So I would start by saying what stood out for me in this book was the characters. The characters were great, really endearing and engaging. And as a result, the enemies to lover situation worked out pretty well.
The other side of it for me is it was very formulaic. A lot of these types of romance books are being churned out recently and I just felt like I've read this before.
The narrator was great.
This whole trilogy of novels has been so good and so fun to read! I love the way these ladies all came together and that they continue to be such good friends (it's so hard to make friends as adults these days, I swear!). I really enjoyed this high school "enemies" to lovers. I enjoyed the plot and the side plot and I liked how they didn't have a typical falling out at the end. I did feel like Drew could have been a little more flushed out as a character and I think his side plots weren't nearly as strong as London's but it was still a great story for the last of the friend trio.
Also, I thought Marissa Hampton did a wonderful job narrating. I do wish there was a second narrator for Drew's part but that's a nitpick on my end because I think it brings more life into the audiobook for romances when there's separate narrators for both POVs.
A delightful conclusion to this trio of friends. London needs to chill, and Drew is the just the man to help her do that. She is a complete workaholic and you can see why in the pact she made with her friends hers was to find a hobby. Drew complimented London nicely and I appreciated that he wanted her to relax, but also understood what was important to her and why and never expected her to compromise her values.
Again the trio of friends really shines through. Samiah and Taylor call London on her BS, without being awful about it and despite not knowing each other for very long they have a strong bond. London also spends some time bonding with her half siblings and she grew in this area a lot.
If you take snark of The Hating Game , the second chance at love from Love and Other Words, and the date scenes that rival The Bachelor, you may come close to how amazing The Hookup Plan is , I was beyond surprised. Huge t hank you to #netgalley @hachetteaudio and @farrahrochon for my gifted copy.
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
There is a lot to unpack with this book, and I was there for it all.
London Kelly felt like she stepped right off the set of Grey's Anatomy ; if Miranda Bailey and Arizona Robbins mixed their characters in a perfect blend London would be created. Pediatric surgeon finishing her residency somewhat of a humble superstar she loves her job. Opening chapters she crosses paths with Drew Sullivan her nemesis from high-school at their 15 year reunion. Over achievers Drew always had a hidden crush on London, but she never forgave him for stealing her thunder and being her Co Valdictorian. Drew also was in town to audit her hospital..remember when that happened in Grey's Anatomy and doctors were worried about keeping their jobs? Well ..Drew failed to tell London. He could have. He had plenty of time too., but their vibe after the reunion was so charged... hmmm he ommited that detail.
After a few days of the Hookup Plan that the two devised as rules to keep things not serious, It was clear that the two had a beautiful relationship growing.
Drew really listened.
Drew was present and always made himself available.
He thought about Londons needs..and honestly I was falling in love with him half way through the book. It all was so easy, fun and exactly what her doctor ordered.
The book takes a deep dive into childhood trauma, dealing with a narcissistic parent, the death of a parent and how hard it is to pack up their home. It takes a view of a resident making a choice at the crossroads of their life. London stood up to her father and that to me was just as important as any other scene in the book. She told him what she felt and didn't allow him to gaslight her which with a parent is extremely hard., or any loved one. I loved London's scenes with her half siblings and the role model she wanted to be to her younger sisters. And then there were her best friends...who we met in book 1 and 2..which I haven't read but now I definitely want to! Three women , independent and getting close to the most successful years of their lives , spending time together was as important as going on dates with their sexy amazing men. I loved the sisterhood they shared, and I was so hungry after their dinner nights together! If you haven't read check out the trilogy! Did I also mention the steam?? 🌶🌶🌶 rivals Tessa Bailey It Happened One Summer!!!
I didn’t love the last book but I also loved this character the most out of all of them so I was excited to read her story! What a sassy independent QUEEEEEN! 110% recommend. My fav in this series
What a great end to the Boyfriend Project series! Drew is the perfect match for London’s signature intensity. It was interesting to see a glimpse of how modern healthcare works from both a medical and financial perspective.
