license and the golden couple, successful lawyer and a successful boutique owner. Perfect life, right? But there are so many secrets, even the therapist has them. Twisty turny domestic mystery. And a dog named Romeo! Perfect
The premise to The Golden Couple seemed very interesting. However, it was very slow moving. The characters seem unlikable. Still, the novel is very well-written. I recommend this fans of S. J. Watson, Gillian Flynn, and Paula Hawkins!
I wanted to love this book, I wanted to love every book by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. But, I have found I am just not a fan of their work. I can't say the writing is bad, Because, Lets face it, Who am I to judge? But, I feel like The Golden Couple's Premise has been done and done and redone again. I guess when I read a thriller novel in today's day in age, I want to find something that sticks out, and not the same trope everyone has done and burnt out. If thriller reading and the psychiatrist trope is for you then definitely read this as it might be a favorite for you. I just didn't engage with the story.
3.5 stars - The Golden Couple is my first thriller by Hendricks and Pekkanen and won't be my last. Marisa and Matthew Bishop are a balanced enviable yet relatable couple - a cheating incident brings them to the office of a therapist caught up on scandal. The I thought I had a few twists resolved but I was wrong half the time - it was the perfect beach week read! Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #TheGoldenCouple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah and Pekkanen.
I will probably always pick up books by this duo. Their books do not disappoint and this one was no exception.
Solid domestic suspense.
I LOVE a dual perspective novel, and this one was perfect because we get two very different and interesting characters. Very well written and fleshed out women,
I also love the slow unfolding of the drama this book brings. A slow burn is a hit or miss for me and this is a hit.
If you are looking for a page turning domestic suspense this is definitely one you need to pick up.
