This was a fun read! Gripping and has the characteristics of BA Paris's writing. The narrative unravels well and I felt absorbed in it. I don't know how the author has used the same claustrophobia-filled plot over and over but also reinvented it. I will read any book the author writes.

Amelia is a young woman who is alone in the world after
the death of her parents. She has returned to live in London. One day at a coffee shop, she meets Carolyn. Carolyn hires Amelia to help around her home with cooking and cleaning. Eventually, Amelia moves into Carolyn's home. Through Carolyn, Amelia meets
some of Carolyn’s friends. And Amelia becomes close to the other women, Justine and Lina. They work at a magazine, Exclusive; Ned, a wealthy man, is in charge of Exclusive. Amelia meets Ned through Carolyn. When Ned proposes a scheme that she, Amelia, marry him. for a short period of time, he will pay her. She cannot refuse his offer. She needs the money.
Cannot refuse. Things go awry when she witnesses horrific events. When Amelia and Ned are kidnapped and held captive, things get out of control. The story moves seamlessly from past to present to tell the whole story.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who was responsible for the abduction of two people. And why they were abducted
. In the end, everything is revealed with shocking twists. This book pulled me in and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

B.A. Paris is an instant buy author for me so I was thrilled to receive this ARC to review. I don't particularly enjoy books that bounce back and forth with past and present, this was very easy to keep up with. Initially it was slow to start but about 1/3 of the way in it grabbed ahead of me and it had quite the shocking ending! This is definitely another one I would recommend!

What would you do to avenge a death? - Murder? Kidnapping?

This was my first read ever by B.A. Paris – and she did not disappoint!

In this suspenseful thriller, The Prisoner, we follow 16-year-old Amelie as she becomes an orphan and figures out life on her own. Moving to London, she meets Carolyn who quickly takes her in and gives her a job – and a home – including friendships with employees of an impressive magazine, Exclusives, ran by entitled millionaire Ned Hawthorpe. Ned, who has been disowned by his father so as not to tarnish the important Hawthorpe Foundation, has devised a plan to get out of marrying a family friend and propositions Amelie that he would give her money to attend school if she married him for one month.

Unfortunately, Ned will do anything to protect his name when sexual assault allegations come forth from one of Amelie’s friends . . . and things spiral quickly out of control with Amelie and Ned being kidnapped – where Amelie is held separately in a small, pitch-black room.

Twists and coverups emerge as to attempt to righten wrongs that Ned has made, while money talks from behind-the-scenes Hawthorpe Foundation donors. Even though Amelie is young and naïve, she is a good protagonist and leads the story well. With an interesting, refreshing plot line and great descriptive imagery – I felt like I was Amelie at times stuck in a dark room, feeling what she was going through.

This story started immediately (page 1) and I wasn’t able to come up for breath until I was done! I loved the fast pace of this novel (most chapters were short and left you wanting to quickly go on to the next).

However, I wish some of the plot lines were flushed out a tad more – I can’t say which without spoiling anything – but I wanted some more information that wasn’t given. Maybe, some main points were far-fetched, but it still made for a good read. Also, I felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride and then the book just stopped. I needed the ending to give me something more (I’m not sure what) but it didn’t deliver.

This is a claustrophobic drama for sure, and I will read more B.A. Paris novels in the future. I give this 3.8 stars rounded up to 4 (due to the ending).

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! All opinions are my own!

This book grew on me, so much that I couldn't put it down at the end. I liked how the past and the present eventually caught up so we were able to enjoy the story in the present to the end.

Primarily, thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley, and B. A. Paris for the ARC of The Prisoner. Admittedly, this was the first Paris book that I have read and it will definitely not be my last. The short chapters made me fly through the book while thinking I could get through one more chapter, and then one more…and then one more. Amelie was such a loveable and well-developed character. I actually almost felt too sorry for her for all of her life circumstances. There were so many twists and turns that throughout the book I was wondering how everything would be explained in a way that didn’t feel clumsy. My complaint was that there seemed to be too much explanation at the end, to the point where I was wondering how long it would actually take the author to wrap it up. I think it was just a little bit too far-fetch and convoluted for it to need that much explanation. This book was so complex but a very easy read. I think I expected a little more after all the hype surrounding this author but it may be to my advantage that this was my first.

So good and twisty! Amelie is a young girl who lost her mom and dividing during childbirth and then her Dad to illness. She settles on London where she makes friends and married to a questionable rich man Ned. Things start unraveling when she is mistreated and kept a prisoner by Ned - and that’s before she and Med were actually kidnapped. Will she get out? Why was she kidnapped.? Are her captors on her side? So twisty and good I had to stay up late a few nights because I just wanted to know what happened!

Great twisted plot and hidden identities that keep your head spinning until each shock is revealed. Don't even attempt to figure it out as with most of these books, Paris is one step ahead of us!

