Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan is a book I purchased and will review once I am able to read in the physical form. A wonderful synopsis for a mature romance adult novel.
I kept hearing so many great things about this book so had to give this one a try this summer. Such a perfect beach read that follows Sam and Wyatt during their summers on Long Island as teenagers. They reunite 14 years later when she heads back to the small town to look at wedding venues with her new fiancé. I was completely hooked by this story and highly recommend to anyone.
A heartfelt second chance romance in the same vein as Every Summer After and The Summer I Turned Pretty sans the brotherly love triangle, perfect for the summer season!
I fell in love with Annabel Monaghan’s first book, Nora Goes Off Script, that I immediately requested this once it became available on NetGalley, and I’m thrilled that this did not disappoint.
Wyatt and Sam grew up spending their summers together in Long Island and eventually falling in love. For reasons beyond their control, they fell apart and went their separate ways with Wyatt breaking Sam’s heart in the process. They met years later when she comes back to check out wedding venues at the same time he is also staying in his summer home. Old feelings and memories are brought back forcing Sam to revisit the changes she’d undergone and finally make that choice on how to move forward.
I’m such a sucker for second chance romances (my top trope obviously, HA!) that I don’t think I’m going to give them up anytime soon. This book is no different. I love the feeling of nostalgia this book has brought me. Wyatt and Sam’s reactions to the reason for their fallout was convincing for their age and I didn’t even blame them for what happened. How I wish I could’ve seen more from his point of view especially during the ‘present’ time.
An overall satisfying escapist summer read!
Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons, NetGalley and the author for my copy. All opinions are honest and my own.
Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan
I may not have a beach house on Long Island, but just like Sam and Wyatt, summer is when I am most relaxed and myself and I channeled all of those vaca vibes throughout this read. If you ask me, it’s also the perfect time of year for a rom-com set amidst the ocean waves and sandy beaches. You’ll be able to smell the salty air and feel the grit of sand on your skin in this one.
Sam and Wyatt grew up as children vacationing each summer in LI and eventually their friendship turned into more. This first love seemed unbreakable, until it broke.
After 14 years without talking to or seeing Wyatt and staying away from LI, Sam is back at the beach looking at wedding venues for her upcoming nuptials to Jack, but guess who is also at the beach? Matthew McConaughey to her Kate Hudson. Well that’s who would have been there if this had been turned into a movie 20 years ago.
Rom-coms are the Shirley Temples of books; sweet and syrupy and predictably bubbly and refreshing if you are in the mood for something light that leaves you without a hangover that your teenager can enjoy too. I loved her debut Nora Goes Off Script and if she would like to pen another one for next July I’ll be sitting here on my porch ready for it…same time next summer.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc!
Sam has a perfectly safe life- she has a job she's good at and a fiancé, Jack, any woman would envy. When she brings him to her family's Long Island summer home, though, her past collides with her future. Fourteen years ago, Wyatt broke her heart after promising to love her forever. Now he's back and Sam has to decide who she really is deep down. I really enjoyed this one- it's a perfect summer read with the nostalgia of first love and the decisions we face as adults. This is my first time reading Annabel Monaghan, but I will definitely be looking at her backlist.
I honestly felt that Sam and Wyatt’s teenage love story could have been its own YA romance novel. I enjoyed this book, however I’ve never been a fan of musician main lead stories—thankfully it was more a side story and it made it so enjoyable I’m not sure I could have pictured Wyatt being anything other than in the music industry.
Their cute and innocent love was toothache sweet. It’s literally what you dream up of a perfect ending. Their road to their ending wasn’t smooth and it really touched upon teen angst and inability to cope with crippling depression and heartbreak. Thankfully they are able to figure out a path to individual happiness. Does Sam marry her fiancé Jack after rekindling her friend with her one true love Wyatt? You’ll have to read a copy to find out.
I liked this author’s first book, but I LOVED this one! Absolutely charming, emotional and heartwarming second chance love story. The characters were relatable and the conflict that pulled the main characters apart seemed believable. The beach setting was perfectly described and made me long for a vacation. This is one of the best romances I’ve read in a while and made the author an auto-buy for me.
