Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Jane Corry and can safely say it won't be the last. I was hooked in the first couple of pages. Great build up of mystery at a good pace with a little trickle of clues along the way.
Definitely worth 5 stars
When Emily returns to her elderly father’s house, after hearing there will be an inquiry into her work as a midwife, she is surprised to find he has a glamorous carer, Francoise, and he is like a new man. With neither woman taking to the other one, and all three hiding secrets, the past gradually becomes unravelled.
I enjoyed this book. I changed sides with each chapter from a new viewpoint and came to the conclusion that nothing is ever as simple as it might seem. A recommended and enjoyable read.
I have read and really enjoyed many of Jane Corry’s previous novels – they always provide some tension, mystery and intriguing characters.
We All Have Our Secrets offers this too, but something about the story or perhaps the characters just felt a bit flat for me.
We follow Emily, a midwife who is suspended from work after she makes a mistake with a delivery. She heads out of London to the countryside where her father lives, but is surprised to find a young French woman living there… she says she’s been employed by Emily’s father to look after him, and he backs her up, but is that really all there is to it…?
The first half of We All Have Our Secrets really drew me in. I was interested in finding out whether Francoise was quite who she said she was, and if midwife Emily was right to be SO suspicious of her. Things certainly don’t se to add up. I have to admit that, although I did like Emily and could see where she was coming from, I found her quite rude and abrasive at times.
The story felt fairly slow at times but there was enough mystery and glimpses of the characters’ history to keep me intrigued. We flick between chapters told from the perspectives of Emily and Francoise and we go back to 1945 for short chapters from Emily’s father.
I felt like the plot cooled off a bit in the second half – it felt less tight and it seemed to lose its urgency. Although this book isn’t necessarily a fast paced novel anyway, the character studies kept me interested in the first half but I felt this tailed off a bit as the novel continued.
Overall I did enjoy this novel but it didn’t live up to the gripping nature of her other novels. It’s OK, but not amazing…
This story had some really relatable characters and a good plot to go with it, there were lots of sub plots in the background aswell which I enjoyed. The story follows 2 female characters and is told through their narrative.
Read about forgiveness and empathy in this beautiful and gripping book
Really loved this book , it had a lot of twists and turns and lots of suspense that you didn’t want to leave it down, the story unfolded in a brilliantly well written book. Loved all the characters that came to life through this amazing story. Would really recommend this book to everyone who loves a brilliant good book with lots of mystery and intrigue.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book; lots of characters thrown together with interesting back stories, maybe touches of my cousin Rachel and hints of dark secrets. Then, for me, it lost its way a bit in the middle and was more muddled and the French nuances of some of the dialogue and thoughts were a bit grating at times. However, it pulled itself back with happy endings and repaired relationships for most.
Thank you to netgalley and Penguin Books for an advance copy of this book

We All Have Our Secrets is a story of lies and secrets.Told in two timelines going back to WW2 and the present day it explains how Harold Gentle became the man he is today .All the main characters Harold ,Emily and Franscoise are complex characters and not always very nice and seemingly are living with guilt from the past .Set in Cornwall I enjoyed this Family Drama very much and was glad there was a satisfactory ending .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .

⏩for synopsis
Right so with Jane Corry books I find them very hit and miss, sometimes they are amazing, other times well they’re not. This one is a little in the middle for me but definitely more positive than negative.
It’s a very drawn out story but I must say I didn’t feel bored. I enjoyed the plot flipping between the backstory set in WW2 and present day. I found the author did a great job of casting suspicion on everyone, constantly changing your thoughts on who had ‘done it’ and overall weaving a tangled web. I liked the characterisation used and the cast of characters…
(I know you can feel a but coming here!)
I don’t know how to explain it but I didn’t get the story I wanted here. I feel like it was very long and drawn out for very little pay off. Things were built up in a certain way (no spoilers) but it didn’t go down that way. Perhaps that was the authors intention but I think I just needed a bit of a bang or big reveal at the end to have made the journey feel more worth while.
Don’t get me wrong, I would still recommend this read as overall I enjoyed reading it, it just lacked a little something for me.
With thanks to @netgalley and @penguinukbooks for allowing us to read this one early!

