Thank you to @netgalley and @putnambooks for this advanced copy of Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan.
So, I liked the book. Wyatt is a great guy and I loved how fun and supportive Sam's family is. I read this in one day. Some angst but it didn't leave me reeling with emotional trauma that prevented sleep. Not spicy but that's okay.
The issue is that it doesn't stand out from other second-chance romances that I've read recently that have given me that *something.* Think, Love and Other Words; One Day in December; RoomHate. They really dove into the circumstances and emotional/mental states the characters were in when they parted and afterwards. I think that is what is missing for me in this book: that emotional depth and trauma the characters faced. It was talked about but not explored enough.
The present day was mostly in Sam's perspective. I needed more of Wyatt's. The past was more equally balanced. Perhaps that's the reason why it lacked emotional depth. We hear a lot about what Sam faced after their separation but not enough about Wyatt's headspace and his reaction to Sam's ultimate response. This was key because it was his action that led to, well, everything. It felt like the book ended up as Sam's story when it was supposed to be both of theirs.
This book made me want summer to come now. I loved the book. Winters are 6 months long here in Maine so I wanted a summer vibe since it’s so cold here. It just made me that much more anxious for summer.
I know this book doesn't come out until summer time (which would be the perfect time to read it), but I live in Minnesota and winter is impossibly long and I got a sinus infection and needed to read this book now! I was a huge fan of "Nora Goes Off Script" and this book has a very similar vibe. I loved the complex rich characters that stay with you long after you finish the book, a setting on the beach that feels so real you can feel the sand. between your toes and the sun on your shoulders and a second chance romance that features the power of your first love. Much of the book is spent looking backward and I did wish there was more around the relationship in the present. Overall, a fun fast warm fuzzy read.
Thank you to Netgalley & PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons for the ARC.
I absolutely loved this book and didn’t want it to end! I loved the characters and story line and look forward to reading more by this author. I will definitely be recommending this one to everyone!
I am grateful for the opportunity to have read this book before publication and to provide my honest opinion.
I loved Nora Goes Off Script and found Same Time Next Summer to be just as enjoyable to read. The Long Island beachfront setting is the perfect backdrop for this surf and sunshiny romance set to be published June 2023. I'll be buying a hardcopy and re-reading Samantha's story of self-discovery with my toes in the sand.
Thank you #NetGalley and #PenguinGroupPutnam for the ARC e-book!
This book is a breath of fresh summer air and so beautifully written. The love and connection between Sam and Wyatt is so real, with so much depth, which is most important to me in a romance novel. I love how the Sam finds her way back to herself. It made me question if there are parts of my life that I am not living as the real me. I really enjoyed the layout and that readers also get to see a bit of Wyatt's point of view. The writing is smooth and has such a nice flow to it. After I read the last sentence, I let out a big sigh, feeling oh so warm and content, as if I been out laying in the sun. 5 stars.
Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for the ARC!
This book had me feeling young and reminiscent of that first love feeling. So sweet and cute! It made me long for the days where love was simple and carefree. Maybe even wish to bring that back into my adult life. More of a 3.5 rating as the writing was sweet and the read was a quick one for me. I was interested to see where these characters ended up and how.
Books like these are my favorite to read in the summer and make me CRAVE summer like crazy when I read them in any other season.
This was a perfect second chance romance read for the summer and I definitely think I could read this again and again every summer. I loved this one!
I'm a huge fan of the second chance romance trope so when I saw Same Time Next Summer I knew I had to read it. I feel like the second chance romance trope allows the romance between two characters to have so much more depth and this was true of Sam and Wyatt.
What I loved;
- second chance romance, summer nostalgia
- You could literally feel the emotion between Sam and Wyatt and they literally felt like real people to me. I rarely care about characters, but I wanted these two to get together SO much!
- Annabel's writing style really agreed with me! This book is beautifully written and I loved every second
- This book is literally a summer escape. It may be winter here, but I felt like I was right there in their Long Island beach town.
- I quite literally couldn't put this book down!

3.5 stars.
This book had everything I want and love in a story -- it was emotional and beautifully, beautifully written, with compelling characters and a progression that felt natural. The dual timelines and POV was interesting and very well done. I enjoyed seeing how the past shaped Sam & Wyatt's future.
The setting was written so vividly I truly felt like I could picture it. I am a huge second chance romance fan and this one absolutely delivered!
