I hadn't realised this was the first book in a series but on finishing it I am glad to find out there is more the come!

I found Christina irritating and didn't enjoy her part of the story in Capri as much as that of her daughters during the war. Jessie especially I found a strong character with a good storyline. Etta, a bit like her Mother, was a bit washy-washy and silly.

I was disappointed that the end of the war years was glossed over and hardly mentioned and think for such an important date in history was worthy of more reading.

The storyline threw up lots of surprises which kept the reader interested until the end.

1913 London and the three Fry sisters are dreaming of their futures. But war intervenes and their plans and dreams are all gone.
Cecelia loves Max but he is German and it seems an impossible romance with no future.
Jessie is an army nurse and ends up in Gallipoli. She meets a doctor but can they overcome prejudices on their road to happiness.
Etta elopes to Capri with Italian love, Carlo, but soon finds out he has lied to her and now there is a baby on the way but no wedding!
Their mother worries about them all but for different reasons and what will be their fates by the time war ends.
Looking forward to Book 2!!

"Love in a Time of War" is the second novel by Adrienne Chinn which I have read. This is an epic story set during WW1, with flashbacks to twenty years earlier. There are three sisters, Cecilia, Etta and Jessica, who all have very different personalities and follow different paths as the war comes to England. The book has an international feel as there is Italian blood in the family, and one of the girls has a German boyfriend. Some famous people get a mention, particularly in artistic Etta's storyline, including Virginia and Leonard Woolf, and Virginia's sister Vanessa Bell.

This is a really enjoyable book and apparently it is the first of a trilogy, so more to look forward to.

Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.

My expectations for this book were very high due to how much I loved the author's previous book, The English Wife. Love in a Time of War was a good read but did not live up to my hopes for it. The story jumped around between too many points of view, giving it a choppy feel. This was also a long book at almost 500 pages, so I was a bit shocked at the abrupt ending and the news that it wasn't a standalone novel. I did enjoy the time period and the characters and would recommend it to any WWI fiction lovers.

Thank you to NetGalley and One More Chapter for access to this arc.

It took a short while for me to get into this book but once I did I loved it. The story is set in WW1 and tells how three sisters and their parents cope with life during the war.
One sister is in love but her boyfriend is German and has to return to his country to fight.
One sister is a nurse and joins the army to see the world . And the other sister is in love with an Italian and follows him to Italy.
Each of these sisters have many obstacles to overcome before they can be happy. We hear about the war from the point of view of both German and Engish soldiers and also from an Italian soldier and how their side in the war kept changing, I found this really interesting and my heart went out to Cecelia wondering how she would cope if she married her German boyfriend.
I really enjoyed this book which is the first one I have read by this author. I am also delighted to hear it will be a trilogy and I can't wait for book two.

This was a fascinating story of one familiys' love life during the First World War.. Some delightful characters and a very immersive story line. The fact that the story is also set in various parts of the world increased its interest and enjoyability. Great read!

An engrossing family saga. Christina and her three daughters are quite different characters but are all strong women in their different ways. Their story takes you to many places, from Capri to Cairo, through love lost and found, an unplanned pregnancy and an inter-racial marriage unusual for the time. A real page-turner.

This was a beautifully written book about how the war affected the Fry sisters! The author did a great job bringing the characters to life for us! It does start out a little slow but most historical novels do! For me it was the characters that had me invested in this book! When you can feel what the characters are feeling it makes the book come alive for you! It was a engaging and beautiful story! Happy reading everyone!

This is a long saga of three British sisters set during WWI. Each sister is so different than the other, even the twins. The one similar thing that binds them together is their deep and undying love for the men in their lives. Intertwined is the story of their mother, the cool and co trolled woman that they know is nothing like the you g woman she once was.

A story of love found and love lost. Italy, Egypt and England play an important part in each of their lives as they grow into the women they are meant to be.

I found this book very slow in the beginning and I wasn’t completely happy with the ending but the book is enjoyable to read.

Thank you to Harper Collins and One More Chapter for the invitation to read this ebooks via NetGalley.

