Thank you to #Netgalley for the ARC ebook.
Another good read by Sally Hepworth. This one had a slower start for me than "The Good Sister," so it took me a few days to get into it. Things pick up around a third of the way in.
Hepworth's writing style is similar to Liane Moriarty's. There are flashbacks and flashforwards to provide details for the story. This one isn't wrapped up until the very last page. All of the women seem to have a tragic backstory, which for me, felt a bit gratuitous; especially Rachel's. Although I do understand the intent behind this for the storyline.
Overall, I would call it "good," but not "great."
Sally Hepworth has written some of my favorite books and again she has not disappointed! The story is told from the point of view of three characters: sisters Rachel and Tully and Heather, who is engaged to their dad. This isn’t one of those books where the characters grow and develop but rather where their stories and personalities are revealed slowly. And what a fascinating journey it is!
I loved how each chapter ended with a tidbit of information that would keep you hooked to keep reading and the ending is definitely one I’m still thinking about days later!
Definitely put this on your tbr shelf.
Thank you to netgalley and St Martin’s Press for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first experience with Hepworth’s storytelling. A slow burn that I couldn’t put down. The characters each had their fair share of issues that kept me questioning how they truly fit the narrative. Adding the backlist to my TBR immediately.
This book hooked me right away. The character development was great, and the plotline was intriguing. It kept me guessing up until the last page. I couldn't put the book down - great read! (And I enjoyed the author's note at the end that revealed her personal connection to parts of the story) Highly recommend!
Talk about family drama! This book was full of secrets up until the very end. Told between alternating points of views, we begin to learn more about the Ashton family and the things they’ve kept from one another over the years.
This one had me second guessing the truth until the very end. More family drama than psychological thriller, but a great read! Definitely recommend picking it up when it releases in 2022. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my review!
This story starts off at a wedding between Stephen and Heather.. but let’s first mention that Heather is a year younger than Stephen’s youngest Daughter.
Tully & Rachel are the daughters of Stephen. Their father is getting remarried while still married to their mom, Pam, who is in a nursing home due to aggressive dementia.
As If this start isn’t juicy enough, each daughter comes with their own baggage and issues. Even Heather has a secret of her own.
After the girls get a hint that their dad may not be who he says he is, they take it upon themselves to get down to the very truth, or so they think.
I thought I had this booked figured out, and a few times I could predict what would happen. The ending nearly knocked me out and I did not see that coming!
If you’re a fan of a good domestic thriller, make sure to get your hands on this April 5, 2022!
Wowza. Wowza, wowza! Another mind blowing read from Sally Hepworth, whom is definitely an author to watch if you love this genre! This book has her unique, clever, and amazing writing style, which depicts characters and the plot so realistically, you almost feel as though you’re reading about friends! Fast paced, unputdownable, and hangover inducing! Packed full of the things us thrill seekers love! Highly, highly recommend for both those new to Hepworth or old fans, as I’m sure it’ll give you exactly what you’re craving and more!
Will buzz around platforms and use top Amazon reviewer number on release!
Oh My Goodness! This is such an amazing novel!
Every one of the characters in this story has their own dysfunctions and intense secrets creating a suspenseful, intriguing thriller that I was totally absorbed in.
These characters all have an amazing story to reveal!
Tell me--- How does Stephen marry Heather ,who is the same age as his daughters? Not only that,
but he is already married! Yes, he is!
OK--- his wife DOES have dementia, and is now in a healthcare facility, BUT WOAH!
Each of Stephen's daughter's have their own situations that have been hidden as does Stephen's future bride that is marrying a man that could be her father?
This book is so well detailed and put together that you cannot help but love it!
Sally Hepworth sure has a way with words and ideas! It is an excellent story
10 stars!
The Younger Wife is a family drama/thriller that was SO fun to read! The story centers around two sisters, each with their own struggles and challenges, who have to navigate their father falling in love and planning to marry a younger woman- all while his wife/their mother is in a facility for dementia. See what I mean?!
This is my third novel by Sally Hepworth and it did not disappoint! I loved the writing style, the different points of view, how the story begins and ends at the wedding, and all the twists and turns in between.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press, and Sally Hepworth for my advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
Whodunnit? Each suspect has means and motive. Suppressed memories, childhood traumas, vendettas. Power of suggestion over reality? This book keeps the reader guessing. Suspense at its finest.
