Thank you to NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review. This review is wholly my own.
Melonie Johnson + Rom-Com = YES, PLEASE. With the combination of an author I adore and my favorite genre, especially in between tense thrillers, this was a no brainer and a must read for me!
Let's be honest, it's not a new storyline. We've seen the movies and read other books with the same premise of a woman having a checklist of the perfect guy only to find out that the perfect guy is someone who doesn't tick off every box on her checklist. She's going to agonize over this and over-analyze it and then they're going to end up together at the end. We all know this just by reading the synopsis and seeing it happen before. But ask me if I care. Nope! I'm just a sap for this type of story and because a lot of us just love these feel-good stories, we'll read them over and over again.
I was not disappointed at all. I enjoyed the characters and the plot (as just stated!). It was exactly what I expected, nothing more, nothing less.
I would definitely give it a read if you normally like this type of story. If you're looking for something 100% new and different and won't give it a fair chance otherwise, maybe stay away?
The main character has a goal to find her Mr. Perfect. Is there a real Mister Perfect? In this book I liked the way the characters communicate with each other, their dialogues, their thoughts, emotions towards each other. Here you can find the friends-to-lovers trope and if you like it, you will enjoy this book. I really love this graphic cover! It is gorgeous. I like this book, but I can't say that I enjoyed reading it. The main character considered herself the best girl and the fact that she needed the most ideal guy she could find. She is bossy, and it was precisely these traits in the character of the main character that I did not like, so I gave this rating. The main characters had to change themselves to be together and it was interesting. This is a good love story for those who love the friends-to-lovers and strong main characters. Thanks to the author for this good love story.
The book seriously had me at pet hedgehog, how much cuter could this book get you may ask. MUCH. I absolutely adored the meet-cute and I think it is in one of my top 10 favorites. Post-breakup Kat decides she needs to make a list of Mr. Perfect qualities and find him. Enter Mick who is exactly the opposite of Mr. Right, but Kat is enchanted by him. The two become close friends, despite there being a lot of chemistry brewing between them.
Kat was definitely the type of character that needed to grow on me, especially since her post-breakup activity was seeking a perfect man who is completely opposite her type. She just was annoying because she was so unkind to Mick for no reason sometimes and I feel like he deserved more than that. But one of the qualities I adore most about Kat was how hardworking she was and her passion for having her own business one day.
Also, I must big the biggest thanks to Melonie Johnson for making this a dual-pov book because it's exactly what it needed, especially with being able to see where Mick was coming from. On the topic of Mick, I loved him. He is literally a ray of sunshine. The banter him and Kat had kept me laughing and engaged in the book. It also was really interesting to see the interworking of a funeral home because I feel like it was so obscure lol. Big thanks to net galley for an ARC copy!
This one was just ok for me I didn't really connect with either of the main characters. To be honest there really wasn't any characters in the book I felt all that connected to. The story was fine had a cure premise florist and funeral home owner having a meet cute but the relationship moved forward fast and felt a little forced at times and if they had any kind of conversation about what the other wanted the central conflict would've been cleared in less than 100 pages. This book just didn't do it for me but it was written well and still had some enjoyable moments. I want to thank Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
A romantic comedy where the main characters meet in a funeral home? Sold.
I read Too Good to be Real and was excited for Too Wrong to be Right. Like the first book, we get a unique premise, some quirky side characters, lots of funny moments, and super cute animals. But instead of an insta-love story, this one is much more of a slow burn. I really enjoyed watching Kat and Mick fall for each other - which often literally included falling - ha. I did find the way they held back their thoughts and fought their feelings incredibly frustrating, like I wanted to shout at both of them, but it also made total sense for their characters, Kat's trying not to keep going after guys she's attracted to on a physical level, so of course she's going to push Mick away - and Mick, um, he is definitely more of a beta and not one to go after what he wants, not with Kat or his family. He was so sweet though and eventually started to get a clue even if it took his sister to basically shove him in the right direction. I laughed a lot and smiled at the end. Just what I want from a rom-com.
Shout out to the grandmas in the story. They need their own podcast.
Thank you for letting me read this arc. I was hooked from the moment the crochet penis was seen on the shop floor! I would come back and read this book again. The characters were great and so was the vibe. Looking forward to finding more reads from this Author!
I want to start by saying that I adored Melonie Johnson's book 'Too Good to be Real" and that is why I picked this one up without even reading the blurb. But I am sorry to say I was disappointed by this book.
Reason number 1: I did not like Kat one bit. I felt myself getting annoyed with her and the decisions she was making.
