Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of this book. I am a fan of B.A. Paris and was looking forward to reading this book. I was immediately drawn in at the very beginning and really enjoying the story about the kidnapping. The novel does include two timelines, past and present. As the book progressed I found it to start dragging, the pace was not cohesive throughout the book and I was starting to lose interest. Outside of the main character, Amelie, I felt the other main characters in the book did not have enough of a depth to them. The ending felt rather abrupt and anti-climactic. This wasn't one of my top Paris novels!

I've read a few B.A. Paris books over the years, and they haven't impressed me. They've felt predictable, which is 100% what I don't look for in a good suspenseful thriller.

The Prisoner absolutely impressed me! It gave me faith in B.A. Paris' future books. It was suspenseful, and you felt like you were right alongside the characters the whole time. It gave me the heebie-jeebies in the best possible way. Plus, I'm always a fan of a strong, (mostly) rational female character.

This was a story about doubling down.

This was such a well paced book, and the protagonist made choices that felt reasonable given her circumstances- a rarity in recent thrillers! I loved the first 80% of this, but unfortunately didn’t love the ending. It felt like it wrapped up very neatly, which is fine- but just isn’t my personal preference.

Thank you so much @netgalley @macmillan.audio & @stmartinspress for the ebook & audio versions!

The Prisoner was an easy to read thriller, but it’s not my favorite.

Amelia has had a rough go at life, but she believes that things will get better when she falls for Jed, a charming billionaire. However, when she wakes up a prisoner in a dark room, she questions how good she really had it before.

This was your typical thriller, plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing, but it just didn’t do it for me. I’m not sure if I didn’t like how Amelia just couldn’t catch a break or something else.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review The Prisoner. It’s a 3/5 for me.

Having read and enjoyed 4 previous BA Paris novels, I was so excited to get an advanced copy of The Prisoner. Unfortunately this book did not live up to the other books I’ve read by this author. I disliked all the characters, found the pacing very slow, and I just couldn’t wait for the boom to be over. That said, I’m still a BA Paris fan and I’ll gladly read the next book she publishes. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.

Thrilling and keeps you on the edge of your seat. In some ways the main character really bothered me in this book, hoe she just went along with things that were completely messed up and didn't fight back. However the story was interesting and I loved the little twist of how her life could have been drastically different with the news her father didn't share.

The Prisoner is a quick read with dual timelines and 2 sections of the book. The chapters are short and quickly moving, which I appreciate. The story starts out with a bang with a kidnapping happening, but after that, I felt the storyline struggle. I felt like it was trying too hard to be something it wasn't or the author was trying hard to make something flow that just wasn't there. I never connected with any of the characters and was not scared of any of them either. I felt Amelie's friends were all the same and could not keep them straight and had no idea what was happening to who and when in the story. However, it was still a quick read and I finished it quickly.

Thank you NetGalley for the e-ARC. All opinions are my own.

So so good! I did not want to put this book down. I loved that it grabbed me from the beginning. What I cannot stand is a book that makes you wait and wait and only gets good at the very end. This brought the “hook” right from the start and carried it throughout. My rankings always are based on keeping my attention but then also the thrills. I have to give this 4/5 only because I could have had more mindblowing thrills, but I don’t even care because I read this in the weekend because I needed to finish! Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this arc!

BA Paris has always been a favorite of mine and I always look forward to her books when they are announced. I liked this one btu it fell short in some places for me. It just wasn't the same as I was hoping for when I think of BA Paris. Hoping the next one is a 5 star!

B.A. Paris has been a favorite author, but this novel didn't fully meet expectations. Amelie, who has made a life for herself in London, is kidnapped, and we go back and forth in time (split between before the kidnapping and during) to uncover what is going on.

The Prisoner starts with a bang, and the pages fly by for the first half of the novel. The kidnapping scenes are compelling, and the past is dolled out just enough to keep things intriguing. However, by the second half, things get a bit paint-by-numbers. Amelie moves from being heroine to simply reacting to things and pushed along by an increasingly unbelievable plot.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.

This book quickly captured my attention and kept it. The twists and turns had my mouth hanging open. I have not read anything by this author before, but I am going to now. I received an Arc from Netgally for my honest review.

