BA Paris is the best psychological thriller writer. The way she's able to come up with a different expertly twisted story in every book is incomparable. Her plot twists are never expected and you can never guess the villan until she chooses to reveal it to you, and The Prisoner is no different. She creates a very likeable, believably slightly naive main character with Amelie in The Prisoner that has me empathetic and engulfed from the first to last page. I'm sad it's over and can't wait for the next one!

I am a fan of B.A. Paris. Each book is a huge thriller and I know that there will be so many twists and turns. This one threw me around. I was up and down, inside out and outside in. I had no clue what was going to happen next. Every page was a thrill for me and I love it.

Amelie was doing what she had to just to get ahead in life. She was dealt a tough hand from the start and had to take care of herself for most of her life. Jed Hawthorne seems to have the answers that she needs and is offering the help she could use, little did she know who Jed really was. I cannot imagine living as she did, doing what she had to, and not giving up on life. She never gave up but it was never easy.

The Prisoner is a phenomenal psychological thriller. The ending… I do not even know what to say other than WHAT?!?! I had no clue, I did not see it coming. I was shocked! I love it!

This book was one that really grabs your interest from the start. There was no build up to this story you were thrown right into the plot from the first sentence as you and the main character try to figure out what's happening. There was also a back and forth time jump which I usually don't like however given the structure of the story it fit perfectly and gave the reader more knowledge on why things are playing out like they were. The book starts out with our main character, Amelie, being kidnapped. Right from the first word I was hooked I couldn't wait to read more and find out why she was taken who took her who she was? There were some many questions swirling around my brain that I couldn't wait to get answers to. What I loved the most was how the reader was thrown in and was leaning who was behind things at the same time as our main character. It really felt like a mystery tring to guess who was behind it all before the big final reveal. As much as I loved the first half it was the second half that made this amazing. With so many twists and turns it really keeps you guessing. And right when you think you figured it out you are thrown off kilter and shown how wrong you were. BA Pairs has a way of writing thrillers that take the reader on a roller coaster even long after the cover has been closed. This thriller writer can do no wrong and this book proves it. Every sentence pulls you deeper into a plot that never stops spinning. I'm so glad that i got the chance to read this book because when it hits the best sellers list I want to be part of that discussion. The only down side I have to this book was that I will never be able to read it a first time again.

Wow! I just finished reading this, and my heart is pounding! This was another amazing read by B.A. Paris - I really felt all of the complex emotions that Amelie felt throughout the book. Like all of her books, there is an amazing twist that I absolutely loved!

Amelie was an incredible main character and I’m going to miss her - part of me is hoping for a sequel to this book! I found the characters to be well developed, and I enjoyed the short, easy to read chapters.

Overall, I give this a 4.75/5 stars! This is another hit from the extremely talented B.A. Paris!

The Prisoner kept the reader guessing until the very end. Amelie has had a hard childhood, and when her father passes away, she does not know who to turn to. Until she meets Carolyn who is fun and kind and introduces her to Ned. After a work event with Ned, and a swift marriage, Amelie wakes up in a dark room, having no idea where she is. Who can she blame for this predicament and how is she going to get out of there?

Thank you, NetGalley, for an advanced copy of this novel.

Amelie is a survivor who lost her parents at a young age. She dreams about going to college to become a lawyer, but college is expensive. When she marries her billionaire husband, things seem like they may fall into place for her. Then, she wakes up to discover that she and her husband have been kidnapped. Amelie is determined to find a way to stay alive.

This story was told in dual timelines, alternating between the room where Amelie is being held hostage and the events leading up to the kidnapping. The first part of this book had real potential, but I felt something was missing in the second part. I wish there was a bit more showing and less telling at the end. I liked Amelie’s backstory and enjoyed her character overall. The concept of this book was interesting, and I always love snappy chapters.

I read and listened to this book. The narrator did a good job telling the story from Amelie’s perspective. Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and St. Martin’s Press for these digital ARCs in exchange for an honest review.

I am honestly not sure what to even say about this one. I think as an author gets popular, he/she feels like the quality of his/her work gets to lessen. That's definitely been the case with B.A. Paris. This one had no story arc, just jumped right in. And zero ending. I was literally looking for more pages. I was bored and skimming. I don't know, this author just isn't for me anymore.

While I have always really liked this authors books, I found this one to be too convenient, especially during the second part. The first part was very engrossing, but the second part was too easy and everything was wrapped up with a bow. Just didn’t seem realistic to me.

I was so excited to read this book. I’ve never read from BA Paris before but I do own Behind Closed Doors and heard amazing things about it. I thought the synopsis of The Prisoner sounded amazing, and couldn’t wait to pick it up. Unfortunately the concept of this book was its only redeeming quality.

I was unable to connect to the characters, the plot was slow moving, while there was little to no atmosphere. I did not like the writing style, but did appreciate the short chapters. There was no climax, nothing. Only a long drawn out info dump explanation at the end. Probably the longest explanatory ending I’ve ever read. Long and boring.

This book was a major disappointment.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Prisoner follows the story of Amelie, who one night is awakened to find she's being kidnapped along with her husband, Ned. She is put into a pitch black room with only a mattress on the floor - and yet she feels safer in this makeshift cell than she had felt at home with her husband. This story is told through dual timelines, alternating between the present in the room and the past events leading up to Amelie's abduction.