Reason number 2: There was little to no character or plot development. Kat's pursuit to find the perfect man became old very fast.
Thank you NetGalley for providing an arc.
This was a cute rom com book. The plot followed your average romantic storyline so it was predictable, but I liked how Mick was a mortician and they found love by a funeral flower delivery. Seamus was my favorite characters. For this having a hedgehog mentioned in the summary I was hoping for more interactions between the characters and Jojo, but it was still enjoyable.
This book was fine, but felt like I have read it before.
Kat and Mick were both 'fine' but unfortunately I found flaws with them both. They're first interaction was poor for both of them.
The supporting characters were enjoyable, but again I didn't LOVE any of them.
**There are lots of great reviews for this, so if the plot sounds like one you'd love, I would definitely still read it!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for an ARC digital copy of this book!
Overall it was a pretty cute read! I love rom coms and the fact that they found love over a literal dead body was a twist I wasn't expecting! The only downside is I struggled to connect with the characters and they fell in love pretty quick. I am still trying to figure out if I love the stranger, instant connection trope. I would have loved to see a little more pining after each other but overall it was a really quick, light and fluffy read!
If we could add decimal points to stats, I’d probably rate this book a 3.75, so I’m rounding up to 4 stars, which I probably would’ve done for the animal sidekicks alone. I think I’d love a hedgehog now after reading about JoJo. I don’t particularly like birds, but I’d definitely hang out with Seamus. They added so many little fun moments to the story. Moving onto the actual human characters. We’ll start with Kat. There were a lot of feelings Kat was experiencing that I could relate to with her friends, and though her reactions were different than my own, I could see where she was coming from. I wished she could recognize what a good place she was in even without a romantic partner, so I really enjoyed seeing her grow and take action toward owning her business on her terms. I thought Mick was great, and he felt like someone who really saw Kat and appreciated all of who she was. It became clear that he had some of his own self-awareness and self-sabotage issues, but his heart was in the right place.
Some other things I really loved: the interactions between Kat and Mick, particularly early in the book and as their friendship grew. It felt natural and genuine. There was also a lot of humor that made me legitimately laugh out loud. Special mention for Mr. Schwartz.
Something I didn’t love was Mick playing wingman to help Kat find her “Mr. Right”. Personal preference, this is never my favorite thing, but particularly when a sibling becomes involved. The inevitable lack of communication and denial of feelings while convincing themselves that they’re doing what’s best for the other never sits well with me. As things worked out, Kat and Mick both had a little issue with expecting the other to read their minds and it created more problems than if they’d just talked to each other.
Overall, while this was my first Melonie Johnson book, it won’t be my last. I’ll be going back to read Too Good to Be Real, which has been on my TBR for a while now.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eARC.
1. the book has convinced me I need a new pet 2. I fell in love with Kat! I was not familiar with the author prior but let me tell you this is now a must buy author for me and it should be for you too! This was the meet cute I had been craving this year and the perfect romance for anytime of the year!
This was cute! Sometimes it was too quirky for its own good, but it kept me interested. I look forward to more by this author
3 Stars Too Wrong to Be Right was a sweet, slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance. I loved the cover of this book when I saw it on NetGalley, but was a little disappointed with the story, mostly the ending. Kat and Mick’s banter was adorable and I loved their genuine connection and friendship. It was easy to see how their relationship would transition from friends to lovers because of the strong foundation they built first. The third act breakup was annoying and I thought both characters were acting a bit immature, especially since neither wanted to be the first to go to the other once they realized they were wrong. The ending wrapped up too quickly and I wish we had seen more of their HEA. The best part of this book was easily the pets; JoJo the hedgehog and Seamus the cockatoo.
I absolutely loved Smitten by the Brit & Once Upon a Bad Boy so I was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, this one just didn’t hit the mark for me like the other ones did. I just couldn’t stand Kat & Mick seemed like a pushover.
However, there was a ton of humor & great relationships between friends which is to be expected in a Melonie Johnson book.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first Melonie Johnson review but the beautiful cover caught my eye- who wouldn't be intrigued by the hedgehog and the cockatoo? In this book we meet Mick the middle child in a trio of siblings that own a funeral home and Kat the manager of a floral shop- queue the meet cute. Kat is dumped at the start of the book and swears off her usual type (jerks) and she then promptly meets Mick whom she assumes is exactly her previous type so she befriends him instead. Thus the story taking a stranger to friends to lovers story line. The representation in this book gets an A+ as there is a nonbinary character in Ronnie (we love to see them). I also loved the supporting characters in this book. All the family members had such character as well as the friends. Even the previously mentioned pets were such a joy to read and had such presence.
