Thank you NetGalley and Putnam books for this eARC, I thoroughly enjoyed it! This cute story was written so well that it felt like I was right there on the beach with the characters or up in their treehouse. I enjoyed Sam’s point of view, I could connect with her and her emotions throughout this book. I do wish I had more points of view from the other characters. I enjoyed all of the life quotes sprinkled into the book. I will definitely be reading more books from this author!
This is the story of Sam, who grows up over summers on a Long Island beach with her artist parents. She has a summer friend/neighbor, Wyatt, & they eventually grow into teenagers who fall in love. (Bonus points for the most adorable nickname in all of summer romance… Wyatt calls her “Sam-I-Am” 😍)
The teen relationship hits a major road block that it doesn’t recover from, and life continues on post break up… They become adults. Sam works in an NYC PR firm & Wyatt becomes a successful songwriter in LA.
Sam finds herself back at the beach as a 30 year old with her fiancé, Jack. Wyatt also just happens to be next door working on a DIY project at his old house. The story picks up from there, & it is really great. While it didn’t resonate with me as much as Nora, it was still fantastic.
I especially loved that Sam has a much younger sister, Gracie. That relationship was so sweet. This book is a great read alike for People We Meet on Vacation. It had a similar vibe to that! If you liked PWMOV, you will love Same Time Next Summer.
4.5/5
Thanks to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam's for the ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
I absolutely loved this author's Nora Goes Off Script. This one was almost as good. I didn't love the "now" chapters at first, I guess mostly because I didn't like Jack, but once I got further into the story, I loved it. Reading a summer story when it's 12 degrees outside was quite enjoyable. It was so descriptive, I could picture everything about the house/treehouse/town. If second chance romance is your thing, grab this book, you won't regret it. A quick read that will put a smile on your face.
Nora goes off script might be my favorite women’s fiction/ romance book of 2022! Of course when I heard out there’s another Annabel Monaghan book was about to release on June 2023, I got overexcited to get my hands on it!
I’m so blessed to have an early copy! What did I think about the book? Well, Sam-I-am and Wyatt unfinished loved story made me sing Summer Loving from Grease. Their intense, innocent, genuine childhood lovers story broke my heart. Since the moment Sam returns back to her hometown with her doctor fiancée Jack, without even reading their back story, I root for Samatt ( Sam-Wyatt)! I know there was something still unresolved! I know they still ache for each other from the moment they meet again.
It was so exciting to see how they’ve changed by years, how their lives have been evolved. Sam still looks for appropriate career for her without even confessing to herself, choosing the safe choice for a man not to get hurt. And Wyatt is full of surprises! I’m not giving away too much! Just read it to find out!
Their confrontation about past and embracing the present moments may take too much time and conclusion of their story was a little rushed.
The book is also a little short! I wish I could spend more time with the characters! Especially Sam’s eccentric family: Gradpa, Grandma, Gracie were my favorite supporting characters.
I honestly enjoyed this book but Nora Goes off Script is still my favorite book. I enjoyed it more!
Special thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam/ G. P. Putnam’s Sons for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
This is going to be the ultimate summer read.
Same Time Next Summer starts when our main character Sam, on suspension at her ridgid HR job returns to her family's beach house with her Dr Fiance only to find that her first love Wyatt ( the one that broke her heart ) is back too.
I loved that this book was half YA and half adult romance. I usually hate non linear timelines, but we got to see Wyatt and Sam fall in love as teenagers and we get to see them as adults dealing with the fallout.
I love that in the end, Sam realizes she doesn't need Wyatt or her fiance to make her complete. She follows her heart and it leads to the best conclusion.
I would of course, have loved more spice. It's a closed door romance , but it's beautifully done and such a good read. So If you love second chance romance, and a quick read that invokes summer, this is for you.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam and Netgalley for an ARC of this book! I’ve willingly read and reviewed it. All opinions are my own.
After reading and absolutely loving NORA GOES OFF SCRIPT, I was desperate to read Annabel Monaghan’s newest, SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER and so excited when I was approved.
SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER follows Sam, on leave from her rigid HR job, as she heads to her family’s beach home on Long Island with her doctor fiancé. She returns for just a few days each year because the home holds memories of her first and most painful heartbreak. Yet this year’s trip is different. Not only is she bringing her fiancé with her, showing him a radically different side to her artist parents, but also for the fact that Wyatt, their next door neighbor and her first love is back.
The story jumps back and forth between the past and the present, allowing the reader to see how the relationship of a couple so in love is eventually destroyed.
While I enjoyed the story—it was a pretty quick one!—and getting to see how this love story progressed over the years, I really wish we could have gotten more than a glimpse of Sam and Wyatt in the present. I loved their chemistry and banter and simply wanted more.
As many reviewers mentioned, THIS TIME NEXT SUMMER is similar to LOVE AND OTHER WORDS by Christina Lauren and EVERY SUMMER AFTER by Carley Fortune but I definitely preferred the “twist” in THIS TIME NEXT SUMMER.
