I just couldn’t seem to out this book down. It was such a heartfelt read and made me feel innumerable number of emotions. Reading it was as equivalent as basking in the sun!! Overall it was incredible and I happen to absolutely love it.
I could relate to the feeling of going home, remembering who you were and getting back to that...but for whatever reason I just couldn't really get into this book. The Past chapters were good but the Present chapters didn't pull me in... Maybe it just takes a lot for me enjoy a Second Chance Romance. Unfortunately I just couldn't quite get into this one.
This book was so good! I found it hard to put down and wished it never ended! I loved the main characters and easily connected to them based on my own experiences. "Watching" them develop as the story unfolded was amazing and I really felt like I was there at times- I could picture myself joining for the bbq's on the porch. This book is a great read and I will highly recommend it to all my reading buddies! I cant wait to read more by Annabel Monaghan! Thanks for letting me read this advanced copy!
A perfect summer beach read. I loved that it was predictable yet still had enough twists to keep it interesting. As a woman who just turned 40, it's refreshing to read a story where a woman embraces who she is, not conforming to the idea of who she wants to be. We can all see ourselves in Sam-I-am. I read this book quickly and probably could've finished it in a day on the beach, but unfortunately, it's winter in Tennessee and I have a day job! I am definitely going to recommend this book to others and I will be looking forward to Monaghan's next book.
A sweet and nostalgic second chance romance that follows Sam(antha) and Wyatt from the age of five to their early thirties. Growing up in a beachside community on Long Island where their families summered, Sam and Wyatt were best friends and first loves. As teens they shared their most secret thoughts, dreams and longings until a sudden incident tears them apart causing each to re-evaluate who they are and what they want from their personal and professional lives.
While the characters and storyline kept me engaged, I found myself yearning for more. Same Time Next Year is the second novel of one of my favorite books of 2022, Nora Goes Off Script and I was hoping for a story that gave me the same feels I had with the first.
Thank you to Net Galley and Penguin Group Putnam, GP Putnam’s Sons for the advanced copy in return for my honest opinion.
Publication Date: June 6, 2023
Annabel Monaghan is back with another sweet novel with some romance, some drama, and an interesting cast of characters. In Same Time Next Summer, the story meanders back and forth between present day and the past - introducing Sam and Wyatt as young summer friends (their parents have neighboring houses on the Long Island Shore) to the point where their friendship developed into something more when they were teenagers.
They haven't seen each other, however, in 14 years, until the summer Sam is planning her wedding. In the interim, they both have created adult lives - but are they the lives they were meant to live?
Sam and Wyatt are great characters, but I also loved her family - parents, grandparents, sister, brother and his partner, and would have liked to see them more fully developed. There are a fair number of predictable moments and the ending was kind of quick. But, if you liked When Nora Goes Off Script, then run and pre-order/buy/reserve Same Time Next Summer!
Thanks to Netgalley and G.P. Putnam's Sons for the opportunity to read Same Time Next Summer in exchange for an honest review.
Nora Goes Off Script was one of my favorite books of 2022 and Same Time Next Summer was one of my most anticipated books of 2023, so a BIG thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
When Sam and her fiancé Jack spend time at her family’s beach house ahead of their upcoming wedding, Sam is shocked to find that the boy next door that she loved and lost, Wyatt, has returned as well. Seeing Wyatt again after over a decade apart has Sam remembering their beloved summers together and how she felt when he broke her heart.
After reading Same Time Next Summer, I can definitely say that Annabel Monaghan is an auto-buy author for me. I loved this second chance/friends to lovers romance! I particularly enjoyed the rich descriptions of the beach town setting, dual timelines, and dual POVs which I thought enhanced the story and really allowed the reader to understand the connection between Sam and Wyatt.
I highly recommend picking this up when it publishes on June 6, 2023.
This was a very sweet second chance- teenage summer fling- romance. .
It broke my heart how everything ended in their teenage years. But when they were finding themselves in each other and being completely comfortable and best friends with each was very sweet.
I enjoyed having the now and then timelines and the dual POV.
I loved how Wyatt knew Sam even when she was trying to hide herself. His love her for was so pure- I wish I could have heard some of his lyrics.
I’m glad that Wyatt gave Sam a kind of a wake up call- she definitely needed it- and needed to figure out what she wants in life.
