I gave this book a 4 when i got done reading it and its been a week and i forgot what its about sadly im taking this down to 3. I liked it at one point but being forgettable the plot really keep me interested
3.5 stars! i was curious whether i would be into this and maybe i carried that hesitancy a little into my reading.
it was a cute read but not quite my favorite book ever. i found it hard to find margot likeable. by the end, i was able to but the beginning and middle had me on the fence about her. though i can find her relatable, i just didn’t love her. i was very much into declan, he was really sweet!
the pacing was a little slow for me but it balanced out with the amount of plot that was going on. i didn’t find myself as invested in their relationship so the plot felt slow. it was otherwise a quick read with great character development. i know some people hate a 3rd act breakup but sometimes i like the reality of it before the romance novel HEA.
it was a promising debut from miller and i’m interested to see what they’ll write in the future. thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest opinion!
I absolutely ate this one up! This was a super cute romcom with a wedding background (which I always enjoy). Margo is the maid of honor at her best friend’s/podcast partner’s wedding and the best man just so happens to be her high school nemesis Declan. They are forced to spend time together while helping their friends with various wedding activities and in the process catch some feelings.
Overall I thought Margo and Declan had great chemistry!! Their banter was so fun to read and I absolutely love books set during weddings. It adds a bit of extra magic! I definitely recommend.
Margo & Jo host a podcast about hooking up without catching feelings. However Jo announces she’s getting married and Margo struggles to maintain their listeners.
This was a cute Romcom. Enemies to lovers, a little spice and a great setting.
Margo and Jo run a successful podcast all about hooking up without catching feelings. But when Jo decides to get married and take an all expenses paid wedding trip courtesy of one of their sponsors, the future of the podcast, and Margo is very uncertain. Looking for a new direction, Margo considers breaking all of her own dating rules as an experiment for the podcast. To make it even better, she plans on using the groom’s best man, Declan, for her experiment. They did not get along at all in high school so she knows she is safe from catching feelings, until she does.
Margo’s growth is what makes this story. I didn’t love her at first but her character development was just so good and I really wanted her to find happiness. This book was a cute, fun read. Between a super sweet love interest (Declan was the best), fun pieces of podcast transcriptions and text messages, and the amazing setting, this made for a great beach read.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advance copy.
I enjoyed this fun romance and I really liked Declan's personality. He was funny, sweet, and strong, and a great fit for Margo. It was interesting to read about podcasters/influencers and the possible ramifications from putting so much out there in the socialmediaverse. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the fantastic @karissavacker and she nailed it again. A thoroughly enjoyable beach or poolside read for the summer.
Several seasons into their hit podcast about being single, Margo’s co-host Jo has thrown out all the rules and gotten engaged. Margo finds herself on an island for two weeks leading up to the big day juggling wedding sponsors, disappointed fans, and her nemesis-aka-best-man Declan.
It took me a little bit to warm up to this story since Margo seems to let Jo walk all over her. But I really loved Margo’s growth throughout the story, and by the end she had completely charmed me.
I absolutely loved Declan. He had the perfect mix of confidence, nerdyness and humor, and I love that he knew what he wanted and wouldn’t settle for less.
The setting of Catalina Island was perfect for this story! It is a somewhat contained setting which gave it an intimate feel, and I love the idea of an island wedding.
I can’t wait to see what comes next from Kristyn!
Thank you to St Martin’s Griffith for an eARC. All thoughts are my own.
A really quick read that will most definielty get you out of a book slump. Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is an enemies to lovers book with a grumpy sunshine vibe. It took me a bit to feel Margo's vibes but once i did i was hooked.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, & St. Martin’s Griffin for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I thought the commentary on being single and navigating the dating life in the digital age was pretty spot on and relatable, even as someone who isn’t currently single. The pacing was great, making it a quick and enjoyable read, perfect for the summer. Plus, we LOVE a good enemies to lovers. It never fails to satisfy, especially when the chemistry is hot — and Margo and Declan had excellent chemistry. And who doesn’t love a destination wedding? I’ve been wanting to go to Catalina for forever and this made me feel like I was there — and convinced me a trip needs to be in my near future.
As far as debuts go, this is a solid one, and I’m really excited for what this author writes next.
Margo runs a podcast with her best friend Jo. The two have come up with seven rules to not get too attached while dating. But then Jo decides to get married and Margo is left to come up with the content for their final season. At Jo’s destination wedding she runs into her high school nemesis, Declan, and hatches a plan to break all the rules and track it for the podcast. But Margo starts to catch real feelings for Declan and can’t use him in that way.
