Paris hits another home run. This book had me on the edge of my my seat until the end. Fast reading great story line. Don’t let this one get away!
Wow this book was amazing! This is one of those books that once you start reading you can't put down. I read the whole thing in one day. The first chapter grabs you and does not let you go.
There were so many beautifully done twists and turns that just hooked me. There was a great level of suspense building throughout the book that helped it to be a fast paced thriller.
The only thing that I did not like was the last 25% of the book. It did not have as much suspense and believability as the rest of the book, and I was left wondering where the author was going with the rest of the story.
This was the first book that I read from this author, and I can not wait to read more from them.
2.5 Stars
The opening chapters started off with a BANG!!!
I had really high hopes for this one, but it's slow and predictable. It's about 300 pages and felt like a slowburn.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, Electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review

The Prisoner captured my attention from the first chapter. There were many twists and turns that kept me guessing and intrigued. It was a fast paced book, but the ending was very drawn out and the whole thing was a bit far fetched. Overall, it was still an enjoyable read. Thank you netgalley for the arc.
I loved this one by B.A. Paris. It kept me guessing and it wasn't brutal or anything that I wouldn't want to be reading. I really liked it! I especially liked the author's cleverness in helping the protagonist because there wasn't anything she didn't think about!
The Prisoner by B.A. Paris will capture your attention on the first page and you won't want to stop reading until the story is over. So many twists and turns that make you wonder what will happen next. I loved Amelie the main character and her strength and will to survive. The Prisoner is a quick read that you won't want to put down.
On your mark, get set, go! And we're off. The Prisoner takes off with the speed and agility of a racer. It aims to win. I was hooked with the first chapter.
After the death of her father, Amelie has to begin a new life all on her own. She quickly makes a new friend and with her help is able to get on her feet. Her new network of friends puts her in a position to make some high profile acquaintances. One of these is Ned Hawthorne, whom she eventually marries. So how is it that she is now locked in a dark room as a prisoner with no understanding as to why?
The Prisoner is told in two parts, with short chapters and is a dual timeline read. I was thoroughly invested in this story due to it's fast paced, intense, as well as atmospheric nature. It met the criteria of being a true psychological thriller. It came with grit and suspense. It is unfortunate that this only true for the first 61%, thereafter this story ran out of adrenaline. I saw this story progressing so differently than it played out. There were so many missed opportunities in the latter 39% and one big one in the former. We had such a build up but the author did not follow through. That was disappointing.
Although I cannot rate this book higher than 3 stars, I am just not ready to give up on B. A. Paris yet. I'd like to think that I am not a glutton for punishment. I still look forward to her next offering.
Many thanks to NetGalley and to St. Martin's Press for their kindness in providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
B.A. Paris is amazing at writing thrillers. They keep you on the edge of your seat, and this one is no exception. The character growth and suspense was amazing! As the novel flashes from present to past, I felt like Amelie and Ned were east to follow, and always kept me wondering what was next. Highly recommend.
The Prisoner was a very quick, very intriguing story about a girl who just never could seem to get the world to tilt her way.
I admit, the main character wasn’t my favorite. I mean her life just literally sucked. She could not catch a break and when you finally think she’ll turn things around, life explodes and she’s kidnapped along with her pathetic husband and held prisoner for a time. The premise of this book was super intriguing and I’ll admit I was invested; however at the end I’m left……bothered. I literally hate when book characters come out of nowhere and are the major player in the plot. I understand you don’t want to give the ending away but can we get a little background on these people before we are just supposed to assume they are good people doing a bad thing for all the right reasons??? I don’t know, it just felt a little forced.
Overall, I did actually like the book. Could it have been better, yes! Would I discourage someone from reading it, nope!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.
