A woman accidentally inherits a hotel - love and hijinks ensure.
This was a perfectly pleasant book. I can honestly say it made me sigh wistfully that I was not also on a Greek island trapped with a beautiful man. That being sad. Wow did this protagonist agonize a lot over... well.. everything. It was frankly frustrating to me. She seemed to fabricate issues where there were none. I spent a majority of this book wanting to clunk their heads together while screaming COMMUNICATE BETTER.
I found the supporting characters mostly bland, they felt like props without significant depth and/or at times were frankly annoying and/or repulsive.
I also had a very difficult time jiving with the main character after she leaves her purported best friend completely high and dry in literally the first two chapters.
Overall I just did not find her likeable.
In summary the setting is fabulous! I feel the need to travel. But the characters were frustrating and unlikeable and there was not enough humor OR romance to compensate for either.
If this book had been classified as YA, maybe I would have less of an issue with it. I found the Main Characters very childish when they are both in their 30's. It was also very slow and repetitive; I think 100 pages less would have been good to avoid the same topics over and over. This book was just not for me.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for a fair review.
I enjoyed this book and loved that the island was almost its own character. The relationship between the two main characters was well written and also the secondary characters were well defined. It was a great summer read! I would love a sequel.
"The Second Chance Hotel" is a sweet romantic comedy that delivers: a captivating meet-cute, endearing characters, stunning scenery, and a heartwarming journey of love and self-discovery. I enjoyed the character journey of the protagonist Olivia. Whether you're a fan of the genre or simply looking for an uplifting read, this book is bound to leave you with a smile on your face and a longing for a getaway to the enchanting landscapes of Greece.
This book literally had me checking flights to Greece and staring longingly at travel photos on Instagram.
Amelia is fired from her job after throwing a mug at a coworker who happens to be an ex. She decides to take a trip to Paris using tickets bought for a trip with her ex. As she leaving the office after being escorted out, she calls her bestie Ella and let's her know she's heading to the airport. Ella's upset because she's getting married in three weeks and Amelia can't say for sure that she will be back in time. Ella ends the friendship on the call. Amelia goes to Paris. Three months later, Amelia is still traveling and has headed to Greece to visit a hotel in Asteri that her mother has always told her about. This is where the story really begins. She meets Takis the owner and then another guest named James and the adventure begins.
I am very happy to say that my mind has been changed about Sierra Godfrey thanks to The Second Chance Hotel since I wasn't a big fan of A Very Typical Family. This book was leaps and bounds above AVTF in terms of plotting! The character development improved as well. I'm so glad I stuck with this author and was able to see her true talent shine through in this second effort. There still was some suspension of disbelief required in this one, and times when I had to force myself not to question a particular plot point and just go with it, but nothing that was so over-the-top that it took away my enjoyment of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for letting me read an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
As an interior designer, I loved the fact that a hotel is inherited, a different twist to the plot but two characters that you want to root for to be together, or maybe you won't. On a remote island in Grease, this story will take you to a place you hope to visit one day!
Well, the Second Chance Hotel was such a pleasant little read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It had:
🫒 A beautiful island setting,
🫒 New found friends,
🫒 Strangers to lovers,
🫒 Accidental marriage,
🫒 Will they, won't they, and
🫒 Second chances!
Amelia Lang just threw a mug of hot tea at her ex-boyfriends head, AT work. Needless to say, Amelia gets fired from her job. She decides to leave it all behind and take her severance and travel through Europe.
She ends her holiday on a small Greek island at a hotel that is falling apart. But the views are stunning, and she is there for a couple of quiet weeks before she heads back home and to her other life. But, there is one other guest at the hotel, another American, James. Who happens to be single and very good looking!
The two of them spend a glorious time exploring the island together, and after one drunken day, they end up accidentally married and accidentally owning a hotel.
This story was told exclusively from Amelia's POV. I thought it would have been nice to get James' POV, although I understand that this is Amelia's story. It's just that you get so much insight into how Amelia feels about James, but I was left really wishing to know what James' real thoughts were on his relationship with Amelia.
I absolutely loved the descriptions of life for James and Amelia on the island. It was all so vivid, the scenery, the food, the friendships!
The point of the story was certainly the adventure Amelia was on, and this idea of reinventing oneself and doing what's truly going to make you happy in life. But that also included finding love, and I found myself really enjoying the romance aspect of this story.
I definitely recommend for anyone who likes a good second chance story and some romance with a little bit of spice.
Give this book the award for the most bizarre and hilarious circumstances ever possible. I loved how adrenaline-filled and crazy the situation were when Amelia & James got roped into marrying each other AND getting the possession of a run-down hotel.
Honestly, this book was like a breath of fresh air; very refreshing, calming & enjoyable. James & Amelia's chemistry was undeniable. All the shenanigans they went through were epic. It's definitely a fun vacation read!

Oh my gosh, loved this! There was some ridiculous parts but nothing over the top. I loved the slow burn romance and the book was definitely giving Mama Mia vibes.
I would gladly trade places with Amelia. Like it is my literal dream to drop everything, move to Greece, and give an old hotel some TLC. The side characters were just the right amount of quirky and endearing and I liked how community was such a strong theme in this (all the different Yorgos was such a fun detail)!
This is the perfect escapist novel to wrap up the Summer. Fair warning- it will have you itching to book a ticket right now to explore the quiet islands of Greece.

4.5/5 ⭐️
I loved the entire premise of this book, and it was one that I hadn't heard of before. Rom-com in Greece? Yes please. I always enjoy a slow burn as well in the romance storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope to read more by Sierra Godfrey.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC of The Second Chance Hotel.