I could have used some more of Wyatt and Sam together.
I need to start this review by saying that I loved loved loved “Same Time Next Summer”! Like, “read non-stop and finish the book in less than 24 hours” loved. The characters, the storyline, the setting…really there wasn’t an aspect of this book that I didn’t enjoy and I 100% recommend to anyone looking for a good summer read!
Synopsis: Sam is bringing her fiancé Jack to her parent’s beach house in Long Island to tour a wedding venue. As soon as she steps into her childhood vacation home though, she finds out that Wyatt, her friend since age 5 and first love of her life, is back in town and living next door again. It’s been 14 years since Sam has seen Wyatt, since Wyatt walked out of her life and left her in pieces, and since then she’s put her life on track. She has a fiancé who she has a great routine with (very romantic!), a job she loves (but may lose), and a life in New York City she is comfortable in. Yet being back at the beach house, seeing Wyatt and doing things she used to love, floods Sam with memories of her carefree years there, has her wondering if the track she’s currently on is meant to be.
While the “seeing your childhood love after a long break” is not a new storyline, I think there are enough additions to “Same Time Next Summer” to make it unique and enjoyable. Wyatt and Sam have a young love, and it struggles when faced with adult issues that neither of them know how to properly deal with. It’s a relatable issue with young love and doesn’t leave the reader hating either party for the breakup. All of the characters, even if flawed, are likable and play a roll in the overall story. The dialogue was fun, not overdone or super cheesy like many Romantic Fiction books tend to be. So many times I skip over a paragraph while reading a book because it feels like a regurgitation of something I just read, and I didn’t do that with this book. The book also jumps into the story right away, so you are hooked within the first 5-6 pages.
If I had to wish for anything to be different, it would be getting more details on what happens with Wyatt and Sam at the end of the book. While I didn’t mind the ending, I definitely would not complain if the author gave us a little more on how things end up with both parties. Maybe there’s room for a sequel? Either way, this is a 5 star read for me, and I highly encourage everyone to give it a try!!
**Thank you thank you thank you to Penguin/G.P. Putnam &Sons and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Annabel Monaghan for writing this great book!**
Thank you netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for allowing me to read this book. This book was so sweet! I absolutely loved getting to read about Sam and Wyatt falling in love as kids and still feeling that chemistry be there years later. Honestly I squealed when they first kissed because it brought me back to mine. I really loved when Sam finally noticed that being with Jack was keeping her from being herself and she decided to choose herself over him. I really loved they way Wyatt loved and appreciated her for who she was. I really appreciated the author throwing in little twists which I thought made it more interesting and fun to read. This love story ended beautifully and I’m so glad these soulmates found their way back to each other.
Sam is now thirty and engaged to a doctor they both work in Manhattan. She grew up going to spend the summer at the beach. Her next-door neighbor Wyatt was her teenage love. When Sam and Jack go to the beach to spend time with her parents and discuss their upcoming wedding Wyatt is next door this year. Wyatt left Sam behind after a blowup between the families when they were teens.
Sam and Wyatt had expected to spend their lives together until that last summer together. Jack and Sam spend a week at the beach and Sam spends a little time with Wyatt and they discuss the past and how they have moved on.
When Sam returns to Manhattan, she realizes that Jack is not really who she wants to spend her life with and her job is stifling her.
Nora Goes Off Script was one of my favorite reads of 2022 so I was thrilled to receive a digital ARC of Same Time Next Summer. I had high expectations for this book but unfortunately did not feel very drawn in by the characters or plot - they did not feel unique. The chemistry between characters was not terribly believable and the ending felt very rushed to tie off loose ends of the story.
The beach setting, nostalgia and feel-good second chance romance storyline will likely be loved by some readers but this book was not as good as I had hoped. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group/G.P. Putnam’s Sons for this digital ARC
I was so excited to receive a copy of Same Time Next Summer as I absolutely LOVED Nora. Now that I've read two of Annabel Monaghan's books, she is an automatic read author for me!!
I could not have loved this book more. I loved the character development, the relationships, the reality of the situations, but most of all I was just simply lost in the writing. Several times, I had to slow myself down so I would not devour too quickly. 10/10 would recommend this book to anyone looking to smile. Thank you so much for the ARC!!