This was a binge-able thriller, and I loved the short chapters. I didn't feel like it measured up to some of Paris' other work (Behind Closed Doors, for example). I liked the concept - it was so interesting and unique. But there was a ton of time (multiple chapters) describing the room itself. I also thought that the information given to Amelie at the end (summarizing to avoid spoilers!) was info-overload. There was a lot of telling and not showing - I think it would have been more interesting if the info was revealed in a more organic way throughout the book.

All in all I did enjoy reading it and will continue to read B.A. Paris' books!

I am rounding up from 2.5 to 3 stars because I typically love the authors work but this one was a miss for me. It wasn’t overall awful but it is probably my least favorite or at least in the bottom two.
The story is about a woman who gets kidnapped and held in a dark room. And while she is being held in the dark room, we are given many, many, many, details about said dark room. To the point where you’re like ugh seriously? How much details can there be about a dark room? But somehow there’s more. I get that if she is in a dark room there’s not much action taking place so you’re left creating an atmosphere but wholly moly that was a bit much. Then there were the chapters that explain how she found herself in the situation that led to her being kidnapped and in the dark room-she went from being broke and feeling hopeless to being befriended by some rich women and working as an assistant to one of them, and that brought her into a whole new world and a whole new set of people and problems.
The plot was outlandish and beyond belief and when the ultimate reasoning behind why she is there is revealed I was left going “no. That can’t be it. “
The narrator did a fairly good job of keeping the voices identifiable and not cartoonish.
This may be a winner for some, but sadly not for me. But that won’t stop me from reading the next book she comes out with!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. A good story told in dual time lines- past and present. Amelie is getting her life together when she is offered an amazing deal. Once she accepts everything she knows is turned upside down!!!
Quick read and good story!!

Oh, BA Paris! You’ve done it again. This book had me from page one, as most of the author’s stories do. But there is something special about this read.

Maybe it’s the tight, masterful plot. Characters that hold your attention and keep you connected. Writing that never fails. A plot twist that will leave you gobsmacked!

Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the early read. What a treat!

Paris has knocked out some great thrillers in the past but this one didn’t live up to her previous work. The premise was interesting enough: a high profile businessman and his new wife are kidnapped in the middle of the night and held separately in dark confined spaces. The thriller flips between the past and present, explaining along the way the events that led up to the fateful kidnapping. To put it bluntly, this just did not come together at all - the characters were so one note (the bad guy was too “bad,” the naive woman too naive, the single minded philanthropist too single minded, etc.), the grand scheme plan filled with way too many holes, the coincidences out of left field, and the twist - wait, was there a twist/surprise? Not really. I read quickly because with a talented author like Paris I was sure there had to be a deeper, more complicated, nuanced explanation for everything but I was sadly disappointed. I will continue to read her thrillers because I think she is an interesting storyteller but this one just fell flat for me.

Amelie is being held prisoner. She knows its her husband fault but she is trying to figure out who is holding her captive. She realized shortly after marrying her husband for a "business transaction" that is was a bad idea. He tricked her and now she is paying the price along with some of her dear friends.

This book was just OK for me. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. The writing was good, I just felt like the plot fell short. The whole book was spanned over a short time period so I feel like there was a lot of details and some seemed unnecessary I suppose. The ending was too sudden for me too. It left me thinking, ok now what happens?? That can be a good thing though and it has kept me thinking even after I finished the book.

This is my first B.A. Paris novel and let me say I LOVE the writing style! This slow burn hooked me from the beginning. We follow Amelie becoming an orphan, ending up in a marriage of convenience, a kidnapping, waking up in a completely dark room and no idea why or how she got there...I wanted to know the who, how, and why! Definitely will be reading more from this author!

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of The Prisoner. Years ago I won a giveaway of Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris and I fell in love with her writing style. I never miss a book from her. The Prisoner is a very exciting read.

Coming in at just under 300 pages, THE PRISONER was a quick read with a past/present timeline ultimately converging to give the full picture on the kidnapping that took place. B.A. Paris is a hit or miss author for me (check out BEHIND CLOSED DOORS if you haven’t already 🙌🏻) so I went in with high hopes but was left feeling meh.

This book was entirely unbelievable even for thriller standards and had me rolling my eyes on several occasions. It started off strong, the middle was hard to keep track of due to a deception storyline, & the ending was lackluster. IMO, this is one you can probably skip 🤷🏼‍♀️

Amelia’s father passes away and she is an orphan with no other family. She is a survivor and decides to move from Paris to London. She gets a job at prestigious magazine and is saving money to attend law school. Her billionaire boss, Nat, makes her an offer that would solve her money problems. She is to become his wife in a marriage of convenience for one month, then she would get a divorce. She accepts his offer and her nightmare begins. She becomes his prisoner and they both become prisoners when they are kidnapped. This is a fast read and a very twisted and complimented story.

I have loved previous books by this author. This one though fell a little flat. The first part of this book was good with short chapters that alternated between the past and present timelines. Amelia is getting through her imprisonment day by day. The second part of this book was set after the kidnapping, with Amelie trying to piece together what had happened and why, and who was involved. The pacing was different in the second half and the storyline was all in the present. I didn’t love the ending either, but I did feel like Amelie was able to get some closure.
