Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan is a thoughtful beach read. Samantha has a predictable life in NYC, and he is engaged to a very predictable man. Her parents want her to come visit their summer home on Long Island, the one she visited every summer growing up with memories of her next door neighbor Wyatt all around her.
“There's something about the beach that changes the chemical component of everything around it.“
This second chance, summer, beach romance book was just the thing for me. The story moves between the present and past seamlessly. Samantha is the kind of character that you see a little of yourself in. She is desperately trying to keep all her plates spinning and wondering where the person she used to be has gone. I loved walking with her as she discovered who she was, and made peace with her past.
“Putting a person back together isn’t easy, but if you're smart about it you can reassemble yourself in a totally different, better way. Turn carefree into careful; bandage up your heart and double-check the adhesive. Bit by bit, I have left my childhood behind, replacing my impulsiveness with deliberate decisions and plans “
I loved the thoughtfulness of this story. The themes of second chances, family and becoming who you were meant to resonated with me. The story had some surprises and delivered a great ending. I am moving author Annabel Monaghan to auto buy as I also loved Nora Goes Off Script. I highly recommend it.
I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.
I loved Nora Goes Off Script and was super excited to get another book from Monaghan. I was prepared to have some fun, to be emotionally invested and feel super happy at the end. I got all three, but it started off a little slower and a little bit more disjointed than I expected. It could be that I have read so many books this spring with the now/then timeline structure. It could be that I wanted to know what happened quicker than she knew I needed to know. But if it hadn't been for the support of friends, i might have given up too soon and missed all of the goodness that was just past the 35% mark.
Wyatt and Sam have summered together their whole lives. They are neighbors at the beach and when they fall in love and break up as teens, it affects their whole adult lives. They happen to come across each other when she is back at her family's beach house to work on planning her wedding....and then everything happens.
Monaghan's books are quick and emotional and this one just feels like summer. It's going to be a book that you want to read in the sunshine by the pool or at the actual beach. It's filled with family and twists and turns and I am so glad that I read it.
I have to say I wanted to love this one more than I did. With that said, I did enjoy it. It just wasn’t what I was expecting, I think.
I did really love the characters and felt invested in them. I also felt good about the ending. Overall, a fun choice for a summer read.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I adored Nora Goes Off Script last year, so I jumped at the chance to read this one!
This was such a fun mix of beachy, coming of age, friends to lovers, second chance…
I loved the way the story moved in time from childhood to now. I loved all the family relationships and dynamics.
There were a couple little things I struggled with in terms of pacing/ how things played out, which kept this from being a 5 star… but I couldn’t put the book down and adored the resolution and lovely lovely ending.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the chance to review an advance copy.
Loved Nora Goes Off Script and was looking forward to this one. Was ok for me. Ended up skipping the flashbacks and only reading the Now sections. Was predictable and didn't really like the main woman(finished yesterday and literally can't remember her name) or her fiance. Woild have probably enjoyed the book more I'd they were likable characters. But finished it in a few days and loved Nora so much I will def read more by this author.
I loved Monaghan’s last novel, Nora Goes Off Script, so I was so excited to see she had a new book out. And she’s done it again!
Same Time Next Summer is the perfect summer read. Between the beach setting, characters that are easy to love, and the nostalgia-laced memories of what summer should feel like, this story is a satisfying, succulent read. Perfect for fans of Carly Fortune’s Every Summer After.
Special thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

I’m such a sucker for these summer time, first love, second chance romance books. I just love them and this one did not disappoint! I loved the friendship between Wyatt and Sam, and their connection was really heartwarming. I felt for them and just really rooted for them. I think there were elements to this story that felt really real, and raw. Like after a loss, Sam building a world where she felt safe makes sense. I liked that.
This part really stood out to me:
“He thought about being happy before, but it was usually in retrospect. This state of being happy and knowing it right in the moment was fascinating to him.”
I think (or at least) we’ve all felt this at one point in life when it all of a sudden hits you that you’re really happy. I just love it.
If you loved Every Summer After or The Summer I Turned Pretty, I think you’ll love this one.
Same Time Next Summer comes out on June 6th - it’ll be the perfect beach read. Thank you Putnam for the e-arc! You’re the best.
This was such a good *almost* summer read. I loved it. I loved the other book by Annabel Monaghan. This is a perfect beach read.
Sweet, nostalgic, hopeful, angsty, romantic... In many ways this novel has some of the same feels as last summer's Nora Goes Off Script, but presented in a fresh light with huge summer vibes (as is clear from the title).
