A quick and interesting read. Lots and twists and turns kept me turning the pages to finish this book in three days. It is a bit far-fetched, but that is a hazard of the genre. You are constantly kept in the dark – literally – about the captors, and even when you find out, the author gives you further closure in the last 15% of the book. I thought this was well written and I enjoyed it.
Chapter 1 though! You'll be hooked by this fast-paced thriller! My only wish is that the end is a strong as the beginning.
I was lucky enough to obtain an advance copy of this book set to release in November. This is a first B.A Paris book for me & surely won't be my last.
You'll find yourself rooting for Ameile, but she won't need your support. She's a survivor and wise beyond her years due to her tumultuous life experiences. Nothing can stop her - or can it?
What girl doesn’t think marrying a rich man could make life easier? Amelie has had a hard life but is surrounded by friends and is on her way to the future she has dreamed of for years. Ned Hawthorpe makes her an offer that will help both parties get what they want; he says it’s to avoid an unwanted marriage, she needs money for law school. Once the marriage is complete, Amelie realizes she’s made a huge mistake. Ned keeps her away from everyone she loves and as she tries to find a way out; she and Ned are kidnapped. Who is holding Amelie prisoner? I was hooked from the beginning. A fast read in the beginning. The ending tied everything up with a little bow;however, it took quite a long time to sum it up. I would have liked more backstory about Ned Hawthorpe. I also would have liked to known 5 years into the future for Amelie. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I was so excited to be given the opportunity to read this new release by B.A. Paris. I have to admit at first it took me a minute to get into it but then it was like a light switched flipped and i was hooked. I love how Amelies character was portrayed. How her life was highlighted to show all the struggles she faced and overcome earlier in her life prior to the kidnapping and everything she had to endure throughout that. Awesome twisted plot for sure.
I love how all the story unfolds. Amazing book. I loved it ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC book. Great author and another great book!!
3.5 stars rounded down.
This is a face-paced read. It starts with a bang - Amelie is kidnapped with Ned. They are tied up, heads covered, and ushered out of the house by strangers. They are shoved in separate rooms. Amelie is kept in near complete darkness, not even a ghost of light. She paces, she counts steps, she wonders how this will all end.
The chapters are short so the first half of the story goes very quick. The timeline goes from past to present, back and forth, to showly reveal what has lead Amelie to the point she's locked in this room. It details her friendships, her new job and the new people in her life. It takes a while for the horrors to start being revealed.
The twist was great and something I didn't see coming. If it had ended a little sooner right after the twist (with a few changes), I think this could have been a solid 4 or even 4.5 read for me. But soon after the twist is revealed, Part 2 bogs down a bit. It slows waaaay down as Amelie struggles. There are a lot of really big leaps after that I didn't love. The story was great, it was entertaining, but I didn't love how it all wrapped up.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Excellent twisty thriller, highly recommend, will keep you guessing the whole time, had a strong female character which is nice to see these days because there is definitely not enough of it... Definitely did not see the twist coming, gradebook all around thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this Arc
This physiological thriller has you guessing from the beginning. Chapters switch between present and past storylines. With each turn of a page you find yourself wondering how these two time parallels are going to connect.
Great descriptive writing, especially during the present day prose. Highly recommend.
This was a page turning psychological thriller that I did not want to put down. The storyline grabbed my interest right away and Paris's short chapters moved the plot along so well. And there was a big plot twist that I didn't see coming. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
BA Paris does not disappoint!!! The story is told in past & preset of Amelie and what happens when she marries her boss for a 1 month arrangement. She finds out that that the man she temporarily marries leaves no problems alive. When they get kidnapped and she is in a dark room-she fights to keep her sanity. As the story unravels, she thinks everyone that surrounds them is in on it in some capacity and she needs too find the truth. A truth that may shock her. I could not read it fast enough to figure it out. You won’t be able to put it down!!
This was another great suspense from B.A. Paris. I read this book so quickly and was invested from the start.
I feel This one started out strong, and was similar to the feelings I had reading Behind Closed Doors. However, the last half was too much of a play by play. Literally describing every single action in detail, and was way too drawn out. Could have been a 100 pages less. The first half was so fast-paced, lots left to the imagination, filled with suspense, and the last half felt like an entirely different book. I also Don’t feel that every factor needed to be re-visited.
This book was one of my most anticipated for the year and I'm so glad I was able to get an early copy thanks to St. Martin's Press!
This is B. A. Paris' 6th book and I have now read all of them. She's an auto-buy/read author for me for sure. My favorite so far has been Bring Me Back and this one falls slightly under that one for second place.
