The Christmas Wish follows newly single Gwen Baker. She is an attorney who, after an outburst at work is going home for the holidays. This outburst was due in part to her boyfriend dumping her for the secretary, a man she thought she was going to marry. With her cousin and best friend Manny by her side, she thinks she can get thru the holidays. That is until she wakes up to discover its Christmas Day, again.. The one bright spot is her former crush and lovable neighbor Dev.
This one was so cute! It was so well written and funny. Typically Christmas books are too cheesy for me and i give up on them but this one had me hooked. Will def look out for more by this author!
A cozy, hot chocolate by the fireplace kind of read. Lindsey Kelk has written an absolutely perfect holiday romance full of humor, wit, and everything you're looking for this season, The Christmas Wish is a five-star read!
This book is freaking hilarious!! Romance, drama, family turmoil, hijinks. Incredibly fun and entertaining. Absolutely a Christmas Groundhog Day. Gwen isn’t a douche like Murray’s character but her life does need a refresher. Manny and Nan are my favorite characters but the book has an overall wonderful cast
I went into this book thinking it would be another holiday romance book, but I was wrong. That being said, I am glad I was. There was much more to the story that that Hallmark traditional romance story.
Gwen, a lawyer at a fancy London firm, goes back home for Christmas with her cousin Manny(can I just say I loved Manny I think we all need a Manny in our life. He was funny and more of a best friend than a cousin. He’s that one that you need to be blunt and hilarious at the same time.). Gwen’s life is more or less a train wreck. She’s on a forced leave due to an “incident” at work. Her boyfriend of several years cheated on her with his receptionist and seems to have zero remorse as he moved on and she had to move out of their home.
Christmas is chaos with her family and when it’s over we aren’t sure how things could get much worse. However, they do. She gets stuck reliving her Christmas over and over again. Gwen tries to figure out how to make it stop. Does she need to solve one of her family member’s wishes(minus that horrid brother in law) or figure out her own? What about her childhood crush, Dev, that she hasn’t seen in years that happens to be next door again for the holidays? How will he fit into all of this?
This story was festive, cute, and had all the makings of a wonderful Christmas story. I was concerned when it was a Groundhog Day type storyline, but was pleasantly surprised on how that worked for this. At times it was a little slow and I wanted to hurry it along to see what would finally pull her out of this. I also wanted more Dev. That aside it was a lovely book and I would recommend it for a Christmas read!
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me this ARC in return for my honest review.
Thank you to Harper 360 and NetGalley for the ARC!
Groundhog Day movie meets Christmas! Was a fun plot that I've not really seen before! It was a quick and lighthearted read.
Gwen has a horrible Christmas and cannot wait for it to be over. When she she goes to bed she wakes up and it is Christmas again! As she tries to break the loop she falls in love with her childhood crush, Dev. It is such a cute romcom and I love watching Gwen go through Christmas again and again and her making each day better!
I really enjoyed this book. The story was very original and well written. I loved the characters and their banter with each other. If you are looking for a fun Christmas book, this is it!
Absolutely fantastic plot! Could not put the book down once I began reading it. Cannot wait for it to be released. Will recommend it to everyone I know!
I loved this book! This is my first book by Lindsey, but it definitely will not be my last! I highlighted so many good quotes!
I loved Gwen and related to her so, so much. She is the type of person who wants to help everyone else before herself. She wants to know what she can do to help and is going through life on auto-pilot. She ends up having to relive Christmas Day over and over again and each day is different and she has to figure out what she has to do in order to get to Boxing Day. There are fights among family members, kisses, missed and messed up communication and much more.
You will cringe, laugh out loud, smile, and maybe even tear up over this story and you definitely need to add it to your Christmas TBR!
This was cute. A fun, light hearted Hallmark movie meets Groundhog's Day book. I like the way all her relationships were resolved in different "days" but that she was able to combine all that by the end. I wasn't a fan of the pantry ending though! So gruesome. Ha.
