I appreciate NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Prisoner for an honest review. I couldn't put it down. Amelie finds herself alone when her father dies. Having no where to go and no one to turn to, she leaves her hometown and goes to London where she basically ends up homeless. Here she meets Catherine and enters an entire new world with friends and a nice place to live. Through an unexpected series of events she ends up married to a very rich, very handsome man. This is where things begin to go wrong. Things aren't what they seem and Amelie and her new husband are kidnapped. I had to keep reading to find out what happens to Amelie - does she escape and live happily ever after? The end will keep you guessing. It was a fun read.
A young woman, left alone after her father dies starts making a good life for herself in London. She gets tricked into a marriage with a wealthy man and then gets kidnapped because of him. As a prisoner in a dark room alone, she tries to figure out an escape plan and we also learn of how she came to be in this position. Is being their prisoner worse than the prison of her marriage. And who is behind all this? Interesting, quick read. A heroine worth rooting for
I struggled to engage in the beginning because of where the story started, but was quickly sucked in within a few chapters. Another book as only BA Paris can write!
B.A. Paris knows how to write a compelling thriller! This one was fast pace and kept me guessing until the end! I highly recommend this author.
Thank you to net galley for giving me an ARC for my honest review.
Oh man, this book did not hit me well at all. I found the pacing to be off, the ending abrupt, the characters unlikable and not a bit compelling. I've liked BA Paris a lot in the past but this one missed the mark for me.
I’ve always enjoyed B.A. Paris books and was excited to read an advanced copy of The Prisoner (thanks to NetGally). The suspense had me hooked from the start. Although her plots are usually a bit “out there,” the The Prisoner felt a lot more convoluted and forced. Also, the ending felt abrupt and unfinished. I don’t think I would recommend this to friends, but I certainly won’t give up on B.A. Paris!
I was so excited to received B.A. Paris' newest book, The Prisoner, to review! It was everything I want in a thriller/suspense novel. I love how you have no idea what is happening in the first half of the book and then when you think you might have some sort of idea, Paris throws in another twist! I basically finished this book in one day and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review. The Prisoner comes out November 1, 2022.
I have always been a fan of B A Paris, I have read all of her books and think there was one I didn't like that well. The Prisoner was very well written full of turns and twist, When I first started reding this book , it reminded me of her first book Behind Closed Doors, I truely enjoyed this book and look forward to reading many more,
Big fan of author B.A. Paris. Jumped at the opportunity to read and advanced copy.
Amelia is an orphaned homeless teenager living in London. She has faced adversity and is a strong person, but a bit naïve.
Amelia meets Carolyn and is given the opportunity to live with her and in return she is to cook and clean. She was thrilled to be given the job and her goal is save enough money to go to college.
Shortly after, she marries a billionaire and in return she is to be given $100,000 to attend college. But, she and her new husband are kidnapped.
Amelia is captured and they put her in a totally dark room alone.
I found the first part of the story to be a bit slow. The second half the plot builds and the mystery is intense. I found I could not read fast enough to find out who and why was she kidnapped.
The ending was a let down and lacked substance and suspense.
B.A. Paris is a talented mystery/suspense author. And I will look forward to her future books.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and give an honest review.
I am the queen of hitting the mid book slump, and this format totally ereased the midbook slump for me. It was almost like reading two seperate books and I loved it. The before with the kidnapping and the after with the why. However, even without the mid book slump, it still felt like something was missing from the book. Not my favorite by B.A. Paris, but still a fun little weekeend thriller!
I LOVED this one and devoured it in one sitting!!! BA paris is a favourite of mine and she didn’t disappoint with this one! It has a way of grabbing you right from the beginning and you want to know more about the FMC right away and her story! It is told in her POV and goes back from the now of her being kidnapped to the story of how she got kidnapped! And it was so good! I loved her back story and the friendships she had developed! I don’t want to spoil this because it’s better if you don’t know to many of the details! But this thriller had fast pace plot line, so many moments that had me shocked and surprised! If you like dark kidnapping stories and domestic drama set in a rainy London setting this is the book for you! Thank you for the publisher!
