Love BA Paris but this one was not my favorite. The first half was very good and highly engaging but the second half was so boring and the ending was just sudden. Quick read with a great main character but plot just didn’t deliver.
I enjoyed it. It was twisted and a page turner. It was definitely interesting and kept me guessing from the beginning to the end. Definitely would recommend this.
I was so excited to get my hands on this! B. A. Paris delivers another propulsive thriller filled with twists and turns. Kicking off with Amelia's kidnapping in part one, it jumped right into the action, then the aftermath in part 2. Another book which confirms B. A. Paris will stay on the skip the blurb, straight to the buy.
The only predictable thing about B.A. Paris novels is that they aren't very predictable. I like the small clues that give you small glimpses of potential outcomes.
B.A. Paris has become a must-read author for me.
Told in two parts and in two time periods, The Prisoner focuses on Amelia. At 16 years old Amelia’s father dies and leaves her with no one and nowhere to go. She moves to London to find a job. Once there she sees an older woman crying and discreetly follows her home. They soon become fast friends and Carolyn offers her a live in house keeper position. Skip to present day and Amelia wakes up not knowing where she is. Discovering she has been kidnapped and that her new wealthy socialite husband, Ned Hawthrope, has been as well.
When it appears that Ned’s father will not pay the ransom, both Ned and Amelia are understandable scared. Amelia searches for a way out but Ned searches for a way to scare his father into paying for him and only him.
This is a heart pounding page turner with a lot of twists. With hidden identities and hidden agenda’s nothing is as it seems. B.A.Paris has another bestseller on his hands. Highly recommend. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
A book in two parts - The Kidnapping and The Reckoning. Amalie is kidnappedwith her husband but has no idea why. It doesn't appear to be for money. What do they want? I think the part I most appreciated was the fact that Amalie used her brain to help solve this mystery, consciously deciding to listen and think when other senses have been removed. Unfortunately the supporting characters seem a bit vacuous and empty, not worthy of all the development that goes into Amalie's character. Inspite of that, I really enjoyed reading this one. B.A.Paris is an author that always provides an enjoyable read.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat and was super entertaining. Nothing can compare to "Behind Closed Doors" but I did enjoy this one more than some of the other newer books by this author.
Wow this was SO good. I read it all in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.
This thriller was split into two parts. Amelie being kidnapped with her husband, billionaire Jed Hawthorne. And then the aftermath.
I loved all the twists and turns and reveals throughout the novel. Just as I thought I understood what was going on, we get thrown a new angle.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for a good thriller that keeps you guessing!
BA Paris is back with another psychological thriller that kept the pages turning and me on the edge of my seat. Amelie is a teenager when her father dies and leaves her alone in the world. She ends up having a chance encounter that provides her with friends that become family and thrusts her into the path of Ned, the wealthy bad boy who propositions Amelie to a business deal of marriage. Amelie finds herself mixed up into a dangerous world that has so many twists that I had a hard time guessing what was next.
Amelie has been kidnapped. She wakes up in a dark room with nothing but a mattress, small bathroom, and tray of food that is delivered daily. She doesn't know who has captured her, but she does know why--her husband, Ned. Amelie meets Ned after moving to London as a 17-year old with nowhere to go. He is a wealthy, high-powered businessman who propositions him to marry him early on in their unusual relationship. The story is told from alternating past and present perspectives, allowing the reader to unfold the reasoning behind Amelie's ca[tire. I really liked this book at first, and was intrigued by the kidnap/ransom plotline. However, about halfway through it just became too much. The explanations at the end were cumbersome and I found myself reading passages multiple times to make sure I understood. I also felt there were too many plot holes and unfinished side stories. The book seemed to just drop off, without a proper ending. It could've used 50 or so more pages.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest feedback.
I loved the way this was written - flipping between the past ("how did we get here?") and the present tragedy. It was a great and quick read (took me about a day) and I really, really enjoyed it. The conclusion left a little to be desired, but overall I very much liked this book!