Mick is without a doubt the best part of this book. Him a Seamus were a close tie but as Seamus was a bird I untimely had to give it to Mick. The entire premise behind Kat trying to talk herself out dating Mick seemed wild to me because the only thing 'bad boy' ish that he did was wink at her. The man had a masters in Psychology and helped run his family business. For me this just added to me dislike of Kat because she seemed so unrelatable. Kat started the book off in a not great place but what solidified my opinion of her was that she stayed there the entire book. Nothing was ever good enough for her, she was always the victim and she was always worried that people in her life were having good things happen to them and she wasn't. Kat would have been exhausting in real life. I find this sometimes when reading romance that the MMC is written to hold all the weight of chemistry for the couple while the FMC just exists and thinks that this is enough. Kat literally accepts a date from this man's brother after acknowledging that there is no chemistry with him all because of a check list? I just found it so hard to feel any sympathy for Kat because so much of what she felt was 'wrong' in her life (read: being single) was very much because she was out there making some bad choices.
I noticed pretty quickly that the pacing of the book felt off as well. The characters seemed to spend a lot of time not on page together which if they were thinking or talking about one another would have been fine but as it was I just wasn't feeling any chemistry between them which was quite an accomplishment because Mick was such an amazing character. But by 50% I didn't really feel any pull to them ending up together.
There were also a few points that the writing got really confusing. Kat mentions knowledge of Mick that he never tells her on page which maybe he told her off but why have him do that? I felt like I had missed something so I was searching key words to look for that conversation. Then when the spicy scenes finally did come around I didn't even get a flutter of butterflies. It was somewhere between a medical textbook and a closed door romance in how it was written. I also did chuckle when after they did *some* stuff and kat was have an internal dialog about it in the next chapter she was calling it something entirely different. I don't know why that bothered me and I don't want to get too specific and get my account banned but it's almost like the spicy scene was edited but then the next chapter wasn't updated or something...
I did find some enjoyment out of a few of the characters however and for that it gets a 2/5 stars and 1.5/5 spice.
3.5 stars
Tropes: Strangers to lovers/friends to lovers
Two things I loved about the book. Firstly, I was drawn to this book because I am a sucker for the graphic covers and this one was gorgeous. Secondly, the description is a classic rom-com of wanting to find Mr. Right but wondering if he is right in front of you.
I really enjoyed meeting Kat and then the meet-cute between her and Mick and the friendship that they developed. I really did enjoy have both POV from the characters (always my favourite when I get to see what both characters are thinking/feeling), loved JoJo and Seamus, and I also enjoyed the slow burn.
One thing I found was that the last 20% felt rushed and I was very disappointed with that. There was growth for Kat and Mick but it seemed to be rushed over very fast.
Overall, I found it be a good rom-com with some good laughs.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
This was such an enjoyable read! I loved Kat & Mick and how their story unfolded for them. Loved his family and Babcia and how can we forget Seamus and little Jojo! I liked the humor and little references to rom-coms and the little domestic soft moments between Mick and Kat. Just truly lovely!
This was just so enjoyable and I’m so glad I got to read it. I would purchase the physical copy to have in my collection. I’m going to have to check out more from this author when I have the chance!
Thank you to Melonie Johnson and net galley for gifting me a copy of this book.
Personally I didn’t really love Kat and truly wasn’t able to connect with her on a deeper level like I normally do with characters. I thought she was just a little stuck up
The cover is what drew me in and it is very cute.
I knew it was doomed when I realized the book was written in third person. I get so confused about who’s talking and what is happening so I struggled to get through the book.
This story was so cute and heart warming! Kat gets dumped and has a meet-not-so-cute over a body in a coffin with Mick, an Irish cutie that values comfort over professional attire. Kat and Mick become friends, as she needs help finding Mr. Right, and she came prepared with a list. Lucky for her, Mick's brother Joe fits most of her criteria...so why is she feeling sparks with Mick?
I found Kat so relatable (not the drop dead gorgeous part, but the wanting to find her person part). She was watching her friends find their Mr. Rights and really wanting to be happy for them. After dating a string of less that great men, Kat vows that the next one will be the right one. She enlists Mick to help her as a wingman, but he starts to catch more than wingman feelings.
Pros:
- friends to lovers
- strong cultures (Irish & Polish)
- cute and sassy pets
