This book begins with rapid, short chapters revealing that Amelie has been kidnapped and is being held in a completely dark room. The chapters go back and forth between the current time and the direct past events that led to the kidnapping situation. The format of the writing makes the pace of the story very fast. The format of the writing does change about 2/3 of the way through, and while drastic, it allows the story to feel a little more developed and rounded-out. Good page-turner with intrigue.
I love a B.A Paris novel. She became one of my go-tos before I got back into reading. Her book, “Bring Me Back” is still to this day one of my absolute favorites that made my head spin in ways it hadn’t before.
The Prisoner is no different. With the dueling timelines, piecing together the puzzle of how Amelie got herself into this mess and the events that brought her there kept you on your toes the whole time.
I enjoyed how this book wrapped up and allowed Amelie to get closure.
The short chapters, and quick paced made for this to be a very quick read once I really sat down with it.
B.A Paris did it again with this one. Can’t wait to read more of her.
Thank you netgalley and St. Martin Press for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!
I have long been a fan of this author so was excited to read this new book. While I enjoyed the premise, and found the first half of the book very twisty, the second half was less enjoyable. Some of the plot at the end felt like a rush to tie things together.
Nonetheless, a great read for fans of the author abs those who enjoy domestic thrillers.
I liked this one! There was a lot of suspense with the kidnapping but the end was a little too much (don’t want to spoil)! A quick read for the suspense book lover.
I loved the flow of this, the present and past viewpoints, and how many times I was like WAIT WHAAAAT!!! This was great, thanks So much!
“The Prisoner” is a great psychological thriller. The story starts off with the kidnapping of Amelie and Ned Hawthorpe. The kidnappers plan to ransom Ned, expecting his wealthy father to pay a tidy sum for the safe release of Ned and Amelie. However, Amelie knows that is unlikely, as his father cares nothing about her and has a contentious relationship with Ned, whose career choice and lifestyle he does not approve of. Also, the marriage of Amelie and Ned is a business relationship, and Ned views her as expendable.
The kidnapper who primarily interacts with Amelie is silent, never speaking and barely acknowledging her. She is locked in a small dark room with a mattress and an attached bathroom, only leaving to be led downstairs to film video pleas to Ned’s father as needed.
The story alternates between her time imprisoned and the events leading up to the kidnapping. The reader will learn that Ned is a rather despicable individual. The motive behind the kidnapping and the actions of the kidnappers are more complex than first appears. Assumptions about what various characters know and why they behaved the way they did greatly influence how events turn out, making some aspects of the psychological torture worse than necessary. The story has a number of very good twists, some of which are very unexpected.
I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I wanted to love this book. BA Paris is a great author with many books that I have enjoyed. However this was not it. It started off great and I was hooked! But it just didn’t do it for me.
This was a pretty quick and fast paced read for me.
I got pretty invested in finding out if what I thought was going to happen did and although I guessed the big plot twist, there were a few other moments that surprised me.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martins Press for this ARC eBook in exchange for my honest review.
I received an eARC copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
Let me start off by saying I almost) always love any book by B.A. Paris! So when I saw this on NetGalley, I requested it immediately. This book started out super strong for me!! Not very far into it and I was invested. However, the “part 2” of the book is where things started to go downhill. And the ending was so abrupt! I feel like they spent a lot of time “explaining” the reasoning for her being held prisoner and then we were still left with some questions.
Similar to my last review- not my favorite and not my least favorite from this author. I think an epilogue could’ve made this book feel more wrapped up!
I have yet to be disappointed by a book by B.A. Paris. The Prisoner does not fail either. I was immediately drawn in by the first chapter. By the 10th chapter I couldn’t put it down.
Amalie is offered a once in a lifetime chance. Marry a rich, trust fund playboy for one months time, for his own convenience sake and get paid 100 thousand pounds. Enough to pay for her college that she’s been feverishly saving for. What harm would it cause? In 30 days she’s free to go back to her own life. But is she? There may be a bit more on the line.
