I found the motherhood aspects of this story really relatable - loved the loneliness and the allure of strangers who βunderstandβ on the internet aspects. The sleep deprived states of motherhood, the fluctuating hormones and the dire need for someone to empathise with you. But it also highlights the danger of our online culture and these personas people put out there to the world.
It was fast paced and I just didnβt want to put it down, the end of each chapter left me needing to know more. The now and then timelines worked flawlessly together and the certain parts I thought were something and ended up being something else entirely (trying to not give away any spoilers) - had me shook!!
The twists were plentiful and clever, each revealing a bit more of the plot and sending you in a spin to where things were going. Every time I managed to guess a bit, something else would happen to make my theory not quite right - and I loved it!! Can we also just mention that epilogue?! I need more!
I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend it!! If you enjoy a twisty, domestic thriller - this is one for you! Itβs my first read of Sophie Flynnβs but definitely wonβt be my last!
This one was disturbingly good. Itβs the type of book that really makes you think about what would happen to you in those scenarios.
Thank you NetGalley and Hera publishing for an ARC copy of Keep Them Close!
3.5 stars rounded to 4. Despite the fact that I am not a fan of an unreliable narrator, I enjoyed this book! The storyline felt a little slow and predictable, but overall kept me reading and wrapped up nicely!
Well i know this was written well as the amount of frustration i felt for the main character Emily was out of this world. I had to put it down a couple of times to breathe through the overwhelming rage that overtook me when the other characters surrounding her did/said the things they did. It is very relatable!!
Emily is a mother and when becoming one joined an online forum to discuss the trials and tribulations with others like her. But it all takes a sinister turn.
I myself have children and was also part of a mum's online forum many years ago now. Ten years later i am still friends with people i met on there. This book was triggering because it made me think back to all the women who overshared.
Over all yes, give it a read for the twists and turns alone.
Absolutely loved this book! I predicted one of the main mysteries but at other times I had no idea what's next. Very engrossing, detailed and realistic thriller - which makes it even scarier. Would recommend this to all thriller lovers, especially to fans of Colleen Hoover's Verity and Audrey Audrain's The Push.
Gripping. Compelling. Riveting. Mind Blowing. Spine-Chilling. Page Turner. Engrossing. I am out of words to describe this marvelous masterpiece of a psychological thriller. Wow!
Emily shared her dark secrets with a stranger on internet forum MumsOnline. She was going through a bout of post natal depression and found a friend in TwoIsTrouble. Both the ladies/moms got chatting - they had so much in common - both were mother of twins. As their 'friendship' grew, Emily shared a secret that she shouldn't have.
Emily deleted her MumsOnline account and the stalking began. TwoIsTrouble found her on Facebook. When she blocked them there, they found her on another...
The stalking episodes kept me on the edge of my seat. It's not just online stalking, you see. TwoIsTrouble starts to interfere in Emily's day-to-day life and there's nothing that Emily can do. I really felt bad for Emily's dilemma. The poor thing was helpless at times.
The story alternates between NOW and THEN. While the past is about writings in a diary, the present deals with Emily's ongoing predicament. It becomes clear that someone's out there, wanting to destroy Emily for telling them her secret.
The last few chapters blew my mind. The finale - the revelation of Emily's dark secret and the identity of the stalker. The ending was a huge shocker. I did not see it coming and it certainly left me guessing what might happen next.
Sophie Flynn is a master storyteller. Excellent storytelling. Mind blowing twists. Tension and suspense at an all-time high. I was hooked on to the story and could not put it down until the end. This book highlights mental health issues such as post-natal depression and what happens when it goes untreated.
Keep Them Close by Sophie Flynn is one of the best psychological thrillers I have ever read. If you are looking for a gripping read, I highly recommend you to give this book a try.
An overwhelmed mom of preschooler twins connects with a stranger on an internet mommy forum and confides her darkest secrets. When she attempts to sever her connection her confidant begins stalking her and threatens to reveal all her confidences. This is suspenseful and twisty, and the main character is a perfect combination of sympathetic and unreliable so you want things to work out for her but don't entirely trust her version of events.
5 Stars
Wow what a gripping thriller.
It really highlighted the dangers of online forums and messaging people who you've never met in person, who in fact could be everyone. The way the book was written made me question everything and kept me guessing.
The main character Emily was easy to relate to in the beginning, with all the tales of her life as a working mum but the story got darker as it went on.
The story took several twists and turns and I developed several theories of how I thought things might turn out.