4/5 stars. I have recently discovered B.A. Paris and love their books! This one was just as good as Behind Closed Doors. The book is broken down into 2 parts. The beginning is where the story develops and switches from past to present, and then part 2 is the what happened after. Great thriller!
The Prisoner starts out fast and with much promise of a good thriller. Amelie has lost her last remaining parent by the time she is 16 years old. Destitute but so wanting to attend college, she leaves Paris for London and opportunities. She quickly finds herself nearing living on the streets status save for a chance encounter with a lovely lady named Carolyn. She is offered friendship, a roof over her head and a living wage. But that wasn't enough so she makes a deal with the devil.
The Prisoner uses a twin timeline of past and present allowing the reader to understand how Amelie becomes a kidnap victim. The claustrophobic atmosphere of her captivity drew me into her terrifying circumstances.
The story changes up in tempo, intensity, and believability in the second part entitled The Reckoning. This is where things fall short of the first half of the thriller. It is interesting and certainly allows the reader to know the who and why of it all but just wasn't up to the level of the first half.
Thank you to St.Martin's Press and Netgalley for access to an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
I was lucky enough to receive a widget from the publisher about this one. B.A. Paris is one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints.
This is a twisty tale about a simple girl trying to better herself after her papa died. She finds herself basically selling her soul to the devil and it gets her into trouble. She discovers she's been lied to and has only herself to count on. Her love interest was in on the whole situation and she resolves to perhaps forgive him in time.
While I've not read any sequels of B.A.'s books, I hope this one has a sequel because I think there are more to these characters!
After Paris's last book, I thought she had lost her touch. However, I stand corrected. This book is extraordinary. The pace is fast. The toggle from past to present help keeps me reading. It also helps the timeline and engages the reader. The characters are fully developed and have personalities that I can relate to. At times, Amelie's age does not match her actions or dialogue. It seems she is much older than her age which is in her teen years. Ned's motivation with Amelie doesn't truly make sense after reading the book. However, it does propel the storyline and makes the story great. A few open-ended questions at the end of the story leave me unsatisfied. I can guess the answer, but it's my perception. Overall, this is one of the books to read this year.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for letting me read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fast-paced short book that I read in about 4 hours! It was definitely suspenseful, and had some interesting twists, but I thought the plot and characters could have been further developed. I’ve read almost all of this author’s books, and Behind Closed Doors remains my favorite.
Thank you very much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’ve read all of B.A. Paris’ books, and some have been better than others. I really struggled to feel invested in this one. The way it begins, with a kidnapping and imprisonment, was meant to captivating but felt cliched and overdone. The flashbacks were confusing and I didn’t get enough character development for me to care about why she was imprisoned. I ultimately did not finish this one.
Amelie Lamont wants to become a doctor so others don't share the fate of her parents. Leaving France for London England she is befriended by Carolyn who hired Amelie as a live in housekeeper. Privileged Ned Hawthorne sets Amelia up with a deal using her need for money for school to get her to go along with this plan. A plan that gets them both kidnapped.
The terror Amelie experiences is well-written and the entire plot provides emotional shocks as we learn all of the details of the situation, during and after her imprisonment.
A bit of stretch at times, everything wraps up nicely with an open ending where you choose her fate. Not the endings I like so I was a bit let down. As always a B A Paris novel of suspense that was hard to put down.
This book had my attention from the very first sentence, and I didn’t want to put it down! The plot was intricate but easy to follow. I sure didn’t guess who the kidnappers were! If I had to think of a criticism, I’d say that I didn’t really like the ending. I felt like there wasn’t closure, like there should be another chapter. If you like psychological thrillers, then this book needs to be at the top of your list of books to read!
I received an advanced readers copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book by an author I have enjoyed in the past. I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately it fell flat. I got less than half way through and just didn't find it holding my interest. This was a did not finish for me.