Easy, breezy Christmas seasoney. Well I tried. Time loops is the latest revival magical realmness plot point to be in pop culture each with a little slant. This one has all the trimmings of a loveable but dysfunctional family that talks around things instead of about things, so our lead Gwen, has to figure out why she wakes up each day to her father saying 'Hes been!' as opposed to a massive hangover and holiday regret. It's a quick read and even if a bit formulaic you can see the Netflix Christmas special playing out before your eyes and know you'd watch it again. If you already know and love Lindsey Kelk books, then this is another to add to the list. For those who haven't read her before if you like early Jane Green and Stephanie Plum or Caprice Crane, Emily Henry, etc you'll like this.. I don't mind predictable stories as long as theyre fun, humorous and packed with references and relatable content of listening to Red (Taylor's version) during particularly dark times (even if it's in your 30s/40s).
📚: The Christmas Wish by Lindsey Kelk (@lindseykelk)
⭐️: 3.5/5 (rounding down on #Goodreads)
Gwen, normally full of Christmas cheer (and multiple advent calendars), is having a tough time this Christmas. Newly single, her mindset is a little more sad Taylor Swift breakup songs than Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas,” but she forges ahead to her childhood home for a family holiday.
Then she wakes up the next morning… to find that it’s Christmas again. And the morning after that. And the morning after that. And the morning after that. It’s Groundhog Day, but with British Christmas pudding and awkward family dinner conversations. The only bright side? Continually running into childhood neighbor-slash-unrequited crush Dev day after day, Christmas after Christmas.
This was a cute and fun read to kick off my holiday reads. Gwen, our protagonist, has a very Mindy Lahiri (a la The Mindy Project) vibe to her - I loved it and it gave a few major laugh out loud moments, but for anyone not a fan of a character that throws a lot of pop culture references out, she may not be for you.
I found this read to be fairly slow in the middle, where I almost screamed for Gwen (and maybe myself trying to get through the book) at one point when she woke up again to find it Christmas morning yet again.
Just released for this Christmas season last week, a big thank you for this digital ARC to @harpercollins360 via @netgalley. #gifted
I did not finish this one. Wasn’t connecting with any of the characters and just generally not into it. If you’re a fan of this author’s work, you may enjoy, but not for me.
2.5-*maaaybe*3stars This just wasn’t my cup of tea. Unfortunately, the book I read previous to this was a similar personalitied character, the sibling who was the peacekeeper and tried to be the good child since her sibling(s) were more difficult. That, and for some reason, British authors and I do not get along most times, however this book was way more tolerable than many. I did laugh out loud. It took almost a quarter of the book to get to the main story line, and once there it went a bit faster. In the end, it was just okay.
The Christmas Wish follows Gwen who is looking forward to Christmas with her family and forgetting about her job for a while. She wakes up on Christmas day and everything seems fine. But then she runs into her next door crush Dev, the family starts fighting, and she wants nothing more for it to be over. So Gwen goes to sleep hoping to move on from Chrsistmas. However, when she wakes up she finds out it is Christmas again and she keeps reliving the same day over and over again. When Gwen tries to figure out what is going on she gets closer to Dev and that is the only bright spot of this Christmas hell.
This was a cute Christmas read. I was looking forward to reading this one because I really enjoyed On a Night Like This by this author. I will say nothing really stood out to me with this book but I still liked it. I think this would be a really good Christmas movie. This is also a great book to read to get you in the Christmas mood. Thank you so much NetGalley, Lindsey Kelk, and Harper Collins for the ARC of this book,
This brilliantly written British romantic comedy was just perfection! It centers around Gwen Baker who is at a huge crossroads in her life. Recently separated from her long-time boyfriend, on leave from her prestigious work at a law firm and headed home for Christmas with her family. She finds herself stuck in a time loop of repeating Christmas Day (think Groundhogs Day) where she must figure out how to get to tomorrow.