DNF at 15%. I know second chance romances usually don’t work for me. I shouldn’t have gone for this one. But I loved the author’s previous book so much I went in with hope. Unfortunately it still wasn’t for me. Thank you to the publisher, Netgalley and PRH audio for the free ebook and audiobook.
There's just something about Annabel's writing! I LOVED Nora Goes Off Script, it was one of my favorite books last year so I was super excited to read her latest work. Wyatt and Sam's story from childhood friends to lovers was a page turner! I'm not usually a fan of the back and forth timelines but it worked in this sense so that I could understand their thinking - I love a friends to lovers AND second chance trope so this was right up my alley. Can't wait to see what Annabel Monaghan comes up with next!!
I absolutely loved this novel. The setting, the characters, the plot - they all combined perfectly to make a delightful summer read. I will definitely be reading more of Annabel Monaghan's books. This is perfect for fans of last summer's darling Every Summer After.
This is the perfect summer beach/pool read! I rate it 5 out of 5 stars! It definitely reminds me of “Every Summer After”, but honestly I loved this one more! I love this author, and she always delivers! Read this book, you won’t regret it!
"Same Time Next Summer" is a delightfully warm, light beach read.
A classic case of an engaged woman who encounters an old love, the lead character Sam visit her old beach house to appease her parents' wish that she get married there, rather than the upscale downtown spot she and her doctor fiancé, Jack, have chosen. When they arrive, she's horrified to discover that her old love Wyatt, the one who broke her heart, is at his home next door, seemingly not have moved forward from his high school work in a garage while spending his off time messing around on a guitar.
Sam is surprised that her feelings for Wyatt rapidly create ambivalence about her fiancé, who she sees with new eyes. After all, does it really seem like Jack sees the real Sam, or do they stay together because Sam consistently capitulates in the name of feeling safe?
A cast of quirky and engaging characters, a lovely setting, and the dream of true love combine to create a story that's hard to put down.
Perfection. I love Annabel Monaghan’s books so much. I’m in. I’m a lifer. Perfect swoony summer read.
I wanted to give this author another try because so many enjoy it. Something about the storytelling just doesn’t make me feel a part of the story emotionally. I think third person pov combined with a telling vs showing style of writing. As a reader I just feel removed from the feelings. The plot is a great one for summer though.
I absolutely LOVED Nora Goes Off Script and was so excited for Same Time Next Summer. I did enjoy it, but it was not quite what I was hoping for. I think my expectations were a bit too high. However, it's still a great read and one that should definitely be on your TBR!

This read like The Summer I Turned Pretty for grownups, and I mean that as the highest of compliments. Big-hearted and joyful, even in sad moments, I absolutely could not put this down. It transported you right to the beach, with all the crashing waves, salt air, and ocean breezes playing vividly in your mind. This book deals Annabelle Monaghan as an auto-buy author for me.
Thank you NetGalley for ARC in exchange for review.
Same Time Next Summer was not an earth shattering read. Nor was it a cheesy bodice ripper. But it was a cute summer romance where young loves meet again in their 30s.
It's not hard to find the familiar formula here. You won't be surprised at the ending. But it's summer and this book is literally a summer read. Characters were cute - though it's hard to believe one of the main character's relationships was not based on any depth. If anything, I gained more insight from Sam's work life than anything else.
Recommend for a quick, light romance.
i was enchanted at first, by the ocean setting, by the characters of sam and her family - but it was just a little obvious a few chapters in how things were going to play out. i wasn't compelled to find out if i was right.
p.s. thanks to #netgalley for the ARC.
The perfect summer ready; while there was nothing original in the story the way Monaghan writes the story keeps the reader engaged. It came together a little too easily at the end, but on a beautiful summer day, it was a fun read.
Oh my goodness, I loved this book! The perfect summer read of second chance loves and finding yourself again. I absolutely loved the seaside setting and I never wanted it to end!
