Lovely book for young readers which would make an excellent addition to any classroom or home bookshelf.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my review.
ABC Black History and Me walks readers through an alphabet of Black History. It shares many important people with labeled pictures.
I loved this book and all the different examples that are used for the alphabet. ABC books are not easy to come up with all the letters, and I think this one did an espeically good job with the Black History component. I will be recommending this to all the young readers I know.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book is full of rhymes connected to the different letters and the words connected to the letters are more varied than the typical ABC book. There is a timeline in the back for the events and people that were in the book.
This was an interesting alphabet. It let the alphabet be the sideline to talking about what each person represented by the letter did and/or meant to people and history. It was a great primer for further interest in history.
This was a great book to read with my young nieces and nephews. Personally, my favorite part was the timeline at the end. I’m always saying how our history isn’t in the distant past. I think this was a great way to introduce children to black history. It was well written and kept the children’s attention. Just enough to encourage more question asking and learning.

All schools, libraries and homes should have a copy of this book. The art work, words and explanations were simple enough for kids and still provide lessons for adults. Would make a great bedtime story as well as quiet time book.
A fun and simple narrative, at times rhyming, to introduce young--but informative to older--readers about Black history and culture. I think it is a great book with a good flow and pictures to encourage kids to learn more about Black history and culture. It includes politicians, explorers, business people, activists, artists and so many more. It is a celebration of being Black. All people can learn something from this positive book.
I wish it was a little clearer what some of the people achieved on these pages; it is a little vague when a name is mentioned on the same page as an inventor, scientist or explorer and a picture is all that gives a hint to what they may have done. There is a timeline in the back of the book that gives a bit more detail but it is not as expansive as I would have liked. I had to look up a number of the people on the internet to really get an idea of what they had done. Also, there were one or two words I had never even heard of before and had to look up. I wonder if kids would have heard of them either.
A very enjoyable book that I would recommend for anyone. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest opinion.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This was a rhyming book that went through several notable achievements and contributions from Black Americans (at least I think they were all Americans). I'm personally not familiar with all of them, which means this book designed for young children can easily lead to me learning some new things too. The rhymes flowed really well and never felt forced, which is always a plus for me.
The illustrations in this book were colorful and varied, showing us the various people being discussed. The names of the notable Black Americans felt almost hidden, without actually being hidden, kind of like watermarks almost. They weren't always in the same spot on the page, and it made the book feel a little more interactive trying to find them for each person mentioned.
It was a quick read with each page only have a couple lines of text to relate to the letter featured. It's a book that I could definitely read a few times, especially since the rhymes flowed so well. It's definitely a great book to read to your child, especially during Black History Month. Overall I give it 4.98 out of 5 stars.
My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.
Received for review: I received an advanced copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review, nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I enjoyed this one. It's a simple board book meant for young readers, so there is not a lot of detail on any given page. However, I enjoyed this simple book that showed the variety and expansiveness of Black history. I enjoyed the illustrations as well. I think this could be a good book to give young readers and expose them to Black history.
Pages: about 32 pages.

thank you for this amazing book, I will for sure buy it for kids around me because every children should know the amazing historical figures this book is about!
This is a good primer for young people just starting to learn about the history and accomplishments of African-Americans. It is, however, a little wordy and the rhymes don't flow super well. I don't see this being a popular book with young children, but perhaps for early elementary it might be a good conversation starter.
This book highlights so many important members of the Black community and why they are so important, as well as discussing things like hair, knowledge, laughter, melanin, NYC, teachers, and more! The timeline in the back provided a way to enhance the story by giving children some insight and specific names to attach importance to. I can't wait to read this to my students!
ABC Black History and Me has gorgeous illustrations and packs so much great content into the classic board book style.
This follows the same ABC rhythm that we see in a lot of books. It has bright colors and lots of different things on the page that can make reading so much more fun. It’s a great mix of common words that a lot of kids would know and some more precise vocabulary. That’s great to introduce some of the more complex pieces in an easy to understand format.
It also highlights many individuals in Black History. It includes a timeline at the end that helps you walk through all of the different time periods discussed in the book.
Often times these types of books are meant for older students, but this one in particular is perfect for young children. I could even see my 14 month old nephew enjoy this book. It would be a perfect addition to his library.
This book is wonderful. It contains people, places, concepts & events relating to black history. It's perfect for children of all races. After the ABCs it has a little timeline of black history. The art is cute. I would purchase a physical copy of this book.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley
This is a great book for young children. The colours are vibrant and the illustrations are engaging. Each page has a short verse on a subject, and the names of some people who are famed for that subject. As a non-child, it gave me information that will promote more research into some of these historical figures who I hadn't heard of before. For my toddler, it was a great introduction to Black History Month. The last page with the timeline was an excellent reference and really tied everything together.
My only comments would be that sometimes the rhymes were a little awkward, and (spoiler alert? Is that a thing for board books?) xenial was a new word for me -- I would've loved to have the definition in the book instead of googling it.
Thank you to netgalley for an advance ecopy for review.
I absolutely love these types of books. It's true I am not exactly the target demographic, as I am not a young child, but I still really enjoyed this book. Its educational and highlights amazing Black men and women like Maya Angelou, Ruby Bridges, Barack Obama, and Wilma Rudolph. It is an excellent introduction to black history for young readers.
The illustrations are beautiful and each page has a sentence containing a rhyme that explains the page. It also has the names written next to the people they highlight throughout the book. At the ending, there is a timeline that organizes the information contained on the A to Z pages.
This book is so important not just for black children, but I believe it is beneficial for children of other races as well. Too often black history is glossed over, and even though I am 34, I still learned from the book. History class teaches about the widely known historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, but I liked that lesser known people like Guion Bluford and Mae C Jemison, the first African American man and women in space, were highlighted as well.
I love this book! Little information, but a huge one to remember in our hearts! This is an Inspirational alphabet book for young readers filled with vibrant illustration and empowering words. A must-have book, and ideal library resource in relate to Black history month.
Oh my, I loved this book. It’s chock full of role models in just about every sphere of life, showcasing Black excellence! I could see this being such a good resource, introducing kids to new ideas and figures while also being a conversation starter for families. From A to Z, this book hums with pride and joy.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I am going to buy this for my kids for sure.
I thought it was perfect! It give you a little bit of everything within black history for kids. Kids really do not have the best attention span and this was perfect. I gives them little facts and opens them up to asking more about it. The pictures were amazing and bright.
