Tense and claustrophobic, The Prisoner is an intense tale of deception, assault, revenge, and redemption. Told in alternating timelines and multiple parts, it tells the story of Amelie, a young girl struggling to find her way. In an incredible instance of good luck and fortune, she meets a Carolyn who is somewhat of a savior for Amelie. Then comes Ned, not such savior, to say the least.
I don’t want to give too much away. But this book is full of twists and turns. The short chapters and need to know what happens next next kept me turning the pages very quickly. I would recommend this book to fans of the thriller genre. It definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy.
I’m a huge fan of B.A. Paris and I enjoyed The Prisoner - Mostly because the premise is one that is cat nip to my little kitty heart; a dark locked room and the ever-present question: why? The reader will find out but only after getting to know the MC, Amelie, past and present.
Amelie is the type of character that I will always root for; someone who’s had nothing but bad happen to them yet still manages to be good at heart. And, as so often happens, these good people are often prey for those that would take advantage of their good nature and broken spirits.
Held captive with her husband, a billionaire with questionable ethics, Amelie begins the long process of questioning not only why she’s there but what possible involvement the secondary characters in her life might have.
The plot is twisty and complex, and I felt like the ending wrapped things up but was a bit anticlimactic to where my mind was going but that’s on me because I’m notoriously bad at guessing and then letting myself down – IRL, I’m the one who you’ll find hiding in the closet with the killer.
I listened and read this, a process I enjoy because most of my reading is done at night and I listen during the day. Perfect for this scenario and the narrator was phenomenal, I think she carried the story beautifully!
My thanks to @Macmillan.Audio for this gifted ALC and to @StMartinsPress for the gifted DRC.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The beginning pages weren't very captivating to me. I say this even though the main character was kidnapped and that's how the book starts. The opening just wasn't moving as fast as I had hoped it would.
With that being said - I really enjoyed it. By the middle part of the book (or part 2) is when it really picked up for me. I found myself drawn back to the Netgalley app on my phone to find out what happened. I will definitely keep this author on my radar.
B.A. Paris has brought forth another tantalizing, spellbinding, tale, that captures the reader from page 1. All in, the midst of this psychological thriller, was, I , from the moment I sensed the characters, tense emotions. The last page is where I finally, sighed….B.A. Paris’ ability to move thru time flipping the switch yet, keeping pace with every gasp. Spellbinding!
I was so happy to get an ARC of The Prisoner and couldn’t put this one down! It’s a great twisty page turner for anyone who loves a thriller. I can’t wait for my friends to read this one
This was nuts!! I loved this one so much, such a great interesting thriller mystery. I can totally see this being the next WOMAN IN THE WINDOW... the twists this one goes on! BA Paris did such a great job of creating a unique setting and play with the genre.
This book was so damn repetitive. The way the story is set up is very odd, almost like two books in one. I don't understand the reasoning to start again at Chapter 1 halfway through the book - it made me so confused! The past and present timelines didn't really line up well or support each other throughout the story. Nothing really happened that was exciting. Not thrilling whatsoever. Oblivious and one-dimensional characters that you just shake your head and roll your eyes at throughout.
I'm sorry B.A Paris, I've read almost every single one of your books now and I just keep seeing the same old common trend. I think I will be skipping anything new from this author.
One thing I do give credit for is this one wasn't AS bad as 'The Dilemma'.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for providing me with an advanced E-book and Audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review.
For any die-hard BA Paris fans, this book hits shelves November 1st, 2022 !
I’ve read all of B A Paris’s books and have always been a fan. This was a good story, though I thought the murders were excessive….and hard to believe the coverups were believed. Main character seemed too gullible and the bad guy was grossly bad.
The Prisoner was definitely a book that was hard for me to put down once I started. The suspense. The twists and turns until the very end. I very much enjoyed reading it and felt that it kept me at the edge of my seat. Thank you St Martins Press and Netgalley for my ARC.
I have really enjoyed B.A. Paris books in the past but I struggled a bit with the pacing of The Prisoner. It could very well be my timing but I found this a bit tedious to read. The kidnapping piece at the beginning was intriguing but I think I felt confused with the dual timelines.
I really enjoy getting the backstory in books, but I just struggled with the way this one came together. It felt like a slow road to the abrupt finish and I wish for more depth for some of the characters that maybe would have helped this come together fully. This could definitely me a "it's me, not you!" reading experience, but this just wasn't one of my favorite Paris novels.
