I just really didn’t connect this one. I really enjoyed the beginning, but then started to lose interest. Not sure why, maybe just too predictable.
This was a fun weekend read for me. While somewhat predictable and a bit slow, It was overall entertaining.
I always find BA Paris books take extra twists that I don’t see coming and The Prisoner was no exception.
Amelie has lost her parents and runs off to London to make it on her own. She meets a woman who helps her out and she becomes part of a friend group. This leads her to meeting Ned Hawthorne who is a billionaire.
Things with Ned aren’t quite what they seem and she finds herself waking up in a pitch black room with only a mattress on the floor. She doesn’t know who her captors are or what they plan to do with her.
There were parts of this book that I flew through and made me not be able to put it down (definitely fell asleep in bed more than one night holding my kindle 😅)
With every BA Paris book, I didn’t fully see the final twist coming and I loved it.
For me this was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Stmartins press’s for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion. This book is out now!
3.5 ⭐️ I read every book that comes out by this author and have enjoyed all of them! This book starts out strong and keeps you on your toes with a suspenseful story. I like the present and past time lines that help you gain more knowledge of the situation and guess what going on. Thank you #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was the second book I’ve read by B.A. Paris and I enjoyed this one just as much as the first!
The Prisoner is a fast paced thriller that kept me guessing until the end! I became invested in Amelie's struggle immediately and found myself wanting to read “just one more chapter” until I could finish.
I enjoyed how the book was written (this added a bonus twist for me) and I appreciated the chapters being short. This made me feel I was making great progress getting through the book.
This is a solid thriller that I’d definitely recommend. Be sure to check out B.A. Paris’ other books too!
This book was amazing! Right from the very first t page I followed along with the story of Amelie and how she got herself into some trouble with a horrible, awful, no good Ned. I can imagine the temptation to get school paid for but the price Amelie paid was so much more.
This story twists and turns and races along, I wanted the race through while also wanting the book to not be finished. This is a hard review to write since I don’t want to give anything away. It’s heartbreaking and there are lots of regrets for the main characters. You won’t regret picking this book up!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s press for the chance to read this AMAZING book.
The Prisoner by B. A. Paris pushed all of my buttons when I came across its description: a woman held captive by persons unknown but through some domestic mishaps that are the focal point of so many thrillers right now.
The reality, unfortunately, whas disappointing in almost every aspect.
Orphaned young and hoping to go to college, Amelia is both broke and dangerously afloat. When she stumbles across a job by befriending a privileged woman in a coffee shop, she can't believe her luck. Amelie, however, is not one to pass up an opportunity, even when she's in a stable situation. She agrees to an unholy alliance with rich playboy Ned Hawthorne, and everything goes straight to hell--then lands them both in separate rooms-cum-cells for what seems like forever. Amelie knows that Ned will be useless in an escape attempt, so her safety is all in her own hands ...
Sounds fresh and interesting, right? Nope. Amelie was predictable and in no way deserving of what accolades she was given by her new friends. Grant was even more predictable as a spoiled rich jerk. And the whole story moved so slowly that I kept wishing the kidnappers would kill one or both soon so we could move on.
I loved B.A. Paris's first thriller, Behind Closed Doors, and I've read nearly all of them since, so I'm always happy to see a new Paris title. The Prisoner has some themes similar to her other books: our unreliable narrator is a young woman with a questionable husband to whom something bad has happened and she must figure out who and why. In this case, Amelie is not unreliable because she's an alcoholic or similar; she's been kidnapped and locked in a pitch-black basement, so she can't trust her own senses. She hears her husband Ned nearby and we wonder if he is truly a fellow victim or part of the crime. And what is the crime?
Amelie is likable; she doesn't make irrational decisions, and she doesn't miss many obvious clues, both pet peeves of mine. Ned is not particularly likable, just like most of Paris's men. I enjoyed this book and finished it quickly. I'd recommend for any fans of Paris or suspense thrillers in general, not so much if you're looking for a literary take on this plot, like Emma Donoghue’s The Room.
I have read and loved all of B. A. Paris’s novels. She’s a favorite of mine for a reason!!
I LOVED the first 3/4 of this one. It was exciting and intriguing wondering what was really going on throughout this kidnapping and ransom story.
