The Prisoner is an intense read in which the past and present alternate. There is a lot to take in and process. It is a totally captivating book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
"The Prisoner" was another jaw dropping mystery/thriller by B.A. Paris.
The storyline was unique & the mystery built slowly by going back & forth between past & present timelines.
The twists kept coming to keep me reading way past my bedtime.
I can't wait to read the next book by Ms. Paris.

This was an okay read, but definitely not my favorite of Paris's. The first half of the book was good, and I was engaged...if only it had continued on that way, but unfortunately it did not. This is a slow burn as the tension and suspense build up slowly. I think that the plot was unique and the writing was good, and I did enjoy the dual timeline. The issue I have with this one is the lack of any character development. Also, a lot of things seemed to be way too far fetched for me, unbelievable, and therefore unrelatable. It also seemed to lack any suspense or tension compared to her previous books. The ending felt rushed and jumbled and left me with questions and feeling unsatisfied. One thing I did love were the short chapters, making it easy and quick for me to read.
This was a miss for me, although the premise seemed interesting and sounded promising-the lack of character development, the extremely slow pace, lack of suspense/tension, boring characters, and the many plot holes are what sunk this one for me. However, I am still a B.A. Paris fan and I do plan on reading her future work
Love the books by this author , including this one! Was a slow burn but it does keep you wanting to read more to find out the end !
Riveting! This is one of those books that you have to pick up and read in every spare moment! You want to put everything else on hold so you can just sit and read - yes, it’s that good! Psychological suspense at its absolute best!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
B.A. Paris has written another thriller that will knock your socks off. The Prisoner is full of tension and angst as Amelie, a naïve young girl, moves to London after the death of her widowed father and gets a job working at a company owned by Ned, a lecherous sociopath. Amelie walks into a trap with Ned and travels to Las Vegas for a meeting, only to get talked into marrying him to anger his father. Ned’s life is full of lies, and he’ll do anything to hurt his own family. What the wealthy will do to get payback is pretty amazing. But Ned has more significant problems than his billionaire Father, and he has too many enemies. Ned and Amelie are kidnapped for ransom and held for a long time to extract money from Daddy-dearest. Or are they? The story is told from Amelie’s perspective after being shut down in a dark room for many days. But not all is as it seems, and the ending is pretty delicious. The publication date is November 1, 2022…buy the book. #thriller #murder #kidnapping #torture #ThePrisoner @baparisauthor @stmartinspress @netgalley #naive #mystery #money #payback #psychologicalthriller #secrets

I was incredibly excited for this book as B.A Paris is one of my favorite authors. The story was great, fast paced and really engaging but the ending really fell flat for me. Although I didn’t know what was going to happen next and didn’t really predict anything, it was just an “oh okay” moment for me.
This starts off with Amelie kidnapped and in a dark room, but she doesn’t remember how or why she got there. The timeline works back and forth from current day to the past leading up to the kidnapping where more is revealed regarding Amelie herself and the situation she has found herself in. I was hooked from the beginning, and then the second part of the book was not as gripping as the first, but I still enjoyed it overall.
I listened to this one via audiobook and the narrator, Georgia Maguire, did a great job but I did find it hard to keep some of the characters straight at times. Overall, I liked this one, it was an easy, quick read and B.A. Paris is an author who’s books I really enjoy!
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for the ALC and digital copy to review. Pub date is 11/1/22.
I am a fan of BA Paris’ work but this one fell flat for me. I enjoyed the short chapters and the first part of the book. The second half lost steam and the ending was a lot of telling of what happened (as opposed to letting it unfold in the plot). A miss for me this time around.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book which bumped my rating up a star. It was engaging and it reminded me a bit of Behind Closed Doors. The second half was boring and drug on too long. Overall, it was an easy read and I liked the shorter chapters, but I found it predictable and the ending wasn't very satisfying.

