Wuthering Heights was one of my favorite books in high school and was delightful tor re-visit as an adult! I love reading early versions of feminist literature, and Wuthering Heights fits that description. It's one of those books that everyone should read at some point. The prose is beautiful and sassy and the characters are three dimensional.
I've always loved this book and getting to read it again was grand! I loved the illustrations and falling back in love with a classic! Now I'm off to listen to some Kate Bush.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this lovely edition of the book!
This classic isn’t one of my favorites. I find nothing romantic between Catherine and Heathcliff as Heathcliff is absolutely unstable and unhinged in his quest for revenge.
The edition of the book is pretty. I thought the art was beautiful and added a nice touch to the pages.
I'd first like to thank NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review. To be honest, this book underwhelmed me. This may be my own personal fault, as I went into the story expecting more illustrations and of different types.
It includes beautiful illustrations of woodland creatures, flowers, and other nature-related items, but I was sadly expecting illustrations depicting more of the 19th century and items and people in the story. I saw another review saying the same thing and I think it really just depends on what you go in expecting. However, they are great in their own right and the cover is also very pretty. My favorite part of the book is the nameplate, but I don't know how useful it would be, as personally I never write my name in books.
Also, this is a review of the edition and not the book itself. Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite novels and is a 5 star read that I will forever recommend.
I hate leaving a negative review, because it really is a gorgeous book, I just don't think it's worth the price. However, if you love Wuthering Heights and would like a new copy to add to your collection, this one might just be for you.
Classic literature at its finest. I will be adopting this book into my course curriculum for AP English students.
I haven't ever read this classic or anything by Bronte so I was really excited to get a chance to finally knock this one off my to-be-read pile! Such a great read!!!
A beautiful rendition of the classic Wuthering Heights, I reviewed this book for the "extras" it provides, rather than the story itself, as it is one we all know.
The cover on this hardback, both front and back, appear to be gorgeous. The book is also filled to the brim in the margins with small but wonderful illustrations of flowers, birds, feathers, pinecones, and more. One page may be half filled with a handful of dandelion blossoms, while another with warblers on some tree branches. Butterflies, squirrels, owls, and acorns - nature in many forms of lovely watercolors. The artwork is indeed a beauteous accompaniment to the text.
The description of the book also mentions additional content to be included, such as four-color maps, letters, family trees, and sheet music, which I didn't see in the PDF copy I reviewed, so hopefully these neat-sounding features will be included in the actual hardback.
A big thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for providing an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for this review.
Thank you for my early review copy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I believe this book will be a huge bestseller.
This edition of everyone's beloved classic left me very underwhelmed. The illustration were decorative, small, and sporadic. Although beautiful, they didn't seem to enrich the story, nor were they specific to this piece of 19th century fiction. I was expecting some representations of the characters, architecture, or landscapes, and was left disappointed.
Wuthering Heights is my all time favourite classic, I cannot recommend this book enough and this edition and illustrations throughout are simply superb. I loved it and cannot wait for the book to be released to add to my ever-growing editions of Wuthering Heights.
The story is still a five-star one to me on this reread, but the illustrations are getting a lesser rating. And not because Marjolein Bastin's artwork isn't good, no. It's simply that her cheerful and happy-vibes style doesn't suit the Gothic and gloomy mood of the story. It should've had a design that mixed in with the atmosphere, the dark, windy moors, the eerie house, the violent passions of Cathy and Heathcliff; but the flowery drawings and the colour palette look incongruously jolly instead.
On top of the art style not matching the story, there's fewer illustrations than in the other editions I've read. It's still worth having if you like your Classics in pretty editions, but definitely would've used a better artistic design.
This book is a classic book, so I'm really reviewing the illustrated portion. It would be a beautiful print gift for a Jane Austen book lover. The illustrations are gorgeous watercolors of roses, wildflowers, botanicals, woodland creatures, which give it an antique feel. As much as I thought the illustrations were beautiful, I do feel like the book would have been further enhanced had there been illustrations for each chapter which captured elements of the story, characters or plot.
A beautifully illustrated copy of a well-loved story. I was already familiar with Wuthering Heights, but it has been a long time since I have read it, and this provided a welcomed opportunity to reread. The artwork of Marjolein Bastin makes this a delightful addition to any library of young readers or those who are being introduced to the classics. I love the small page embellishments like flowers, leaves and feathers. Other larger images of birds and trees are stunning and add so much color and texture to the pages. Nothing in the story has changed, just artistic beauty added to draw out the literary beauty of a timeless story.
I received a complimentary copy, with thanks, from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are solely my own and freely given.
Reading Wuthering Heights is a rite of passage for so many. Readers often come to it after reading Jane Eyre. I find WH to be the more complex read.
Yes, there are many editions of this novel and some of them are even free in e book form. But…to enjoy WH and really spend time with it, I think that a beautiful hardcover edition is the way to go.
Spend time with Catherine, Heathcliff and those around them. Experience the novel whether it is for the first or fifth time. And, consider doing it with this lush edition. You won’t be sorry.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
A new edition of a beloved classic. If you haven't read this, it is perfect for fans of classics, gothic fiction, and romance. The cover is beautiful and the illustrations are a lovely addition. This would be great to give as a gift to a book lover or classic lover.
Wuthering Heights is one of my all time favourite books, so to have a copy with the most beautiful illustrations is a real pleasure. These stunning illustrations are subtly peppered throughout the whole novel, providing a treat for the eyes. They in no way detract from what is already a beautiful story, but compliment and elevate it to something truly special.
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review
Love this edition so much!
It's such pure joy to read each page with the beautiful illustrations.
It will be worth the collection.
Looking forward to it.
Thank you, publishers, for the copy.
Beautiful illustrations on this classic novel! While I admit, wuthering heights isn't a favorite of mine- I did enjoy starting this fresh probably 15 years after I first read it. The illustrations are gorgeous though, and a collector of classic novels will be sure to enjoy this!
I'm really conflicted how to rate this. Rate Wuthering Heights itself? A definite five stars. Rate the drawing apart from the story? A definite five stars. They are beautiful and enchanting and... whimsical.
And you see the problem? Wuthering Heights is dark and broody. It deals with themes such as mental health, domestic violence, obsessive love, revenge. And I got bunny rabbits, and birds and flowers. I felt a disconnect between the beauty and whimsy of the drawing and the dark brooding story. I guess I was just hoping for dark pictures of the moors, Heathcliff's brooding face, Catherine rapping at the window in the dead of night.
Sigh.
In the end, I'm rating the book. I'm not rating how the drawings fit within the books.
I thought this illustrations would add more to the book but they were just pretty decoration. Which is fine. I would buy for a pretty edition but I wouldn’t call it an illustrated edition
