I think this is Bethany's best book yet! McKenna returns home in disgrace and is forced to appear cheerful at her sister's upcoming wedding events. We meet Nerdy Henry (the name says it all!) who is not quite like he was back in high school and then wait eagerly for them to fall in love. A great romcom with all the feels. A definite re-read.
Bethany Turner does it again! A sweet, clean rom-com with a nice dose of humor never fails to entertain. I absolutely adore Turner’s authorial voice. It’s like chatting with your “we’ve known each other since grade school “ BFF.
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book! McKenna is trying to figure out what her next steps will be when things go wrong at work. Old friend Henry comes back to her life, and I just loved their chemistry and history together. This was a sweet, fun read and I really enjoyed it!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it.
McKenna decides she’s going to teach her boss a lesson and heads home.
When she arrives, she reunites with a former classmate, Henry.
She’s not expecting the attraction she felt towards Henry, who was her academic rival while in high school.
She chooses to keep why she left NYC to herself for a bit while attending her younger sister’s engagement.
While researching some genealogy, Henry and McKenna become closer than ever while finding out the secrets of her family.
I read and reviewed this book, thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy – all opinions are my own. I just reviewed The Do-Over by Bethany Turner. #TheDoOver #NetGalley
This book was so good! I love love stories, but even more than that I love when they make the character a strong, empowered female. Also, I love when there's more to the storyline than just a love story. This book was all of that, and more, and it really sucked me in. I couldn't put it down!
This is the first book that I have read for this author. Bethany Turner s main character, McKenna Keaton tells her story with wit and heart. As long as she remembers, she has been driven and her dream since high school was to become a partner in a large prestigious law firm in NYC. Her dreams is in her grasp as she is called to meet the partners, but instead she is falsely accused of embezzlement. Knowing she is innocent, she goes home to Durham, while the investigation continues. She only confines in her older sister, Erica, who is married to McKenna's high school chum, Jared. Meanwhile, her younger sister is preparing for her wedding. McKenna had been so focused on her goal, that everything else had fallen by the wayside. Another high school chum is in town- Henry Blumenthal, aka Hank Blume a famous documentary filmmaker. Something else, McKenna learns: Henry had a crush on her in high school. Maybe he still does? This is definitely a book I would read again.
I read an ARC provided by NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
It took me a while to get used to the author's writing, but as I really liked the protagonist, I insisted on reading. I didn't regret it even though I thought the romance could have started earlier in the story.
This is a quite light hearted romance, and while I do enjoy romances I didn't really love this one. I found it difficult to connect with McKenna, and didn't enjoy reading much about her life.
When things are not going well, you need a book you can believe that dreams come true, good conquers all and junk like that. This is one of those.
I found this book to be just ok. I really didn't like McKenna, the main character. I felt that many of the decisions she made were immature and selfish. The family aspect was wonderful. They were a close knit family and McKenna just didn't fit in.
romcom with a heart - fun read, slow beginning
- childhood rivals to lovers
- femlead is over 30+ (which is rare in romcoms I've read!)
- small-town to city girl returns home
overall this was fun read!

The Do-Over by Bethany Turner
⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 320 / Genre: Romance
Forgoing a personal life for a professional one, McKenna Keaton is set on making senior partner in her law firm and nothing else matters. That is until she’s wrongfully accused of embezzling funds and is put on unpaid leave. Banished home until her innocence can be proven, she runs into old flame Henry Blumenthal, who now goes by Hank Blume and is an award-winning documentarian. Yada yada yada… romance is ignited but McKenna’s stubbornness and pride lead to misunderstandings until the inevitable conclusion. Your typical romcom formula.
Wasn’t bad but wasn’t awesome. A solid three stars for me.
Thank you @NetGalley for the advance copy of this book.
I liked the Do-Over a lot. Characters were relatable and I'm a sucker for a city girl returns to her hometown storylines. The book definitely picked up by the second half, first half was really slow and a lot of exposition. I would've preferred a little more showing instead of McKenna's life story within the first few chapters. The romance was great though and I really enjoyed the highs and lows between McKenna and her sisters. Overall, 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Bethany has mastered romcoms with all the nostalgia and she never fails to make me laugh.
