Love in a Time of War

I'm so happy that this will be a series! I enjoyed these characters immensely and the ending went too fast for me. Looking forward to what happens in the next book.

My favorite part was how Jessie overcame her bias.

This fabulous read introduces the Fry sisters Cecelia and twins Jessie and Etta and the very different paths they take following the outbreak of world war 1. Also incorporating the story of their mother Christina in an easy to follow dual timeline from 1891 on the beautiful island of Capri. Cecelia becomes a photographer and journalist writing of the dangerous work being done by women as the men were away fighting. She also attended and photographed womens rights marches in London. Jessie is the adventurous sister who longs to travel and explore the world. She trains as a nurse and enlists in the army and is sent to Egypt and Gallipoli to care for wounded soldiers. Etta is an artist but after meeting the love of her life Carlo in the course of her work she elopes with him to Capri hiding the truth behind her sudden departure. Mother Christina is also keeping secrets from her past from all of her family.
This is a beautifully written story with all the ingredients I enjoy. Secrets, mystery, romance, strong women and family saga. It is a slow starter while introducing characters but develops into an unputdownable book. This is the first of a series of 3 books and I’m eagerly awaiting the next two. I hadn’t read Adrienne Chinn before but I’m now reading The English wife.

An engaging historical novel that scans the glob beginning in the early 1900’s. The story is about family. The matriarch ‘s actions as a young woman infatuated by her first romance and the actions and reactions that result. Secrets, so many secretly! Three very different sisters navigate life and their individual passions; art, photography, journalism, and medicine. Through WWI, and the Spanish Flu, waiting for love to return or finding love in a foreign land. This novel has great heart. Like many families there are struggles that should tear them apart but their love for each other bids them together. ‘‘Tis is the first in a series in the life of the Fry sisters. I’d like to thank Net galley and Harper Collins Books for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Can’t wait for book #2.

“Love in a Time of War” by Adrienne Chinn, new author to this reader was a captivating and wonderful read. Having never read any of this author’s works before, I thought the story was well-written and a story that draws the reader into the lives of the Fry Sisters. The story starts off a bit slow in the beginning but with novels I’ve read related to war times that was understandable for me and did not deter me from continuing the read.

The scene is during war time 1913 over a span of approximately six years and is told through the perspective of the Fry Sisters, Cecelia, Jessie and Etta. I loved these characters because their personalities and view of their stories captures you and appears so realistic when they tell their stories of the emotions and feelings during that timeframe. This is where I think Chinn has done a remarkable job of bringing these characters to life on page to make the reader see them as more believable than fictional. Sub-characters, to include their mother was a welcome addition to the well-written plot.

I’ve come to love the One More Chapter series stories as they have been enlightening and worth the read. This was a heartfelt and warm story of family and how the war changed the lives of three sisters. Truly enjoyed this story. A highly recommended read.

A beautiful story with a strong and courageous heroine. I couldn't put this down! Beautiful writing kept me turning the pages!

A charming story of three sisters during WW1 and how their lives change, as the book finished on another storyline, I guess the author is planning another one or two books , it wouldn’t be my usual type of genre but there was something engaging about the book.

Love in a Time of War harbors many family secrets. Set in England during World War I, we are introduced to the three Fry sisters just before Britain declares war on Germany. Cecelia, the oldest, was born on the island of Capri. Her younger twin sisters, Etta and Jessica were born in London. The differing circumstances of their births is one of the many secrets made only more complicated by the outbreak of war.

The girls’ mother, Christina, comes from an aristocratic Italian family and does not hide the feeling she thinks she has married beneath her. Gerald is a “lowly”—in her opinion—tradesman operating a photography studio. Christina’s goal in life is to see her that her daughters’ remain chaste before making good marriages. War, and the individual personalities of each daughter, interferes with this plan.

First in a series, I look forward to future reading about the Fry sisters. Thank you NetGalley for introducing me to this excellent author.
