This one had a lot of layers and was really interesting to read. The MC was resilient and smart, despite her predicament, and I was very invested in her story. A great thriller overall and I definitely recommend!
As always, B.A. Paris absolutely killed it with this one! Wow! It pulled me right in from the first page, and I could not put this down! You are in for a ride with this one. Highly recommend!
I really enjoyed this one. B A Paris knows how to write isolation and confinement, and the trauma that comes along with that, so well. I was hooked from the first page and thought about it in the moments I wasn’t reading. I loved the revenge vibes of this story. Though I had a sneaking suspicion of who the captor was, I still liked how everything unfolded, especially the final chapter of the book.
Amelie faces struggles at a young age and moves to London with nothing and no one to help her. She struggles but makes a life for herself and surrounds herself with good friends. One day Amelie wakes up not knowing where she is and not being able to see anything because she is in a room shrouded in complete darkness. As the story progresses Amelies activities from the past are slowly revealed and we find out how she came to be a prisoner in a dark room.
Alternating between the past and present the story had me hooked from the first chapter. I was intrigued by Amelie’s story and how she found herself imprisoned and married to a billionaire. The pacing at the beginning of the book however did not match the pacing in the last third of the book. The story seemed to drag on and the ending was not as satisfying as I would have liked. It was a good thriller but not as strong as Behind Closed Doors which is one of my absolute favorites.

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press, and the author for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This story takes off immediately with a kidnapping and continues to bounce back and forth between the past and present. While I was initially hooked by Amelie being held captive in a pitch black room, I got bored quickly with those chapters and found myself enjoying the backstory more. I liked the feminist theme, but the ending wasn’t as satisfying as I’d hoped.
Usually I get sucked in to Paris’s novels, but this one was just middle of the road. I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t bad. Definitely not the one to start with if you’re new to this author.
My rating: 3.5/5
This was the first book that I’ve read by B.A. Paris, and it will definitely not be my last. I loved it! I have heard great things about her books, and I understand why.
The the early chapters, I was slightly concerned that the entire story would be about somebody being held prisoner, but it developed into so much more. All of the twists kept me guessing until the very end.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for letting me read this book!
A dark psychological thriller that's a fast paced page-turner. Written in BA Paris' signature style with some shocking twists. Overall an entertaining read and a good time for thriller lovers.
Omg this book is so insane!! If you like a twisty thriller this is 100000 percent for you. Everything you thought you knew, constantly changed, it had my head spinning. I've read a ton of other book by B.A. Paris and they all have the most shocking twists, but this one had the rest beat by miles.
I loved the main character. She was really likeable and strong and had a decent head on her shoulders. The pace of this story was fantastic. It had really short quick chapters that flashed back from past and present and it really kept the story moving.
You have to read this book! I swear you won't regret it. I struggle reviewing it without giving too much away but I was SHOCKED. Read this if you liked "The Silent Patient"
Thank you to Net Galley and BA Paris for aLowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This story was told in alternating timelines between the past and the present.
In the present Amelie and her husband Ned have been kidnapped and are being held for ransom.
In the past Amelie is a struggling orphan who happens to find someone to rescue her and take her in. She easily befriends a group of women. They become her closest friends.
At first I found the kidnapping exciting and interesting, but it soon became repetitive and boring. I didn’t find myself caring at all what happened to Ned and Amelie.
I also thought there were too many characters involved in the kidnapping and what transpires afterwards.
I absolutely loved this book! B.A. Paris never disappoints. Ameile has become an orphan a couple years before her 18th birthday and decides to relocate before she ends up being placed in the system. She ends up getting lucky and meeting a woman to help her. She makes a few friends that she really cares about. Ameile ends up in a situation that there's no way out of and she didn't realize the consequences until it's too late. There's not much to say because it could spoil the entire book. There are twists that you won't see coming, although sometimes you get a hint here and there. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
This book was great. Fast-paced. I read it in two days. Probably could have done it in one, but life. I was intrigued from the beginning & kept wondering throughout. Did not see the ending coming, so that’s always a nice turnout.