I previously read and enjoyed Behind Close Doors but this one didn’t quite work for me. While I loved the short chapters, dual timeline and intriguing first half, the ending was too convoluted and underwhelming. Also who knew so much math would be involved?! The accountant in me is not complaining, though! 😂😂 While this one didn’t quite meet my expectations, I’m still interested in reading Paris’ backlist.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
B.A Paris has done it again!
The book starts at a fast pace. Amelie and her husband are kidnapped near the beginning, and then the reader slowly learns more about the couple and who has imprisoned then and why through chapters that vacillate between past and present and switch to different characters’ POV. The structure is very effective and unfolds the plot at a fast enough pace to keep you engaged and avoid any lulls, but slowly enough to allow for character development and to give you all of the pieces of the puzzle by the end, avoiding plot holes or weakly written characters. A unique and engrossing story. Highly recommend!!!
Amelie has always been a survivor. She needs that character trait when her marriage of convenience turns dark, and worse, when she gets kidnapped. This fast paced thriller will keep you guessing until the end.
Amelie and her billionaire husband Ned Hawthorne are kidnaped and being held for ransom. She is placed alone in a pitch black room where she begins to plot her escape from her captors. After all this is not the worst thing that has happened to her and she has always been a survivor. Even if she doesn't escape this room she still feels safer than she ever did with her husband Ned.
The Prisoner is a fast-paced mystery/thriller that follows a young woman, Amelie, who has just been kidnapped. The story transitions between the present and the past as she recalls her life choices that led to this moment. The reader quickly learns that Amelie has not had the easiest life and because of her previous experiences she has become a survivor, one who is not quite ready just to give up. There are definitely some mixed reviews on this novel and although B.A. Paris can be hit or miss for me; I really enjoyed this one. There may not be too many shocking revelations that you can't figure out fairly quickly but its a quick read with good pacing that kept me engaged and entertained throughout. This is the perfect weekend thriller where you don't have to overthink every single chapter and can just get comfy and enjoy the story.
Amelie has always survived what’s been thrown at her, orphaned at a young age, she leaves her home in Paris to find a job in London, her ultimate goal is to go to law school. As she makes her life in London, she meets Jed Hawthorne a popular handsome billionaire. They marry in Vegas, not for love but for a mutual understanding of helping each other. Jed however isn’t so well liked and one night both Amelie and Jed are taken from their home. Amelie is pushed into a pitch black room, she’s all alone and she has no idea what’s going on. She starts to question in her mind what is happening, she tries to piece it all together but nothing makes sense. Who is holding her and Jed prisoner? Is she going to get out alive? Thank you Netgalley and St.Martin’s Publishing Group for a chance to listen to the audiobook for an honest review. I gave this book 4stars.
B.A Paris does it again with another incredible book. Twists and turns that you don’t see coming all come together at the end. A must read
What a crazy ride, and I wouldn't expect anything less from this author.
Lots of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting.
What I like about her books is the endings aren't necessarily wrapped up neatly with a bow.
This book in particular, I found myself saying "That's it?" because I wanted more.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who like a good psychological thriller.
I loved B.A Paris’s behind closed doors and was excited to read her newest book. I definitely enjoyed it but not as much as behind closed doors. I found the first half a little slow which I would have never guessed with such a high stake situation. The second half really picked up though and I enjoyed figuring out everything at the same time at Amelie. Amelie was a really great character and I really was able to relate to her despite not loving all of her choices. Overall would recommend for someone in the mood for a twisty thriller read.
Dialog was blocky and awkward at the beginning. I wasn’t sure I’d stay with the book, but the past/present set up kept me turning the pages. I thought the ending would be more fleshed out, but it laid it all out there in a matter of pages. I still have some questions.
I received a prepub copy in exchange for my honest review.
Wow!! I read this book in less than 24 hours. Right from the very start It will reel you in. I found myself not trusting a soul and couldn’t get to the next page fast enough to see how it was going to turn out. Awesome book.
This book was awesome! Love BA Paris. This book had a good plot and lots at action. Great mystery book with answers at the end so the reader feels fulfilled.