B.A. Paris is an auto-buy author for me so I was super excited to get this eARC, Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press! This was such a quick read. I've seen a lot of "meh" reviews on this book, but I liked it! This wasn't a revolutionary read by any means, but it was fast-paced with a little creepiness, and exactly what I needed at the time. Okay the ending, a little overly convenient, a little far-fetched... but honestly, wasn't that was kind of in line with the whole book (ahem the quick friendships... the literal marriage)? The whole book seemed sort of far-fetched, but I feel like that is why it worked for me- nothing had the chance to be REALLY out of place. Just sit back and enjoy it! You seriously will only need a day, it was THAT quick.

Good plot, but feel like it could have been executed better. Quick and easy read, but I wanted a lot more from the ending. This will be easily forgettable.

This was a really good book, very suspenseful and intriguing; it kept my interest, and I could hardly put it down!
While it seemed to start off a little slow, I got in to it pretty quickly and was interested to find out what was going on. I could guess some of it, but some was a surprise - a nice mix.
Amelie had a bit of bad luck early in life and found her self out it the world on her own, until she met and made some very good friends. Then the spoiled rich guy, Ned Hawthorpe, cam along and did his best to ruin it. He definitely did some damage... then they are kidnapped and she can't quite figure out what's going on: who has kidnapped them, and why? The story alternates from past to present and back, until the past catches up to the present.
I really liked this book, I would almost give it a 5, but I wish there was a little more to the ending, it seemed a little quick.
All in all, a great, quick read!

What an engrossing book. It captures the reader from cover to cover. The format of past and present works very well with this book. The characters are well thought out and very interesting. It's a page turner and as past and present meet - boom - it really keeps the story of Amelie going. She starts out as a young, orphaned girl heading to London and living on the streets. She finds friends and a job and just when her life seems perfect everything changes. She finds her strength along the way as well as her voice. Ther are twists and turns along the way which make this book a page turner and hard to put down. It has an open-ended conclusion and as Amelie says "maybe", you can draw your own conclusion. I highly recommend this book

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for letting me read this one early. The Prisoner hits the shelves on November 1.

B. A. Paris is making her way to my auto read list for sure. This one was just as captivating as her last one, The Therapist. If you're looking for a thriller to sweep you away with atmosphere you can feel and a storyline with characters that feel super real then look no further. Get your holds and preorders ready for The Prisoner.

Thanks for ARC! I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, this was underwhelming for me. The description is so good but there’s also a typo. The main character Amelie married a guy named Ned but in the description, it says “Jed”. Not a big deal, just something I noticed.

The book was an easy read with really short chapters. It was divided into two parts and showed past and present. It was interesting but nothing that made me go, wow! I can’t believe that just happened. It picked up more towards the ending, as we learned more about why everything happened but then fell flat! It’s a shame. I was hoping to really enjoy this one.

I loved Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris so I was eagerly awaiting this. It didn't quite grip me as much as I was hoping. I found the 'Hawthorpe Foundation' side of things a bit hard to relate to and it just wasn't believable that Amelie would agree to do what she did. By the last few chapters I was confused about who/ what had done what and lost interest for the ending. Disappointing.

The Prisoner 📚 by B.A. Paris

My first e-book and first #arc from #netgalley!

B.A. Paris can be hit or miss for sure, and this was a miss for me. To me it was a bad movie version of a prisoner story that went on for way too long. The only part I liked about this book was the backstory of the main character, Amelie, but other than that this book was a real struggle for me to get through. 📚

I have read quite a few of B.A. Paris' books, in the hopes of one of them replicating the suspenseful page-turning quality of "Behind Closed Doors", alas, I have not found it in this one either. "The Prisoner" is entertaining and fast paced, but also a bit predictable (for this dedicated thriller reader, at least) and I felt that the characters all veered into the cliched territory, which prevented me from really connected to or caring about them. The plot became repetitive after the halfway point, and the ending felt too abrupt. That being said, I wanted something easy and fast-paced for the weekend, and this served that purpose well enough. "Behind Closed Doors" was one of the first thrillers I read, so if I re-read it now, maybe I would not be as blown away as I was at the time. It introduced me to a genre I have come to love (whatever that says about me...) and for that, I have to be thankful to B.A. Paris, even if her newer novels haven't quite done it for me.