This book was 100% awesome from cover to cover. I enjoyed the characters and the mystery. I never knew what was going happen...not once!!! I loved how the story was so brilliantly paced. Additionally, there was one of the most rewarding conclusions I have read in a VERY long time! I cannot recommend this one enough because it is truly perfect!!!! The audiobook was also so well done! A must read and a must listen...the perfect combo!
Great story that made me mad, sad and all kinds of in between.
Amelie married Ned for money. He promised her so much money for her to go to law school and only had to be married to him for 30 days.
But that's when things start going wrong and he turns out to be a liar and a whole lot of other bad news.
Amelie had 3 best friends that she met when she moved to town. Her dad had passed away and she had nothing and was starting over. she met Ned through them.
After her and Ned are married they are kidnapped for ransom. As I kept reading this though I had a feeling that they really didn't want her or to hurt her.
I couldn't stop reading and another great book by this author,
Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this book to review.
This book hooked me from the beginning! I read it in one day, and enjoyed every moment of it! The ending got a little convoluted, which is where it lost a star for me, but overall, I really enjoyed my time reading this book and trying to figure out what was happening and who was responsible. B.A. Paris writes very simple, yet engaging thrillers, and I always look forward to her next release!
very complex feelings about this one! i really liked the start but it fel off for me near the end. slightly better then a previous book by author
Dark and chilling, The Prisoner takes the reader on a white-knuckled thrill-ride that includes kidnapping and murder. The pace is fast due to short chapters leaving me sleepless at night – just one more chapter!
There were plenty of surprises in this smart, action packed, well-written thriller. Though there could have been more character development, the story was skillfully plotted. I am a huge fan of B.A. Paris and looking forward to her next book.
Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
"Amelie has always been a survivor, from losing her parents as a child in Paris to making it on her own in London. As she builds a life for herself, she is swept up into a glamorous lifestyle where she married the handsome billionaire Ned Hawthorne.
But then, Amelie wakes up in a pitch-black room, not knowing where she is. Why has she been taken? Who are her mysterious captors? And why does she soon feel safer here, imprisoned, than she had begun to feel with her husband Ned?"
This domestic thriller is told through Amelie's POV. Amelie is the typical young, naïve woman that is so often portrayed in this type of story. While I think that the young naïve woman with the powerful, rich man can serve a story well, I don't always enjoy this trope and it often feels overdone.
There are several twists and turns throughout the story that kept me engaged, but felt a little drawn out at times. Overall I did enjoy this book and I was able to listen to the audiobook version pretty quickly. If you are a B A Paris fan or are just looking for a domestic thriller I would recommend this book.

Unfortunately I had really high expectations and unfortunately they weren’t met. But it wasn’t bad, the timelines and planning could of been written a little better in my opinion. I’m no author but as a reader I would of liked to see that.
Amelie is trying to make a go of it. She has lost her parents and she has moved to London to get a new start. She ends up marrying a billionaire…YES…You heard me right! But, it is an arrangement to help her reach her college goals. However, her husband, Ned, is not the person she thought he was. Then she and Ned are both kidnapped and kept prisoner for ransom.
Amelie is a naïve, young lady thrown into a situation she cannot get out of. Her husband is a piece of work and y’all will just have to read this and find out how bad he really is. Then there are the kidnappers. Geez, this girl just can’t win! Talk about captivating!
Lord have mercy, this story is intricate, intense and fierce. There were places in which I was gasping for air. Now, I did fluctuate between 4 and 5 stars. I think, basically, it is a bit far fetched. But, then again, is it really? See my dilemma!?!
I enjoyed this narrator, Georgia Maguire. She just does a great job, especially during the intense sections! This is really how I measure a narrator. If they can get the intense sections right, then they are excellent in my book!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
This is my second B. A. París novel, and they never fail to disappoint in the twist and turns department. I was on the edge of my seat the entire first 2/3, but feel like the ending was missing the same energy. I really enjoyed this book overall, very suspenseful and a quick read!