This was an awesome read. One of the best I’ve read in awhile. Very plausible and no weird ending. This dysfunctional family kept me reading until midnight. One of the best new books. #Netgalley.
I always believe it impossible for Sally to outdo her previous novel but alas, she has done it again. The Younger Wife has everything readers look for in a mystery/thriller. While I deeply connected with the characters, I never stopped questioning each one until the very end. Even then, I was left with a shadow of "what if". Kudos to one of the best thriller writers on the scene for another home run!!
I was so excited to receive an ARC from St. Martin's Press! Everything I've read by this author I've loved, and this book was no exception. I read it from cover to cover in 24 hours!
Throughout the book, I was not sure whose account to trust. It's obvious someone wasn't the person they were making themselves out to be, but who is it? I didn't have it figured out until almost the very end, which is exactly how I like it.
* Thanks to St. Martin's Press for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I am actually mad that this book was written by a woman. I am all for a thriller with a twist at the end, but not when it involves this amount of gaslighting. Getting to the ending was fun, and the author does a great job of creating believable relationships between her characters. But the ending straight up ruined it. Just...awful awful choice.
How cliche - middle aged father of two divorces his incapacitated wife and decides to marry a woman the same age as his daughters. The daughters resent the younger woman and family drama ensues.
Cliche - yes.
Riveting story and writing that makes this a great read - YES.
Family drama and secrets abound for the daughters to unravel.
The second Mrs. - what is her reason for marrying a much older man, is he really her dream man?
What is the deal with Dad? Can he be trusted, is he so desperate to not be alone he will overlook the second Mrs's contribution to the explosive family dynamics?
Sally Hepworth never fails to engage me.This was a true page turner for me a book I could not put down. Two sisters their father marrying a younger woman their mother ill with dementia. The story so involving so well written will be recommending.#netgalley#st.Martinsbooks
What I liked most about this book was that it wasn't the typical *family with secrets* trope. Yes they all had secrets, and they all held on to them for way too long. But when they finally decided to spill the beans, they spilled the whole pot and told everyone. And they got therapy! Now that's a twist.
I read the book in an afternoon, partly because I couldn't put it down and partly because it was kinda short. And I really enjoyed it.
As always, I adored this Sally Hepworth novel!
The book opens at the wedding of Stephen Aston and Heather Wisher. Surrounding the couple at the alter are Stephen’s daughter’s Tully and Rachel, and unexpectedly Stephen’s ex-wife Pam. Strangely, Pam is holding a candlestick. A commotion of some kind proceeds in the back room where they sign the marriage license, and suddenly the celebrant appears, bloody and calling for help.
Stephen Aston- a heart surgeon; he is marrying Heather
Heather Wisher- younger than Rachel and Tully and about to be their stepmother
Rachel- a baker, who eats away the deep, unnamed, pain she experienced at 16.
Tully- a mother of two with husband Sonny. Tully is neurotic and going through a lot of life changes and is a kleptomaniac.
Pam- Stephen’s ex wife. She is in a care home with dementia.
Something I love about Hepworth’s novels is her stories are often the blend of some really intense soap opera, a love story, and a horrifying domestic suspense.
A lot of people said they didn’t like the ambiguous end to this novel, but it absolutely has a purpose which is called gaslighting. Gaslighting is the attempt to make someone doubt their own reality by making them believe something they experienced or saw didn’t happen. The end is representative to the journey of the victims; even after resolution, there is no closure.
Thank you to Sally Hepworth for writing this great piece of fiction, and to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review.
OMG, this book got me in the guts and never let go.
Who died at the wedding in the prologue? Was it one of the damaged but sympathetic daughters? Was it the bride? The ex-wife? Or was one of them the killer?
I couldn't put it down until I found out and dang...so worth the wait.
I have loved her previous books, and this one is just as good if not better! What a page turner! I could not put it down! Rachel and Tully are not happy when their dad announces his engagement, let alone to a much younger woman, especially since he's still married to their who's in a nursing home riddled with dementia. On the outside, things seem like bed of roses, but this family has secrets coming out of the woodwork. This is a must read!!
