After the death of her father, Amelie's life hits very rock bottom. Within a few years, she manages to improve her lifestyle and marry one of the wealthiest bachelors in London. And now, seating on a mattress in a pitch-dark room, she looks back at the last two weeks of her life determined to break free of her captivity and make her husband pay for his wrongdoings.

Huge fan of B.A.Paris but this book just didn't trigger the excitement in me as her previous novels did. The plot was good, but it was incredibly easy to predict the ending. The split dual timeline revealed all the exciting twists very early in the book. There were a few thrilling moments here and there, but I felt disappointed by the novel at the end. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the author's new novels, and in a meantime, I will look into her oldies.

Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a free and advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

B.A. Paris has done it again! I have read all of their books and she is an amazing writer. This book had me at the edge of my seat the entire time! The way she vividly describes her characters and the events happening, makes it feel like you're in the book and/or watching it like a movie. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good thriller written with a unique perspective.

At first, it was so good. Definitely had "Behind Closed Doors" vibes with the abusive, horrible husband. Learning how they ended up getting married and being held captive by going between past and present kept my interest. But then the past part ended and there was still so much left in the book... It seemed to go on FOREVER. I feel like it could have been made shorter and still had everything explained. And I *knew* Hunter had to be her captor! It was also super sad, since basically everyone she loved died. Then it gets a little Stockholm syndrome-y at the end...

This was exactly what I had hoped for from B.A Paris! A fast paced psychological thriller that kept me guessing until the last page. I loved Amelie and felt a need to know what she would do next. I also liked the short chapters that keep you wanting more.

Thank you NetGalley and publishers for this ARC digital copy.

This one started off fast paced and interesting but then it crashed and burned. I never felt all that connected to/concerned about the main character and all of the events that happened concerning Ned were so insane and it felt like “shocking moments” were sprinkled in just to keep the story going. There also wasn’t much opportunity to read between the lines either... sadly disappointed with this one.

I first discovered B.A. Paris with her shocking thriller Behind Closed Doors and I’ve now read all of her books. No two novels are alike, but The Prisoner is the most reminiscent of the nail-biting suspense that gripped me in Behind Closed Doors.

The Prisoner opens with Amelie imprisoned in a dark room by unknown captors. As the novel progresses we learn more about Amelie’s tragic past and see her begin to hit her stride after meeting Carolyn, a wealthy business woman who invites Amelie to be her live in household help. The two become friends and through Carolyn, Amelie meets billionaire Ned Hawthorpe, whom she marries on a whirlwind Vegas trip. The chapters alternate between the recent past and the present ultimately coming together as all is revealed. This is a solid thriller that kept me engaged throughout. My only sticking point is how the novel wraps up. It concludes with a very long information dump that I think could have been conveyed in a different way.

What I liked:
•The pacing
•Short chapters
•Suspenseful and edge of your seat developments
•Amelie is a character you’ll want to root for.

Thriller lovers will definitely want to check this one out. Look for The Prisoner from your favorite bookseller on November 1, 2022. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for an ARC via NetGalley!

Amelie has had such a hard life. She lost her mom and brother at a young age and now at the age of 17, her father, her only family in the world is dying of cancer. She is left homeless when she makes her way to London. A chance encounter leaves her with a new friend Carolyn and things quickly gets better. Upon meeting billionaire Ned, she is swept up into a quickie marriage, but things immediately take a turn for the worse.
Amelie awakens to find herself locked in a dark room and Ned is in the other. Who kidnapped them and what do they want? Told between Then and Now timelines, this is a fast-paced thriller with lots of action and moments that will make you gasp. I devoured this book as fast as I could. This was a 5* read! Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the EArc and the chance to review it!

I’ve been a fan of B.A.’s since I read book behind closed doors. I always look forward to her work and this time is no different. The Prisoner started off with a bang and went from there. For me this wasn’t exactly my favorite book of hers but I love the complexity of it that kept me on the edge of my seat.

The Prisoner is a slow burn mystery behind the kidnapping of Ned Hawthtope and Amelie. The timeline switches between past and present and Part One- The Kidnap and Part Two- The Reckoning. The first part of the book was fast paced you had to hold on because there’s a lot going on. Why were Ned and Amelie kidnapped? Who’s was behind it? I loved the short chapters. That kept me invested and wanting to continue reading. I was rooting for Amelie the entire book. I liked her and my heart broke for her as well. She’s has had a very difficult life and she’s still so very young. I was so glad when Carolyn came into Amelie’s life. But things took a sinister turn when she started working at Exclusives. I loathed Nate. What a horrible human being. There was not one good redeeming quality about this sick twisted individual. I lost all respect and credibility for the kidnappers also. The second part of the book was basically a retelling about what happened and why the kidnapping happened. Instead of letting the reader figure it out for themselves. Some parts were confusing and there was still unanswered questions in the end.

