As soon as I finish posting this review, I’m rereading Maggie Moves On! I felt nervous starting this book. I have loved all of Lucy’s independently published books. I worriedly wondered if her voice would still sound the same with this one.
All that needless worrying…
I love the way Lucy loves her people. Both real and fictional. This is demonstrated by the little Easter eggs sprinkled throughout this book. Longtime readers will have fun discovering these hidden gems. And if this book is someone’s initial introduction to Lucy, it will surely be the one they come back to once they’ve gotten to know more about Lucy and her carefully crafted literary world.
One of Lucy’s superpowers is developing likable relatable perfectly imperfect characters. Everyone from Maggie and Silas, to Cody and Wallace, Dean, Dayana, even Kevin and his kittens are folks you’d want to spend time with and get to know better.
I will definitely be recommending and gifting this book when it is released. I understand this is a stand alone book. Lucy hit it out of the park once again with a tale that is sure to be well loved. I only wish this had been the first in a series because Kinship seems like it would be a cool place to revisit as each of the HEAs unfolds.
P.S. And I want to be Dean’s BFF so we can go find all the good gluten free eateries together!
I really enjoyed this story. Sexy Silas, or Sly Sy, falls immediately for youtube star house flipper, Maggie Nichols. He doesn’t care about her fame on the internet; in fact, he barely knows anything about social media. He just likes her take-charge attitude and the way she jumps right in to do the hard work to fix up the Victorian mansion she’s purchased in his small Idaho town. He’s a landscaper that she hires for her job. And it doesn’t hurt her youtube show to have a hot landscaper to highlight.
The book is rather long and basically every plot turn and bit of character development is hinted at earlier so there were no surprises. What makes this such an enjoyable read is that Silas is such a very nice guy and he is so deeply in love with Maggie, yet is willing to give her time and help her with her insecurities. He made the perfect book boyfriend.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
I am continuously amazed by Lucy Score! She manages to draw you into the story, I could not put this book down! I devoured this book in one sitting and I have no regrets! It was such an interesting story with the amazing characters that I wish were my real-life friends, the adorable town that I wished I lived in, and a crazy adventure that I wish I could go on! I loved the mystery that unraveled in this story, so unexpected!! As always, a five-star book from Lucy Score!!
Nobody does small town life better than Lucy Score. Kinship, Idaho is a charming town full of quirky characters where you feel like you belong. Maggie arrives with a connection to the town but no desire to stay. She is tough and independent and fiercely proud of not needing anyone but herself. Enter Silas and his endearingly mischievous sidekick Kevin. They show Maddie exactly what makes Kinship a town where she should plant roots. What sets a Lucy Score book apart is the flawless character development of not only the main characters but the supporting cast. She gently and lovingly tackles the biggest social issues we see every day without being preachy or suffocating. Rather, it's just the expectation that we do the hard things to show love and acceptance because that is simply what we as humans deserve and should show to each other. Blended families, LGBTQ relationships, estranged families, lonely old grumps who missed opportunities to fulfill their dreams, and most especially the animals who always show love when we need it most. Lucy is a pro at all of these characters without it feeling forced, and that truly is a beautiful thing. The romance is hot, the emotions are big, and your funny bone will be tickled. There is a fun little mystery thatkeeps you guessing until the end as well. Whether this is your first Lucy Score book or you've read them all, you will not be disappointed with Maggie Moves On.
I know I'm in the minority and it's physically paining me to give my first unhappy review for Lucy Score. I am a BRA. I am team Lucy all the way. She has my undying loyalty. But Maggie Moves On did not do it for me.
What I liked about the book:
1. Silas falls in love first. It's definitely nice to see the role reversed in a love story.
2. I love that Lucy always includes a loveable animal in most of her stories. Kevin is fantastic! Especially having picked his own name. One cool doggo.
3. I love Silas' family dynamics. They really show the most beautiful way a blended family can work so well together. And Michael is hilarious. This is honestly the best part of this book and is what kept me reading through to the end.
4. It's a Lucy Score book, so the steam was good.
5. I'M SORRY! Was that a Kait Nolan reference???? Is Kathryn Nolan, scooter daredevil at Wallace's senior home, based on Lucy's writing friend Kait Nolan???
What I didn't like about this book:
1. Something is missing. Lucy's books are usually long, but they never drag and they are always good and full of sparkly personality. I did not get any of that from this book. WTF happened? This is my least favorite Lucy Score title to date.
2. The only things I can connect with Maggie on: I too have a thing for fry sauce and men who can rock backwards ball caps. Otherwise, she bugs me.
Silas also bugs me. I'm never one to turn down an alpha, and I love the idea of being tossed over a guys shoulder and told to sit my ass down and listen (despite my raging feminist viewpoint), HOWEVER, something did not click here. He just came across as an ass that I definitely would have humped and dumped.
3. Instead of an epilogue to show where people were later, it was all forced into a couple of non-cohesive paragraphs. It was a super letdown even though it was tied up in a nice bow.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for free. The review above is reflective of my honest opinions.
3 lets-move-on stars.
Love & adventure in a western town - perfect!
