This is a delightful story featuring imagination, sharing, friendship and kindness. Elephant takes a walk under his green umbrella on a rainy day and along his journey he encounters Hedgehog, Cat, Bear and old Rabbit. They tell him that they have had personal exciting interactions and adventures with his umbrella. Really?
One claims it is a boat, another a tent, and another a flying machine, just to name a few. As the animals share their personal stories Elephant listens intently and then invites them to share his umbrella. His kind heart and generosity leads to long lasting friendships with the other animals.
The artwork with its muted colour pallet is spot on and the intriguing cover draws the reader into the story. I love how creative, imaginative and entertaining the book is.
"So, in the shade of the green umbrella, the Elephant, the Hedgehog, the Cat, the Bear, and the old Rabbit shared their stories, drank tea, planned adventures, and became fast friends."
I love this gentle, heartwarming book and I highly, highly recommend it.
An umbrella carrying elephant meets an entourage who all lay claim to a green umbrella. This whimsical book has beautiful pictures and a great story of a considerate elephant who listens to others who he meets.
Nice bedtime story for kids.
A cute story about how we can create community by sharing with one another. I did feel like it was a bit short and it ended a little abruptly, but a younger child likely won’t notice. I suspect my 3 year old niece would be puzzled, but she wouldn’t have minded when she was 2. The art is beautiful.
Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for this advanced reader’s copy!
What could be cuter than a large pink pig with a (less than large) green umbrella? The illustrations in this picture book are adorable and just so sweet. The story is imaginative and will be enjoyed by young children as they meet the animals and find out about the umbrella’s adventures. Children will be left with a new affection for their bumpershoots!
Many thanks to NetGalley and North South Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
This has to be one of the cutest stories I’ve read in awhile. I can imagine my kindergarten teacher friends using this book on a rainy day to come up with creative and imaginative things one could do with an umbrella.
This was a creative story allowing kids to imagine the different ways an everyday regular item can be turned into and used in a variety of ways. This book provides an awesome opportunity to discuss alternative ways kids could use an umbrella other than for shielding the rain. Various animals come to elephant asking for the umbrella back and each animal uses it for something different. It is cute and humorous. The one thing that throws the book off is when in the middle of the book elephant tells bear he is mistaken but then tells bear he used to “imagine” his own ways of using an umbrella. This took away from the magical humor of the book. Overall a cute book to add to a library to spark some creativity in a child’s mind.
A sweet and lovely story about adventures, imagination, friendship and generosity. The illustrations were gorgeous; I can't wait until this comes out so I can get it for my kids!
Sometimes I can tell that I will love a picture book from its cover. This is one of those books.
An Elephant is taking a walk when he comes across some other characters claiming that his umbrella is not simply an umbrella--it is a boat, a tend, a flying machine, a sword, a cane. Elephant shares his umbrella, and the friends he meets on the way share their own gifts in return.
The illustrations are adorable. The art style shows a lot of personality in each character. I particularly loved the scenes of the rain and the storm, but the images of the characters' stories are also so full of life and showcase the story and personality of the character.
The message of sharing and friendship is done in a sweet way, and even grown up readers will find themselves engaged in this story because of the beautiful illustrations.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Green Umbrella
4 Stars
This was a pretty enjoyable read. I love the cute illustrations and muted color palette. The adorable pink elephant on the cover made this a must read for the artwork alone. But I was delighted that the story was just as entertaining. Each animal took the green umbrella on an exciting adventure. The umbrella unites these critters in friendship and new adventures.
Overall, this is a really fantastic book. I'd recommend this book for creative and adventurous kiddos. It's a fun read that should hold your child's attention and spark their imagination. Thank you, NetGalley and North South Books, for an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
This is adorable. The illustrations are gorgeous. The story is two fold about being generous with what you have and also a look into perspectives. The green umbrella is different things for different people and its too cute
Elephant is taking a walk one rainy day with his beautiful green umbrella when along came Hedgehog claiming the umbrella is his boat. As the two stroll along, they meet Cat who claims the umbrella is his tent, Bear says it's his flying machine, and finally Rabbit insist the umbrella is his cane. As the animals each share their adventures with the green umbrella they discover something even more beautiful, friendship.
The Green Umbrella is sure to spark lots of conversation for young readers! Beautifully written and illustrated. A must add to your library shelves.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book! Below is my honest review.

❌ None
Would I recommend this book? Yes!
The Green Umbrella is a quick read, perfect for toddlers during storytime. Though it might be a little too short for a bedtime story.
The illustrations are just adorable and certainly reflects the illustrator's artistic capabilities. However, I would have liked the illustrations to be larger to highlight the different characters. Perhaps the final product will have the larger illustrations.
The story is cute and very imaginative. I loved how each character mentioned their use of the green umbrella -- a boat, a cane, and even a tent. Such creativity all wrapped up in an excellent package that also provides a life lesson in sharing. And a bonus is that there's a Spanish version! Five outstanding stars.
I received a digital ARC from NorthSouth Books. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
I love this imaginative tale! This would be a great storytime read, allowing for discussion about the different ways an umbrella can be used in play.
Very cute book that shows that a simple thing can become different things to many people. I do wish that at the end everyone had a umbrella of there own but that is just me. I would love to see everyone have a different color umbrella or something like that.
Wonderful story that is truly inspired by a child's imagination. One green umbrella with so many uses and stories attached to it. I enjoyed the flying bear the most.
Great book that had me smiling the entire time
This is a very sweet story. The elephant meets multiple different animals with great imaginations. My son specifically liked the hedgehog who thought the umbrella was his boat. The moral of the story is a great one and it was cute to see all the animals doing all of the activities together!
The illustrations are lovely and the flow of the story is perfect to keep young minds engaged!
I highly recommend!
What a cute arts. It's so colorful but the tone is just right. Not too dark. Not too vivid. Also the layout of this book is perfect
I love the cover of this book. The illustrations are beautiful. I like that they use darker colors, because a lot of kids books use bright colors, so this makes it different.
My only critique, is i think the font needs to be bigger
I am trying to find new books for my niece that was just born, and this is one I would definitely buy for her.