A huge thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
Cute, fun summery story for me to escape the winter. Just what I needed after reading some more serious books.Romance fans should definitely add this to their TRB piles this summer.
Thank you Net Galley for the early copy.
Thank you to Netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the chance to read and review this ARC.
Imagine having a home away from home. A place you go to when the days are warm and long and everything is just a little bit easier. That's the reality for Sam and Wyatt, summertime neighbors on the Jersey Shore since Sam was five and Wyatt was six. and from that a love story blossomed.
I really enjoyed Same Time Next Summer. It was a relaxing, comforting read that I was able to read in just a few days. I was a little thrown at first by the change from first to third person in the first part of the book, but then I got used to it and it wasn't nearly as confusing. This is a pretty clean book, mostly with fade to black scenes and played out a bit like a Hallmark movie. Clean and simple, wrapped up right at the end while the entire time I was waiting for Jack to start hating Wyatt. It just never happened. Jack was a bit too lax about it, I don't know. Maybe I'm just being picky about it.
Overall a solid book and I'm excited to read more from this author!
I loves this story just as much as Nora Goes Off Script. Annabel Monaghan has a way of writing that captures you and doesn't let you go! Such a great story about your first true love and how you'll always wonder about the one who got away.
4.5⭐️Loved this one!! A perfect summer read for fans of Swear on This Life, Every Summer After and Love and Other Words.
Synopsis: Sam returns back to her parents Long Island summer home with her fiancé for a short weekend trip. What she didn’t expect is for her first love and childhood best friend, Wyatt, to be back in the same small town too. Seeing him after all these years mixed with some wedding planning stress brings back feelings that question the state of Sam’s current relationship and whether she is really happy or just content.
Thoughts: Told in dual POVs and timelines, it was easy to get swept into the story. The beach setting was so vivid, I felt as though I was right there alongside the characters. Both Sam and Wyatt had some great character growth and while I, of course, wish they didn’t spend so many years apart, it really made their connection stronger. Also, the hero had dyslexia, and I loved seeing that representation in the book.

*Spoilers ahead*
It took me until about halfway through to really get into this book, but I honestly don’t know if that is the book’s fault or my own. Once the story finally started coming together for me I couldn’t put it down. I was a little frustrated by how obvious it was that Jack wasn’t the right man for Sam. Also, the ending felt a little rushed. I feel like Sam’s mom wanted her to be with Jack so much that she would have pushed back more when Sam left him, and especially when she got back together with Wyatt. All in all, a solid second chance romance.
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I discovered Annabel Monaghan's novel, Nora Goes Off Script a week ago. I loved it! After I finished reading it, I searched NetGalley to see of there was an ARC of her book Same Time Next Summer available. I was approved quickly and started reading. I fell in love with Wyatt and Sam. Ms Monaghan knows how to write a beautiful love story mixed with family drama and breakups. Add it a gorgeous location of Long Island's East End beaches! WOW! The supporting characters are as well written as the main characters! Ms. Monaghan has become another of my "Must-Read" authors! Thanks to NetGalley, Penguin Group Publishers and Annabel Monaghan for the Arc!
As Sam and her fiancé head back to her parent’s summer house, Same Time Next Summer is a wistful look back at teenage love and the grown-up choices that need to be made about the lives Sam and Wyatt want to live, not the lives they should live.
Annabel Monaghan creates thoughtfully imperfect characters and storylines that are pleasantly unpredictable. Put this in your summer beach read pile ASAP.
Same Time Next Summer is a sweet, nostalgic beach read. There truly is nothing better than a second chance romance involving two BFFs turned lovers who’ve known each other since childhood.
I read this book in one sitting thanks to the short chapters and quick pace. Sam’s journey, especially regarding what she’s looking for throughout the rest of her adult life, was profound.
The “aha” moment did have me rolling my eyes a little bit— seriously, who doesn’t Google their ex once in the 13 years since their breakup! The ending and overall description of the beach setting did add back points in the plus column for me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
Nora Goes Off Script was one of my top reads of 2022, so I was thrilled to receive an eARC of Annabel Monaghan's next book. Same Time Next Summer was the perfect summer beach read and a sweet second chance romance. Perfect for fans of Every Summer After!
4.5⭐️ rounded up. This is the perfect summery read. Friends to lovers is one of my favs. Seeing Sam grow into herself was great. This book made me wish I was barefoot on a beach!!
