This was a fun book full of recipes that would be easy to recreate on a camping trip .The recipes are divided into sections depending on what you might want and it also contains tips, warnings, and a bunch of great photos. We don't currently have a camper but we talk about getting one in the future and I can see this book sitting on a shelf somewhere inside it. :)
I love camping and loved this book so much that I bought one for myself! Full of pictures and recipes that you'll use at camp and at home too! A must-have book to pack with your camping gear!
Love camping and cooking outdoors? Want to learn some new techniques and organization hints? You’ll want to pick up The Family Camp Cookbook: Easy, Fun, and Delicious Meals to Enjoy Outdoors . This excellent cookbook has sections on organizing, planning a good camp kitchen, helpful equipment, and making the most of your camping experience. Of course, the recipes are what stand out, but the information in the early sections will make it easier to prepare these recipes successfully.
The recipes are written in the traditional form and are easy to follow. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that are readily available in mainstream grocery stores.
The thing that stands out is that the recipes are for dishes that almost everyone will actually want to eat. That includes both adults and children. Vikre has done an excellent job of choosing a wide array of recipes that will appeal to almost everyone.
There are also beautiful photographs – unfortunately, not of every dish, but at least some. It would be better if there were more, but that won’t make this a no-go. It is still an excellent cookbook, and campers as well as those who like to cook outdoors will benefit from having this on their bookshelf.
All told, this is a cookbook that will be enjoyed and will be used often by everyone who enjoys cooking while camping.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Perfect for those who love camping and want to upgrade their food game.
A really great camping cookbook. My family goes camping for two reasons: to get away from the world, and to eat good food! So this was a great fit for us. Lots of really creative ideas, and nothing too hard or complex!
As an occasional camper who wishes I could camp more often with my 9 year old son, I really enjoyed this beautiful and well photographed camp cookbook! Though some of the recipes would never fly with my picky eater, many of them looked approachable and delicious. I especially liked the simple layout of the recipes and that many were uncomplicated- camping cuisine is best when it's pared down to basics and just plain delicious. I especially liked the inclusion of vegan recipes since so often camping cooking boils down to meat on a stick or in a packet- even when I'm not camping with my vegetarian and vegan buddies, I like to mix it up with some meatless meals. There is some repetition in the book of very similar ideas, but I liked the three day menu very much, and would definitely give more of the recipes a try on my next tent camping trip this fall!
Fun cookbook for camping, Lots of recipes to try. We camp a lot in the spring, summer and fall. This is a cookbook that would make a great gift for people that enjoy the outdoor and camping.
Fun and do-able camping cookbook - a must for lovers of the great outdoors!
It's a really good collection of friendly and fun recipes for the outdoors equipped with some good tips and advice to boot!
The importance of getting into the great outdoors is certainly a message to spread and this book to does the trick, not just recipes and chunks of advice about camping, this book also highlights the importance of prep, definitely important especially in the wild out doors but also great if you used this book at home, as the recipes are straightforward and easy for any cook whatever level to understand!
I really liked the "on the go" sections because I struggle to be regimented in my eating and so picking up light or nomming on the go meals is a must for me. The photo's are brilliant and I enjoyed the layout!
With thanks to netgalley for the free arc in return for my review, very good!
I love a good cookbook, and as I'm currently working on a campsite I've recently tried a few of the recipes and really enjoyed them! The recipes are easy and fun to make, the photos that have been added are beautiful and it's a very well-rounded cookbook. Definitely recommend it! 4/5 stars for me.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the author for gifting me an eARC, in return for an honest review.
This is a great book with guidelines about cooking while camping and what to bring with the limited amount of storage you have. There are some really great recipes in here that I will be using in the future.
The Family Camp Cookbook has an interesting variety of camping recipes that are a diversion from the usual hot dogs and other grilled meat camping standards. Many of the recipes are derivative of the author's Norwegian heritage. Useful information on food storage, equipment, cocktails, and preparation tips are included. This is a great reference item for new campers as well as the seasoned set looking for new and different recipes.
This is a must have for anyone going out on their first camping trip. A great tool for boy scouts, girl scouts, and campers. This book doesn't just give you recipes to cook it also tells you how to best set up a campfire for cooking. A great read!

I was pleased for the opportunity to review [[The Family Camp Cookbook]] by Emily Vikre. I am a big fan of outdoor cooking and looking forward to taking out my tent this summer. The Family Camp Cookbook promises advice and recipes for cooking outdoors to help you learn to plan, prep and cook as a family. The book is broken down into five sections: The Camping Kitchen, Breakfast, Lunches and Foods on the Go, Dinner, and finally, Treats and Drinks.
From the beginning, the author makes it clear that the book is for car camping. She assumes that you have plenty of space and that weight is not an issue. As I am a hiker, I was a little bit disappointed by the sheer amount of goods that the author presumes you will be carrying with you. She recommends that you take one cooler for food storage and a second for drinks, along with a camp stove, two skillets, two pots, a camping dutch oven, camping knives, a cutting board and "utensils galore". The advice for starting a fire tells you to bring a "powerful fire starting back up", such as a blow torch. That said, the first chapter is full of good advice for choosing and maintaining your camp kitchen, which can be very useful even if you aren't planning on setting up camp directly next to your car.
The rest of the book offers a variety of tastes based on the author's experience with her husband and children. Sometimes I found it difficult, as a solo camper, to feel included in the warmth and affection that the author offers families who are braving the wilderness with young children. On the other hand, I did enjoy the repeated references to making easy cocktails for adults to be sipped while sitting around the fire.
