I loved this intense thriller! I really enjoyed that this story was told entirely from Amelie's point of view because I admired her courage and strength. The ending took me entirely by surprise. Very well done.
Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest book by B.A. Paris, wonderfully narrated by Georgia Maguire - 4 stars!
Amelie finds herself homeless after the death of her father and leaves for London, where she can escape from being put in a care situation. There she meets Carolyn, who befriends her and employs her as a live-in housekeeper. Through Carolyn, she meets a group of friends who all work for the same magazine, headed by billionaire Ned Hawthorne. When Jed invites her along to Las Vegas on a business trip, he proposes marriage. But she soon finds herself being kidnapped and held prisoner in a separate room from Ned.
This was a fast-paced thriller - I started reading the digital ARC but soon switched to the audiobook and the narration was wonderful. The book's chapters alternate between Past and Present, giving lots of background to absorb. You have to swallow a lot of coincidences and a bit of repetition here, but I still enjoyed going along on this ride and figuring out all the pieces. Another winner by B.A. Paris!
Sad, intense. Sad. I felt so bad for Amelie. I liked her character. The story moved really fast, but the ending disappointed me. The plot and fast pace kept me reading until the final sentence.
As a big fan of B.A Paris, I was super excited to get a hold of an ARC of this book! Huge shoutout to @netgalley and @stmartins for the copy.
The Prisoner follows Amelie, a past orphan who is now married to rich guy Ned Hawthorpe. After being kidnapped and waking up in a dark, the story unravels to find out why and who kidnapped her.
At first, the initial first half or so of the book kept me hooked and staying up late into the night to figure out the books. I was intrigued by the kidnapping and how Amelie ended up in the situation. The flashbacks to her childhood also left me hooked.
But as I got deeper in the book, I felt like the story began to fall flat. I was less interested in the second half of the book and almost feel like it could have been a separate book.
Perhaps my expectations were too high but unfortunately I was left itching for a better book after this one.
This is a thrilling roller coaster ride from the get-go. Amelie is an orphan as a teenager. She has lost everyone she loves including her parents. She must fend for herself and figure out a way to survive unnoticed because she is under the legal age to live on her own and she WILL NOT go into foster care. Amelie moves to London and meets a few nice friends along the way. They take her in and treat her well.
As time goes by she begins working for a wealthy corporation and the owners are father and son. The son is a nice looking, rich single guy that ends up being spoiled and a nightmare of a human being. This is when the horror begins. Amelie ends up kidnapped and sitting in a dark room, being fed by a stranger who just drops off a tray of food off and on, and sleeping on a mattress with one sheet off in the corner of the room. What just happened to Amelie? She lives a very clean and simple life so how could this happen and why?
I love Behind Closed Doors and The Therapist by B.A. Paris and I do like this book too but it isn’t my favorite. I was waiting to get to know the characters a little better but I never connected with any of them. I slightly connected with Amelie but didn’t really get to know her as well as I like to get to know the main character of a story. The last few chapters wrap up the story nicely however, I was ready for it to be over by then. There is a lot of information in the last few chapters that kind of wore me out but do appreciate a book that answers all of the questions and the mystery is finally solved.
I enjoyed reading this book and definitely recommend it! It was a quick read and full of excitement and never a dull moment for Amelie. I am looking forward to B.A. Paris’ next book. They are all quality reads.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of this book. I always appreciate the opportunity to read and review books.
I really enjoyed The Prisoner by B.A. Paris. It is probably my favorite book I have read by her. I’m always a big fan of books that have past and present timelines, and Paris executed that so well in this book. The twist in the ending was not what I expected, and I’m really happy it was unexpected. I honestly wish it continued for a few more chapters and gave the readers just a little bit more, but I understand why it ends where it does. I would love to see another book with Amelie in the future. 💜
This was such an interesting, different thriller, I love to piece together a story, and I thought this one was particularly intriguing. I will say that I thought the pacing was a little off for me. I thought the back and forth, in the beginning, dragged a little, but the last piece of the story seemed to wrap up really quickly. While I don't need everything wrapped in a bow, I did want a little more closure. Once I was about halfway through, I couldn't put it down! All-in-all, it was an enjoyable read :)
Thank you so much NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the ARC of B.A. Paris' new book! This author is an automatic read for me because I know I like the writing style. I would have finished this one sooner, but I had to put it down so I could get some work done.
I could see myself in the room with the prisoner! It felt like I was with her every step of the way. I wish the book was a bit longer, but that is better than saying it was filled with fluff. I cannot wait till this one is released!
I've read everything B.A. Paris has written, and couldn't wait to start this one! I was hooked from the beginning and flew through the first two-thirds of the story. Unfortunately, like other reviewers have mentioned, the story felt like something was missing in the last third.
*Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to receive an advance copy of this book*
What a book! Definitely started slow, but then picked up way quicker and so many unexpected parts. I love thrillers like this and it was such a great read!
The first half of this book was a page turner! However, I felt like the book could have been significantly shorter and could have ended multiple times. The storyline seemed to drag out quite a bit towards the end. I’m still left a little confused as to why and what happened. All in all, it was a fast read, great thriller, just a little too messy towards the end.
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc copy of this book.
I was excited to read a B.A. Paris book for the first time, so thanks so much Net Galley for allowing me to receive an Advance Readers Copy (ARC). The beginning was very exciting but towards the middle/end of the book, I was unsatisfied. The kidnapping was so descriptive and I loved every minute of it. But as Amelie escapes and the story goes on, I just feel like the ending dragged on and made the full circle moment less interesting at that point.
What a crazy whirlwind of a book. I love the twists, but sometimes the storyline got confusing because key pieces were left out to make it a twist or mystery. It made me feel like I missed something so I would go back and reread it since I thought I was not paying attention.
This book lacked character development and I had no connection with any of the characters. This didn't feel the like work of B.A. Paris. I have loved her previous books.
I also didn't really enjoy the end of the book. I understand not all books are supposed to have a happy perfect little ending, but this one was frustrating.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
I was immediately drawn into this book from the start all the way through to the end! This is my first book from B.A. Paris and I'll definitely be trying more.
Amelie has been in survival mode for most of her life. This book is mainly focused on her marriage to a billionaire that turns way deadlier and more dangerous than she could have imagined when she is kidnapped and locked in a dark room for weeks because of her husband's unsavory dealings.
Again, this book had me hooked the whole way through. It was somewhat awkward when about 75% of the way through I thought the book was wrapping up but it just kept going. The ending wasn't bad, I just didn't super love how it was executed. I recommend!
Amelie was orphaned at 16 and moved to London alone. She ended up meeting a woman named Carolyn who took her in, and she soon became great friends with Carolyn and her friend group. The girls worked at a magazine run by rich and handsome Ned Hawthorpe. Amelie meets Ned and he proposes a business arrangement with her- 100,000 pounds for law school in exchange for her to marry him for one month to get his father off his back. This turns out to be the worst decision Amelie will ever make, leading to multiple murders and her own kidnapping.