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris was am exciting ride in the mind of Amelie, an orphaned young adult who is finding her way in London. Amelie stumbles into the path of Carolyn, who takes her in as her housekeeper and introduces her to her well to do friends. Amelie feels like she's finally made it: a place to live, a job, and even friends. The only thing missing is enough money to go to college, so that she can be a lawyer.
Then Amelie goes on a last minute trip with a real high roller, and is given the chance of a lifetime. Get married in Vegas for 100,000 British Pounds.
But this is only the beginning of the end for Amelie, as her comfortable life slips from her fingers. The story is told in alternating timelines that eventually converge. This was an entertaining read for sure, but doesn't hold a candle to Behind Closed Doors, one of the author's earlier books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC.
"The Prisoner" is a decent thriller with an interesting enough story line. However, the plot was rather predictable, as were the "twists," so it ended up being just an OK book.
I'm having a hard time with this one. Part One was great. It was thrilling, I was hooked, couldn't put it down. Part Two was ... not. The last 10% of the book felt like telling, not showing. It did that thing I didn't like: 'here's a long winded explanation of everything.' There were also a lot of characters, and it became confusing at time to keep track of who was who and the relationships between them. By the end of Part One, I was ready to give this 5 stars, maybe Paris's best novel I've read. Unfortunately, I think the latter half of the book (and the ending specifically) has dropped me down to 3.5 stars, at most.
The Prisoner by B.A. Paris is a fresh return to the WTF kind of thriller I love from this author. While this was a sort of miss for me as the story line got a bit convoluted toward the end for me, I did appreciate the twists. And then that end! Excuse me?! WTF indeed. I don’t want to give too much away, but Amelie’s story is told between alternating past and present chapters in such a way that you are almost to the edge of your seat the entire time you are reading.
I am giving this one three and a half stars total, mostly for the way it entertained me and kept me guessing right until the end.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was hooked from the first sentence of this novel. I was invested in the main character and in figuring out what was happening to her. There were multiple attempts on my part to guess what was happening, and I was rarely correct (something I love in a thriller). The ending seemed a little bit of a cop out, however. That said, it does leave the door open for a follow up so who knows where it could lead…
it felt flat to meeee the whole storyyyyyyy ugh I felt so sad that I felt this way. I kept wishing there was more and it led me to DNF this book
*Le Sigh*
I wanted to love this one so much because I devoured The Therapist but this one fell so flat for me. The first half held my attention and I felt like the speed was on par. But after halfway through I found myself lacking curiosity and it lulled a bit. I found the kidnapping chapters to be repetitive and a bit wordy. I did enjoy Amelie as a protagonist but the story was a big miss for me, ugh.
From looking at other reviews I seem to be in the minority but I really enjoyed this book! It kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the end. I liked Amelie and thought her backstory was sad and she was incredibly lucky to meet Carolyn and her friends. The story starts kind of in the middle and then has back story chapters and then everything catches up to current time towards the end. I know this book is on the smaller side and I always like small chapters but I really flew through it as I couldn't put it down!
I ❤️ a book with short chapters and if you are coming in at a reasonable page count, you already have my vote.
This is my 2nd book by B.A. Paris. My first was Behind Closed Doors (3⭐️) and I have 0 recollection of what that was about.
We all know dual timelines can be hit or miss, but I thought it worked well here.
A couple gets kidnapped and the mystery is who kidnapped them and why...
This was a buddy read and had us both guessing until the end.
I was 💯 completely emersed in this story until the 75% mark, but when things started to come together, there were too many cooks in the kitchen.
It was a little disjointed and quite frankly, disappointing.
This one was so good, until it wasn't.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
The Prisoner starts off with Amelie being abducted from her home and held prisoner in a pitch black room.
Amelie had it rough her whole life until she met and moved in with her friend Carolyn. She was introduced to millionaire Jed Hawthorne and he immediately offered her job. Shortly after, he whisked her away to Vegas for a business trip. The business trip was nothing Amelie expected, and quickly turned into the biggest mistake of her life.
Absolutely fantastic! I’ve been a huge fan of BA Paris for years and this book tops my list! It grabbed me from the first sentence and kept me on my toes until the end. I read the first half and listened to the audiobook for the second half. I recommend both, the narrator was easy to listen to and the chapters aren’t overwhelmingly long.