We finally get to see London’s weird family dynamic in all its glory in this book. London no longer wastes her time or energy on her self-absorbed father, but she does make an effort to spend time with her stepmom and three much-younger siblings. Also, her mom and stepmom are best friends. The scenes with (most) of her family are simultaneously awkward and heartwarming and I’m totally here for it.
I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Marissa Hampton. I love that each of the audiobooks in the series has its own narrator. It really helped me see Samiah, Taylor, and London as their own individual characters, especially because each narrator did an amazing job capturing their heroine’s personality.
A Perfect Read
I preordered Book 1 in this trilogy The Boyfriend Project… and put it on my physical TBR and haven’t read it yet. I bought a copy of book 2 The Dating Playbook and did the same thing… twice! (I’m going to give a copy to my sister) but when I was offered a copy of The Hookup Plan on audio I leapt at the chance to review it because it’s my FAVORITE trope (enemies to lovers for the win!)
Successful pediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. A night of fun with no strings. But no one—least of all London—expected it to go down at her high school reunion with Drew Sullivan, millionaire, owner of delicious abs, and oh yes, her archnemesis.
More drama ensues when London finds out Drew is ACTUALLY in town to look into whether the best course of action is to keep the hospital where London works publicly funded or to take it private.
This was a fabulous rom-com with the perfect balance of spice and laughs and I loved every minute of it. I laughed out loud several times (this never looks weird when you’re driving in your car by yourself right?) and every time I’d start to think it had been a little while since the last “on page” spicy scene another one… popped up… to keep my interest piqued.
This was among my top rom-coms I’ve read this year and it has catapulted the first two books in the series up my TBR as I can’t wait to find out how London’s besties met their matches in their own books. I’ve discovered I love Farrah Rochon’s writer’s voice and style and any more books of hers are going on my instant “add to cart” list.
If you’re looking for a delightful enemies-to-lovers rom-com with heart this is the perfect book for you!
Happy pub week to this one!
London, a resident pediatric surgeon, is trying to save her county hospital from budgeting issues. She meets up with her high school nemesis, Drew, for a weekend of stress relief between the sheets with no strings attached and the hope of not seeing him again. Of course Drew ends up leading the financial team deciding on the budget cuts at the same hospital.
Book three of this series did not disappoint. Full of steam and entertaining in enemies to lovers romcom fashion. This can easily be read as a stand alone but features the trio of fast friends, London, Taylor and Somiah who initially met while dating the same man. I loved the strong friendships and STEM representation in this one.
Thank you to @netgalley and @hachetteaudio for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book so much! Farrah Rochon did fantastic job with this series, and I love how this ended by closing the loop on all three characters. London and Drew, the main focus of this book, went through an enemy to lover trope that I just couldn't put down. I would highly recommend the whole series and of course, this book.
I also listened to the audiobook, and I really enjoyed the narrator. Marissa Hampton does a great job with voice fluctuation and variation of voice, I was easily able to distinguish the different characters.
Thank you @readforeverpub for the gifted finished copy and @hachette.audio for the gifted ALC!
I’ve enjoyed this series, and was so excited to read London and Drew’s story! THE HOOKUP PLAN features an enemies-to-lovers romance with plenty of steam.
It was so fun to see high school rivals reunite as they reconnect at a high school reunion and decide to hookup at the end of the night. That angsty chemistry was off the charts, and I loved their competitive banter.
Not only was this a fun, sexy romp of a romance, but I loved that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as each character had plenty of challenges that they are trying to overcome. Drew with the emotions following the death of his Mom, and London as she tries to finish her residency while dealing with the complicated relationship with her Father.
It was so refreshing to see a strong female friendship featured with the women that London is surrounded by, as they cheer each other on and really love and support one another.
I listened to the audiobook ALC and really enjoyed it!
*many thanks to Forever/Hachette Audio and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
Thank you so much to the author, publisher, narrator and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio version of this title for my review.
I read the first book in this series when it was released, but missed book 2. Moving on to this book, #3, I didn't have any trouble following along, so I think it would work fine for a stand alone.
This was London's story, and I have to say, overall, I really enjoy her as a character. Her work as a pediatric surgeon and her feelings towards her patients, her caring for their families, even to the detriment of her own health, is amazing and I love to read stories with characters like hers.
