I just reviewed The Prisoner by B.A. Paris. #NetGalley

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be published November 1, 2022.

This is my sixth book by this author. The first half of this book (The Kidnapping) was fast-paced and a page-turner but in the second half (The Reckoning) the pace really slowed down and the story got a bit convoluted and I wasn’t nearly as engaged.

Following the death of her father, and with no other family, Amelie flees to London to start over. She's confident, independent, and determined to find her own way. Once in London she finds a job, and friends, and gets mixed up with Ned Hawthorpe. One day she is struggling to find enough to eat, and the next she is jet setting to Las Vegas, and perhaps a Vegas-style wedding?

However, there is no time to relax for the newlyweds as one night she is kidnapped and held in a dark room. She's imprisoned with her husband, Ned, who she is also starting to feel as a prisoner to. But she has a plan to escape...

The Prisoner definitely kept me at the edge of my seat. And you definitely couldn't help but emphasize with Amelie who seemed to move from one "prison" to another. Her exploration to find answers was inspiring--others may have accepted their fate and tried to move on. I'm always a fan of B.A. Paris, and this one didn't disappoint.

This book was super fast moving and a page turner. I read the entire thing in an 8 hour car ride!
At one point I thought I had it all figured out but it definitely took a turn that I wasn’t expecting. This is a book I will be recommending to my friends and clients!

Good book! Well that was different! Good different! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, and a very twisted story! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my kindle! I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

A good solid thriller, fans of B.A. Paris should really enjoy this story. I really liked the first three quarters of the book, but I felt the last quarter was convoluted.

Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC.

Wow! Paris throwing another great thriller our way. I was hooked from the start. My only criticism is that the big reveal at the end came out very quickly (within the last few chapters) and didn’t seem very natural. Otherwise, a great read!!

Thank you to Netgalley and publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Publication: November 1, 2022

I would give this 3.5 stars (rounded to 4). Paris has been one of the top thriller authors that I get very excited to read about. When I was approved for this arc, I was beyond excited.

This book is her typical fashion of creating the atmosphere to be unreliable along with characters. The beginning sucked me in at first but then started to slow down. It picked back up around the halfway mark and kept me up at night to try to figure out the mystery.

The few things I didn't like: I felt that Part 1 and Part 2 should have been swapped for a smoother transition. I also wasn't a fan of the ending. It read like a romance novel for a second rather than a thriller.

Overall, an enjoyable book that left me wanting more!

Perfect for fans: new to thrillers, mysteries, popcorn thrillers (short chapters)

I received an ARC of, The Prisoner, by B.A. Paris. What a story, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Amelie has been kidnapped, held prisoner, will she be freed, or will she always feel like a prisoner?

Ba Paris does it again. Great story, amazing twists, couldn't stop reading. I look forward to her continued success. I'd say the only thing i didn't 100% love was the title, but other than that, one of my favorite reads this summer.

This was two different books in one, great first half. Struggled with the second half. I did however enjoy this book and couldn't put it down. Thank to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC

2.5 rounded up to 3. Hard to believe this was a B.A. Paris book. It was okay. I did not like the ending at all. Normally I love this author's books but this one is a disappointment.

I enjoyed this book! I think my favorite B.A. Paris book is The Breakdown but this one was good as well. The story was good and kept me guessing. I enjoyed the two timelines. The payoff was a bit "extreme" but overall, it was a good story. I finished it quickly and the story kept me wanting more.

This is it! This is the book of the year! It has everything. BA Paris delivers, yet again, a flawless tale of suspense and drama. I am always amazed by how she can take any scenario and turn it into a claustrophobic thriller, and this time, inside of another claustrophobic thriller at the same time. Claustrophobic thriller inception!

I’ll admit, when I saw the summary for this one, I was skeptical. When I started it, I was even more worried. It throws you right into the story without a chance to catch your breath or get your wits about you. We immediately meet Amalie as she’s being held prisoner in the dark. We don’t know why or by whom.

We then go to the past to build the story of how we ended up here. It only took a few chapters and I was HOOKED. Having already lost her mother, Amalie quickly ran off to London upon her father’s death and after a brief stint in hostels and then homelessness, she meets a wonderful woman named Carolyn who takes her in as a live-in assistant. She earns her keep and they become incredibly close. Carolyn and her friends, Justine and Lina, become her chosen family.

We know from the present that she is married to Ned Walthorpe, the socialite owner of a magazine that her friends are associated with but we don’t know why and we can gather that she and Ned are not fond of each other, to put it lightly. So why are they married and where are they?! Is she a target here or just collateral damage in a ploy to hurt the Walthorpe family?

The unfolding of this was masterful. They overuse the term “unputdownable” but that’s exactly what this was. The journey was great. I was savoring it, not wanting it to end, but also needing the answers and it was wrapped up beautifully. I should have never doubted this author!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review in exchange for an honest review.

I've enjoyed previous works by this author and was excited to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The book didn't disappoint. It was a fast-paced thriller that was easy to read over a weekend. The dual timelines mean the suspense continues to build throughout the plot.
The main character, Amelie, was incredibly sympathetic, well-developed, and easy to root for. The secondary characters were not. The lack of development in the secondary characters and the very abrupt ending was my only complaints. Overall, this is a solid thriller of similar quality and subject matter that one would expect from this author. I'd definitely read another or recommend it.

This book was fantastic! I rarely give a 5 star review, but I could not put this one down. I read it in two days.
The story was fast paced and kept me intrigued from the first page. We are taken chapter by chapter between the present where Amelie is being held prisoner in complete darkness with a captor that never speaks, to the past and Amelie's whirlwind marriage to Ned.
The small reveals throughout the story keep you invested and keep you guessing. I definitely recommend this one.

“What’s behind your eyes can be your own worst prison”

This was quite the page turner for me. It’s a past and present timeline that moves pretty quickly, but is easy to follow throughout without getting lost.

Amelie Lamont has her own troubles and is trying to find a quick fix to then when met with a proposition from Ned Hawthorpe. I will say I’m usually pretty good at guessing the twists, but this one surprised me!

My only issue is the ending. I do wish it would of carried out a little more in details about Amelie.

Overall, another well written book by B.A Paris that I really enjoyed.

Thank you NetGalley and B.A Paris for the opportunity to read the eARC.

This was a fantastic read!!! The Prisoner kept me hooked from the very first page. The chapters alternates from past to present and kept the story moving very fast. Would definitely recommend!!

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris had my attention from the first page. The book opens with a first-hand account of a woman, Amelie, being abducted and I was immediately intrigued with the way she was processing the information. I felt as lost and confused as she did, wondering how she ended up in this situation. As she started focusing on how to survive, I was hooked.

As the story progresses, the reader sees two timelines and starts to understand Amelie’s life before the abduction. I loved the way the way it all came together, as the reader starts to understand the motivation behind her captors. I was not expecting it to unfold the way it did.

The first 70% of the book is tense and fast-paced, with a mystery I couldn’t put down. The last 30% slowed a bit and was focused on closing out any loose ends in the story. I really loved the premise and the overall plot but did wish the tension hadn’t dropped off towards the end.

Overall, this is a solid thriller and one I would recommend to those looking for a page-turner. I’ve read all of the author’s novels and this is in the top 2 for me, along with The Dilemma. They both place characters in seemingly impossible situations, where they make in-the-moment decisions that they are forced to reckon with longer-term. If that sounds interesting to you – give this a try!

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy! I was really looking forward to reading the latest from this author and appreciated the chance to preview it.
