Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts by Kristyn J. Miller is a “drop-everything” kind of book!
What can I say other than that this debut rom-com blew me away!
First, I loved the podcast angle here. It’s one of my favorite tropes and Miller did such a fantastic job here.
I found myself completely immersed in Margo’s world and never wanted to leave.
Declan and Margo had such chemistry and growth throughout.
The character development in this book is fantastic. Absolutely amazing.
Kristyn J. Miller effortlessly creates characters that are both flawed and lovable, and a romance that feels both heightened and real.
The romance at the center of this story is perfection.
When I say I couldn’t get enough I seriously mean it. I still can’t believe this is Miller’s debut title.
All of these elements gave the book a very realistic feel, but it is fun because of the chemistry and sparks flying! I devoured this book in two sittings partly because I truly could not get enough.
If you are looking for a book that has a whole lot of humor, swoony romantic vibes, fantastic main and supporting characters, and a whole lot of heart, this is the book for you.
This was a very charming and cute story and I am glad I had the opportunity to read it.
I’m so excited for this author! If she created something this phenomenal her first go around I can’t wait to see what she creates next!

What a fun read! I really enjoyed the setting of this with the wedding and the podcast. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Margo in the beginning but I ended up really falling for her. And Declan! Declan was 100% the perfect cinnamon roll of a man. And no, that’s not a ginger joke. I loved that freckled red head with all my being. I loved all the history and the funny high school back stories between these two, and I really liked the character growth that Margo goes through. Jo was an amazing best friend and I hope every person out there has a friend they can count on like that!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early review copy of this book!
I tried to give this a chance, but these characters were really not doing it for me. The main character was honestly too mean and had such strong pick-me energy that I was struggling with the book being only from her perspective. I am learning I don't enjoy reading about influencer culture, so if you don't mind that, this book may work out better for you.
This was a great, atmospheric romance. I loved Declan as a love interest… he was sweet and likable from the start. Jo sometimes irritated me a bit- I felt like her relationship with Go started very strong but kind of fizzled at the end. The sister was kind of random too- seemed like she was just thrown in there. I did really enjoy myself though— overall I recommend this one. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the e—arc.
Margo and Declan where opposites destined to be together and I LOVE them. Margo produces a podcast with her best friend Jo about a set of rules that keep them from catching feelings and getting their hearts broken. After Jo "breaks" the rules and gets engaged Margo is trying to come up with a plan for the next season of the podcast. At Jo's destination wedding Margo is reunited with Declan, her "tormentor" from high school (really he just played a couple pf pranks on her). Margo comes up with the idea to throw the rules and caution to the wind to prove what a bad idea breaking the rules can be. With some unexpected obstacles along the way Margo catches feelings for Declan.
I loved the dynamic between Declan and Margo and I really felt for Margo and the stress behind her podcast ending because her best friend fell in love. That being said, Margo made me crazy with her decision making sometimes and my hopeless romantic heart couldn't handle her not instantly opening up to Declan. Even though my heart was hurting, it built the suspense and created for a better story!
Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts follows two influencers with a successful podcast titled "seven rules for breaking hearts." When one of the girls decides to go and fall in love, what happens to their legacy?
The followers are hateful, they feel duped, and want answers; but the content is potentially over with only Margo (Go) able to keep the rules alive!
Jo has a sponsored wedding at a luxurious resort and the best man is Margo's high school enemy; the guy who put whipping cream in her tuba. The red-headed Nasa engineer, Declan, is hotter than ever and the perfect story line for Season Seven of the podcast. Declan has ignited a flame in Margo and her curiosity may catch her feelings, or potential podcast content. Margo begins to question all the rules and moves into unchartered territory. Will she ditch the Seven Rules to win her enemies heart?
Such an easy and fun read, perfect for picking up on a holiday or when you need to get out of a reading slump.

No thank you to any politically driven undertones. I read to escape and this felt like I was reading someone’s opinion.
Exotic location, enemies to lovers trope and wedding shennanigans - it was a perfect beach read! I loved the rules (New Rules by Dua Lipa would be playing in the movie trailer over this scene) and I enjoyed watching Margo try not to fall in love. It was a smart choice to make Declan a blast from the past instead of someone new because we got to learn more about why Margo doesn't believe in love.
This was really cute and a super easy read. I thought the characters were well-developed and loveable. The MC's love grew naturally and you could feel the chemistry. I liked the podcast transcripts and pop culture references. I felt like the conflict at the end wasn't forced like in some rom-coms, and Declan had a real reason to get angry. I wish it didn't all have to happen on Jo's wedding day (I mean, she deserved to have the day without drama), but I liked the friendship between the two of them. Definitely would make for a fun, quick beach read!