This was a very enjoyable read. Perfect for summer reading on the beach! Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for the egalley in exchange for my honest review.
An amazing debut book from this author! There’s nothing like a good enemies to lovers and this did not disappoint. I didn’t immediately connect with Margo but eventually you could see she was insecure and afraid to fail just like most people. I also loved how the book heavily incorporated social media into it and really made it pertinent to the story line as so many books make it seem as if social media doesn’t exist.
Cute romance story about two best friends who start a podcast about not getting too attached and being in charge in relationship. This all changes when one finds the love of her life while the other is unsure what to do from here during Jos all expense paid wedding Go is trying to figure out how to break the rules and unexpectedly falls for someone she knew in high school.
This sweet book took me on a unique journey into the world of podcasting. I adored Margo, who defied her aversion to relationships and found unexpected love. The slow-burn romance with Declan was worth the wait, their banter delightful. Their shared history added charm. However, I wished for more conflict between Margo and Jo, their resolution felt too quick. Overall, an enjoyable read!
A romance novel with some miscommunication and some personal growth. I found Margo’s commitment to her lack of commitment somewhat unbelievable at first, but as the story progressed I grew to like her and understand her a bit more. Declan was a lovable geek who I would have enjoyed getting to know more about. I felt like we just grazed the surface of his story. I was glad to go along on their journey and get to know them. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Cute. I love high school flames. It just brings back alll the feels. I appreciated the self discovery within this book, and even though I don’t love the trope it felt relatable.
This book was pretty good. I felt like it could have used a little bit more editing or revising. I felt like so much of the book was spent talking about how Margo and Declan didn’t get along that it was a little hard to believe when they got together. I also didn’t really like Margo as a character until about halfway through the book. The first part she really got on my nerves and I thought she wasn’t the best friend to Jo.
All of that aside the last half of the book is really good. Margo kind of redeems herself and I liked the way the book wrapped up.
Solid 3 stars. I would put this at the top of my TBR but I wasn’t mad I read it.
Influencers. Wedding shenanigans. A little mystery.
Go (Margo) and Jo host a podcast centered around their dating advice: don't because being single is better and stress about the "7 Rules for Breaking Hearts". When Jo reveals that she is to be married, the girls must step back from their podcast to reassess their viewpoints. During a 2 week vacation leading up to Jo's wedding, Margo decides that she wants to break all of their rules in order to prove that they work in keeping your heart safe. What Margo doesn't count on is catching legitimate feelings for the best man, Declan - also her former rival as a kid.
Overall this was a little hard to get through. I felt like Margo and Declan lacked any chemistry, and the conflict between them seemed incredibly superficial. Margo is a pretty self-centered person and can't accept that her best friend has found someone to love. Many of the side characters also felt like they didn't even need to be there and added nothing to the story.
On a positive note: the banter in this was funny and it was a super quick, easy read.
Thank you to #netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and St. Martin's Griffin for an eArc of this book! All opinions are my own!
It was a nice change to have the FMC as the commitment-phobe for a change, it is almost always the MMC. The beachy setting was perfect as a summer read and the podcasting social media aspect was interesting.
I really enjoyed this book and the characters. Very well written. Didn't want this story to end. So many sweet moments were also added to this book along with some drama and some adventures. Loved it.
So we have Margo (Mo) and Jo they are best friends who also work together on their podcast about relationships and rules on how to not get hurt kinda. Jo did something crazy (or at least crazy in the eyes of the podcast) and fell in love, now going to get married. Margo has all kinds of different feelings about this and how it's going to affect their job/lives but in the end, she is happy for her friend. Margo is the maid of Honor. Now enters the Best Man, Declan who gets on Margo's nerves but boy is there a ton of chemistry there and they don't even see it at first. Margo has to decide if her rules are worth breaking and give up her podcast revolving around her rules for breaking hearts. Will Margo's heart get broken?
This book was different as not only did it give us their romantic story but it also added the podcast and comments that were being posted. We get a twist in this book 3/4th about the way in (at the wedding) and you will not believe it.
The humor in this book is amazing, so many moments where I actually laughed out loud.
The trope is enemies-to-lovers with a touch of close proximity bc they are on an island and have to work to get together for their friends' wedding.
I am so glad to have read this book (ARC) thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for this opportunity. The review above is my own, honest and voluntary.
Such a fun enemies-to-lovers romance that sucks you in from the very beginning! Between the friendship plot + incredible sense-of-place developed by the author, time flew for me when reading this book. Kristyn J. Miller has a gift for character development, and I can't wait to see what is next from her!