As always, I appreciate having the opportunity to read and review this book and share my genuine thoughts. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for my gifted copies.
B A Paris didn't disappoint with her newest book. I was a little let down by her last book, The Therapist. The Prisoner, however, was everything I love about her books. She pulled me in immediately with her writing and how she is able to immerse you into the characters world. I also really enjoyed the back and forth between the present and the past until the time line aligned between the two. The only thing I would have liked more was in the end to have the final interaction tied up in a pretty bow. I wanted more closure. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I’m super excited to have received Paris’ new book, having read the others & enjoying them a lot. The first third of the book I was definitely confused. There’s two stories going on (past & present) but why Amelie’s past is relevant to her kidnapping, I couldn’t discern immediately. Then the story really picks up & all the pieces came together in a very thrilling way. Oooh there is some really great comeuppances. I particularly loved the ending. If you liked Behind Closed Doors you’ll enjoy this one!
I’ve read every one of B.A. Paris’ books. I enjoyed this one as I did the others. This book was not as suspenseful as “Behind Closed Doors or The Breakdown, but it still grabbed my attention the whole way through. The character was younger than the normal lead characters in her books. She was smart, strong and beautifully vulnerable. I was 80/20 happy about the ending. 80 being the happy/content part. The author stuck to her authentic type of writing leaving a plot twist at the end. That’s probably why I can accept it. Paris is consistent. I thought for sure the storyline was going to go an absolute different way. That’s what I love about Paris’ books. You are always guessing. 99% of the time her endings are what you least expect as the outcome.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so sucked into a thriller before! This had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter. Twists and turns were everywhere but in the best ways.
With murder, kidnapping, and so much revenge, this was SO captivating and truly hard to put down.
I’ve never read a B.A. Paris book before this, but I’ve got several on my TBR list now!
Read this if you want to be kept wanting to know more each and every page. Read this if you need a fantastic psychological thriller having you second guess all that you guessed throughout the book. Read this period.
Overall, this was a great fast paced book. I didn’t see most of the twists and turns coming. Definitely a worthy read.
The premise of this one was interesting but the writing style was not for me. I didn’t like the alternating timelines on the kidnapping right at the beginning with the main character entering her new lifestyle. Overall this one seemed kind of second best and cheesy. Just not my cup of tea
BA Paris is back with another edge of your seat unputdownable thriller!
I was glued to my seat as I turned page after page dying to know what would happen next.
Imagine marrying into a family only to be betrayed…
Riveting!
Loved this book such a page turner . I would recommend this book and author to my friends . I would read more books by this author.
Much thanks, as always to NetGalley and St. Martins press for the advance read of "The Prisoner" in exchange for an honest review.
Well, honestly, as much as I've enjoyed staying up late with previous B.A. Paris thrillers, this one ended up as a disappointment.
I was completely on board and riveted with the book's first half, with alternating before/during/after chapters detailing a young woman's rocky backstory and her ordeal as a kidnap victim.
Amelie, a suddenly orphaned French teenager, bravely decides to hit the road on her own, managing to make her way to London. In a fortunate turn of events, she finds a group of women who offer her employment, friendship and even mentoring..
But then in an unfortunate turn of events, she unwisely enters a devil's marriage bargain to secure money for a law school education. Her husband of convenience is the odious Ned Hawthorne, a wealthy, spoiled rotten heir to his philanthropist father's fortune.......and a toxic, sociopathic abuser and rapist of women.
Amelie and Ned find themselves abducted for ransom and held separately.....but by whom? And what if Ned's imperious billionaire dad doesn't feel like coughing up a ransom for both of them?
For non-spoiler purposes I can only speak vaguely about the slow, far-fetched and downright tedious second half of the book, which deals with the aftermath of the first half.
Some twists and turns appear along this slow road to the story's wrap-up, finally finishing in a long, long laborious account of the confounding motives and behaviors of all the major participants. This sort of resembles one of those Hercule Poirot accounts of the who, what and why of everything, but nothing of the revelations come across as particularly clever or believable.
A page-turning, gangbusters first half for sure, but for me, the rest of "The Prisoner" devolved into at best, a 2 star read.
This was a good book and I know so many others loved it too. This Author is a automatic buy for me. She's phenomenal!
Lots of twist and turns and then the ending. Wow!!
