Alice Hunter does it again! Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.
If you haven’t read her other books then you won’t know that there’s a Serial Killer’s husband and a Serial Killer’s daughter. Both books have the most incredible twists in.
What I love about this book was the false sense of security.
Anna is a respected teacher and she is happily married. But she did not have the happiest of childhoods.
She was in a children’s home with her little brother and they played games to keep themselves occupied. Only, her brother developed an unhealthy obsession with the games and his behaviour got out of hand.
In the present day there is a murder inquiry and one that Anna might be able to help with. After all, it’s her brother that has been doing the killings.
Can Anna solve the clues before he strikes again? Is everyone who they say they are? Who can be trusted in this game of lies and deception?
I’m still reeling from the ending. One that will keep you on your toes until the final line.
A brilliant story.
‘Every serial killer had to start with one murder. And every serial killer needed a calling card.’
Anna Price spent her childhood in the care system. Despite that, she has made what seems to be a perfect life for herself: happily married and working as a teacher at an exclusive school. Then the police come calling. Detective Inspector Walker tells Anna that her brother Henry, whom she’s not seen for years, is a wanted serial killer. For the past three years, a woman has been murdered on two specific dates. One of those dates is Anna’s birthday. The second date is only days away, and the police are seeking Anna’s help to catch Henry before another woman is murdered.
Unsettled, Anna heads to work but an incident outside the school sees her suspended. And, just when you’d think that things could not get any worse, Anna makes a discovery that unsettles her life either further. Meantime, envelopes are left on her doorstep. Back in the children’s home where she and Henry lived, they used to ply a game called ‘The Hunt’. The Hunt required Anna to follow clues left by Henry, with any failure to do so having consequences. There’s something in Anna’s past that she desperately wants to keep secret, but doing so may place her own life in danger.
And at this stage in the novel, the pace of the novel picks up and, for me at least, the wheels fall off. Why? I was expecting the story to develop rather than rely on being propelled by successive surprises. I found none of the characters likeable and the ending felt ridiculous.
I understand that this is the third in a series entitled ‘The Serial Killer’s Family. It is the first (and I suspect the last) I will read. If action is more important to you than logic, then you may find this story more enjoyable than I did.
Note: My thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review purposes.

Alice Hunter is my ultimate favourite author and when I got chance to read The Serial Killer's Sister I could not wait and decided to read it as my holiday read.
I loved it, in honesty not as much as her previous work but nonetheless I devoured this novel and read it in a few days.
We meet Anna, who is happily married and works as a teacher at an exclusive private school. The police visit her and let her know that her brother Henry is a serial killer and has been killing for a few years on 2 dates every year. Anna is obviously surprised and this sets off a string of events that basically ruins Anna life. Not thinking straight she tells a child off and this is caught on CCTV and Anna realises that someone is out to get her.
Anna is left some clues to start The Hunt again that she and Henry did many years ago whilst living at an orphanage school and we get an insight of what made Anna and Henry the people that they are today.
Alice Hunter's writing is brilliant, I love the way she weaves the characters backstory into the present day and we get a real feel of these people. I would love to see her novels transcend onto TV/film as they are just wonderful.
Lots of gripping thrills and the ending was something that I did not see coming at all.
Thanks to NetGalley, Alice Hunter and the publishers for allowing me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
I have read the other books in the Serial Killers series and so far, the first one was still the best. Unfortunately, the writing in this one wasn't as great. and the character lacked common sense.
I just couldn't get into this book. It was utterly predictable and I absolutely hate that in a book! I try so hard not to guess whats going to happen so get super annoyed when I do. I ultimately did just give up reading this one and didn't finish - though I dont feel like i'm missing anything.
I do appreciate the opportunity to try this book so I thank the publisher and netgalley for that. I will not be leaving reviews outside of netgalley for this one as I did not finish the book.