I shall definitely be reading Sophie Flynn's previous book and shall look out for any future ones as well.
Emily loves her four year old twins, and feels blessed. However she's tired, and has had a really rough year. To cope, she reached out to a mums group online, and bonded with a person on there, someone who understood Emily. Emily told them her deepest secrets, the ones that would destroy her life if they came out. Now that same person has found out who Emily is, and they are determined to broadcast Emily's secrets.
This is one of those fantastic stories with the 'Internet posts' splitting the story up, so it makes it such an easy, flowing read. The story builds slowly to increase the impact, really making the reader desperate to find out the secrets. Emily doesn't really help herself within the story, some of her actions are definitely questionable.
Brilliant story that had me gripped the whole way through!
This was actually a really good psychological thriller I have read!
Emily has recently given birth to twin girls, Ella and Lara. Just like any typical Moms, she is dealing with all the things that Moms are doing and soon she joins an online forum, for the Moms. There she meets a stranger with a user name Two Is Trouble and soon she gets involved in the forum. Soon, she realizes that after she shared a dark secret, someone was stalking her...
The story is told mainly from Emily's perspective, which in my opinion is an unreliable character--which is normally a good thing in nowadays psychological thrillers. As reader, do you trust Emily, do you believe her or do you think Emily is insane? So I like how the author created that scenario as well. We also see that someone is really out to ruin Emily's life and as a reader, we wonder, what that dark secret. The ending was what actually blew me away when the secret is finally unraveled and the ending itself was totally unexpected which completely blew my mind away.
If you like a psychological thriller that will put on the edge of the seat, then this book is one for you--worth five stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Hera for ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Quick and engaging read. Easy for readers to relate to in this day and age where communicating online with people we don't know is commonplace- especially for moms who need support and feel alone. Proof of the risks that we never know who we are the communicating with. It was easy to feel the emotions of the Mom througout the story- I felt that the characters and storyline was well developed.
I made the mistake of thinking this books archive date was after the publishing date like most books do. I did not get to read it before it archived.
When Emily shares her secrets on a mumβs online forum she lives to regret it when she becomes plagued with a stalker. With being a mother of twin girls she also worried about their safety as well, but the stalker wonβt leave her alone and increases the pressure on Emily to come clean of what she has did many years ago and she is keeping secrets from her husband as well.Itβs a good physiological thriller that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre, that said it didnβt quite keep me gripped like other books do,but itβs a good a 4 star read.
This book was amazing! Everything a modern day thriller should be. I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved the suspense! 5 stars!
This book was amazing it had characters that I love and right from the beginning it grabbed my interest. I love how there was no soft build up to all of the mystery it was like the author just threw you in sink or swim Style and it worked. This book is all about our main character Emily who feels overwhelmed when she gives birth to twin girls. Not sure how to cope she joined the mom's Forum online to help her cope, meet twin spirit, and also unload her deepest secrets, secret she doesn't even share with those around her. Things are going great but it isn't until Emily gets contacted by a member of The Forum when she decides to quit and go back to a normal life that things really blow up. This person knows all of Emily's darkest Secrets both personal and professional and will stop at nothing to ruin her life as well as her relationship. I loved how this book was told you Emily's point of view because you could really feel the terror of what was happening but the compulsion to figure out who was behind it at the same time. The ending was nothing I could have ever seen coming. This book will have you both on the edge of your seat and gasping for air unable to get enough. I'm very glad I got the chance to read this novel and I can't wait to see what this other comes out with next.
Loved it! It's not the most fast paced but it does an amazing job or slowly elevating the unsettling, tense atmosphere and really getting under your skin. I can't say the big reveal was a surprise, it was quite obvious early on but that didn't take any of the enjoyment out of the book. The characters are well written and relatable. The plot of oversharing in the Internet is also quite relatable in this day and age, as is the struggles and conflicts felt by mums. It's actually quite a compelling story and it really does have you empathising with the main character, whilst also understanding the motivations behind the jther characters who are also just trying to do the best they can with the information they have. A well written clever domestic noir. Highly recommend
I was immediately hooked. A fast paced, effortlessly quick read where the pages just turned themselves and I was engaged throughout, mission accomplished. An current social media Whirlwind of a thriller! I loved it.
Excellent thriller of the modern era, putting the internet and social media in the bad guy's seat. An innocent mommy group turns into a case of stalking. So twisty and fast paced.
I love it. A compelling story of what social media can do to a person. Details of what we share and who to trust. There is sensitivity in regards to mental health issues. Definitely recommend.
