Description
The Family Camp Cookbook is a book for everyone who enjoys cooking and eating outdoors. Whether you need to learn how to pack your first cooler or you’re looking for kid-friendly recipes to enjoy after a day spent outdoors, you’ll learn how to plan, prep, and cook as a family when you don’t have the comforts of a full kitchen.
Start out by learning how to build a fire easily at your campsite, or use the “sure-fire” guides for mastering any grill. With planning lists and prep steps for the recipes, you’ll quickly go from unpacking to firing up your first meal. The recipes inside include a wide variety of updated camp classics and dishes you’d never have thought to cook at camp. Cooking techniques range from live-fire roasting and foil-pack cooking to family-style dinners in the Dutch oven. (Yes, you can almost “set it and forget it” like a slow cooker if you know what you’re doing!) Chapters and recipes include:
- Breakfasts cover a whole range of options to start the day right, like Make-Ahead Granola, The Best Fluffy Pancakes (with topping bar!), Dutch Oven Coffee Cake, Skillet Biscuits, kid-friendly Frittata, Chilaquiles, and a Hash Brown Breakfast Burrito.
- Lunches and packables: If you’re camping, chances are the mid-day meal is fuel away from the campsite. (These ideas are also great for day trips and picnics!). Recipes feature a variety of handhelds such as Farmer’s Lunch Sandwiches and Chickpea Salad with Pitas as well as easy-to-eat salads and soups and a few trail mixes and snacks to eat by the handful.
- Dinners: Ah, the main event after a hard day of hiking, paddling, or whatever else floats your boat (or inner tube). Settle in with DIY Ramen Bowls, One-Pan Picadillo, Naan Pizzas, Italian Sausage Burgers, loaded Foil-Baked Sweet Potatoes, or a Skillet "Lasagna," among other options.
- Treats: Break out the S'mores Galores, but don’t stop there! Build a Banana Boat, fire up a Dutch Oven Strawberry Cake, or treat everyone to a Campfire Cobbler or Cracker Crust Pudding Pie.
Of course, there’s nothing quite like waking up in the woods…unless you don’t know how to make camp coffee. Not to worry: tasty (and essential) beverages are included as well, from that rustic cowboy cup of caffeine to restorative fruit punches. There are even a few cocktails for the adults to enjoy by the fire a little later in the evening. No matter the size of your group or the time you have to spare, make your next adventure a delicious one!

The Family Camp Cookbook is such a friendly and fun collection of tips and recipes for outdoor dining by Dr. Emily Vikre. Due out 29th March 2022 from Quarto on their Harvard Common Press imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
Wow, this was a really fun book. I grew up in a family who loved camping and RV'ing and some of my fondest memories of growing up were related to food and family. This book is full of funny (and some cautionary) bits of advice about camping and food, preparation and selection of tools and supplies, and getting the most out of enjoying the great outdoors.
I liked the accessible and logical layout. The introduction has some good tips for equipment and tools recommendations (the author doesn't mention brands, but does a good job of giving a balanced overview). The following chapters contain the recipes arranged thematically: breakfast, lunches (includes trail food on the go and dishes to prepare and eat in-camp), dinners, and treats & drinks. The author has included a LOT of recipes.. there are more than 75 at a rough count).
Recipes contain a description and background introduction, ingredients in a bullet list, and step-by-step cooking instructions. Ingredient measurements are supplied in American standard measurements with metric measurements in parentheses (yay!). The nutritional information is not included. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in text boxes in the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made for the most part with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex. Recipes with pre-preparation to do at home are listed in a sidebar.
The photography is well done and abundant; most of the recipes are illustrated with photographs which are clear and well done.Vegetarian recipes are not marked as such. Many of the recipes which aren't vegan-friendly could be made plant based with a little experimentation. (Almost all of the recipes are streamlined and don't contain many ingredients).
This is a nice collection of recipes and even allowing for the fact that some of them are very similar to others in the same category, this will keep camping/outdoors fans going for ages. These are simple "everyday" recipes which are anything but boring. We tried several dishes and all of them were tasty and well written.
We're definitely going to try more of these recipes. Well written book, tasty recipes.