It definitely kept me engaged and turning the pages to get some answers in this twisted tale of marriage gone bad.
But the end fell so flat. 😭
I understand not every story will have a big twist or something shocking at the end and I’m OK with that, but I was so disappointed that the last part of the book is just explanation about what happened. It wasn’t insightful or interesting. It kind of ruined the rest of the book for me (because the whole time I was trying to guess what/who was responsible).
I would still recommend it because I really did love most of it!
2.75 stars?? I kind of guessed the plot and the players pretty early on.
Amelie marries Ned because she needs money, but she soon finds out he’s not at all what he seems. Soon after, they’re both kidnapped.
Told from Amelie’s POV we move through the past and the present during the first part of the book.
Part two is all present, what happens after the kidnapping and Amelie working to solve the mystery and the “why” of the kidnapping.
There were a lot of things that happened that I feel were unnecessary and made the story more complicated than it could have been.
Thank you Netgalley for this eARC
Love love B.A. Paris. This is the second book from Paris that I’ve received from Netgalley. This was a quick read for me. One pov but from different times: the past and the present.
Amelie has recently married a billionaire. Now she has been kidnapped. Why? She has secrets that just may be the key to her survival.
I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. Honestly, I had to keep reading to find out if I was right and what the twist would be. However, I felt rather letdown by the ending. I’ve read multiple BA Paris books and this is probably my least favorite of them.
The book starts finding Amelie imprisoned, but she doesn’t know by who or why. The story goes back and forth between her being a prisoner and how the story lead up to that moment. Some chapters felt rushed and others drawn out, but it was good to get both parts of the story and kept it interesting. There are many characters, some you’ll love and some you won’t. Overall it keeps you guessing and clarifies (most) everything in the end.
I give it a 3-3.5 stars for the fact that I couldn’t wait to finish and find out what happened, but overall I enjoyed the author’s prior books a lot better.
Thank you netgalley and stmartinspress for the opportunity to read this early digital copy in exchange for my thoughts.
This was a good and interesting read. The story line kept my attention and it was a pretty fast read. I would have preferred a slightly different ending but it all tied up nicely and all questions were answered in the end. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy. I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
I have so many unanswered question. What was the deal? How did all these people end up in each other's circles? Why are most the uber-rich folks somewhat unhinged? What is going on with charities and their role in this weird world? Why was this 21 year-old selected as both accessory and victim in this scheme? I have questions and I need answers.
B.A. Paris started to leave me with more and more questions after every new book. Behind Closed Doors was entertaining and intriguing, but the others left me wanting a second book to make sense of some gaps. Sure, it was a page turner. I wanted to learn who was behind that chaos and how all small pieces fell into place.
One thing you need to get out of this book is that it doesn't matter how much money you are offered, don't marry on a whim. Someone who could ask you that question has less to lose than you would. Also, "doubling everyday" is always a good option, especially when people are mathematically disabled.
You would think that a story of a woman locked in a room would struggle to keep the reader engaged but the author did such a good job of building suspense that you'll keep turning the pages.
Nope. I remember loving Behind Close Doors and then not loving another BA Paris book for years. Then the Dilemma came and I really enjoyed that one. And here we are again. After just not enjoying the last two books this author put out, I am going to no longer read their work. I respect them as a writer, and I could only imagine how hard writing a book is. But this was just messy and the ending just annoyed me.
B.A. Paris does it again. I could not put this down. Complex characters wrapped up in an intense mystery! Recommend!
Yet another amazing read by this author! She’s a huge hit in my small town library so I did not expect anything less than amazing. She is a true gem. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This story started with so much potential and just fizzled towards the end. I am an HUGE fan of this author, I will read anything written by B.A. Paris but this story did not feel like what I am used to reading by this author. a majority of this book had hooked but as the ending came to a reveal, i felt as if it could have been so much more, which is what I expect from this author. The writing, as always, is excellent.
Finally, after many duds, there’s another B.A. Paris book I enjoyed! This was a fast-paced thriller that kept me guessing. I enjoyed the characters and thought they were well-developed. I felt sympathy for Amelie’s situation and loved her friends. For me, this was the best book from this author since her debut, Behind Closed Doors.