This was a generic second chance romance. I adored Annabel Monaghan's first romance novel Nora Goes Off Script because it brought a new perspective to the romance genre and because Nora was such a winsome protagonist. I thought Sam Holloway, the protagonist of Same Time Next Summer, was incredibly self-indulgent, immature, and seemed so oblivious to what was happening around her. The novel alternates between present and past, and it's predicated on the idea that Sam has been pining for years over her summer love Wyatt Pope, who broke her heart at age 17. I understand waxing nostalgic about the past, but it seems WILD that Sam would be so hung up on Wyatt still at age 30...and yet she never even looked him up or had a clue what he was doing with his life! That seemed implausible, no matter how much Sam wanted to distance herself from him. Also, Sam's fiancé Jack was just too neat of a foil for Wyatt; he was boring and predictable, while Wyatt was meant to be artistic and romantic. After all the originality of Nora Goes Off Script, this left me wanting more from the characters and storyline. I hope to see more creativity from Annabel Monaghan in the future, as I know she's absolutely capable of it!
Same Time Next Summer is a sweet novel about two childhood best friends, Samantha and Wyatt, turned lovers who spent all their summers together at the beach before a family revelation tears them apart. Years later, they are reunited unexpectedly in the place where they fell in love, only Sam is married and Wyatt is not exactly forthcoming about his success. However, their connection proves too strong to stay away from each other, even if only as "friends," as their bond is undeniable. The story is told as a dual timeline and I found myself much more drawn to the "Now" storyline. Sam was an extremely relatable character who created a safe life for herself to shield herself from the fractures that young heartbreak caused. I found myself rooting for them throughout the whole book. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley!
Ahhhh, so I LOVED Nora Goes Off Script and I wasn't sure if SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER could match in greatness, but I'm happy to report it did! I really loved SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER as much as Nora.
The story rotates between the past when Samantha and Wyatt were kids to the present where we find Samantha is engaged to a man not named Wyatt.
We find out what made Sam and Wyatt fall in love and how that love compares to her and her husband-to-be.
Oh, unrequited love, then young love, then sad love, angry love, reunited love ... this story has it all.
Sam was frustrating at times because she was going through the motions of life without speaking up. But we've all been there a time or two (or many, many times). I thought the story was just a tad too long, but I read it in a day because the characters kept my attention.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for an e-copy of SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER to review.
I rate SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER five out of five stars.
This delightful love story bounces back and forth between the perspectives of Sam and Wyatt, in the present and past. It chronicles their path to young love and how much their lives have changed 14 years later. Both have been on journeys of self-discovery and find that their original love is as true as ever, contrary to what Sam's therapist might think. The supporting cast of characters is lovely and the beach functions like a character in and of itself. A wonderful second novel from Annabel Monaghan!
Annabel Monaghan has done it again - she's taken a fun, soapy premise, and somehow turned it into a relatable story with grounded, likable characters. The setup and dual timelines will inspire a lot of comparisons to Carley Fortune's Every Summer After, but Monaghan's novel delivers far less angst and targets adult readers. Ultimately, I loved that Same Time Next Summer was not only a tale of childhood sweethearts, but also an exploration of Sam finding her way back to herself. The perfect summer read of 2023!
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Having loved Nora Goes Off Script, I knew I would enjoy this story. The author focuses on her character’s personal growth as much as she does the romance. Sam’s struggles are believable, and we see her growth from insecure teen and self-assured adult.
It is so easy to lose pieces of yourself in a relationship with the wrong person. The author captures this arc beautifully.
She realizes that she does not need Wyatt (or any man) to complete her, and they choose each other anyway. A truly modern, charming romance.
Thank you to NetGalley
First off, I think my new favorite romantic trope is second chance romances, specifically when it's a story about teenagers who reconnect as adults and fall back in love.
If you loved reading "Every Summer After" or "Love and Other Words" you will LOVE this one.
This was also a good reminder to remember to choose your own happiness and be your authentic self because frankly life is too short to not follow your dreams.
My favorite line from this book is "You are the most important person who has ever been in my life, and you're not even the most important person in your own". As soon as I read that I had to pause and write this quote in my notes app because I never want anyone to say that to me. Moral of the story: choose yourself and be authentic... also give people second chances!
This book is a homecoming. It is an ode to childhood innocence, teenage love, the nostalgia we feel for places in our past and just hope and despair in our futures. The characters are well thought out and the whole family at the center just feels so inperfectly right. This is a perfect homecoming, a girl coming back to her summer spot, to her family, to her childhood love, and to herself.
Thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for an early reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Samantha lives a very by-the-book life with her fiance, and is about to spend a couple of days with her family at their beach house. Little does she know that her boyfriend from 13+ years ago will also be there. She hasn't seen him since he tore her life apart. Will they make amends or will he tear her life apart again?
Within the first few chapters, I felt myself getting annoyed with Samantha. You're telling me that you dated this boy thirteen years ago and you've returned WITH YOUR FIANCE, and you're not over your ex? Then, the story flipped to what happened all of the previous summers, and I fell in love with their story, too.
