Thank you to NetGalley, B.A. Paris and St. Martin's Press for an ARC copy of The Prisoner.
I really enjoyed reading this story and it captured my interest from the very first page. The story begins with the abduction of the main character Amelie and her husband Ned. It was fun to try and figure out why it was happening, who the abductors were, and why they were being taken.
I enjoyed the flashbacks to the past because it added more context to the story. It was interesting to get more insight into Amelie.
The book is full of suspense, twists, and the ending is totally shocking. I definitely recommend adding The Prisoner to your reading list.
DNF @ 35%. I was intrigued at the very start and could feel the suspense and tension however, as the past timeline was slowly revealed, it diminished my enjoyment as it was over the top and unrealistic. I had no connection to the main character and didn’t care to continue. This was a miss for me but I remain a fan of this author and look forward to what she comes out with next!
Amelie has struggled most of her life and has now build herself a beautiful life. She married her wealthy husband and is enjoying her life. That is until she wakes up in a dark room locked away. Sadly she feels safer with her captors than she ever felt with her husband. As the mystery unfolds things come to light that will change her future.
This is a new to me author, but I will definitely be looking for more of her stories. if you enjoy mystery and suspense, I think you’ll enjoy this story. I know I can’t wait to read more of this authors works.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I flew through this one! A great, fast-paced thriller about a woman who is kidnapped with her husband for ransom & after surviving, goes to hunt the kidnappers down for answers. There’s so much to the book than the face value level of it. Definitely worth it if you’re looking for an entertaining & twisty thriller!
Amelie is a young woman who grew up in Paris and is now living in London, intent on turning her life into a success. All is going well until she wakes up and finds herself locked in a dark room with mysterious captors who bring her food every now and then. She has no idea why she’s here or what will happen to her, but is determined to survive at all costs.
This is another book where me being an outlier is a positive thing. I really enjoyed this one for the most part. I thought it was fast-paced, suspenseful, and mysterious enough to have me flipping the pages to find out what would happen.
The last 20% or so is where this one falls off the rails and heads into OTT territory and eye-rolling fiascos. Still, I was pleasantly surprised for the majority after being let down by the author’s last book.
A fast read that kept me hooked, and that was enough in this case.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Now available.
This was an interesting read - and despite the fact that I see quite a few negative reviews, I actually enjoyed this one. Are some of the situations a bit far-fetched? Sure. But overall I enjoyed this story of a young woman who's found herself stuck in a marriage of convenience to the heir of a billionaire - a husband who's turned out to be much more of a bad boy than the nice guy (and boss) she'd thought him to be. And difficult as it seemed to be a prisoner in that marriage, life becomes significantly more difficult when she and her husband become actual prisoners of mysterious captors. Clues and red herrings abound, and it takes a good while for the dual time lines (Amelie's past that led to her marriage and imprisonment, along with the present and her trying to piece together what's happening) to play out. I found it interesting and entertaining.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
I have read all of B.A.Paris books and always look forward to them. They are filled with suspense and drama and keep you on your toes. I'm not sure why I didn't love this one but I think it was just a little confusing. Meaning the plot was suppose to be twisty but for me it was confusing. Don't take my word for it, if you are also a fan go ahead and pick up a copy and hopefully t'll be a 5 star read!
This book pulled me in from the beginning. You're immediately dropped into the heart of the story. The past and present POV was a nice way to see the plot unfold.
Overall I enjoyed much of this book, but the pacing seemed off and I felt like the ending needed more to pull it all together.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
B.A. Paris always gets me. Their books never disappoint me and always leave me shaking my head questioning what I just read. I was anticipating "The Prisoner" from the moment I laid eyes on it. I felt all of the emotions Amelie was experiencing and the darkness surrounding her. I think sometimes our safety can be superficial as I believe Amelie soon discovered. When we are stripped bare, for lack of a better term, Amelie soon discovers what's real.
Thank you for leaving me watching my back after reading this.