First of all I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with this EArc in exchange for a honest review!!!!!!!!
This book, was a wild ride for me. I went into this book expecting it to be a romcom like any other romcom, but once I got into the book, I felt like I needed to shift my perspective. This to me, felt like a story between about Margo, and her growth and journey into accepting love, and change that can be hard to go through. Obviously there was romance, and it is a love story, but I definitely leans towards a slow burn with a big focus on Margo and her character development. Margo at times was a pretty frustrating character to read about, I for sure went back and forth on whether I liked her or not for part of the book.
Margo and Declan were really IT for me. I am obsessed with a shy man who blushes, and Declan was the perfect man. I felt like I was being rewarded for the first half of the book, whenever we had a Margo and Declan moment because the chemistry between the two was amazing, and seemed so real.
Overall, I really did like this book. The writing was amazing, I loved the style and the banter and flirting between our main characters. I will say, it felt a little slow and seemed to drag on at parts, so it took me about a week to get through this book. However, I loved Declan, and I grew to love Margo, and really enjoyed their story and their ending. And I loved seeing Margo's character development throughout the book, and who she grows to become.
Margo Anderson & Jo Hernandez have been best friends since the first day of school, when Margo made an effort to help Jo get past her tears over being left alone, at school. Since that time, they have been inseparable and ultimately began a podcast together entitled Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts, which became a “twenty-something’s boot camp for hooking up without getting hurt.” After 6 seasons of the podcast they have run into an issue, because Jo is getting married, which goes against everything they have said on-air for so many years. They need a new idea for content, and they need it fast. They are having a two-week vacation and wedding at a destination that has been handed to them by sponsors in exchange for some advertising on their podcast. Thus, they can’t just quit the show, or they will owe a ton of money to the sponsor. While trying to figure out what to do, a new challenge arrives in the form of Declan, who Margo can’t stand after pranks he pulled on her in high school. However, he is not quite the person she remembers, and getting to know him puts another fly in the ointment for Margo… as she doesn’t quite know what to do with this version of Declan. Could Jo’s wedding change everything for Margo, including her view on dating?
I devoured this novel in a day on a very rocky, stomach turning day at sea. Seven Rules helped to take my mind off of my roiling stomach and put it on Margo and the other delightful characters that Kristyn Miller created. This book is a fun, easy, relaxing read, with a story that keeps you engaged and made it impossible for this reader to put the book down. As I was nearing the end, I began to prolong completing the book, as I didn’t want the ride to end. Miller created a romance that you could enjoy and root for, with sex scenes that left some things up to the readers' imagination but enough description to satiate any reader's desire to truly get into the couple's interactions,
An excellent beach or sick day read. Extremely enjoyable and satisfying!

Modern and relevant, this is a great romance! Loved the energy between the main characters. They had quick witted dialogue and the story was smooth from start to finish. A great addition to anyone’s library who loves enemy to lovers stories
I love this little romcom!! When anyone asks me for a recommendation this will be one of them! If you’re looking for a quick read with full of love and swoon worthy moments then this is it!