Four and a half stars. This is a solid recipe book which will be used. It would make a superlative housewarming gift to a friend or family member who enjoys camping as a hobby.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Pros: Where I live in Louisiana, a family's "camp" is their lake house or country home . . . people register for specific camp house china when they get married. That being said, I had a different idea of what was meant by a camp cookbook--I was assuming a full kitchen rather than a campfire. Once I straightened out that confusion, I had a lot of fun reading this book about recipes for campouts. I loved the photos in this book and was surprised at how delicious the food looked--I've never done this kind of camping! This book is practical for the time we are living in as we are still gathering outdoors for meals. I found the first chapter to be extremely practical with information about what to pack, how to set up a stove, and what utensils to bring. I think this book would be a great gift for friends and family who love to camp or for kids who are in scouting.
Cons: None that I can think of.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, Harvard Common Press for the opportunity to read this book!
If you like camping or just using your backyard cookery, you will love this book! This book has everything you need to know from stocking up your backyard kitchen to recipes. I am so excited to try these out! But one caution, these are not the healthiest recipes.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was around 3.5 stars for me.
There's a lot of information packed into this book! There's a lot of recipes and information about how to prepare for camping cooking. The recipes are "family" oriented in that they're largely recipes that kids will enjoy - pancakes, mac & cheese, etc. The recipes focus on having minimal ingredients and lists what prep to do in advance. But still some of the recipes seem complicated for newer cooks, especially those new to cooking over coals. The recipes are listed in both grams and cups, but some have instructions to cook until ready or similar, which isn't super helpful if you're new to cooking with fire.
There are some interesting recipes to try.
This book is laid out really nicely and has lots of great tips with lists of cooking tools needed to make these recipes camping. You would need to plan what recipes before hand but the book gives you a sample menu for 3 days as well. Most of the meals are skillet or foil packs which makes it easy. A lot of ingredients I wouldn't normally bring camping though but most are easy to come by. I do wish I had a physical copy of the book to see what the size is like as that would factor into whether I would actually bring it camping with me. The idea is really nice though and there are some great recipes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for allowing me to read and ARC copy and review The Family Camp Cookbook. My thoughts are my own.
I have always camped. I grew up in a family who loved the great outdoors. We travelled extensively between California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Colorado to camp. Camping is an amazing adventure that requires a great deal of planning and intentionality. I remember watching my mom take weeks at a time to prepare for our next trip. I loved how she organized everything for our tent trailer and planned out the meals. Back in the 80s and 90s, meals were pretty simple with your standard egg/bacon or pancake breakfasts; sandwiches for lunch; and chili, soup or spaghetti for dinner.
My husband's family likewise spent a great deal of time camping. They travelled to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yellowstone, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and more. With five kids in tow, they had some pretty incredible family adventures, like the time my mother-in-law braved Million Dollar Highway in Western Colorado in a full-size van and with trailer in tow.
Fast forward to today: we have camped with my husband's family multiple times. In the past three or four years, we have all gathered together near Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevadas. We implemented a rule that each family (there's five total who attend) take one nightly meal. Let me tell you, we have some creative chefs. We've enjoyed carbonara pasta, a shrimp boil, Mexican chicken, chili, bean soup and more. These are the traditions that create lasting memories.
I am a foodie, and my husband has worked in food and beverage for fourteen years. He also has his ciserone and sommelier certifications. We love food, and we love to cook. We also enjoy creating memories with the food we make.
I loved reading The Family Camp Cookbook. It reminded me of all the reasons why camping is so much fun. So much of these vacations/family trips are based around the table; food plays an important role of creating the camping culture.
Emily Vikre has produced a timeless cookbook with The Family Camp Cookbook. Part memento, part training guide, part recipe builder, The Family Camp Cookbook should be on any camper's reading list.
I particularly think this would be a great library addition for someone just getting into camping, a wedding gift or the camping family who is looking to expand their recipe repertoire. After all, it is easy to keep creating the same meals over and over and over again out of necessity and ease.
Vikre provides a wide range of recipes, some a little more adventurous than I like, but many that I look forward to trying. In addition, Vikre does a fantastic job at speaking to the cooking tools required for successful camping, whether it be roughing it or more glamping it.
Be on the lookout for this wonderful cookbook, releasing March 29, 2022 wherever books are sold.