I really enjoyed Same Time Next Summer, and gave it 4.5 stars. The half star off was for the plethora of YA-life flashback scenes that seemed over the top, and just more than necessary. The current timeline plot was great however, especially in the second half of the story. This novel just screams SUMMER and I loved that I was able to read most of it by the beach.
Highly recommend!
I was so pleased to get to read the new book by one of my favorite new to me authors! Same Time Next Summer is a great second time romance story about Sam and Wyatt. I did enjoy the way the story developed and loved how Sam realized who she really and finally allowed herself to be true to herself. I did think there are some holes in the story and that it was not quite all I was expecting. However, a very solid summer read and well worth the time! Excited to see what Annabel Monaghan writes next! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC for this review.
This book was just as addicting to read as Nora Goes off Script! @annabelmonaghan has a way of captivating her readers and making them fall in love with the characters every time.
Main character, Sam grew up spending each summer at Long Island with her family until she was 17. Now 14 years later, and a fiancé in the mix, Sam returned to Long Island for wedding prep only to find her first love, Wyatt perched up in his treehouse where they spent so much time together 14 years ago.
Wyatt was Sam’s first true love and when he broke things off 14 years ago to go to LA and become a musician, Sam was crushed. She spent a lot of time in therapy to get over him but nothing worked.
Fast forward to the now and you could still see the little sparks between Sam and Wyatt. Sam was outgoing, fun and creative while her fiancé, Jack, was boring, predictable and a total fun-sponge. Wyatt took her surfing, spent time with her family, and even went to the cake tasting with Sam so she wouldn’t be alone (because, you guessed it, Jack couldn’t go). Wyatt couldn’t understand why Sam was letting Jack dictate her life or her wedding.
With the wedding quickly approaching, Sam and Wyatt spent a lot more time together as friends again in Long Island while accepting the idea that Sam was marrying Jack. Wyatt was everything you could want in a relationship and Jack was the opposite. Jack thought Sam’s goals were silly and that her family was immature, and didn’t agree on anything Sam wanted for the wedding. Total red flags. Sam had a huge choice to make and let me just say, the ending was amazing and definitely HEA worthy.
Be sure to pick this addicting beach read up on release day June 6! Thank you @netgalley and @putnambooks for the opportunity to read this! 💕
A wonderful ping lost love story between Wyatt and Sam - the story really pulled me in and was a quick and easy read! There was some alternating time chapters and perspective from each of them through the story. In addition to the love story appreciated Sams desire to find herself and her roots. Everyone needs to read when this book comes out for a lighthearted warm read!
Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons For the ARC.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
I am utter trash for these reunion/second chance romances! In all honestly, this leaned more women's fiction for me since all the present days chapters were told from Sam's point of view, and she was working through a lot of personal stuff. The stress of her pending nuptials, her career crumbling, and returning to the scene of her biggest heartbreak was a lot to deal with all at once. However, being back at the beach breathe life back into this woman who had been hiding pieces of herself in the name of self preservation.
I loved the flashbacks and getting to see Sam and Wyatt's love story play out. I was curious as to how it all fell apart. I will admit, I was a bit disappointed in what happened there. If you read this book, you will understand why it frustrated me, but I could feel the love floating all around Sam and Wyatt when they were once again back at the beach. To be apart for that long and fall back into a friendship that easily shows how strong their bond really was. Obviously this situation was complicated, but the author managed to get me onboard, and I was really pleased with how things worked out for everyone involved.
The focus of this story was love and forgiveness, but there were great threads about being true to yourself and finding your passion. Needless to say, I had a spectacular summer at the beach!
Thanks NetGalley for the early copy of this book. Last year’s Nora Goes Off Script was one of my favorite lighter reads. For this first third of this I wasn’t sure it would live up to the first, but this book turned out to be a delight. I especially enjoyed how I felt I was actually at the bed while reading and it really nailed that feeling of being young and never wanting summer to end.
This book was like a warm summer hug!
I absolutely adored this book and will immediately need to read all the other books by Annabel Monaghan! It had everything I loved in a book; small town romance, dual POV, second chance and more!
The writing was done exceptionally well and I absolutely loved the flashes between the past and present!
This is definitely a book I will be purchasing on release day and taking with me to read by the beach!
Annabel Monaghan does it AGAIN! SOOO GOOD. This has everything! Releasing June 6th
✔️small town romance
✔️second chance romance
✔️dual POV
✔️teenage first loves
✔️ friends to lovers
Samantha and Wyatt’s parents own beach houses on Long Island next door. Since they can remember they’ve spent each summer together at the beach. Their friendship turns into something more right yon the precipice of both their families’ world turning upside down. Their young relationship is not able to withstand the shock of it all and dissolves abruptly.