An interesting premise – a serial killer who has so far chosen his victims since the last 3 years on two particular dates. It is possible his sister can help find him, but she could be the next victim herself. A story let down by being sensationalist, poor procedurally and illogical in the last sections.
After spending many years at a children’s home with her brother Henry, Anna Price is now doing well in life. She is a teacher, who is respected and has a happy marriage. One day, DI Walker knocks on her door and tells her something shocking – her brother is a serial killer. He has made his last 5 kills on two particular dates, and the next one is less than a week away. Anna & Henry used to play a game ‘The Hunt’ which involves following clues, and it seems Henry is doing that with his kills. Anna finds envelopes with clues delivered to her home, and it looks like DI Walker is right – Henry wants her to find him or he will find her. The stress skyrockets for Anna as she also runs into trouble at work.
Some of the descriptions of the killings, while very few, are somewhat graphic. The story is told in two timelines. The pace is variant – starts with a bang, then builds gradually. The last sections work up a frenzied pace with revelations and twists. This part is especially poorly written and does not make any attempt to explain motives. There is not even sketchy coverage of police procedures of the previous murders and what has been uncovered thus far. The last sections leave a lot of prior events unexplained and rely simply on surprising the reader, but I had already formed my suspicions, nor am I a fan of this style.
Anna and her brother Henry were brought up in a children’s home but lost touch with one another after leaving there. Now her brother is suspected of being a serial killer and the police are hoping she can help them trace him.
This is compulsive reading. I often think I can see what’s coming but I didn’t in this one..
I’d previously enjoyed The Serial Killer’s Wife and this didn’t disappoint
4.5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley, Alice Hunter and Avon publishing for the advance copy to review.
Having read the other two in the series I was so excited to get a copy of this to read.
It did not disappoint. Super fast paced story told in dual timelines of then and now. We follow the story of Anna as her brother Henry plays a game of cat and mouse. Will Anna be the next victim?
Did not see the twists coming at all!!!
Excellent writing, enjoyable read. Would definitely recommend.
Anna Price left her life behind her when she ran away from a brutal orphans home, leaving her brother to fend for himself.
She built a good life: was married to a loving man, had a great job, was very well liked and a highly respected teacher in a private school. Everything was good.
Until it wasn't.
Until the notes with riddles started appearing - just like the ones her brother Henry used to write her when they lived in the orphans hall.
Until women started being killed and police came to her when they thought they knew who it was.
Until she became the sister of a serial killer.
Riveting suspense and totally believable characters.
Wonderful twists and turns👍
I read this in one day because I was so hooked on it. This book is part of a series, but you don't have to read the other books to understand this one. The author does an amazing job at leading the reader to thinking that they know what's going to happen but then dropping a plot twist at the least expected moment. There is a good exploration of morally gray characters. Overall, this is an amazing thriller that will keep you on the edge on your seat from the first page to the very last.
I still have chills down my spine!
Alice Hunter is such a clever writer undoubtedly due to her professional experiences as an interventions facilitator in a prison, and part of a team offering rehabilitation programmes to men serving sentences for a wide range of offences, often working with prisoners who'd committed serious violent crimes.
I am so grateful that professionals like this turn to writing books based on their experiences as it opens your eyes to a world we simply can't start to imagine or comprehend unless you have experienced it. Indeed, these criminal minds are for most part a sad product of our society and failures to take care of individuals during their impressionable young years. This professional knowledge from Alice Hunter makes some gripping reading and very insightful right to the last chapter of the book.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the copy of The Serial Killer’s Sister by Alice Hunter. I was looking forward to this book because I read and enjoyed Hunter’s previous book. I really liked this one too, but I didn’t like Anna. I didn’t understand why Anna kept going against police advice and blatantly lied to them. Maybe she thought she was saving herself, but it was annoying. The story was suspenseful and well-paced and I liked how the past timeline threw light on what was happening in the present. The ending was disappointing to me because it went on and on with a lot of explanation of what the killer had done. I really wish it had all been included as part of the story instead of torturing us with how the killer staged his victims. The very end came out of nowhere and didn’t even ring true. If you love surprising twists, you will love this book. The first twist didn’t even surprise me. Thank goodness this book is more than twists-it’s an addictive, fun read! 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

What a book, what a series, I hope everyone reads these ‘The Serial Killer’s….’ Series.