The dishes are marked with a recommended cooking method: camp fire, cook stove, dutch oven and make ahead, which don't require cooking at the campsite. This breakdown makes it very easy to scan through the recipes to find the ones that suit your camping model. The recipes list their ingredients in both imperial volume measures and metric grams and litres, winning my heart forever. The text also makes it very clear that the recipes are not meant as diktaks but instead should be inspirational, open to changes and modifications to meet every family's needs.
The attention to detail is variable, however. Considering the author's childhood summers spent in Norway, the book is often oddly American, naming ingredients such as cheesy goldfish, frozen hashbrowns or summer sausage that are not easily found outside of the US. At the same time, the author is meticulous about offering gluten-free options and noting "if you are allowed nuts" every time she includes a recipe that requires nuts.
Although the weather is not suitable for outdoor cooking just yet, the recipes are all very tempting, with a wide range of types of food from sandwiches to pasta to meat and cheese boards to hearty rice dishes. I followed two recipes from the book for an overnight trip to a BnB: the cherry and pecan granola and the dried wild mushroom risotto (I used orzo, as "store-bought quick risotto mix" isn't something that my Nordic grocery store carries). Both dishes lightweight to carry, easy to follow and very flavourful.
If you are looking for tips as to how to reduce your packing and have a decent meal out in the middle of nowhere with only the food you carried on your back, then this is not the book for you. But if you are planning to fill up the back of the car and your emphasis is more on fun food for the kids than wilderness training, then The Family Camp Cookbook will encourage you to plan an excellent cooking experience. And if you are somewhere in the middle, there are plenty of tips and tasty ideas to motivate you to expand your repertoire.
I have to confess, I'm not a camper. I prefer to prepare and eat my meals indoors. But the beautiful photography and delicious-looking recipes here make me want to set out into the wilderness. Whether it's a gooey chocolate Dutch oven cake; or orzo with tomato and feta; or homemade granola bars; there's something for every appetite and family group. Includes helpful tips and advice (such as bringing some food that doesn't require cooking, in case you can't light a fire), suggested equipment, and more.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* 3.5, i would buy this as an ebook but likely not a hard copy, its not a bad cookbook but unsure how many recipes i'd really use

The Family Camp Cookbook is full of fun, do-able camping recipes. The book's recipes are divided nicely (Breakfast, Lunch/Snacks, Dinner, and Dessert/Drinks.) It also contains tips, warnings, and is full of great photos.
My family has a small camper and my son is a Boy Scout- so we do quite a bit of camping- and we love it! We always cook when camping, and it's fun to try new recipes. I found several recipes in this book that I'd like to try- especially the dutch oven ones, as my son and the scouts use them often.
This would be nice to have to keep in our camper for future reference.
I loved this cookbook! The Family Camp Cookbook features lots of yummy and easy recipes for cooking while camping. I like that it also included helpful tips and tricks. I can't wait to purchase my own copy to have while camping and also a copy for our library.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this ARC!
This cookbook is beautiful! I loved looking through the different recipes and everything looked so good! I go camping a lot and I do think some of these recipes would be a little hard to pull off while camping. This would depend on the type of camping you do, but for me, I prefer to rough it a little more than these recipes would allow. That being said, I could totally see this being used as a cookbook at home. I made the one-pan picadillo. It was good and was easy to prepare at home. I think it would be difficult to prepare while camping because of all the different ingredients and the cooking time though. I would like to see prep time and total cooking time included in the recipes.
There are also alcoholic drinks in the book and some of them looked really pretty and easy to put together. I loved the author’s suggestion to use a Nalgene bottle to mix up the drink. It was a fun addition to the recipe.
I'll be honest, I am a very reluctant camper. You might say my idea of camping is a hotel without wifi...BUT the rest of my family love it. When the chance to camp with my best friend and their family came up, I signed up for two nights in a tent for the greater good - to make my family happy and spend time with one of my favourite women in the world. So when I saw The Family Camp Book come up on Netgalley, it seemed not only topical but a good idea to plan something delicious to have when we're camping.
The Family Camp Cookbook delivered what I wanted and more. I knew I was on to a winner with the hilarious camping fails I read about in the introduction,. What followed on from there was a range of interesting recipes accompanied by mouth watering pictures. I loved the versatility of the ways you can cook the recipes too - over the camp fire, a stove, a dutch oven or to take with you before you go. Thankfully, if you are a complete camping dunce like me, there's a handy list of equipment you need to bring. There's also helpful information on how to navigate your kids and the campfire as well as sample menus. The book is set out by the type of meal and breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners are all covered. Some recipes are certainly adventurous, others are fun and bound to please the kids and adults alike. When you have tucked the kids in for the night, there's a list of camping cocktails that you can guarantee I will be working my way through in preperation for sleeping in a tent! I got exactly what I needed, recipes that have me excited for our upcoming trip amd sure to generate delicious food orientated memories of our time away.
Thank you to Emily Vikre, Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful family camping cookbook, probably the best one I've seen. The recipes are rooted in reality. You're car camping, you want to cook a fresh meal, you don't want to spend your afternoon prepping, or eat in the dark, or wash a lot of camp dishes. Everything also looks delicious, and is relatively healthy, and definitely nourishing. Food to fuel some good adventures, for sure. My favorite aspect of this cookbook, was the surprising presence of Scandinavian camping/hiking classic recipes. They're all very smart, very healthy and easy, and just something different. Great book!