Enjoyable and somewhat epic story of 3 sisters during WW1, with flashbacks to the life of their mother 20 years earlier. Celie, Etta and Jessica all follow different paths during the war. Jessica works as a nurse seizing the chance to work abroad in both Gallipoli and Egypt. Celie falls in love with a German, Max-a man who is now her enemy! And Etta elopes to Italy, but under false pretences.
War brings great opportunities for women's freedom, as well as heartbreak and destruction. Will they all come through the war unscathed? This is a detailed story of one family during the first world war. An engaging story, leaving the reader a keen to find out what happens next. Will all be resolved, or will the three girls face despair?

Love in a Time of War harbors many family secrets. Set in England during World War I, we are introduced to the three Fry sisters just before Britain declares war on Germany. Cecelia, the oldest, was born on the island of Capri. Her younger twin sisters, Etta and Jessica were born in London. The differing circumstances of their births is one of the many secrets made only more complicated by the outbreak of war.

The girls’ mother, Christina, comes from an aristocratic Italian family and does not hide the feeling she thinks she has married beneath her. Gerald is a “lowly”—in her opinion—tradesman operating a photography studio. Christina’s goal in life is to see her that her daughters’ remain chaste before making good marriages. War, and the individual personalities of each daughter, interferes with this plan.

First in a series, I look forward to future reading about the Fry sisters. Thank you NetGalley for introducing me to this excellent author.

I'm so happy that this will be a series! I enjoyed these characters immensely and the ending went too fast for me. Looking forward to what happens in the next book.

My favorite part was how Jessie overcame her bias.

A really enjoyable read. It did take me a few chapters to become engaged with this book but then I couldn’t put it down.
A family saga that begins in 1891 In Capri, Italy with Christina and takes us on a journey through to the early 1900’s and WW1.
The Fry sisters Cecilia and twins Jessie and Etta are the daughters of Christina and Gerald Fry. The girls are as different from each other in looks and personality. Cecilia is in love with her German teacher Max but with the war looming can she really have a future with a German. Jessie is a nurse who is looking to escape London and see the world and the war allows that to happen as she is sent to Gallipoli and Egypt. Etta who is the budding artist falls in love with Carlo an Italian and elopes to Capri but with the war escalating has she made the right decision. The lives and the journey of the sisters is overshadowed by the concern and the family secret that their mother conceals.
Loved the alternate chapters that take us on the journey of all 4 women. Themes of women’s rights flow through the story which gives us the reader a perspective of the struggles women in the era endured.
A heartfelt story of of how the war changes lives as seen through the Fry girls.

This fabulous read introduces the Fry sisters Cecelia and twins Jessie and Etta and the very different paths they take following the outbreak of world war 1. Also incorporating the story of their mother Christina in an easy to follow dual timeline from 1891 on the beautiful island of Capri. Cecelia becomes a photographer and journalist writing of the dangerous work being done by women as the men were away fighting. She also attended and photographed womens rights marches in London. Jessie is the adventurous sister who longs to travel and explore the world. She trains as a nurse and enlists in the army and is sent to Egypt and Gallipoli to care for wounded soldiers. Etta is an artist but after meeting the love of her life Carlo in the course of her work she elopes with him to Capri hiding the truth behind her sudden departure. Mother Christina is also keeping secrets from her past from all of her family.
This is a beautifully written story with all the ingredients I enjoy. Secrets, mystery, romance, strong women and family saga. It is a slow starter while introducing characters but develops into an unputdownable book. This is the first of a series of 3 books and I’m eagerly awaiting the next two. I hadn’t read Adrienne Chinn before but I’m now reading The English wife.
My thanks to Emma of One More Chapter,HarperCollins and netgalley for the opportunity to read and review

In 1913, three sisters are coming of age on the precipice of WWI. Cecelia is in love with a solider Jessie is an army nurse sent to the front lines to help. Etta elopes with her Italian love. The novel goes back and forth between each sister's story, yet it's easy to follow and not confusing. Their mother Christina is also in the mix and you get insight into her stress and tribulations as she watches her daughters navigate a challenging world. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to friends looking for a great historical fiction piece.
