I’m always game for a good book of poetry, especially when it conveys themes of self-help and empowerment. With each turning page, this is what we as the reader are granted and I am so appreciative of this reprieve in between the gruesome thrillers and horror flicks I am known to consume.
Melody Godfred has such a beautiful way with words and I truly believe there’s something in here for everyone. This is her complete works, containing both Self Love Poetry and The Shift, as well as a series of meditations at the end which I really enjoyed.
I love both of these collections, though I find that I identify more with the themes in Self Love Poetry. I also really love the narration, Melody’s voice just lends so much warmth to these poems and makes them that much more impactful.
Highly recommend this for anyone looking for some soothing, inspiring poetry!
Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I absolutely loved all the poems in Melody Godfred’s Self-Love Poetry for Thinkers and Feelers. I like the concept of having paired poems for the analytical side of the brain and the creative/emotional side of the brain. Godfred did a marvelous job narrating her audiobook, and I enjoyed getting to here the poems just the way she intended them to sound. The downside to listening to this in audiobook format is that it’s harder to tell where the breaks are between each poem to compare the thinking poems with their pair feeling poems. For that reason, I personally would rather have this book in physical format to go back and compare or reference the poems more easily. Regardless of which format you use, I highly recommend checking out this book of poetry! I have already bought a copy to give out at Christmas.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.
If you love poetry or like to have a book that you can pick up daily to reflect, please give it a read.
This collection of poems shows a lot of humanity and provides he reader with affirmations. There's a good combination of poems that are more frank in nature and provide little nuggets of wisdom while others are more abstract and romantic (romantic as in style not necessarily relationship focused). The narration flowed very well and was enjoyable; however, for full transparency, I do tend to prefer to read poetry than listen to it and that probably would have been my preference only for that reason.
I did really enjoy this one and would definitely give it another read. My personal favorite line from the book was "strength based on control is actually quite fragile." There were several moments in this collection that I just stopped and thought "wow, I really need to hear this some days."
What I didn't realize was that this book was a combined collection of one of the other poetry books available by Melody Godfred. Either way, its a great read. A hug in book form. Plus meditations at the end to keep you in that loving yourself mindset. Definitely recommend.
The author has an amazing way with weaving her words into magic.
She says everything that I am feeling and thinking.
I loved her as the narrator as well. To hear a poet's words from their mouth feels like a poetry reading in my car.
As a compilation of her works 'Self Love Poetry' and 'The Shift,'this is your one-stop-shop for Melody Godfred's poetry.
'Self Love Poetry' is a lovely little collection of just that— poetry and anecdotes encouraging both the author and her readers to let go of self doubt and embrace self love. At times generic and at times deeply personal, there is more than enough variety in this collection to resonate with a wide range of readers.
With Godfred pairing poems and anecdotes from before and after pandemic lockdowns in 'The Shift,' she poignantly illustrates hard truths we were all forced to examine and the beauty of the change that can come from uncomfortable reflection. Pandemic or no, this collection will speak to anyone going through a metamorphosis in their life. Be that a transition from high school to college, leaving your hometown, removing yourself from toxic relationships and environments, or even self-guided personal growth.
As with her individual works, this collection as an audiobook is narrated by Godfred herself and the content is all the better for it.
I loved this compilation of the author's work. It flowed so well. I also loved that the author narrated the audio. I had so many emotions while listening to this. The poems were so relatable. I really enjoyed this. Thank you to Netgalley for the audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Andrews McMeel Audio and the author, for the ALC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This audiobook is a collection of all of Melody Godfred beautiful poems, the Self love poetry followed by The Shift.
Self love poetry is exactly what the name suggests, all about self love and how it will transform your life. The most beautiful part of this audiobook is that the book was read by the author herself and the passion and emotion behind her words were perfectly visible. The last part of the book where the poetry was read out with nature sounds noted as for meditation was a treat. When you resonate with the words and the sounds soothe you, its like you are in a different plane of existence with just yourselves. In short, it was beautiful and fulfilling.
Shift is a beautiful collection of poems that shows the growth and shift in perception. The illustrations in the book adds to the words and brings magic to the pages. The poems are in pairs where the poet notes how she felt about certain aspects of life before the pandemic and now in the after.
As a reader the one thing that delights me is seeing development of character and this poetry collection is exactly that the before and after, the then and now. The poignant low flow ideas touched my heart and that is the beauty of poetry. I had read this as an ARC, and chose to also listen to this because it was read by the author herself and I don't regret it at all, nor will you.
When I say, you deserve your own love,
It might seem like I'm saying you've earned it,
But that's not what I'm saying at all,
You are entitled to it,
Your best most abundant love,
without lifting a finger,
without accomplishing one thing,
without being or doing a drop more,
than the day you were born.