I'm giving it four stars because I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it as one of the best beach reads of 2023. I'm docking a star for the consistent lack of realism from start to finish.
This is the second book I have read of this author; I read “Nora Goes off Script” recently and I found myself enjoying both books for the same reasons and being bothered by the same reasons for both books. First off, I really enjoyed this one! I loved the focus on the main character needing to figure herself out and her growth. This book gave me “Love and Other Words” vibes, but I liked this book so much better. It felt more mature, less drama-for-the-sake-of-drama, more thought-provoking.
Spoiler warning!!!
Something the author does so well is the settings. She writes such beautiful locations. I love the characters she writes; their endearing quirks and flaws and I love her plots that focus on women trying to find their footing in life.
Something I struggle with in both of the books I have read of hers, is that a huge chunk of the book focuses on how the lead male messes up and there is a breakup and therefore, he loses trust with me as the reader. Then in some quick whiplash of an ending, they get back together and all is forgiven and there is no accountability or suffering on the male’s part. Both books it made me uncomfortable because so much time is spent on getting the reader to lose trust in this man over something, but then not enough is done to help regain my trust in him by the end. I just get frustrated when I read all of the suffering the main girl goes through when dealing with the breakup and the guy never seems to suffer nearly as much from their breakup.
Overall, a good book and I’d recommend it! She’s a good writer who writes beautiful stories, but I would like to see her lead male characters grow and develop in her future works. I’m excited to follow this author and see her writing grow!!
Same Time Next Summer was a sweet, feel-good second chance romance that had me smiling throughout. I didn’t love it as much as I completely adored Nora Goes Off Script but I also wasn’t disappointed. The story flips back and forth between Sam and Wyatt’s teenage romance gone wrong and their unexpected reunion while Sam is planning her wedding to someone else. There’s a sweet innocence to their teenage romance that makes you root for them to get that back in the present day storyline. I loved Sam’s quirky family who all completely adored each other but who also went through a tough experience that made them stronger. I do feel like I wanted more to the ending, which felt abrupt, even though I did still like it. I think that if you loved Nora Goes Off Script, you will probably also like this but maybe lower your expectations just a tad. I’m not sure how the author could get better than Nora’s story.
Summary: When Sam and her fiancé Jack head back to her family’s Long Island beach house in search of a nearby wedding venue, she is thrown for a loop when it turns out her first love Wyatt has returned as well. As she and Wyatt begin to reconnect, Sam is confronted with the memories of all that she shared with him and finds herself torn between her past and her present.
Thoughts: Earlier this year, I read and loved Nora Goes off Script, so when I saw Annabel Monaghan had a new book out, I jumped at the chance to read it (a whole six moths prior to publication). Featuring a few of my favorite tropes such as second chance love and friends to lovers, this book strikes the perfect balance between romance and women’s fiction.
The romance at the center of this story is perfection. Told in dual timeline with dual points of view, it was incredibly moving to read about the journey these two MC’s took from friends to lovers, to a years long estrangement and then ultimately back into each other’s lives. While I struggled to connect to Sam’s character at first, in large part because of her counterpart Jack, once she allowed me in, I felt as though I really knew and understood her. Because of that connection, my emotional investment in her outcome both personally and professionally was incredibly high.
I also loved the beach setting, especially having spent summers on Long Island myself, and could just envision Sam’s family home, with all of the quirky intricacies it held. It brought back such fond memories of looking for sea shells and beach glass all summer and spending entire days on the beach from sunrise to sunset. I also loved the use of the dual settings to show the juxtaposition between the two worlds Sam found herself torn between.

Thank you to Putnam and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. Monaghan has become an auto-buy author for me and I cannot wait to see what she comes out with next.
☀️ It’s no secret I adored ‘Nora Goes Off Script’ last summer, so I simply couldn’t wait when I got a chance to read @annabelmonaghan’s latest thanks to @netgalley & @putnambooks.
☀️ It’s another home-run folks, solidifying Monaghan’s place as an auto-read author for me. I finished this about a week ago, and I’m STILL thinking about these characters. (Full disclosure that fact had me bumping my original 4.5 up to a 5)
☀️ If you loved ‘Every Summer After’ or ‘Love And Other Words’ — you’ve GOT to check out this second-chance beach romance when it comes out in June. In my opinion, it’s better than both of those books, and it could very likely be your favorite book of the summer!
☀️ This one is packed full of nostalgia for teenage summer love, a meant-to-be romance and some laugh out loud moments. Beyond the love story, I also really enjoyed Sam’s journey back to her true self throughout this book.

This book follows Sam who has everything going for her and is planning her wedding to her perfect fiance jack until things change when she runs into her first live Wyatt.
.
I loved Sam as a character, she was so honest and real, I really enjoyed the flashback scenes and getting to see her grow up. I loved the way each character was written and developed so none of them seemed unrealistic but believable and easy to fall in love with. As much as I loved this book there was one thing that could have been better, more Wyatt, I feel like we didn't get to see or no him that well, however, what e did get to see of him I absolutely loved!
.
thank you so much Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this arc in exchange fro an honest review.
