Description
"A fresh take on modern romance." - Lauren Blakely, #1 New York Times bestselling author
Love breaks all the rules.
Margo Anderson is sworn off commitment. Alongside her best friend Jo, she runs a viral podcast featuring rules for hooking up without catching feelings. So when Jo surprises her by deciding to get married and takes up a sponsor’s offer to host an all-expenses-paid wedding trip on Catalina Island, they have the whole internet to answer to.
In a scramble for content to appease their disappointed listeners, Margo cooks up a social experiment: break all her own dating rules, just to prove that it’s a bad idea. And she’s found the best man for the job in the groom’s best friend and her old high school nemesis, Declan Walsh. He may be easier on the eyes than Margo remembered, but he’s sure to be as smug and annoying as he was before. There is no chance Margo will ever catch feelings for him…until she does.
The more time they spend together through cake tastings and wedding party activities, Margo can’t ignore their obvious spark, and she may actually be enjoying getting to know Declan. But can she let go of the rules to let him in?

This author is definitely one to watch! I loved her writing style.
This was a delightful romcom that I devoured easily. I loved the setting on Catalina Island and the glimpse into the pressures of the social media world. Margo and Declan are complete opposites, but we all know what that means…💗 This one is full of humor, emotion, and character growth.
Also, Declan = Swoon 😍
Thank you for my gifted copy for an honest review
Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts by Kristyn J. Miller is an instant classic romcom. I was a little skeptical about the podcaster/influencer aspect (there are a few interactions Margo has with bartenders that left a bad taste in my mouth. My day job is bartending so I might be a little biased on that one) but Miller does a great job creating multi-faceted characters, avoiding falling into the trap of stereotypical superficial influencers.
I swear I was put through almost every emotion with this book. It was funny, it was frustrating (in a good way), it was heartwarming, and there were even moments that made me sad (Margo’s reasons for singledom were so relatable it hurt).
Miller’s debut was such a fun read that I found myself screaming (metaphorically), laughing out loud, throwing my kindle, and staying up until 3am just to finish and make sure Margo got her happy ending.
For fans of Emily Henry & How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is a must-read.
A great read by a debut author: Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is sweet and endearing, with plenty of tension and just a touch of spice. I loved it!
Well this was such a refreshing and cute romance novel! I loved the out-of-the-norm details of these characters- a podcaster who was a Tuba player and a guy who works at Nasa- you’ve never read that one before!
Margo and Declan were high school enemies, or at least that what Margo thought. Meeting again at their best friends’ wedding, Margo and Declan get the chance to reconnect. However, Margo isn’t supposed to connect with anyone let alone reconnect. With a two week paid vacation for her taking, Margo rediscovers herself all with the help of Declan- and maybe finds a little more along the way.
I loved every single part of this book. Margo and Declan (and even Jo) were such great characters to read and get to know. And I mean who can’t pass up a good romance ;)
Thank you to St.Martin’s Griffin, Kristyn Miller, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC! This one is a keeper!
Such a great rom-com in the spirit of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” - kind of - if it were a podcast. Two besties have reached influencer status with rules to protect their hearts and keep the dating field level. Until one of them breaks all their rules and falls in love.
Margo and Josephine (Go and Jo) are off to Catalina island for two weeks to plan and host Jo’s wedding, while Go doubles down on the rules, and her feelings on an old high school class clown / nemesis. We all know how this is going to end, but it is such a fun trip watching it all unfold.
The dialog and banter are fantastic. I was reading this on a plane and was so caught up, I was laughing out loud and my face was showing all the emotions. My seat mate actually said, “must be a good book!” It is!
The characters are well-developed and layered giving the reader something to root for. The story also does a nice job of talking through image and reputation - does it matter?
This is a great debut and will fit right in with other rom-com favs from authors like Emily Henry or Sarah Adams.
Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts was a delightful rom com that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun read with a swoon worthy love interest!
Go (Margo) and Jo are podcast hosts that talk all about being single and not catching feelings. When Jo decides to get married, Margo is thrown off her game and feeling resentful as the wedding vacation begins. Her high school nemesis, Declan, just happens to be the best man in the wedding. As they get to know one another, she realizes that her original assumptions about him may have been off base.
I thought the podcast angle was fun, but was glad that the book was more focused on Margo developing feelings for a man for the first time in her life. Her personal growth throughout the book was interesting to watch, and I was really rooting for her and Declan after a major misunderstanding threatened to derail them. I adored Declan, a study of opposites with his nerdy side and his take charge side. Their chemistry was on fire and I loved the moments focused on this pair!
This is a well written debut novel that I read in a day. Compulsively readable, entertaining, and will be a perfect beach read with its May release date!
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Griffin for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Margo and her best friend, Jo, have a female empowerment podcast with Seven Rules to stay single. Jo has recently found her person and is getting married on Catalina Island, and Margo is her maid of honor. Together, they have to figure out a "spin" for their podcast to enable Jo to change her mind about being a lifelong single and for Margo to continue to move forward.
Jo's fiance's best man, Declan, who is Margo's sworn enemy from high school. A redheaded NASA engineer, is also on the island for the wedding, and sparks fly between him and Margo. She decides as an experiment to break her rules and try to get Declan to fall for her. What results is a story that kept me reading constantly until the end!
Loved this one! Will keep my eye out for Ms. Miller's work in the future.