Loved, loved, loved. Annabel Monaghan is just so stinking talented, it's not even fair. She writes her characters in such a raw, beautiful way that you find yourself championing them throughout the entire book. You feel every single emotion, and every heartbreak that they go through. And anytime I had to take a break from reading, I found myself yearning to go back and finish the story. The book hangover from this one is unreal. Five stars, all around.
Annabel Monaghan may be one of my favorite authors. After reading Nora Goes Off Script last year I knew this would steal another happy spot in my heart.
I feel like so many times we are faced with the what if scenarios in life… what if I stepped into a career I loved, what if that relationship would have worked out, what if I just let myself be me, and all of those challenges were wrapped up effortlessly in a love story.
I can’t wait to recommend this for my book club book. It’s the perfect summer read and will pair effortlessly with your favorite margarita or mai tai in hand.
2.75/5 stars! There's nothing inherently wrong with this book, but there's absolutely nothing that makes it unique. It is a second-chance contemporary romance. The FMC is likable but the MMC's motivations kind of sucked and his actions in the past didn't incline me to offer him redemption in the present. If you're looking for a simple, quick romcom, this book will do it. Just don't look for a new perspective in this genre, because it isn't present in this book.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

“If it were me- and it was me, so I know- I’d want you to be everything you could be.”
It’s that time of year when all I want is for it to be June, and thanks to NetGalley I had the opportunity to read a delicious summer romance that I could not put down.💗
Y’all know my thing for friends to lovers/ second chance.. you give me 52535216 versions of it and I will devour each and every one of them!! The aching, the pining of it all. That’s what does it for me & this delivered!
It’s a perfect blend of Every Summer After and Love & Other Words for me, (but different!) and I found myself so attached to Sam & Wyatt and their families. There was such a realness to their characters that you couldn’t help but root for them, and more than finding each other, they found themselves. (There’s a Taylor Swift quote somewhere in that)
ANYWAY, I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks when this releases in June!!
I adored Monaghan's debut, Nora Goes Off Script, so Same Time Next Summer was high on my list of anticipated reads of 2023. Sadly, I didn't feel as charmed by the plot or the characters and was left pretty underwhelmed by the love story. I know many readers will love the nostalgic Every Summer After vibes, but this one just didn't work for me.
The storyline was not unique and I was hoping for a twist or major reveal that would add depth to the plot, but it never came. I found the main characters a bit bland, with personalities I wish had been developed a tad more. The transitions between past and present chapters felt choppy, especially due to the alternating POV. I also never really felt the chemistry between the characters (either time!). The ending felt rushed and almost all of the character growth is seen at the very last minute.
I know second chance romance isn't my personal favorite trope, but I loved the maturity of the characters in Nora and was hoping for more of the same here. I think if you are craving more books like Every Summer After or Love and Other Words, you should definitely check this out. There are some charming moments and I was definitely reminded of summers I spent at the lake growing up, which is always nice.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Its a beach read but I really enjoyed it.
✨✨✨✨
Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the eARC!
My biggest mistake was starting this book at 11PM on a Sunday... but only because I could not put it down, finished it in one sitting, and was extremely tired for work the next day!
I really love anything childhood friends to lovers/second chance romances. When done correctly (i.e. in a way that provides sufficient backstory, but doesn't necessarily take away from the current plot development), I also love a dual timeline story. In this case, I really appreciated that the "Then" portions of this book were told in third person so we could have a bit more insight to Wyatt's POV. We do get one chapter from his first-person account, I would've loved for even more insight into his POV during the "Now" portions of the book.
I've seen some comparisons between this book and Every Summer After. I do see the similarity; however, while Every Summer After is considered to be a little too heavily inspired by Love and Other Words, I believe Same Time Next Summer achieved what it was trying to do by appealing to the same audience as Love and Other Words (one of my all time favorites), without feeling like I was reading the same book. The biggest downside from Same Time Next Summer is that I found it to be a bit short in some of the places I wish the author expanded on (i.e. More of Wyatt's "Now" POV and more scenes with the highly entertaining background/secondary characters).
Highly recommend to anyone who loves friends to lovers, second chance romances, dual timelines, and a nice, comforting beach read ✨✨✨✨