💭Thoughts💭
This story was layered! When it finally all comes together though, you feel a little let down that not every aspect is explained. I also felt as though the prisoned scenes were dragged out a bit.

⌛️Favorite Moment⌛️
When Amelie follows the trail of the kidnappers to New Zealand and one of the big twists happens. You feel so proud of her for being so brave and determined to find answers.

🎉 Theme Ideas 🎉
Amelie survived off of porridge with brown sugar and bananas for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch.
Thank you so much to @NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I am a big fan of BA Paris’ but unfortunately this book did not Wow me as much as I was hoping. Amelie is a teenager who is alone in the world, and is trying to find her place. She meets a group of women who work for a man that is definitely trouble. Kidnapping, lies, and betrayal are plentiful, but I do feel like the ending fell very flat for me. The explanation of why everything happened the way that it did was a bit confusing, and I didn’t feel satisfied by the end at all. 3/5 ⭐️’s
As soon as I hear that there is another B A Paris book to be published, I get in line! I have loved most of her books. This one started really good. It stalled out on me in the second part and the ending left me frustrated. I wondered if somehow, I didn't download the whole book. This book is not a favorite.
A solid ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
B.A. Paris does it again. Love her writing and her story telling is amazing. She knows how to keep a reader's attention from the first page to the very last word.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc!
This mystery/thriller held me captive (pun intended) until the very end. I did not want to stop reading once I started. A lot of thrills and chills. Highly recommend!
This author has been hit and Miss with me. She has written one of my favorite thrillers of all time, Behind Closed Doors, but she has also written what I consider to be flops like this one.
I have read all of the books by this author and this is one of her best. The twists in the plot kept me wanting to keep turning the pages.