Flash forward about 13 year later and Samantha is getting ready to marry Jack, a strait laced dermatologist, from New York. Samantha and Jack travel back to Samantha’s family beach house to entertain throwing their wedding in the idyllic town when Samantha runs into Wyatt who is staying the week next door in his old family house. 🫶🏻
I loved the “then” and “now” flashbacks! It’s always such a treat to start a story and then travel back in time to really understand the characters and their relationships to one another. Also I’m a sucker for a small town romance and I loved how the story transported out of the city to the perfect beach town. The description made you feel the salt air, the sand under your feet and the crashing waves.
I’m convinced that Annabel has nailed the formula to write the perfect romance and she will be an auto buy author for me in the future.
Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This book feels like summer and is a perfect beach read. It checks all those summer romance boxes - first love, second chance romance, summer loves, and a sleepy beach town. It is my second Abigail Monaghan book in as many months, and I don’t know what I’ll do without a new one in June. Monaghan has a fantastic way of delivering a book that is both a light-hearted romance and a deeper conversation about what it means to live the life you want to live (As she did with Nora Goes Off Script).
Sam was raised as the daughter of a quirky artist family that splits their time between NYC during the school year and a small beach town in the summers. During these magical summers, Sam is curious and artistic, plotting a future of creative adventure. She falls in love with Wyatt, her childhood friend next door. Their teenage romance forges a powerful bond that both believe will last a lifetime until events outside their control rip their families apart and put them on divergent paths. Years later, when their lives again intersect at the beach, Sam must analyze how much of her life in the present is a reaction to her past and decide who she wants to be moving forward.
This closed-door romance is a dual POV, dual timeline, first love, second chance, small-town charmer. In the days since I finished reading it, not only have I continued to think about the characters, but I’ve also been thinking about who I thought I’d be when I was a teenager, how I’ve evolved, and what parts of my past self I wish I could bring forward into who I am today.
Many thanks to Net Galley, Putnam Books, and Annabel Monaghan for the opportunity to read this novel in advance of its 6/6/2023 release in exchange for my honest review.

“Breaking out of a life that’s not working is a lot of work.”
I have all the feels about this book! The characters, the second chance love story, watching Sam choose the life she deserves & not the life she thinks she wants…perfection!
Overall, the book gave me It Ends With Us & Sweet Home Alabama vibes in the sense that there is an old flame the main character clearly hasn’t gotten over. When Sam returns to her home with a “perfect” fiancé & a put together resume, she thinks she has it all. But a few weeks at the beach with her family & first love show her she had a long way to go. Sam cares too much about how others perceive her, which is a struggle we all go through. I loved seeing her rediscover what really makes her happy!
In some of my hardest times in life, I did exactly what Sam does. She bargains with God, saying “If I do this, then things will be better.” She is so relatable in her vulnerability.
There is also representation of dyslexia in this book, which I love. Having several students with dyslexia, I appreciate it when authors write characters into their stories who share similar struggles with reading. Wyatt talks about these hardships and even attends a special school to help him overcome, & despite the struggle, he is arguable the most successful character in the book! Wyatt grew up to be a songwriter in LA who is now giving back to his hometown.
Annabel Monaghan also knows how to write the perfect ending! Both Nora Goes Off Script and Same Time Next Summer have incredibly satisfying endings that were wrapped in neat bows. I loved it!
Run, don’t walk, to your bookstore on June 6th to grab a copy of Same Time Next Summer!
Thank you @netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Perfect summer read. The atmosphere was fantastic, the story was fresh and fun! I liked this better than Nora Goes Off Script and will definitely recommend to friends.
Samantha (Sam) grew up spending the summer at the beach in Long Island with her family. Next door were the Popes with Wyatt who was a year older. They spent all of their time together in the summer and talked on the phone the other 9 months of the year. Wyatt wanted to move to LA and start his singing career. Sam wanted to be where Wyatt was. Then their last summer together, everything changed and Sam was left behind to pick up the pieces. It’s now a decade later and Sam is back at the beach with her fiancé Jack and trying to be ok with seeing Wyatt again after all these years.
This was a sweet summer romance and would be a good read for those who enjoyed Every Summer After. You’re rooting for Sam to find herself whether that includes Jack, Wyatt or neither. I wish we had gotten to know Wyatt a little better, but can also understand maybe why we didn’t right away. Great summer read to add to the TBR.