I am usually a fan of B.A. Paris books but this one did not do it for me. The Prisoner is another thriller in which girl meets rich guy and somehow something goes wrong. In this case, Amelie meets Jed Hawthrone and marries him soon after. The story starts off with Amelie and Jed captured and held ransom. The story alternates between present and past Amelie.

The plot line is kind of dull and did not keep me on my toes wanting to know who is behind the kidnapping because you would never guess.

Thank you to Netgalley, author B.A. Paris, and the publisher St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC, in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

First off, thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for approving me an advanced copy of The Prisoner!

B.A. Paris has been my all time favorite author for a while. Her first few books just reeled me in and I was absolutely crazy about them! Behind Closed Doors, Bring Me Back and The Break Down were amazing. However I kind of feel like after that her books have gone downhill a bit. The Dilemma is where I started going down from a 5 star too a 3/4 and so forth.

The Prisoner wasn’t BAD, but it wasn’t as good as her first 3 books. It almost feels like there isn’t enough thought put into the scenarios as her previous writings.. it almost feels rushed? There is not as many true unexpected twists and turns, which is one of the best attributes to a mystery/thriller (and to her previous books!). In other words - it’s a bit more predictable. Character development is so-so.

I do see some others commenting on the past/presents chapter structure.. I think several of her other books do this and I personally don’t mind it here. I think it gets a bit confusing at the beginning but hthat changes once you get going.

All in all the book was decent enough and still worth reading! . Nonetheless I am a loyal reader and so I will continue to read Paris’ books.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was very excited to receive this book from NetGalley as I have read several books by this author. The first half of the book held my interest, but then the second half of the book unfortunately did not.. It was a quick read due to the short chapters and the back and forth from the present to past was easy to follow, but I found the plot very convoluted. I really enjoyed other books by this author - Behind Closed Doors; The Breakdown and Bring Me Back. These were all books I would certainly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and B.A. Paris for the advanced copy of The Prisoner in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed the short chapters and in the beginning I was hooked as we went back and forth from past to present to figure out why Amelie was taken.

Unfortunately I found the story to be really disjointed, with a main character who is so naive it suspended reality too much for me. This one just goes in the category of "Not For Me," but I appear to be in the minority on that one!

The Prisoner will be on US bookshelves November 1.

This was not amazing. I haven't been able to get the same spark from her earlier books. I would have DNF but wanted to see this one through. Wouldn't recommend

B.A. Paris is one of my fave authors so i was super excited to read this one.

Not always a fan of back and forth between past and present but it worked in this case.

At no point did i feel like i knew where the story was going which i liked, i wanted more from the ending though as it did lose me a bit in part 2.

Amelie was a great character and overall i really enjoyed this read!!

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book

I finished this book in record time! I really didn’t know what it was about going in and that’s how I like it! I loved the alternating Past and Present chapters and how the story unfolds a bit at a time. I love Amelie and I felt so protective of her! I think this is my favorite B.A. Paris book to date! The whole book just had me turning pages as fast as I could and there was never a dull moment!

When Amelie wakes up in a room of pitch black and discovers she has been kidnapped her first thought is that her husband is responsible. As she comes to, she remembers the events of the night before and how she expected this.

This is when I knew the book was going to be great. Who expects their husband to kidnap them, lock them in a room of darkness with only a mattress and serve them bland food at mealtimes?

As a child Amelie grows up in France, losing her mom at a young age and her father while she is in high school. Without any other family she flees to London, not wanting to get put into a home by child protective services. She works waitress jobs, sleeps in hostels, and finally befriends a wealthy London woman, Carolyn, who hires her as a live-in housekeeper/cook and treats her more like a little sister than like a servant. Amelie quickly bonds to Carolyn and her friend group and things seem to be heading in the right direction for her- finally. She even marries one of the richest men in London.

Without giving too much away, I read The Prisoner in a day. It was a thriller I couldn’t put down, partly because I really liked the characters and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next, and also because I knew I wasn’t sleeping if it wasn’t finished.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read this book ahead of its release! This one is out November 1st!

What did I just read? This reminded me some of
Behind Closed Doors, which I loved and couldn't put
down, but also terrified me. This was a thriller that had
me hooked from page 1. I didn't want to stop reading
just because I needed to know what happened and
how everything connected. Spoiler warning: at the
ending, all I could think was, "that's it?!" And then it was
over. I liked the build up at the end, but how it just
abruptly ended, disappointed me. I needed more
closure than that.

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris will compel you to keep turning pages to find out what happens next. The story starts with a kidnapping and questions quickly start adding up. The dual timelines slowly merge together and bit by bit the answers we need are revealed. While the storyline is all action and no character growth, this tale is intriguing and captivating.

Readers in the mood for a quick, suspenseful read will enjoy The Prisoner. There is a reason why B.A. Paris is one of my favourite authors, and The Prisoner does not disappoint.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review -
Amelie marries Ned, a billionaire but he isn’t who he seems and when she witness this she is scared and wants to leave.
And then she wakes up in. Dark room, not knowing where she is, who took her, and why. How long has she been her. Can she escape?