I'll be honest, I am a very reluctant camper. You might say my idea of camping is a hotel without wifi...BUT the rest of my family love it. When the chance to camp with my best friend and their family came up, I signed up for two nights in a tent for the greater good - to make my family happy and spend time with one of my favourite women in the world. So when I saw The Family Camp Book come up on Netgalley, it seemed not only topical but a good idea to plan something delicious to have when we're camping.
The Family Camp Cookbook delivered what I wanted and more. I knew I was on to a winner with the hilarious camping fails I read about in the introduction,. What followed on from there was a range of interesting recipes accompanied by mouth watering pictures. I loved the versatility of the ways you can cook the recipes too - over the camp fire, a stove, a dutch oven or to take with you before you go. Thankfully, if you are a complete camping dunce like me, there's a handy list of equipment you need to bring. There's also helpful information on how to navigate your kids and the campfire as well as sample menus. The book is set out by the type of meal and breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners are all covered. Some recipes are certainly adventurous, others are fun and bound to please the kids and adults alike. When you have tucked the kids in for the night, there's a list of camping cocktails that you can guarantee I will be working my way through in preperation for sleeping in a tent! I got exactly what I needed, recipes that have me excited for our upcoming trip amd sure to generate delicious food orientated memories of our time away.
Thank you to Emily Vikre, Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful family camping cookbook, probably the best one I've seen. The recipes are rooted in reality. You're car camping, you want to cook a fresh meal, you don't want to spend your afternoon prepping, or eat in the dark, or wash a lot of camp dishes. Everything also looks delicious, and is relatively healthy, and definitely nourishing. Food to fuel some good adventures, for sure. My favorite aspect of this cookbook, was the surprising presence of Scandinavian camping/hiking classic recipes. They're all very smart, very healthy and easy, and just something different. Great book!
What an amazing thoughtful and informative cook book!
This gives you everything you need for a successful camping trip, even down to what equipment you need to what you need from the supermarket
This is an essential manual for anyone thinking of going on a camping holiday.
Honestly I’m not what one would call outdoorsy. Unfortunately for me, my son is obsessed with the idea of camping. Enter this cookbook.
There are recipes for every meal, including desserts and drinks. The author gives amazing tips on how to start some prep at home and then finish it at camp. The recipes are easy to follow and not just what one would call typical camp food.
Now I’ll never be as proficient as the author but I feel more prepared for the day we go camping.
Other great things about the book:
1- the pictures are wonderful.
2- there’s tons of helpful tips.
3- the author is hilarious. I could see camping adjacent to her in my hotel. I mean my son can’t expect me to sleep outside too right?
4- literally everything.
I really enjoyed this book it had many of the normal camping fair but also stretches your imagination and might I say removed some of the stress out of complicated cooking techniques with easier ways to achieve the same results. Great addition to any camping regimen.
Great book, provides tips, tricks, sample menus and best of all new recipes to try on the road or at home. The book is a comprehensive grouping that will make camping a breeze in planning and execution. The book includes recipes from breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages, desserts and best of all snacks! Easy simple steps with great photos of the products. This should make camping a win for the cook and family!!
Thanks to netgalley, publisher and author for the opportunity to review this upcoming cookbook.
Published April 12, 2002 just in time for the camping season!
My family and I just started camping last summer. I’ll definitely be picking this one up for our trips we have planned over the summer! I loved how quick and low maintenance the recipes are!
Loved this one! Got a lot of inspiration for future camping trips. Loved the organization of this and the photos!!
Everyone who knows me, knows that I am Indoorsy. So why would I grab an advance copy of a camping cookbook. Well, I love cookbooks and this one peaked my interest with the cover and description. The recipes are excellent and the tips on how to pack and prepare your food are priceless. There are many great tips on meal prep for the recipes and how to pack some of the ingredients to not take up space. A practical break down of the different types of camping and the stoves you can use was explained in a way even I could understand it.
The recipes and photography are amazing. I am planning on making some of these at home, like skillet biscuits, beef stroganoff, eggs in purgatory, banana boats and so much more. Kids will love helping to make and prep these meals. It is a great starting point for family cooking. Highly recommend.