This was an okay read. Amelia was a bit spacey for me and I didn't find myself enjoying her, which took away from the story for me. I did love the aspect of the inheriting a hotel, IN GREECE, and taking on the responsibility of having to figure out how to successfully run said hotel. I love a good rom-com with a solid slow burn, but this one was slowwwwww. I am talking snail's pace. Not my favorite, but I would certainly like to read another book by this author.
Thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark, Netgalley and the author for an ARC of this book. I am leaving this unbiased review voluntarily.
This contemporary romance centres on a young woman who finds herself in Greece after effectively running away from real life. There she meets an attractive nerd called James who is also on holiday. They are caught in a bizarre circumstance and end up married and owning a run down hotel, and in the process of running it, fall in love.
If that sounds a little implausible, well, it is. Although the author does a fairly good job of creating the perfect storm that sees these two travellers bound in holy matrimony, I did find myself noticing that I was suspending my disbelief a little.
The wonderful supporting cast of this book makes up for any strange plot devices though. I especially loved Birgitte and Alexandra straight away.
Amelia is a different story - I wasn't sure at all whether I liked her, but I am glad I stuck with her character as her evolution was lovely to read.
The only character that didn't really work for me was James. The other personalities jump out of the page, but for me, James wasn't a fully drawn character. I liked the banter between Amelia and James and the physical connection is apparent, but as we only get Amelia's side of the story, I found James hard to get a read on.
All in all this was a largely enjoyable read that captured the essence of Greek island life with a little nostalgia thrown in.
This was an easy breezy fun read! I loved it! As someone who works a similar job to Amelia in a corporate setting, her adventures and ultimate taking over the hotel are so aspirational and inspiring. Does someone want to leave me a hotel in their will because I would gladly take it over?!?! In all seriousness, thanks for the great novel and I am so excited to tell all of my friends to get their hands on a copy soon.
Thank you netgalley for an ARC of The Second Chance Hotel.
I post a lot of good reviews because I always feel a little guilty when I don’t enjoy a book- especially an ARC. This one just did not hit home for me. I instantly disliked the main character and really didn’t care for the story or the predictability of it all. In the middle, I started to care a little more but felt the story dragged on and I mostly wanted it to be over.
The writing- good. 4/5! The storyline itself may not have been for me - however, I feel that I would read another book by Godfrey with an open mind! Godfrey also does a good job of creating a character you can picture - I could visualize Amelia's character and her flighty behavior etc.
THOUGHTS ON THE STORY:
When I think about the premise for this book - I thought I'd be reading something a little more lighthearted and fresh feeling... what we have, however, is a bit too much of an unlikeable 'heroine'.
I don't think all unlikable female characters have to have a perfect redemption - but there is a way to choose oneself without rationalizing hurting other people. The first 30% took quite a bit to get through, and while I understand it was about a journey to self-discovery... the character leaving behind her BFF the way she did really struck me as off-putting and made it hard to like her later. Mistakes are one thing, but justifying it and leaving things hanging for a while didn't give me the warm, sunny, idyllic Greek island vibes I was looking for.
**Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Landmark & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
An entertaining escape read of two people, who have experience past hurts and have been running from life. After traveling, they both end up at a run down Greek hotel. Things get interesting when they somehow find themselves married and have the hotel bequeath to them. Their journey of figuring out how to run a hotel and accommodate guests, as well as get to know each other had me turning the pages. I enjoyed reading how their unlikely friendship turning into love. I also liked the quirky and close-knit community. A fun, entertaining summer read!
I was provided an early ebook addition of this title for review through NetGalley.
I had a very hard time getting into this book. I felt the beginning dragged, and everyone (including the main character) were slightly irritating. By the middle is when I really started getting into it and then quickly finished the rest. I liked the idea of the story and I do like my romcom books, but this may not be one that I would pick up again. I would suggest this title if you like a slow and confusing burn and I mean SLOW. I will still be ordering this title for our collection because again, I feel like it wasn't a bad book, just not my personal favorite.
My pros: I loved the descriptions of Greece and all of the new characters that our introduced in the book! It also gave a great description of customs and culture as well, which I originally didn't know very much about.
It also made me want to plan a trip there as soon as humanly possible. So warning, you're going to want to travel after this book.
I adored this sweet, gripping, and romantic novel! A rare romance that had me hooked from page one, with unexpected turns and nothing stereotypical. THE SECOND CHANCE HOTEL will make you yearn for a spontaneous trip to Greece, and I loved getting lost in the rich, vivid setting the author paints for the reader.
The set-up is a bit over the top, and it takes a while for the plot to crescendo, but once it does this book truly sings. Long story short, Amelia finds herself unexpectedly married to a fellow American traveler after a drunken night in a picturesque Greek village. Come to find out, a wedding present was the tiny bed and breakfast they have been staying at by the owner who decided they were meant to be, both as romantic partners and hotel owners. Amelia was only planning on backpacking through Europe for a few months, and Greece was her last stop, but she is jobless, unenthused about her life in San Francisco, and is maybe having feeling for his mysterious American she's now married to?
Like I said - what!? It's surprising and adorable, and has a fantastic cast of characters. You'll only wish the town the main characters become a part of was not fictional because I would love to visit! A truly perfect summer book to enjoy with a tasty cocktail on the side.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Second Chance Hotel by Sierra Godfrey.
This book was a delightful read that transported me to Greece (a bucket list vacation for me!) with its beautiful setting and well-developed characters. The push-pull tension in the main character Amelia's relationship with James was particularly engaging and the lovable group of side characters added to the story's charm. With elements of romance, friendship drama, family drama, and humor, this book has something for everyone. This was a perfect beach read...now if only I could have read it on a beach in Greece! :)