I really, really enjoyed this book. Emily is running away after disaster strikes at work, desperately seeking her 93 year old fathers advise. What she finds when she arrives though is 24 year old Francoise who is apparently her fathers carer. She has no idea where she has come from or why she is there, but one thing Emily is sure of and that is the fact that Francoise is hiding something and she is going to find out what.
This is not what I expected, as in place of the thriller I was expecting, was a heartfelt novel filled with the very human reactions to grief and jealousy. Told from both Emily and Francoise's perspective, it provides an incredibly full narrative of events from both sides of the story which really draws the reader in.
Overall I loved it, and would definitely recommend for a great summer read.
This is a fairly light mystery, set in a gorgeous place and is a light read. The constant switches of POV are quite hard to navigate for some reason but it’s a nice novel
I love, love, love Jane Corry novels and this is no exception. Highly recommended and definitely worthy of more than 5 stars!!
Emily is a midwife who ends up being suspended from her job due to a mistake she made whilst in the delivery suite, a hearing ensues. She decides its time to go and visit her 93 year old dad and look after him. However when she gets back to her childhood home in Cornwall, she is faced with Francoise who apparently her dad hired as a carer to help look after him! It's clear from the outset that Emily and Francoise don't get on but what secrets are they both hiding? And why is Francoise being so friendly to Harold (Emily's dad) is she after money? That's what the villagers think! But Harold has secrets of his own! will he tell Emily or will she have to find out for herself? I
Many thanks to the publishers for letting me read a copy of this novel. Please Jane keep them coming!!!! Can't wait for your next one.
What us readers really crave is a story populated with 'real' people and a cracking good plot. Jane Cory delivers on both points
Emily, a midwife has her mind on her date, and her elderly father, when disaster strikes. While in shock she retreats to her childhood home only to find an interloper. Her father has engaged a French carer who seems to be ruling the roost.
This story has many sub-plots, all fascinating and engaging and peopled by a wide-range of intriguing characters.
This was a book that I couldn't wait to return to,.
I was totally hooked on this story right from the start! I really enjoyed it, full of intrigue and mystery, you never really know who to believe. I thought the story flowed well and I was interested in the characters. It’s written from the point of view of three of the characters, although one of them is set in the past. I recommend this book, thank you #netgalley
This book was a fantastic read, not that I expected anything less from Jane Corry.
The book begins with the author introducing us to Emily, a midwife, who appears to have a “disaster” at work, for which she must face a disciplinary hearing.
Whilst on a break from work, she returns home to her 93 year old father, but she is also greeted by his new French carer, Francoise.
From the moment they meet, there is clear tension and a real atmosphere, but at the beginning it is unclear why!
The book is split into five parts, each one being told from a different perspective
Both of these have something to hide, but which one will get found out first?
The book was a very strong read, with the author dropping clues in the book as to who was hiding what
I really enjoyed the way the book came together at the end.
This was not my favourite of the author, Blood Sisters is still the top contender, but I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down
Thank you to the publisher for a gifted copy

This book follows Emily as her life completely changes when she is suddenly suspended from her job as a midwife, due to a mistake she may have made in the delivery suite.
Whilst she is on her suspension, she is desperate to get away, so she returns to her hometown to see her dad and help look after him.
When she arrives, she is shocked to find he already has employed a carer named Francois. Emily starts to have suspicions about why Francois is staying around.
When she meets up with an ex-boyfriend she wonders if there is still anything between them, but then she has her doubts on whether she can trust him.
What secrets will Emily uncover? Will Francois also uncover secrets about Emily?
This book is split into several parts and is told by the points of view of Emily and Francois. This helps get the background of both the characters, but also adds to the confusion about who is actually telling the truth.
I did find myself wondering where everything was leading which kept me reading and interested.
I liked the added storyline of Emily bumping into her ex too as I felt it lightened the mood a bit in some parts.
Overall, a domestic thriller with plenty of secrets but who is telling the truth?
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This was well worth a read , very well written. Great characters amongst a family with lots of secrets and plenty of twists and turns . I would highly recommend this book , 5 stars from me
Amy is a midwife but one night makes a mistake. she then runs home to her Dad. However, when she arrives she finds a young French woman who her father has employed as his carer/housekeeper.
Amy doesn't like Francoise and the feeling is mutual. Both have secrets that will impact on their lives and relationship. When her father dies the situation deteriorates quickly for both of them.
Thanks to Jane and NetGalley for allowing me to read We All Have Our Secrets before the publication date.
Jane has spun a tale which started more than 70 years earlier and which has impacted on the lives of each of the characters in the story.
A midwife on a busy, understaffed ward, Emily makes a mistake.
Now she returns to her home in a small Cornish Village.
She is shocked to find that although she has spoken with him daily, her 93 year old father George has changed dramatically since her last visit.
A retired lawyer, George has always been difficult to work with, charming one minute and cantankerous the next.
As a result, no-one in the village is prepared to work for him.
Now a young woman, Francoise, has moved in as his carer and it is not long before there is friction between the 2 women.
Emily is concerned that Francoise is there to take as much from George as she can get and Francoise seems to gloat in flaunting the gifts which George has given her.
As George’s condition deteriorates, the issues spiral out of control.
Will the truth be revealed and what will be the consequences when the secrets are revealed?
