Amelie is an orphan who builds her life up. In the past and preset she continually shows she’s a survivor. When she finds herself in a dark room being held captive, the questions of who and why she is there will leave you guessing. This is a fast read that kept me intrigued the whole time!
4.5 stars rounded up!
One sentence synopsis: Amelie Lamont is an orphan when she moves to London and marries millionaire Ned Hawthorpe, only to one day be kidnapped and wake-up in a pitch black room.
This was a fast-paced, action packed thriller! We're thrown into the middle of the story from the very beginning and forced to pick our way through bit-by-bit in alternating timelines between the past and the present.
I loved the main character and how B.A. Paris added Stockholm Syndrone and other various psychological affects being kept a prisoner can trigger in the victim.
I absolutely adored the plot! It was different and unexpected and I think Paris did a great job keeping us guessing who the kidnappers were, what their intentions were, who can we rely on, and what will they do next?
What I didn't like was the execution of the conclusion. Even though we got answers, there wasn't personal closure for the main character. The chapters just suddenly stopped and I was left wanting more.
I get that we weren't supposed to get a happy ending, but I still needed closure.
A little more of a slower burn than a lot of the other books I have read from this author. Still good, and kept me interested during a day at the pool.
I have read most of this author's books and I have given inconsistent ratings for them. Some books were solid 5 stars; some were 2 stars. Sadly, this book, for me, was on the lower range. The first half of the book (The Kidnapping) kept me engaged and interested in finding out what was going on. The second half of the book (The Reckoning) was just a big mess! Between Carl, Hunter, Mr. Carr, Mr. Barriston and Lukas, it was too confusing. Not that it mattered much - I wasn't invested in any character besides for Amelie. This book was just meh.
Amazing ready. Finished in one afternoon. I need this to be published now, so I can recommend to my book club. They want to read it NOW! Please.
I throughly enjoyed this edge-of-your-seat thriller! Though the twists were somewhat predictable, it was still a fun ride.
The Prisoner is a psychological page turning thriller that will leave you guessing until the very last page. Amelie is a strong but vulnerable character trying to build a new life for herself after a difficult past. She builds friendships and finally feels like her life is coming together. She's happy. Then she meets Ned Hawthorne. Ned turns her life upside down. Meeting him holds her prisoner physically, mentally, and emotionally. As her life falls apart around her, she realizes she needs answers. Who kidnapped her and why?
A tense read told in two timelines. If you like thrillers, try B.A. Paris, The Prisoner coming November 1, 2022.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC.
I received this book from NetGalley.
This was such a great, and fast paced read. The story did not disappoint. Right when I thought I had all the facts and there could be no more twists and turns or information to learn, BAM there was more. Honestly, the story could have easily wrapped up around 200 pages in, but the mystery had so many layers you were able to dive deeper with the main character into what really happened. As I got closer to the end I got a little nervous about how it was going to wrap up and if I would feel satisfied with the conclusion, but I personally liked how it ended. I did guess a surprise at the end (no spoilers here), but I loved that I was right about it.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Huge B.A. Paris forever fan.
This book was a fast action pack read. Going between the Past to the Present. Just when you think nothing more can happen, BAM! It does.
Started out so good, had so much potential, and the ending was just so unsatisfying.I have loved every book Ive read by B.A Paris but this one just fell flat.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to receive an advance copy in exchange for my honest review- all thoughts and opinions are my own!
B.A. Paris has done it again! I adore their plot twists/turns. This one gripped me from the first page of a kidnapping and the descriptions of her fear on just the first page, i stayed up for 5 hours to read this one before bed. Quick paced, and not drawn out- loved it, will recommend and i can see this being a good hit for convo in a book club.
This book started out very promising, with a fast paced, engaging story about a kidnapping. The chapters usually alternated between the current, suspenseful present and the past, which told an interesting backstory. For me, the final chapters were a let down. The ending was predictable and uninspiring. I guess this just ended up being average for me. I didn't hate it but I can't recommend it as a favorite thriller.
Thank you, Net Galley for the ARC!
This story is told through alternating time periods. Amelie is a sixteen year old girl in charge of taking care of her sick father. Once her father passes away, she feels lost and hopeless, until she crosses paths with Carolyn. In a continued series of meeting people who are wealthy at Carolyn’s company, she meets Ned, the owner of the magazine. They end up getting married, and then getting kidnapped soon after.
This book didn’t quite hold my attention as much as I would have liked, and I didn’t really care for any of the characters or find them relatable.
All I can say is WOW!! B.A. Paris has given us another edge of our seats, twisting, turning, quick thriller with
"The Prisoner". I felt like I was locked in the dark room with Amelie and never would have guessed that Hunter was involved in the kidnapping. The chapters are short and kept me reading way past my bedtime. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick easy read.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Netgalley and B.A. Paris for the opportunity to read this ARC.
This book was so much fun to read. Once I hit the halfway mark I couldn’t put it down. It is told in 2 different timelines, the past and present. Amelie is the main character and we are following her 2 timelines. The past you are reading about how she becomes a prisoner. The present is her as the prisoner. I didn’t see the twist coming and I really enjoyed that.
The first half of the book had me hooked. Amelie, locked up, blindfolded, no idea where she is and why.
However, the more I learned about her past, marriage of convenience, and the turns the story took in the past and present timeline, the more I lost interest.
The Prisoner by B.A.Paris is a psychological thriller that dives into the mind of a woman held prisoner first by the man she was dubbed into marrying and then by a duo of kidnappers. This is my first novel by B.A. Paris I have read and had high hopes. This was an easy and quick read but it fell a little short for me.
Things I liked:
I liked the duel stories. Part 1 flashes back and forth between the present (the kidnapping) and the past (how Amelie ended up where she is). Part 2 is the fallout and how Amelie deals with the trauma of the kidnapping. Part 1 is fast paced and examines the mindset of a woman held captive in a pitch black room. I also enjoyed Amelie’s backstory. Her mother dies early in life and when her father dies after an illness, Amelie finds herself alone and broke. She lives on the streets and in hostels but finds Carolyn who hires her as a housekeeper/cook and gives her a family of women.
Things I didn’t like:
Part 2 - the outcome. The ending really fell flat for me. It seemed a bit like a Law and Order episode where people just gave Amelie information and clues for no apparent reason. People were way too helpful and forthcoming. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a gifted copy.
This is my 3rd B.A. Paris book. I LOVED IT! 4 stars from me. It did not disappoint. Just like the book ‘Behind Closed Doors’ It starts with a bang and continues to be a page turner. With short chapters it was a non stop read for me. I think people will enjoy this book when it debuts on November 1, 2022.
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the egalley Arc of The Prisoner in exchange for an honest review.
It was all great until the end, I got so confused with the explanation. There was so much going on. The first part was addicting and I was hoping for an ending like most of BA Paris books but this one fell flat for me.
⭐️ARC REVIEW ⭐️ - The Prisoner by B.A. Paris
Rating: 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Release Date: Nov. 1, 2022
*Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review!*
Okay, listen, I thought all day about what I would rate this. First, the book kept me entertained, I needed to see where this was all going.
Second, I love kidnapper tropes, so that was a win!
What I didn't like was that it all felt a little too simple? And the end I was just kind of like, "....well, alright then." And even at some points I was like, "JUST GET ON WITH IT." Soooo....
Would I recommend you read it? Sure. It's a super simple, quick-ish read. The chapters are short and it does keep your attention!