Her rivalry with Drew was cute, but it did get to be rather repetitious. I mean, how many times do you really need to talk about how much you hated someone from high school? But this was enemies to lovers, so maybe that is part of the formula.
Something I was not ready for was the sex and sex talk. I don't usually read books with that sort of story line, so it was a bit much to listen to. That's just me, though.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, I liked the characters and the writing. The narration was very good (though shouldn't' they have had a Texas accent? Maybe). For those who enjoy romance and steamy books, I would recommend without a second thought, and will look for this author's books in the future as well.
4 stars for "really enjoyed it" (I reserve 5 stars for books I think I would read again.)
2🌟s It Was Okay
This book had everything I love in a rom-com.
-Good Writing
-Equally amazing audiobook narrator
- Funny banter
- A really nice hero who was SECRETLY PINING FOR THE GIRL FOR YEARS! 🥺
But all lost to the annoying female protag- London. It was really frustrating to follow London. She works really hard, which I love to see in my rom-coms. However, she was really struggling with controlling things around her. I wonder how she chose to become a Pediatrician with such control issues lol. All I have to say is that Drew deserved better!
This entire series brings me so much joy! I love the friendship between these three women, so it's always nice to get scenes of them together. The epilogue was so sweet!
I already knew that I loved London and this book confirmed that for me. She reminds me of some of my closest friends and I have a soft spot for her. I also thought that the chemistry she had with Drew was off the charts!
Farrah Rochon has a special way of creating characters who have relatable back stories. I think a lot of readers will see themselves in London, especially when it comes to the complicated relationship she has with her father.
This was the perfect way to write a rivals to lovers story! My only small gripe is that I wanted more from the smutty scenes.
This is the first book by the author that I've read and the writing style hooked me. In addition to that, the narrator's voice was very pleasant and calming to listen to that I thoroughly enjoyed the listening experience with this book. My only critique is that I find the macroplot about the sensory room for the hospital situation to be much more interesting to follow instead of the romance between London and Drew. I feel like the external plots (i.e. the hospital, London's narcissist father and her daddy issues, and Drew and his grief) have much more depth and spotlight compared to the actual progress from hookup to actual relationship of our main characters. There's also no steam in this one like every time they have sex it was always just alluded to it. The good thing is that our MCs are compelling enough that I really don't mind the lack of steam in this book.
I also wanted to add that I appreciate how this book ended not redeeming London's trash ass father because that's reality. In real life, not everyone can and should be redeemed. I was scared for a moment near the end thinking he might get redeemed despite his horrible actions and lack of remorse over the effects it had on his daughters, but thank the Lord that didn't happen. Last thing I wanted to add is how annoying London is that time when Drew will basically sponsor the sensory room for the hospital and I was like, girl lower that pride and just accept it. It isn't for your prideful ass, it's for the patients. Stop making everything about you. Good thing she was able to knock that pride down as we got to the end of the book.
Overall, this just made me excited to read the first two books in this trilogy because the friendships between the three women were so adorable and I just wanted to read from all of their perspectives.
All the things I loved about this book.
Enemies to lovers trope.
Strong ambitious female lead.
He falls first.
Cute friendship group.
Steamy bits
Complicated family story.
The cover.
This book literally had all the ingredients and Farrah Richon put them all together and made a beautiful story.
The Hookup Plan is a contemporary enemies-to-lovers romance by Farrah Rochon. It's the third book in The Boyfriend Project series, though it's enjoyable as a standalone! The ebook version is 401 pages. I listened to the audiobook, which clocks in at a little over ten hours and is narrated by Marissa Hampton. We follow our two main characters with third-person points-of-view.
London Kelley is a badass pediatric surgeon who needs to find balance in her life and reduce her stress levels so her pre-hypertension does not become the full-on disorder. Her best friends Samiah and Taylor (both of whom were featured in the first two books in this series) think what the doctor ordered is a fun and frivolous, casual hookup. London is game, but doesn't expect it to happen after her 15-year high school reunion with with her enemy and co-valedictorian Drew Sullivan.