This story gripped me right away and I was sitting there within the first few pages like "WAIT! WHAT IS HAPPENENING?" I love the way she slowly reveals important details in the first half making you second guess everything/everyone.
The chapters are super short and switch between past/present for the first half of the book.
The ending was just OK for me. There were SO many details and it was "told not shown" in a way that dragged on a little long for my taste.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this one and think it will be a big hit when it publishes on November 15th!
3.5 Rounded Up
Interesting and clever plot (despite being stretched somewhat into the unbelievable territory). Great character development for Amelie and Ned, but little for the remaining characters - some are practically interchangeable.
This definitely could have been a 4.5 to 5 star book if not for the drawn out ending. I’m glad for the explanations the ending provided though.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story started off with a lot of promise, but once the plot continued to develop, it simply didn’t keep my interest. It was a lot of repetition. The characters were not likable and the reason the main character was kidnapped fell short for me and was quite disappointing.
Also, the ending?? It was so abrupt and random.. I thought I missed something
B. A. Paris is one of the first authors I ever read when jumping into the thriller/suspense genre. She is such a great writer and her books are why I still love and read thriller books! The Prisoner is another magnificent book, written by B. A. Paris! Her descriptive words take you right to where the book is being written, you can see, taste, smell, the whole scene, every time! I loved this book, the puzzle pieces slowing coming together. The past and present coming into each other, just brilliant! Highly recommend this book! Thank you to @netgalley for this opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
B.A. Paris can be hit or miss for me. I did enjoy this overall much more than some previous books. I was very invested in the story and why Amelie was kidnapped. This has short chapters, tension, and lots of suspense! The story is told in dual timelines and I kept reading this very quickly to get back to the past timeline. The present day timeline just felt a bit repetitive since she is in the same room for a huge portion of the book. I guessed the 'who' very early on but not the 'why'. The main character had a good background and story arc but some of the other important supporting characters lacked much detail and I confused a couple names because of that. I didn't love the ending and how everything wrapped up (a bit eye-rolly too) but the first 80% was very solid for me. You really have to suspend reality with much of this story as well. Amelie also mentioned Stockholm Syndrome earlier and I think this played a role as well into the slightly ambiguous ending.
This one hurts a little because I’m truly such a big fan of B.A. Paris! I think she’s a fantastic thriller author, but her last two books have unfortunately fell short for me. I was so excited for this book! It was incredibly high on my most anticipated reads for this year.
Synopsis: Amelie wakes up in a dark room, alone and terrified. She has been kidnapped and she has no idea why. Her captors do not communicate with her in any way except to bring her food. The story then alternates between past and present timelines uncovering how Amelie ended up in her current situation.
The story started off with a lot of promise, but once the plot continued to develop, it simply didn’t keep my interest. The backstory of Amelie and the corrupt characters and events that led to her being captured were boring. The characters were not likable, and the information dump at the end was confusing and forgettable. It had good moments of suspense sprinkled throughout but the whole book was one step forward, three steps back 😒
Also, the ending?? I literally turned the page expecting the story to keep going because it was so abrupt and random.
Really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller! Lots of twists to keep you guessing. The main character makes some interesting life choices but is resilient and keeps pushing through. Will definitely recommend this to our library patrons who like plot driven stories.
Amelie finds herself in a whirlwind marriage with a billionaire... but at what cost? When she and her new husband are abducted and kept as prisoners, she wonders how she could have gotten herself into this situation. Her husband isn't who she thought he was - is he the enemy, or are the kidnappers? Who is on her side?
B.A. Paris has a way of writing that totally captivates me every time. You definitely end up connecting with and feeling sorry for Amelie, and rooting for her to find her way out of the kidnapping. I didn't love the ending, I wish it was thought out a little bit more, but not all stories have closure, and I need to be okay with that. Amelie suffers so much that you really want her to have a happy ending. Still a great read!
I was disappointed in this one - I've enjoyed her novels in the past and always found them to be quick and easy reads full of lots of twists and turns that, while requiring some suspension of disbelief, remained just plausible enough throughout most of the story that I could enjoy them. This one, on the other hand, veered into unbelievable early on and only dug its way deeper as the story progressed. It dragged on and was fairly repetitive throughout the hostage situation - which I understand on one hand, but doesn't exactly make for compelling reading chapter after chapter on the other. And I found the resolution a bizarre mix of predictable and odd, and while it did nothing to make the story more believable, it did make it slightly more entertaining. On the whole though this was not my favorite of the Paris novels..
