B.A. Paris’ latest psychological thriller, “The Prisoner,” is a unique and twisty fast read--albeit, more than a tad unrealistic. Still, I have no issue suspending reality in order for the author to take me on an exciting ride, though this particular ride was a bit all over the place at times. And while I never truly connected with any of the main characters, I still found myself drawn into the story straight out of the gate, hard-pressed to put this one down. So, while I can’t say that this is my favorite B.A. Paris novel to date, I still found it to be an enjoyable and unpredictable summertime read.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am a big fan of B.A. Paris so this was 𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒓𝒂 exciting for me!
This was quite an entertaining read that I found hard to put down, and when I wasn’t reading— I was thinking about it. It left my wheels turning trying to figure it out.
My heart broke more than once for Amelie, she’s been dealt an unimaginably difficult hand in life and you can’t help but empathize with her story.
Although it hooked me from the onset, I wished there was more to the finale as it wrapped up quite quickly. I would have loved an epilogue— just to check in on Amelie because MY GOD she went through IT! I also think more backstory on Ned would have been beneficial to fully understand how he became the way he is.
Nonetheless, this made for a quick and entertaining read.

Amelia is being held prisoner. She doesn't know by who or why. Told in chapters that alternate between the past and the present, you find out how Amelia became a prisoner and how she is surviving. You will be held captive by this fast read. Another hit from B.A. Paris.
I really enjoy the books by this author and this one was as good as previous. I love how the story gets dribbled out, stepping back in time and making it all clear by the end. Tense story and characters you can't help but root for or despise. Looking forward to their next book!
21-year-old Amelie is finding out that sometime the bargains you make don't always benefit you in the end. Living as an orphan in Paris at age 16, she makes her way to London where she is befriended and aided by a woman she meets in a coffee shop. As this friendship grows and Amelie is introduced to a wider and wealthier circle of friends, co-workers and employers, she finds herself making a bargain with her boss; marry him for a month to ease the pressure from his father, get a quick divorce and get paid the money she needs to go to law school. What could go wrong? Plenty, especially when she learns what type of man Ned really is and what he is capable of doing. In this newest novel from author Paris, the twists and turns keep coming. Who are the kidnappers? What do they want with Amelie - or is she collateral damage? Who is behind the plot and why? Amelie is a strong young woman who wants answers and she intends to get them, but are the answers the ones she expected? You won't want to put this one down until you get the answers too.
Spoiler alert; I am a huge fan of B.A. Paris. Another spoiler alert: I am an even bigger fan of B.A. Paris after reading The Prisoner. What a fabulous story - I was drawn in from the first page. Great suspense, well-developed characters, a few twists - the perfect recipe for an unputdownable page-turner. Bravo B.A. Paris - I can hardly wait for your next one!
I enjoyed this book very much. It had so many twists and turns and at the end you learned something you didn’t think would happen. It was a great book with a great author!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars)
The Prisoner by B.A. Paris is a quick-paced thriller about Amelie, who at 17 years old became an orphan after her father dies. She goes to London with no plan and little money and the rest is a twist-y thriller that will have you guessing every page.
This book truly grabbed me from page one. I loved the interspersed storyline of present and past, slowly building Amelie's story and why she is where she is in the present. As more is revealed, the answer does not become clear until the end which I love. The present storyline also only takes place within a few weeks so the quickness of the plot does not take away at all and only adds to the "on your edge" feel this novel will give you.
The writing is brilliant, the storyline digs in and doesn't let go until the very end, I completed this book in a day and can highly recommend it for lovers of thriller novels.
Amelie Lamont has had a tough life. Her mother died in childbirth, along with Amelie's baby brother. Later, Amelie's Papa dies of cancer. Distraught, Amelie heads to London to try to find work and save money for college. She meets Carolyn, who offers Amelie a job and friendship. Carolyn's friends then introduce Amelie to wealthy Ned Hawthorne. She is then given an opportunity to earn money to attend college, and she offers a proposition of her own.
When Ned and Amelie are kidnapped, Amelie believes it is payback for the death of a woman in his employ. But, there is much more to the abduction than she expected. Her captors don't speak to her, and keep her in the dark.