My favorite part about this story, besides the heart warming humor, is that it focuses on Gwen facing herself. The things in her life that have fallen apart, asking herself what she wants to do with her life, and watching Gwen transform from this unhappy woman into a shining star. This story really helped to remind me that living every day to our fullest and doing the things that bring us together in happiness is what it's all about.
The Christmas Wish by Lindsey Kelk is a fun, hilarious holiday read. The novel follows Gwen Baker as she returns home after finding out that her boyfriend was cheating on her and her career stalling out. Gwen hopes to rest and sort out her life, only to find she's stuck in a time loop.
Like most of Kelk's novels, there is a romance involved, but it always comes secondary to the journey of the main character. If you want romance as the focus of your read, this book probably isn't for you. The novel is more about Gwen's journey to rediscover herself and mend the parts of herself that she feels are broken. However, like all of Kelk's novels, the book is delightful and so, so funny. If you enjoy family drama and fantastic side characters, this is a must read!
This is a wonderful read for the holiday season and Gwen is so relatable with all of her self-doubt and the arguments that come up during the holiday with family. I highly recommend this book to readers of fiction and anyone who loved a good journey of self-discovery novel.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In this Groundhog Day retelling, Gwen becomes trapped in a loop reliving a disastrous Christmas Day spent with her family. She spends the repeated day trying to grant each person in her family’s Christmas wish so she can escape the loop. While doing so she learns about her family members and herself and comes to terms with where her life is at the moment. As this has a romantic sub-plot, she also works up the courage to show her feelings to her childhood friend, Dev.
This was a light and entertaining enough read. I have read several Groundhog Day retellings and the ones centered around Christmas always just work. I will say I didn’t find the book “hilarious” like the blurb claims it to be, but it also wasn’t too serious. I do think that is quite a stretch to categorize this as a romance rather than a women’s fiction. Yes she does get a HEA, but the book as whole is about Gwen and her journey while Dev is barely present. Overall this was a quick and fun read that would be a great way to spend a few hours during the holidays.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper 360 for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Gwen’s life is all but falling apart. She’s lost her boyfriend, is having troubles at work and now has to spend the holidays at her childhood home with her entire family and a smile pasted on her face. If all of that wasn’t enough, her hot next door neighbor, who she’s secretly had a crush on since childhood, is back in town…
Kelk has constructed a world with relatable and likable characters who are embedded into the storyline spectacularly. You have the not-so-perfect main character, the overbearing mom, the out-of-touch father, and the seemingly perfect best friend, and next door neighbor, from her childhood. While these characters are a tale as old as time, Kelk writes them in a way that makes it seem like it’s the first time you’ve ever encountered characters of this construct. The most likable character? Gwen’s cousin, Mateo. He is the cheerleader you never knew you needed, the rock Gwen needs in the disaster that is her life, and is the absolute perfect comedic relief.
If you are expecting an effortless read, some laughs and a book that reads like a warm hug…you came to the right place. I mean, who doesn’t want a retelling of Groundhog’s Day, but with Christmas? The book draws you in with banter, between Gwen and Mateo, and doesn’t let you go until the last page. The way Kelk is able to maintain this feeling throughout the whole book is what made this book for me. The flow of conversation, the perfected banter, and the “oh my gosh” moments Gwen was constantly thrown into had me cackling from start to finish. This is a feel-good, happily ever after and is the perfect Christmas read.
Gwyn, a 32 year old corporate lawyer returns to her childhood home for Christmas and gets stuck in a seemingly endless time loop. Trying to escape the loop, she reconnects with every member of her family in ways she hasn’t done in years. A heartwarming story of the importance of family, friendship and being true to yourself. The Christmas Wish was a delightful read to start the Christmas romcom season.
Great read to get me excited for Christmas!! I was initially apprehensive of the “Groundhog Day” aspect from the description, but it was actually fine. The romance was cute & I loved how chaotic and fun the story was! A December must read for sure.
