I really enjoyed this one! There was always that sense of unease and it just left you feeling off balance until the final reveal which I loved. There was nothing too over the top or just thrown in for shock value which added to the realism and relateability. The struggles with an aged parent who was ill was also incredibly well portrayed and that trauma and guilt that the suriving relatives are left with really did pull at the heart strings. All the characters were so well written and so relatable in their own ways, this is a perfect one to indulge I and just shut the world away!
Excellent book that makes you want to know more about their lives and secrets. Parts of the book are sad, but happy conclusion.
Another winner from Jane Corry. Certainly a page turner.
Emily, a midwife, goes to work even though she is feeling under par, and she makes a slight mistake that has repercussions for her and she decides to return to her parental home and visit with her father. On arriving she finds that he has employed somebody to assist him - a young, pretty, French girl. Should she be worried.
Really interesting and thoroughly absorbing.
Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
The story rattles along quickly as secrets unfold as we jump between war time France and many years later back at home.
The three main characters are well drawn and engaging in their own ways. I particularly enjoyed the first person narrative from Françoise.. Emily is a complex and secretive character who I was less drawn to, however she has a lot to deal with and you can understand her confusion and loss.
A charming book that anyone who enjoys good fiction will appreciate
This story mostly revolves around Emily who works as a midwife in London. She returns home to find a young woman living in her family home with her father. Emily doesn't trust the young woman and is convinced she is telling one lie after another, but is this woman the only one telling lies? This is a good gripping book with quite a few twists.
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me reading to the end, as I was interested to see what happened and what was the truth of the whole story. I'm not sure the character of the French girl really came to life for me as I found her a little difficult to believe in somehow, very stereotypical, though Emily was completely believable so maybe it was the contrast that didn't work for me. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep you interested, though I could have done without the added WW2 plot which I found a bit tedious in some ways, but maybe that's just me. The writing has a good pace and motors along well, so even if some parts don't grab you quite as much, then the next part will. I suppose that's always the problem with books that have several narrators and several stories going on, there's always one that grabs you more than the others. Overall, it does exactly what it says it will - lots of secrets and lots of page turning interest and intrigue!
Set in Cornwall, we follow the stories of Emily and Francoise whose lives are affected by the secrets they hide and keep to protect those they love. A good read. All about belonging. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
I am a huge fan of Jane Corry so was very excited to get an ARC. A very interesting thriller told from two different perspectives and then you have some flashbacks thrown in as well from a third party.
I enjoyed the first 80% of the novel and when I thought the story is now done it seemed there was still 20% left to read on my kindle. In my honest opinion the last 20% brought nothing to the book and was really unnecassary and irrelevant to the preceding story. I wish the editors would remove this part which could've been tied up in a couple of pages of epilogue if they really felt it needed to be added to the novel.
I received this book with thanks to Netgalley and the publisher and really enjoyed it to the point that I'm going to work my way through Jane Corry's other books. It had several twists and turns and I found it hard to put down.
Also, I didn't find it overly unrealistic, which some other thrillers can be.
This is a beautifully written novel about family secrets and the complexities of human relationships, the lies we tell and their impact across many years. The character development is incredible and with the story being told from both perspectives you get a fascinating insight into how feelings can affect interpretations. It deals with a complicated and complex subject deftly, creating an engrossing mystery that keeps you guessing to the last page.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Another great read from this author, good story line, good characters and a real page turner. Would recommend.
Emily made a serious mistake and now her career in London might be over. She seeks solace in her home Willowmead House in Cornwall. But when she arrives, stranger opens the doors, young and chic French woman is a new carer of her elderly father. Emily's suspicions are every day bigger.
After many conflicts between Emily and Francoise, father Harold dies and the doctor thinks that he was murdered. Both women are partly bad and partly good. But only one of them killed him. Which means one of them is lying.
The story flows and the characters are relatable and believable. The narrative shifts between both women and reader deduces that everything is based on a perception of events. And Harold Gently is oh so charming, yet he has a quick and fierce temper. A mixture of contradictions. Absolutely he is not what he seems to be. Everybody has secrets that weigh on them all their lives.
Beautiful and gripping read about forgiveness, empathy, understanding and above all trust and a need somewhere to belong.
I have raved about Jane Corry before but this, this is outstanding - undoubtedly her best yet. Two women, one house, both with their secrets and tied together by a man who has many secrets of his own. As each secret is revealed, new questions are raised and the depth of feeling for each character intensifies.
The ending is something of a surprise, but not a shock - I felt comfortable and satisfied by it, which doesn't always happen for me. I often find myself disappointed by rushed or lazy endings but this was perfect.
What I loved most was the way this was entirely about the women, their lives, their perspectives and their journeys. Up until I discovered Jane Corry and Lisa Jewell, this was something I'd been missing in my reading life and am overjoyed to have now.
I honestly struggled to tear myself away, reading in the car park at work and not leaving my car until the absolute last minute, but the satisfaction of the ending means that I didn't feel bereft when it was over. It was a wonderfully told, well rounded, story.
This was an intriguing read that really did leave you wondering what each character was holding back and just how everything fitted together. Emily is hiding from a mistake she made at work that had serious consequences which she’s finding it hard to face up to, when she escapes to her dads house she’s amazed to find he now has a live in carer she knew nothing of and suspects Francoise has ulterior motives. Told from both Emily and Francoise perspectives you get a good feel of their own stories and their resentments and suspicions towards the other and this ended with quite a twist yet it also oddly made sense.
Really enjoyed this book based on a omens complex relationship with her father and his new carer. Great character development that turns into a whodunit which is twisty and makes you want to keep reading. Really like this author
The 3 main characters, Emily, Harold and Francoise are well written and wholly believable, as are the emotions exchanges, particularly between the two women who are suspicious of each other and their motives for being at the house.
Emily is running from a work investigation that laves her fearing for her job and Francoise is caring for Harold, Emily's father.
There is plenty to be suspicious about and even though told from the view point of both women it is impossible to know who to trust until they finally start to trust each other.
Intriguing!
A few years back, I read a book by Jane and LOVED it! I have tried every book she has written since then, and they all fell flat. They sound so good, but lack depth and suspense. Thank you for this copy, however I think I'm done trying to get into her books.
I am a massive fan of Jane Corry and this did not disappoint. It was well written with a fantastic storyline that was full of suspense and characters that were well developed. The plot was full of mystery, twists and unpredictablility. A really enjoyable thrilling read.
Jane Corry is fast becoming a favourite author. I did love the book. The Emily/ Francoise story line was intriguing. Kept me interested and I couldn't wait to see how it all panned out. Well written with fully fleshed 3 dimensional characters that I was invested in.
One minor gripe.- the ending went on a bit- could have been sharper. Although I liked it I felt it dragged a little
A very good read which I thoroughly enjoyed
This book leaves you asking questions throughout, who is telling the truth? is it all as it seems?
Keeping you booked with the story this is a great read!