This book was just like the others, fast paced, twisty and an addictive read.
I found myself wanting to read it fast just so to find out what was going on. I didn’t see the twists coming and they are mind blowing! 🤯!
Told in Anna’s POV, it flits between present and past with her history with Henry.
I don’t want to say too much without giving any of the storyline away.
A very cunning and gripping thriller that I recommend for anyone to read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for this early release copy.
This book will be released 11th May 2023!
This was very hard to put down once I started reading it due to the fast pacing of the story and how invested I became in the outcome for Anna. The twists and turns that we were lead through with her were perfectly choreographed to lead to where the story took us without giving away the final twist unless you were looking exactly the right way at the right time!
Alice Hunter's books have been a pleasure to read in the past and this one is no different. It was very easy to read with the way it flowed between the timelines showing us what happened before merging seamlessly with what is happening now. My only thought when I finished this book was "Why didn't she say something?" but then I did remember and realise that she was trying to, Doh!
If you've not read the other books from The Serial Killer's family by this author, I highly recommend them and if you have, you know how good this read will be already!
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series and this was no exception. Gripping and pacy with a few twists and turns that all added into a great plot line. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
Having read the other books in this series I was interested to see if this one was as good. It did not disappoint. Anna's life begins to fall apart once she is contacted by the police and informed that she may the next possible target of a serial killer, whom they believe is her brother. Lots of red herrings in this very twisty psychological novel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the advance copy of this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and publishers for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Having read and loved all of the other books in "The Serial Killer's Family" series I was excited to be able to read the newest book. Personally I found this one slower paced and at times it felt like it had been padded out. At some points the dual timelines became confusing, mainly due to the lack of clear segregation, making it difficult to follow. Nonetheless, a gradual build up of suspense, with multiple twists and turns, alongside the general flow and rhythm kept me intrigued.
Overall it is a great addition to the series, although I felt it fell slightly short of the others. The shocking plot twist at the end was mind-blowing, in reflection it made sense as to why at times, the narration appears slightly evasive. 4/5 stars.
Anna and Henry have a traumatic past and were brought up in a care home. This story follows them in later life with many flashbacks to the early years. When Anna finds out that her brother is suspected of being a serial killer her life falls apart. Henry seems to be trying to ruin things for her and the detective in charge of the case is looking for details that may catch him and save another woman from being brutally murdered. Anna is reluctant to give all the details as there is a secret between her and her brother that could have a big impact on her life.
I hadn't read the first two books that proceeded this but I don;t think it made a difference to my enjoyment as it seemed to be a standalone tale. I really enjoyed this and thought the twist at the end was very good. I will definitely recommend this book and would be interesting in reading the other two.
I have read all The Serial Killer's Series and all been brilliant, think this was the most creepiest of them all. It was a fast paced thriller which kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the last page and what an ending it was, just brilliant.
All the characters were well developed and I have nothing negative to say about this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books for this fantastic ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
Anna and her brother Henry spent their childhood at Finley Hall children’s home, passing the time with a riddle based game called The Hunt. But the past is about to explode into the present when Detective Inspector Walker graces Anna’s door to inform her that Henry is wanted for the murder of five women during the last three years. They need her help to solve Henry’s riddle before it’s too late, leading Anna into a race against time to prevent another murder.
This book had short chapters making it fast paced, while the plot had just the right level of suspense to keep me intrigued. The story ran on two timelines, the past and the present, which gave a great insight to the early relationship between Henry and Anna. The icing on the cake was the double twist at the end. I didn’t see either coming and I literally gasped out loud reading the final paragraph. Bravo.