I’ve never read a book quite like this. Beginning, I wasn’t sure this was a book I would like or even finish. However, my interest grew and I really liked Amelie and felt a connection to her. She is very young so her naivety can be forgiven. She lost her mother at a very young age and I think her father kept her sheltered so when he passed away in her late teens, she assumed things that weren’t true and ran away to London from France to begin a new life. Luckily she was befriended by Carolyn who gave her shelter and a job, also introducing her to two more amazing women. Her innocence let’s her fall for a life changing situation marrying Ned, for a marriage of convenience to end after 31 days with a promise of enough money to pursue her education. Unfortunately Ned is a real cad and the short relationship eventually leads to multiple murders and her and Ned’s kidnapping. The kidnappers separate them from the beginning and treat her fairly good except for keeping her literally in the dark and feed her a minimal diet and never speak to her. Ned doesn’t care anything about her and she learns how far he will go to get rid of her when she can hear him whining and telling the kidnappers to kill her. The story as written is easily figured out as to who the kidnappers are, but for Amelie , she is on the right track after her release but not completely correct. Slow in parts, and the author leave the reader frustrated, relieved, but not necessarily satisfied.
OMG. Once again, B.A. Paris knocks it out of the ballpark! I seriously read her books so fast because they are that addicting. Sometimes you need to take a breather though because of how intense they are and this one was definitely intense. Outstanding!! Her writing style is fantastic and truly it is hard to put down her books.
Chilling. Made my heart pound the entire time I was along for the abduction of Amelie and her bizarre relationship with Ned Hawthorpe. Fans of BA Paris should start to get excited!
Amelie is an orphan after losing her father and is forced to fend for herself. She grows up to hav me a decent but fairly uneventful life. That is until she meets Jed Hawthorne, a very wealthy man, who appears to be enamoured by Amelie. Jed suggests they get married and they quickly do. When Jed and Amelie are kidnapped and.a substantial ransom demand is made to Jeds father it’s anyone’s guess if they will survive.
This is my third book by this author and I thought this one was amazing. The premise was very unique and it had some unexpected twists and turns that keep me reading. The author did a good job of developing the characters and building the story in a detailed way. I would say for me some of the ending got a bit confusing but was still satisfied how it ended. I will certainly be recommending this one to all my family and friends and anyone else who enjoys psychological thrillers.
3/5 stars. It was certainly an interesting and somewhat complex plot, but this is definitely not my favorite read from the author. I couldn’t get invested or attached to any of the characters, and had a hard time keeping track of everything going on in the book. I almost DNF’d this one, was just a miss for me.
Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and B.A Paris for the advanced copy in exchange for review.
B.A. Paris has been an auto buy author for me since the beginning. Behind Closed Doors is a must recommend and one of my top favorite thrillers of all time, so naturally when I saw The Prisoner" available for review I had to try, and I am so thankful!
B.A. Paris has a unique ability of weaving an intricate web so detailed and twisted that I am always left flipping pages late into the night. The Prisoner is no exception. Dark, scandalous, and devious.... The Prisoner is told through alternate timelines, as you follow the past and present in short, well written chapters. Starting with a kidnapping, Amelie and her husband are separated, and she is left in a dark room with no lights, windows, and a lone mattress on a floor. This is paradise compared to her hell with her husband. Past and Present stories are woven together perfectly, leaving questions answered and I was completely satisfied with the plot twist. All the puzzle pieces were placed together beautifully. I would have loved to have known a little more about Ned's background (like why he was the way he was) and would have liked the ending to be a little bit more drawn together, it leaves it pretty open for the reader to make a decision.
A unique, well-written, dark story gets 4 stars from me, and will be a must buy to add to my library!
Once again, thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press!
3.5 stars!
Amelie wakes up after being abducted to a pitch black room. As she struggles to adjust to her new reality, she realises how grateful she is to be away from her new husband. As someone who has previously survived becoming an orphan in poverty, she’s not ready to give up her life that easily.
The beginning had me hooked! The premise was so interesting to me and I loved the tension building in the first half as the past and present timelines started to weave together. However, by the end I was just frustrated with Amelie’s naivety and how predictable the story was. My rating is pretty much based on the first half.
This book hits some of my favs - multiple timelines, creepy suspense, and domestic thrills. Not much more to say but to check it out... and make sure you know what's in your prenup!
ARC provided from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I love every one of this author's book and this one was no exception. I was hooked from the beginning. The ending felt a little rushed but overall the book was a fun ride!