After the death of her father, young Amelie becomes homeless. She is rescued off the streets by a very kind woman named Carolyn, who offers her a job and friendship. Through Carolyn and her friends, Amelie’s path crosses with Ned, a socialite billionaire. Amelie and Ned rush into a marriage, which is strained and unhappy, leaving the reader with many questions. Not long into the marriage, they’re both kidnapped. Even though Amelie is locked in a dark room, she finds herself feeling safer with her mysterious captors than she did with her own husband.
I had so much fun reading this book! The short chapters and quick pace kept my attention the entire time. Amelie’s character development was very well thought out, starting as a young and naive girl, and becoming a bold and strong woman.
Huge thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for this ARC!
The first half of this book was unputdownable, the second half, not so much... although it was still intriguing in a "I have to know how it ends" type of way. I love B.A.'s books and I will ALWAYS read them, and I wasn't disappointed with this one. I loved the pacing, where the first part of the book is where you can't leave it and the second part lets you sit in it. I was a happy girl, hugging my Kindle after I was done.
Sadly, I did not like this book. I was very disappointed with the total lack of character development, the plot holes, and the predictability. POSSIBLE SPOILERS
It was so unlikely that Amelie would have become chummy with the rich, sophisticated women. I understand that Amelie and Ned marrying was necessary to advance what plot there was, but their marriage didn't make any sense. Nor did the fact that Amelie's grandfather was awarded money after his death, other than to allow Amelie to not be homeless after she renounced the money. The whole doubling thing, sigh. B.A. Paris has done much better than this.
1.5 stars - it was a quick read.
Mixed reviews made me wonder if this ARC would prove to be a mistake. I was hooked at the start however, and I had a hard time putting the book down. I realized right away this would be a storyline that makes you wait until the end to explain the events of the first half. That may be why some reviews complain that there's a bit of a slow down in the last half. That isn't a problem for me as a reader as long as it's done well. B.A. Paris did it justice.
Even the dual timeline is easy to follow. The book ends on a bit of an anticlimactic cliff hanger, but that's where your imagination can come up with what you think should happen next. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for and advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Fast read - mostly because I struggled to put it down. I was hooked from the beginning with each reveal being perfectly timed and rewarding. Full of twists, turns, clear motivations and captivating characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Prisoner is a quick read & I enjoyed it.. It has short chapters and the beginning is very captivating.. I personally prefer shorter chapters, especially in a book that switches timelines.. The end of the story felt a bit rushed and ended up falling flat.. However, the story of Amelie is entertaining & suspenseful.. 3.5 stars
Synopsis- Amelie has always been a survivor, from losing her parents as a child in Paris to making it on her own in London. As she builds a life for herself, she is swept up into a glamorous lifestyle where she married the handsome billionaire Ned Hawthorne.
But then, Amelie wakes up in a pitch-black room, not knowing where she is. Why has she been taken? Who are her mysterious captors? And why does she soon feel safer here, imprisoned, than she had begun to feel with her husband Ned?
Amelie and her husband Jed haven't been married for very long and already, Amelie realizes that she made a mistake in marrying him. When Amelie and Jed are kidnapped and she finds herself locked in a dark room, she has no idea what is happening and why, yet she begins to feel safer there than she did with Jed.
This novel tells the story of Amelie in present day, and in the past, going back and forth between the two timelines so that you get to know the characters in the book. Amelie is a likeable character and it's easy to root for her throughout the book. She is smart and resiliant and never gives up.
The chapters in this novel are short, making it easy to keep reading "just one more". I found this story easy to read in one sitting as I was invested in wanting to know the outcome. I was disappointed in the ending of the book, as I felt that there were other ways the author could have gone with the story that would have been more satisfying. However, it didn't diminish my overall enjoyment of the story. Another win for B.A. Paris.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #St.Martin'sPress for an ARC of #ThePrisoner by #B.A.Paris - 4 stars
The only other B.A. Paris I have read is the Dilemma and I was not a fan at all! The Prisoner definitely redeemed it all for me. I thought the story was clever and enthralling. I liked how the story wrapped up but also left a little to be desired. I am looking forward to reading more by this author!
This was just meh for me. Felt like it dragged and the twists weren’t too interesting. Definitely wasn’t my favorite of Paris’ books but it was a quick read.
B.A. Paris does not disappoint. This was an interesting and thrilling read that I would highly recommend to you friends.
