I am going to buy this for my kids for sure.

I thought it was perfect! It give you a little bit of everything within black history for kids. Kids really do not have the best attention span and this was perfect. I gives them little facts and opens them up to asking more about it. The pictures were amazing and bright.

Wow this was beautiful, informative, lovely, etc etc.

As a non person of colour I don’t usually like reviewing books like these or books by people of colour as I don’t want to step on toes or get anything wrong.

As a White British individual I am always trying to educate myself further into history of people of colour, different ethnicities, cultures, religion, etc. This book just seemed absolutely perfect to me.

It’s an easy read, extremely child friendly and the illustrations were beautiful. I really really enjoyed the touch of adding individuals names below/alongside each illustration. It was such a quick informative read packed with lots of information. The cherry on top was the timeline and extra information at the end!

Perfect for any audience whether it be children or as a starter for older children, teenagers and adults to set them up to partake in more research and further education.

As a non-American, ABC's Black History and Me is a fantastic introduction to important black historical figures, important historical events and settings on Black History beginning from the 1800s. With simple text, it explores early events such as the abolition of slavery to the civil rights movement and important milestones through black history (rights, freedoms, achievements). It also has a timeline of events at the end, with some extra info too. Everyone should keep a copy of this book at home and it is great resource for children to learn names that have become solidified throughout history.

ABC Black History and Me is a great introduction to historical Black figures. There are many well-known figures included, but also some less commonly featured folks like Sophia Danenberg. This would be a great launch point for a lower grade biography or research project. I also love the inclusion of a timeline at the end of the book, to help give young readers a stronger sense of time. The illustrations are adorable!

Monyei's book should be required reading in schools everywhere. With its beautiful art and easy-to-understand language, this book teaches kids bite-size bits of vital information about Black American history. We learn about leaders from history as well as the current day. I love that this will introduce kids to many new people and concepts that can propel them to further learning. I will be buying a copy for my classroom too!

This book highlights so many important members of the Black community and why they are so important, as well as discussing things like hair, knowledge, laughter, melanin, NYC, teachers, and more! The timeline in the back provided a way to enhance the story by giving children some insight and specific names to attach importance to. I can't wait to read this to my students!

ABC Black History and Me has gorgeous illustrations and packs so much great content into the classic board book style.

This follows the same ABC rhythm that we see in a lot of books. It has bright colors and lots of different things on the page that can make reading so much more fun. It’s a great mix of common words that a lot of kids would know and some more precise vocabulary. That’s great to introduce some of the more complex pieces in an easy to understand format.

It also highlights many individuals in Black History. It includes a timeline at the end that helps you walk through all of the different time periods discussed in the book.

Often times these types of books are meant for older students, but this one in particular is perfect for young children. I could even see my 14 month old nephew enjoy this book. It would be a perfect addition to his library.

This book is wonderful. It contains people, places, concepts & events relating to black history. It's perfect for children of all races. After the ABCs it has a little timeline of black history. The art is cute. I would purchase a physical copy of this book.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley

This is a great book for young children. The colours are vibrant and the illustrations are engaging. Each page has a short verse on a subject, and the names of some people who are famed for that subject. As a non-child, it gave me information that will promote more research into some of these historical figures who I hadn't heard of before. For my toddler, it was a great introduction to Black History Month. The last page with the timeline was an excellent reference and really tied everything together.

My only comments would be that sometimes the rhymes were a little awkward, and (spoiler alert? Is that a thing for board books?) xenial was a new word for me -- I would've loved to have the definition in the book instead of googling it.

Thank you to netgalley for an advance ecopy for review.

I absolutely love these types of books. It's true I am not exactly the target demographic, as I am not a young child, but I still really enjoyed this book. Its educational and highlights amazing Black men and women like Maya Angelou, Ruby Bridges, Barack Obama, and Wilma Rudolph. It is an excellent introduction to black history for young readers.

The illustrations are beautiful and each page has a sentence containing a rhyme that explains the page. It also has the names written next to the people they highlight throughout the book. At the ending, there is a timeline that organizes the information contained on the A to Z pages.

This book is so important not just for black children, but I believe it is beneficial for children of other races as well. Too often black history is glossed over, and even though I am 34, I still learned from the book. History class teaches about the widely known historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, but I liked that lesser known people like Guion Bluford and Mae C Jemison, the first African American man and women in space, were highlighted as well.