B.A.Paris never fails in writing great books. I love stories where it keeps you guessing till the end. I received an ARC from Netgalley of this book and it did not disappoint. The story grabs you from the start. We follow Amelie as she starts her life over and marries a handsome billionaire, Ned.

But things get hairy when both of them are kidnapped but separated. What you think will happen has a bit of a twist to it as you read on. And turning pages is definitely what you will want to do in this book. You think you know the story - but really you dont - and the author keeps you guessing and then being surprised of the turn of events as you read.

Definitely a TBR to be added to your pile of books. Release date is November 1, 2022, so either preorder or mark your calendar to get this one. #fourstars #netgalley

🤔💭: First off, thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me an eARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review! I’ve read other books from this author that I’ve enjoyed so definitely was excited to check this one out. I enjoyed this storyline and how it went back and forth to give us context on what was happening and everything tied together nicely. Amelie lost both of her parents and has moved to London to start a life on her own. She gets swept up into the glamorous lifestyle and ends up marrying billionaire Ned Hawthorne. One day she wakes up in a pitch black room not knowing where she is. Who are these mysterious captors and why has she been taken? I really loved the majority of the book but the ending just kind of fell a little flat for me and I still had a few unanswered questions but overall still was a great read!

The development of the characters was thoughtful and encouraged me to try to figure them out. The plot was solid and moved at a good pace. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it kept me intrigued to the last page!

This was a little wild! As a super fast-paced thriller, this book had lots of twists and turns that had me thinking I knew what was happening - only to realize I didn't. I do feel like there were some unfinished pieces to this story I would have loved closure to; anyone else? Overall, a fast and fun page-turner!

I am a huge fan of BA Paris! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read The Prisoner!

Amelie is forced to grow up fast at just 17 years old. She lost her mother in her childhood and later her father as a 17 year old girl. This forces her to grow up quickly and learn everything there is to know about cooking and cleaning. When her father dies, she's forced to become homeless working restaurant jobs, barely surviving. That is until she comes across a beautiful women, Carolyn crying in a coffee shop. This is when Amelie finally catches a break. Carolyn hires Amelie as her live in house-keeper and she can finally save up to her dream of becoming a lawyer.

That is until Ned Hawthorne comes into her life and turns her life upside down. Her dream of becoming a lawyer forces her into something that changes her life forever, Very quick read! Couldn't put it down! 4 stars!

B.A. Paris is a brilliant writer of suspense and mystery. Her previous novels are widely read and enjoyed by so many audiences -- myself included. I have really enjoyed her past novels, but The Prisoner didn't resonate with me. I had a difficult time connecting to the characters and the ending didn't feel satisfying.

This is my first read by B. A. Paris and I really enjoyed it!

The Prisoner was a story that had me guessing over and over. Like Amelie, I thought I’d had the kidnappers figured out but I was all wrong! Such a surprise!!

I loved the way the first section was written in short snippets bouncing from the past to the present. It made the story easy to follow and didn’t allow for any stagnation. It also wrapped all of the different characters into a nice package so I quickly knew who everyone was and where they fit in.

And that ending… I’m holding onto that “maybe”. Poor Amelie had lost so so much. It lends to the possibility of her having a connection to someone who would understand her. Also, maybe it’s my recent dark smut exposure but I wouldn’t be at all mad about a little romantic fantasy here. 😂

I went into this thriller not expecting much because of the reviews, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the end! Though the first part can kind of drag on when you’re in Amelie’s “present” timeline while she’s being held as a prisoner, her “past” timeline was what kept me turning page after page. I *needed* to figure out how she got herself in the situation she was in & why. By the end of Part 1/start of Part 2, I honestly thought I had the entire book figured out. It just seemed so simple & I’ll be honest, I was kind of disappointed. But then, just as Amelie thinks she’s got it figured out, you realize she doesn’t and you’re also wrong! I had a theory about the twist but I couldn’t make it work, so I dropped it HA. *But*… B.A. Paris was one step ahead with a solid twist that actually made perfect sense with the explanation at the end. For a change, I actually liked how this thriller ended - albeit, I was a little put off that there wasn’t an epilogue or something, as it did seem a little abrupt. But, all in all, I enjoyed this read! And it was a SUPER quick one, too!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Another great book written by B. A. Paris. After the death of her father, 17 year old Amelie moves to London and tries making it on her own. After having lost her job and down in her luck, she meets Carolyn who extends her hand by offering a live in housekeeper who quickly becomes like a surrogate older sister and her 2 close friends Lina and Justine help round out the family she's been longing for. Shortly after moving out and accepting a job at the girls company, Amelie meets billionaire CEO Ned Hawthorpe. As plots unfold leading up to their kidnapping leaving Amelie in a lightless room urgent to escape by flashing between the present and past Paris really brings you into the characters lives and emotions while perfectly describing the places and scenery surrounding her abduction.