Lucy does it again with this charming yet spicy story that has the perfect blend of romance, family, and adventure in a western town you'd love to visit! A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Maggie Moves On was such a fun and enjoyable read!! Silas was awesome - it was such a nice departure to read about a happy, love-loving, sunshine hero. I also loved getting to actually see Maggie and Silas in a relationship - it was really a breath of fresh air. I really appreciated that it was low-angst but still interesting and very romantic. The final sign at the end of the book...chills :)
The side characters were many and wonderful - I couldn't help but get invested in all of their lives and wish to be a part of such a wonderful community. I found the backstory of the Old Campbell Place interesting and a nice, easy mystery (sort-of) on the side.
This book was a super cute read with some twists thrown in, a little bit of heat between the 2 main characters, and multiple funny moments of Kevin. I actually found myself laughing out loud at different times throughout the story. Lucy Score is the absolute queen of small town romcoms and this book is a perfect example of the magic she can create. If you’re looking for a light read with good character development and many funny moments this is the book for you!
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the arc provided via NetGalley and to Lucy Score!
I enjoy all of Lucy Score’s books but I honestly think this one is my all-time favorite. Great characters and storyline. Some good laughs and enough heat. Appreciate getting to read it early.
Get ready to read Her latest masterpiece, because Lucy Score did it again! Set in Kinship, Idaho, Maggie rehabs the Old Campbell place, and finds more than just another grand project, but her coming home. There’s a lawn guy, a dog, more than a few mended fences and a lot of overdue honesty between family, and finding out what family really is. I laughed and cried and giggled like a 5th grader. I can’t wait to re-read this story. I hope this won’t be the only time we visit Kinship.
One of the best books I have ever read. Great character development. I loved how all the intimate scenes were written. Some hot stuff going on. And a wonderful HEA!
If you're a fan of romantic comedy books, Maggie Moves On is like indulging in a warm fudge brownie in front of a crackling fireplace, while wearing the softest leggings. Pure comfort. Ms. Score writes well-developed characters, snappy, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and interesting secondary characters. Her descriptions of small-town life are hilarious without dipping into condescension. Maggie Moves On will have you rooting for Maggie, Silas, Kinship, Idaho, and even Kevin the dog.
I so enjoyed Maggie Moves On! I laughed out loud and did not want the book to end. With work and life I thought I would read this book over the next week. Instead I binged it yesterday! I laughed, I liked the mini mystery-would have liked that developed a little more. I am glad that there was an epilogue telling us about everyone, though I am wondering how Kayla and Elton got together. Now since is Lucy, I am hoping she may revisit kinship again!
Another winner from Lucy Score. Relatable characters, cute antics, HEA. The best compliment, we want to continue to follow these characters and theor families on to the next story.
I've been a big fan of Lucy Score for several years now and always grab her books when they come out. I tend to buy the physical copies of the ones I enjoyed the most and have 11 so far. This book will definitely be #12 when it publishes.
Lucy has a way of creating the most likable/lovable characters, even the grumpy ones make you chuckle. My husband says he can always tell when I'm reading a Lucy book because I'm almost always smiling. Makes it hard to sneak in any reading at work.
Without giving away any of the plot, let's just say that this book is about creating a wonderful family without even knowing you really needed or wanted one. The people that you surround yourself with in your daily life are your family.
I loved this book. The character development for Maggie was excellent and you really get to see her grow and learn to trust. You know she is strong, but her strength truly shows in taking the chance to let people into her life despite her past. Silas was great in his unwavering belief that Maggie was the one for him and his insistence that he take care of her. It could have gotten creepy if written incorrectly, but his family's input helped Silas understand Maggie's needs, and also helped to keep his own expectations reasonable. The parts where Maggie was talking about her past with her father made me cry, which I DID NOT APPRECIATE because it made me feel things, you monster.
I still give this book 5 stars (despite the crying) because it was beautiful and a little messy, which all great relationships are.
I thought this was quite charming. I found some of this book difficult to slog through at times, but overall I have no complaints. Maggie is incredibly compelling as a protagonist, and it's hard as a reader to NOT want her to experience good things. Silas is also suuuuuper charming and engaging - the dynamic between him and Maggie is genuinely so good.
Lucy Score does it again with another amazing book! Maggie Moves On pulled me in from the beginning and made me not want to put it down. Lucy has a way with the details and throwing little nuggets in her books that make them so fun to read!
I absolutely loved this read! From having a strong female character to a hot landscaping dreamboat, this book had it all. I loved the realness of the characters and the house renovation aspect as someone who loves working on my own home. I could relate a lot to Maggie in that aspect which made her feel like a friend. I have not read a Lucy Score book before this but I will definitely pick them up in the future.
Lucy Scores again! I love this book. It delivers so many laughs and good feelings in addition to being a great romance. Lucy always delivers.
It is refreshing to have a male lead that is positive. Yes, sometimes I love a grumpy hero, but that gets old when every male lead is negative and grumpy. This is a breath of fresh air. The Hot Landscape Guy is strong and caring. That makes him even more attractive!
Thank you Lucy!!!