The concept was interesting, but I felt it went on too long, plus it was hard to reconcile the entire story with the ending.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my review. I never know what to expect from B.A. Paris and this story is so twisty and convoluted, I had to keep re-evaluating my feelings about it. The characters are extra flawed and I needed a score card to determine the “good” guys from the “bad” guys. Everything continues to change and it is unlikely a reader can sort it all out before the end. I always enjoy her books - they challenge the reader to solve the puzzle and complete the riddle.
This is another captivating read from B.A. Paris. This thriller grabs you from the first page and takes you on a twist-filled ride until the shocking ending. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Just could not get into this one at all. DNFed after the second chapter. I know there was supposed to be a “shock factor” at the beginning but I was not invested in the story at all. I think BA Paris books don’t work for me personally as this marks the 3rd book of hers I either DNFed or didn’t like and wish I DNFed.
So so excited to receive an arc of a B.A. Paris book!! I've loved all of her previous books and this one was no exception! I kept needing to know more!
Amelie lost her mother at a young age. When she then loses her father, Amelie finds that she has nowhere to go and must fend for herself. She does what she can to make ends meet, but circumstances lead her to living on the streets. Miraculously, Amelie has a chance encounter with a woman whose kindness changes Amelie's life. Her life changes even more when she marries the uber-rich Ned Hawthorne. Things take a drastic turn when Amelie and Ned are kidnapped and demand a ransom. Who are the kidnappers? What will happen if the ransom isn't paid? What will happen if the ransom IS paid?
I'm a huge fan of B.A. Paris and will read anything she writes. The Prisoner had some serious anxiety-filled moments for the reader. I liked the backstory and character development. I didn't find the twist to be totally mind-blowing, but I enjoyed this one all the same.
I loved that this book started out by really grabbing my attention!
I really loved the main character, Amelie! She was so strong for being so young. She was really smart in dangerous situations and could keep a level head when things were scary and unknown.
The 1st part of the book went back and forth between past and present.
The Prisoner was one of those books that feeds you little nuggets of information at a time, without revealing the whole picture. Those kind of books always keep me reading!
At about the half way point it did start to lag. However, it did pick up again. At about the 75% mark it started to get a little confusing and I was ready for the story to end. However, the last 20% of the book did pick up. I couldn't put the book down till I finished it. The book ended up clearing up the confusion I was feeling at 75%. Overall, I felt like it could have been a little clearer. Ultimately, I didn't love this book like I loved some of B. A. Paris’s other books, but I would recommend it.
Rated 3.5 rounded up to 4
I’ve always liked B.A. Paris novels so I was excited to get this one before the release. Amelie grew up with a rough start in love. She then meets billionaire, Ned. She gets swept up in a lifestyle and gets married. Then wakes up one day kidnapped. But she feels safer with her kidnappers then her husband. It was a quick read to get thru that kept the storyline moving fast. I do wish it had spent a little more time on her being held captive and what those people were like. Some of the storylines went too quickly, like what happens to her friends. But it makes you realize how evil people can be and not even care about it.
3.5 stars. Interesting enough to keep me reading; there are a lot of twists but almost too many. The first half is really good—you’re immediately thrown into Amelie’s kidnapping with no context, so you’re hooked from the get-go trying to figure out what’s going on. The second half gets a bit convoluted and too drawn out at times. I did find myself wishing that they would get on with things. It bugged me that Ned’s reasons for marrying Amelie were extremely dumb and flimsy. But I guess that could have been done intentionally to show what a crazy person he is. I was mad that Amelie didn’t take at least SOME money from Ned’s estate at the end after what she went through, but I guess she’s a better person than me 😂 Anyways, it was overall enjoyable and entertaining and worth the read!
Another great book by B.A.. Paris! There were lots of twists and it kept me guessing the whole time. The story is fast paced, and it kept me up reading way past my bedtime just to see what happens next.
I finally got around to reading one of my NetGalley ARCs!
I really enjoyed this thriller! Have you read this book? I have read one other book by B. A. Paris and enjoyed it as well.

The Prisoner was such a good book. I am a huge B.A. Paris fan and when I saw that she had a new book out I just knew that I needed to read it asap. The first half of the book really had me at the edge of my seat. The second half was a little slower than the beginning but it still kept me guessing. Then ending was also very satisfying. I really do enjoy books that go back and forth between current life and the past that led them to that so for me, this book was a win! Thank you Netgally for the advanced copy.