Looking for a book you cannot put down?! The Prisoner is IT. This is an intense, twisted story with turns you will not see coming. Very, very well done B.A. Paris, as always!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's press for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. I really enjoyed this book, I felt the story was original, I really sympathized with our main character, and I love how descriptive the book was. I think the first part was better, in the second part I felt like too many things came out of left field and then by the end the story was rushed. I will say though the ending did an excellent job of answering ALL questions, so you are not left wondering anything. 4/5!
I have enjoyed B.A.Paris’ works a lot of times. Hence, I look forward to every book this author writes becaUse I already have the expectation of it being hood as always. Somehow, over the course of the first half of The Prisoner, I admitted to myself that I do not like this book. That alone is surprising even to myself who really enjoyed Paris’s work.
The story is about Amelie. The past and present Amelie. The time where Ned-her wealthy and rich husband and her-Amelie, have been kidnapped by not known people. I was reading this book and I wish I had at least listen to the audiobook and hoped that maybe it would have made a difference. It pains me to say, that most of the dialogues are very unpredictable. The turn of events were totally not surprising and some are unrealistic. It was a slow burn and got me bored for the most part. I am giving it a three because I like BA Paris, the writing of the book was good and it has a satisfying ending.
Thank you St.Martin’s press and Netgalley for always giving me an ARC.
Well, this is a disturbing thriller.
It's told in multiple timelines starting with the present day where a couple is kidnapped from their beds and held hostage in a home (in separate rooms) without knowing who their captors were. It goes back in time and tells the story in short snippets in between the present day kidnapping scene. It's incredibly tense but the writing is well-paces and will have you staying up way after bedtime to find out exactly what is going on.
Some intense triggers warnings around abuse, gaslighting and manipulation.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* This was actually pretty good and had me going until the very end, couldn't put it down!
This was my second book by this author and I really didn't like the first one I read so I went into this one with low expectations, turns out I actually really enjoyed it 🥰
The plotline was original, I had no ideas where it was going and I enjoyed the ride. The mystery is slowly built but at the same time the story is fast paced with the dual timeline. And by the end all of the questions have been answered.
If you are looking for something believable I would stay far away from this book. I don't think this exact story could be possible in real life but it is what makes it fun!!
I will be looking to read more of this author in the future, hopefully her other books are more like this one and less like Bring Me Back 😅
Thank you @netgalley for the review copy of this book and obviously I was so late on reading my arc that the book came out before 🤦♀️🤣
While at the end of the year this doesn't stand out as a must read, it still was entertaining and kept me guessing, and that's exactly what I need in a thriller.
Amelie has lost her father and completely alone. When she leaves her small town and heads out on her own, she had a dream of getting a job and going to college. While homeless she meets the wealthy Carolyn who offers her a live in job, they become quite close and consider each-other friends. This is how she meets Ned, Ned is the son of a wealthy family and is use to getting what he wants. On a whim Amelie begins working for him, so when he offers her a trip to Vegas she takes it. A few days later Amelie and Ned are married it’s more of a business agreement, and immediately she realizes she's made a huge mistake and the agreement they made has cost her everything.
Amelie and Ned find themselves kidnapped and locked in separate rooms, and their being held for ransom. She wonders who has taken them and is she able to escape? Who are her mysterious captors? We follow Amelie as she’s being held captive in the present and we soon learn her past and what led to them being kidnapped. This was a twisted story and I enjoyed it!
This was quite the thriller for me! Amelia wakes up in a dark room having no idea where she was and how she got there. She is held captive and we slowly learn about her past. The story really unfolded nicely.
This convoluted story reads like a collaboration by B.A. Paris, Liv Constantine, and David Bell, together vying for a book Razzie.
Part I: The Kidnap alternates between the present, in which the narrator is taken and held hostage (palpable terror!), and past—the four years leading up to this point (utterly flat).
Part II: The Reckoning (anticlimactic) ultimately shifts from show to tell, with a conversation explaining the entire plot for the last 11% of the book that ends on a ridiculous note.
Go stream "Wait Until Dark," HBO's "Succession," and FX's "Trust" in substitution.
