This book was a bit hit and miss for me. It started with a huge cliffhanger then totally ignored it for just about the rest of the book. I think because you were looking for a resolution to that cliffhanger that it somewhat disengaged you from the book. I wasn't too keen on the flashbacks either - sometimes they work in a book, this time I didn't think they did. Yes the book had secrets but equally it seemed to be full of lies/mis-directions too which I didn't really enjoy.
I really enjoyed this book, i was hooked from the beginning... as the storyline unfolds it reveals the secrets that are kept and have been kept in the background.... Harold Emily's father and the beautiful Francoise.... the second world war is a connection tying the past and the present. But there is more to unfold
This is a tale of love and revenge and will hold you until the end of the book
I really loved this book, I really enjoy Jane Corry's books, really easy to read, fantastic storyline, great characters...a book you don't want to put down.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel. We are presented with Emily, a midwife who has something happen to her on shift that changes the entire course of her life. She seeks solace in her Cornish family home only to find that there have been changes there that she wasn't aware of.
Throughout the course of the book, Emily's secrets unravel, as do her father's and other characters involved in the story. It's an interesting concept and really kept me 'hooked' to find out more!
I did, however, feel at some points the story was dragged out a little, and at times I found myself losing interest in parts of the characters back-stories that weren't fully explained, or took a long time to be fully explained. The writing was good, and plot of the story was definitely interesting, although potentially a little predictable at times. I would suggest this as a great book for those who like a novel with lots of twists and turns, especially a great read when getting away from it all!
Was excited to read this book and it started well but I think it loses it’s way somewhat in the middle.
I was intrigued by Emily at the start and really wanted to know more about her but when the other parts of the plot came in I felt it diluted things a bit and I didn’t see where it was going but not really in a good way.
Still enjoyed the read but not my favourite book.
Emma is suspended from her job and returns to her family home in Cornwall. There she finds her father is ill and being looked after by a beautiful young Frenchwoman, who seems to have become very close to him in the short time she's been there. Emma worries that Francoise is a gold digger, and when her father takes a downturn and dies more quickly than was expected she fears the worst. Meanwhile Francoise has her own suspicions about Emma. Who's telling lies? Relevant facts from the father's early life filter out but you will be guessing to the end who is straight and who's not.
Loved this story about Emily, who has been suspended from work, we do not quite know the reason until the end. This in itself keeps us in suspense. Bet there is more. She goes back to the family home to seek refuge with her widowed father. and when she arrives finds out he is being looked after by a mysterious new carer. There is much more suspense, twists and turns to come with a background of family secrets. I really warmed to the characters and enjoyed the story. A lovely bit of escapism for these troubled time. I would highly recommend this book.
I love this authors books and this one was no exception once I had started reading I was hooked and stayed up into the night to finish it. This is a standalone thriller with lots of twists and turns and moments
To make you hold your breath and gasp as you turn the page.
I liked that the story connected events of the past present and future and that these secrets from
The past all intertwined to make the story as did how the characters and their secrets all developed and unravelled as the story unfolded.
This was so much more than just a domestic thriller as also included aspects of a who did it crime read.
This was a total page turner and am already eagerly awaiting this authors next book.
A fantastic new thriller from Jane Corry.
At the beginning this book felt slow and I wasn't sure if it was going to pick up the pace but it definitely did.
I wasn't convinced on the plot at first. It seemed pretty tame at first but it definitely became more interesting as the story went along.
This book is full of twists and turns. I've not read a book in a long time which kept me on my toes as much as this one did.
The plot was really engaging. I was constantly trying to guess what was going to happen next but it was impossible to keep up.
It was a very engaging and interesting thriller which kept me hooked till the very very end.
I've read a few of Jane Corry's books before but having read this one, it definitely makes me want go back and read her other books, highly recommend!
Jane Cory has written three intriguing characters who pull you into their narratives with the secrets each separately hold. Emily and Francoise turn up at the home of Harold Gentle for reasons they don’t disclose until later. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the developing and changing relationships. A story that kept me reading as I wanted to find out the truth of what was going on.
Francois comes to look after an old man who can no longer cope on his own but the man’s daughter wonders if she has an ulterior motive
Interesting storyline and well drawn characters
Thank you to netgalley for the chance to read this Jane Corry book.
Im a massive Jane Corry fan so obviously i wanted to read this one. And i was not disappointed. This was brilliant, and kept me guessing the whole time, what were the secrets? Well this kept me on my toes and i love that the way Jane wrote this, it meant i just couldnt put it down i definitely recommend you read this is you are a Jane Corry fan, and i definitely recommend if you havent ever read one of her books as i guarantee this will turn you into a fan. Ten out of ten
Emily is a midwife who returns to her father’s Devon home after a disaster at work. She does not expect to have the door opened by Francoise, her father’s new French carer. The two women learn to care for Emily’s father, Harold, despite their dislike and distrust of each other. What are the motivations on each side, and who is keeping secrets? An involving and engrossing read.
This was okay but a bit too long and it lost pace as a result. Corry has included quite a few different plot threads in this and not all of them seemed that relevant. There is one in particular that although it did have relevance, I did not feel it added anything to the book and I just kept thinking why as I read it.
On a positive note, I did like the two main characters. They are intriguing characters and I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and following as the relationship between the two of them changed.
YOU KNOW SHE'S LYING... BUT SO ARE YOU
Two women are staying in Willowmead House.
One of them is running.
One of them is hiding.
Both of them are lying.
Emily made one bad decision, and now her career could be over. Her family home on the Cornish coast is the only place where she feels safe. But when she arrives, there's a stranger living with her father. Emily doesn't trust the beautiful young woman, convinced that she's telling one lie after another. Soon, Emily becomes obsessed with finding out the truth...
But should some secrets stay buried forever?
Jane Corry never disappoints with her twisty thrillers. What you know, you don’t. And what you’re not expecting, you get. The best thrillers keep you guessing and doubting everything you think you know, so that you feel compelled to keep turning the pages just to see if you were right. Chances are, you won’t be. And that’s the sign of a clever thriller writer. Mind games and lots of them! I would recommend this book to all thriller fans and anyone who just enjoys a damn good read.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an arc in exchange for an unbiased review.
A story of family, secrets, tension unspoken and unbroken. Misunderstandings based on false assumptions abound. The three main characters analyse the reasons behind one another's behaviour, and inevitably get these wrong on occasions, and in their actions, further compound the problems. This book is by turns intriguing and frustrating!
Emily & Franchise's lives collide in this story about families & secrets.
I enjoyed this at the start but then the characters really started to grate on me.
I liked the fact that all the loose ends were tied up by time the book finished.
A very interesting read. It had a lot of surprising twists, and challenged our misconceptions around various relationships. It was very well constructed and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
Not one of the author's best. A little too drawn out, and the secrets did not surprise or shock as I had expected them to.
Absolutely brill read it's different to what I been reading it was a refreshing change.
The characters were well written Francoise and Emilee and nick and loved the plot.its one them books u want finish but don't want finish.