Said arch nemesis is a sexy millionaire with amazing abs and lots of skills in the bedroom. But then she finds out that he's really back in their hometown to decide whether the hospital in which she works should be sold. Drew wants her to realize that he's actually a good dude whose heart is in the right place, but London is too afraid of catching feelings to really believe him.
This was a cute book! This is the rare series where I jumped in on book three and haven't yet read the first two, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. I love modern romance series like that! I'm absolutely going to go back and read the other two books. Both of our main characters grew a lot throughout this book and all the while assisted each other in doing so.
I really enjoyed the narrator. Hampton did a great job with distinct voices which made it easy for me to figure out which character was "talking." I enjoyed her pacing, which was especially great at the more comedic scenes. She also did a great job with the steamy ones as well.
Speaking of steamy scenes, the first two are fade-to-black so I was wondering if the whole book would lean that way, but don't worry reader, there are definitely lots of exploits on-page. They're all pretty straight-forward with little foreplay, though so your mileage may vary.
Tropes in this book include: enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, witty banter
CW: neglect by parent, narcissistic parent, emotional abuse, gaslighting, cancer, death of a parent (off-page, referenced), sexism
This is book three in The Boyfriend Project series, and while you could read it as a stand-alone I definitely recommend reading all these books in order if you can. They are so much fun - with witty banter, gorgeous men and lots of spice, and well developed female main characters that are smart, strong, and loyal to the amazing friendship that they built as the result of a very unusual situation!
While I loved all three books, London & Drew’s story in The Hookup Plan was my absolute favorite. When I tell you I couldn’t put it down, I mean it! I love the enemies-to-lovers trope and this one brought the humor and lighthearted fun of a romance balanced with really well developed characters, strong friendships, and unresolved family issues. You will want to be besties with London by the time you finish reading, and will be sad to finish reading. I loved the representation of a successful and gorgeous Black woman in STEM (London is a renowned surgical resident!) who finds love and joy in her own decisions.
Seriously, grab this book (or the audiobook - I listened to it as well and Marissa Hampton is an incredible narrator! - and throw it in your beach bag for this weekend, you won’t regret it! Thanks to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for your generous gifts of the finished copy, the ARC, and the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was adorable! I just finished listening to it on netgalley and am so glad I did! It's a truly cute and inspiring romcom with successful black characters. I love seeing different representation.
London is a pediatric surgeon with a stressful professional life and no personal life to speak of. Urged by her best friends, she seeks some stress relief by hooking up with Drew, her former archnemesis, at her high school reunion. Things get complicated when she learns his firm has been hired by her hospital to decide how to become more financially solid. Can she trust him to do the right thing when her future is in his hands?
London and Drew are fully fleshed characters dealing with major life decisions. They're fun and well-matched with tons of chemistry. This compelling story kept me guessing until the end. The audiobook added to the enjoyment of the novel.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Thanks so much to the publisher and netgalley for my e-arc of THE HOOKUP PLAN in exchange for an honest review! This book just published yesterday, August 2, 2022, so you can grab a copy now!
I have read all 3 books now in the boyfriend project trilogy by Farrah, and have really enjoyed all of them! I think my favourite part is the friendship all 3 women have with each other, despite not knowing each other very long! I also really love that we see each women either in STEM related jobs, a doctor, or a personal trainer! The kinds of jobs that once, women would never have had. I have listened to two of them, and have also loved the audio experience!
THE HOOKUP PLAN, was so fun! I loved the chemistry between London and Drew- it was there right from the beginning, and kept me “hooked.” I loved how both of them were focusing on overcoming their own emotional trauma, but were wholly focused on being the best they can be in in their chosen career path. While London is strong and independent, she learns that it’s okay to ask for help, and that taking breaks/ resting is beneficial for your overall health. I also really liked that Drew didn’t pursue a relationship with London UNTIL she had realized her feelings for him were beyond that of hooking up after work to destress form her high stress job. He had waited for her for 15 years, what’s a little infer right?
Also, there is no third act breakup 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I highly recommend reading this book! If you have read any other books in this trilogy, I recommend reading this one! They can be read out of order as well as they are all stand alone within the trilogy.