I adored Henry. Here’s a quote to sum him up:
“Gorgeous, brilliant, fascinating, could pull off khaki, and he loved PBS.”
This sweet book has been out for over a week and it’s just such a charming read. Bethany’s books are always such treats and I consistently gobble them up the minute they’re available!
The audiobook is now on hoopla and the narration was well done. My mom and I started listening at the same time and we both really enjoyed ourselves. This was a phenomenal palette cleaners for me after a dark thriller.
Bethany Turner is a magical writer who delves deep into her characters feelings and relationships. Her books make me think as well as feel all the feels.
The Do- Over was no exception to feeling all of the feels. Throughout the book, I smiled, teared up, laughed, swooned (how dead is dead...in a good way) and, best of all, read passages out loud to my sister so I could spread the word on how great this book was. Henry was SUCH a loveable lead and I fell in love with him alongside McKenna. The supporting characters, especially Jared and Erica, were just as loveable.
I thoroughly enjoyed following McKenna and Henry's love story (and I loved the memories from them knowing each other in high school!), just as much as I loved the history of Henry's upcoming documentary on McKenna's family history.
At times, the story felt choppy and I wish we could've delved more into McKenna's career or her deepening relationship with her sisters, but overall, I adored the entire story.
This is a great book about picking yourself up and dusting yourself off. I really love second chances, so this was a great read.
This is about McKenna, a 38 year old an ambitious senior partner of high-end law firm, working hard to climb corporate ladders. Because of accusations about embezzling, he’s suspended and thus decides to go back to North Carolina to spend time with her family till the investigation goes on. At the very first night she bumps into her old high school enemy Henry who is a successful documentary maker. Henry had a huge crush on her during the school years and now it’s obvious old flames are about to rekindle!
This is a light-hearted romance with many side characters who're involved in the plot. I liked how charming and cute it was, though Mckenna was not exactly my favourite. She's in her mid thirties but the fact that she is portrayed as clueless about human emotions was baffling.
It’s a sweet but very predictable love story that drags a little towards the end.
Thanks NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for a ARC in exchange of an honest, unbiased review.
The do over provides wisdom, emotions, family and romance.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have yet to find a Bethany Turner novel that I just didn't love, and The Do-Over is no exception!
I have adored Will Whitaker, and Max Cavanaugh, but I have decided that Henry Blumenthal is my favorite. Probably because he was compared to my favorite actor of all time Robert Redford. And if that wasn't enough there were references to Up Close and Personal from the 90's so I spent a weekend indulging in that fabulous movie, and I blame it all on Bethany Turner. 😂😂😂
Quote: "Can you put feminism on hold for just a minute and focus on the all-that-is-good-and-wonderful-in-this-world beauty of Robert Redford?"
While this was a contemporary rom-com Ms. Turner included an ancestry mystery around McKenna's family. McKenna's father, Scott, was a hoot with his research of their family tree.
All of the characters were fun, real, and engaging. The romance between McKenna and Henry was definitely Ms. Turner's signature swoony style.
This is a first-rate read and perfect for the beach, so grab a copy and toss it in your beach bag!

"You know what you want, and you know who you are. And you're the only one who needs to."
McKenna Keaton has always had her life together. From a young age, she had her whole path planned out that would lead her to become a successful lawyer. Now that she is super close to getting that senior partnership at her law firm, nothing is getting in her way. But what happens when she gets accused for embezzlement instead? She's forced to step away from the firm for a bit while the investigation carries out, and to save money while being on her unpaid leave, sublets her apartment in New York City and goes back home to North Carolina. This was not apart of her plan to success, causing McKenna to step back and pay attention to the things going on in her family that she's been missing out on. Meanwhile, when she's back in her hometown, she meets her old classmate, Henry, who is now the golden boy of Durham. From being the shy nerd to an extremely popular documentarian, McKenna starts to wonder whether life is really about pre-planned routes and journeys, or if it's really about living in the moment, doing your best, and just seeing where it all takes you. She also learns that life is more than just promotions and salaries; when you're isolating yourself from the people who care about you most, is it really worth it in the end? A wonderful book about new beginnings, new lifestyles, and learning that LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE BUSY MAKING OTHER PLANS.