Margo and her best friend Jo run a successful podcast titled Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts. The podcast follows seven rules for single women who are in the dating scene. The rules are to help make sure women don't get hurt by men who are players. For their final season they announced Jo is getting married and there's been backlash from their listeners. To figure out a way to keep viewers, Margo comes up with an idea to break all seven rules and see how that goes as a last hoorah for the podcast. What she doesn't expect is her feelings to change towards a high school rival in this enemies to lovers story.
Margo is a little bit unlikeable in the first half but I began to root for her and Declan after the turning point. The story is predictable but adorable. I liked the writing and the friendship between Jo and Margo. Margo has to deal with how her life is going to change after Jo is married. The podcast is shutting down, she has to find a new place to stay, the dynamic of their friendship will be different, and just figuring her life out in general. I did enjoy Margo's development and how Kristyn J. Miller wrapped up the ending.
Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is a cute, summery beach read with a fun romance. I think many rom-com lovers will have fun with this one.
3.5 rounded to 4 stars
This romantic comedy has a fun premise: two girls, Jo and Go (short for Margo), have hit it big with their podcast about embracing the single lifestyle by encouraging women to act like guys who are players. Their golden rule is to have fun, keep feelings out of the mix, and move on to the next guy. The story opens with Jo's surprise destination wedding, being paid for by the podcast's sponsors. Watching the blindsided Margo navigate the situation as she tries to save the podcast in light of Jo's decision is a lot of fun, especially when her childhood frenemy arrives on the scene as one of the groomsmen. I like the story's humor, and Declan is a love interest to root for; unfortunately, Margo is much less likable for the first half of the novel. I often found her quite irritating and didn't really become invested in her as a character or in them as a couple until well into the book. I did enjoy the story a lot more from that point on, but I'm not sure I'd have stuck with it if I weren't reading it through NetGalley. I'm glad I did, though. The writing flows well and the setting, Catalina Island in California, is unique. Margo's redemption as a character by the novel's end is satisfying, too. I'd definitely pick up another book by this author.
This book was so much cuter than I expected it to be! I had concerns, as a podcaster, about reading a romance about a podcaster. But when I got past all of the initial "stuff" about being a podcaster, the romance was just fun and fast paced and easy to binge. I don't love secrets and blown up publicly issues between the main characters, but this was just soft enough to work for me. I thought Declan was adorable and watching Margo grow as she gets to know him was definitely rewarding.
Margo and Jocelyn, Go and Jo, run a podcast called “Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts.” The breaking hearts part is more of a marketing gimmick, as Margo explains, but the podcast was created in response to the double standards society holds between casual hookups of men and women, and to help women hook up without catching feelings. However, Jo catches feelings. She’s getting married to Peter during a two week trip paid by a sponsor. When things start to go south for the podcast, Margo decides she’s going to break the rules for two weeks to prove breaking the rules isn’t a good idea. She chooses to break the rules with Declan, the best man and her “enemy” in high school. Little does she know, he had a thing for her all throughout high school. Will Margo catch feelings and let Declan in?
For me, this was a 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I had a hard time getting into it at first and didn’t find myself fully invested until around 30% into the novel. I found Margo to be a little immature. I can understand being afraid of commitment, but I don’t think it was right for her to still go after Declan for her experiment when she knew he wasn’t interested in casual relationships and one-night stands. She was playing with his feelings and that just didn’t sit well for me, even if you could tell she had feelings for him and just wouldn’t admit it. She ended up redeeming herself and I enjoyed her character as she developed throughout the novel. I absolutely adored Declan. Their romance was both sweet and spicy—my favorite. There were some things that I had questions about that I wish got fleshed out a bit. Margo and Jo have a pretty big fight at the wedding and it gets glossed over pretty quickly. I would have liked to see how this played out rather than everything just going back to normal between them.
Overall, this was a solid debut from Miller. I enjoyed her writing style. A great read for the summer that comes out on May 16!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for my honest review!
Solid 3 stars. Enjoyable and a quick read!
I really like Margo as the main character. She is sex positive and doesn’t apologize for who she is. I thought Declan challenged her in an interesting way. Could I see the third act break up coming the entire time? Yes. <shrug> I still enjoyed it!

Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is a good example of self discovery through a romance. A fun, light read that captures the moment in your 20s when you realize you can change your mind about anything.
The main character, Go/Margo, is...unlikable and a bit selfish for 85% of the book. Given her age, her attitude was immature in more than one circumstance. The story centers around a 2-week combination vacation and wedding for Go's best fried and co-podcast host, Jo. There was more than one scene where Go's actions as both Jo's best friend and maid of honor were far from being a good and supportive friend. If the book had room for more drama, a conflict between Go & Jo would have been inevitable.
Over the course of the events before, during, and after Jo's wedding, Go learns a lot about herself while realizing it's never too late to change her ways if she wants to.
The bottom line is while you may not like Go, you'll likely enjoy the storyline and you'll definitely love Declan.
Thank you Net Galley for a digital ARC of this book for reviewing.
Jo and Go are hosts of the popular podcast, Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts. One tiny problem, Jo is getting married and they have to figure out what the future of the podcast will look like. Meanwhile, they’re spending the two weeks before the big event with the rest of the wedding party on beautiful Catalina Island, all expenses paid. Oh, and Declan Walsh, Margo’s high school nemesis is the best man.
I liked Margo’s character, mainly because it didn’t take her too long to figure out she was only hurting herself by following the 7 Rules. Loved Declan’s character. Overall, the story wasn’t anything too out of the ordinary, but it was fun read. 3.5/5 Stars
