Meg and Cat are on a girls night out on the anniversary of the death of Meg’s brother. The evening ends in tragedy and the book jumps ahead a year in a way that I found disjointed and confusing.
Overall, it’s an ok, easy read but one that, for me, was difficult to follow and with characters that weren’t sufficiently likeable or interesting to make me care.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon books for the opportunity to preview.
Cat and Meg have a great night out in Bristol, but the journey home turns into a nightmare. They have no money left and are forced to walk but on their route home they soon realize that they are not alone. They run for their lives, finding an abandoned building in which to hide, hoping that help will come before it’s too late. This starts out as a deadly game of cat and mouse which at times has tension levels so high you can scarcely breathe. The girls scary walk home is fear ridden and is palpable. There are some terrifying scenes where you just hope for the best. Overall, the book was slower than it should’ve been for the action throughout but it’s an interesting and unique story. #NETGALLEY #THEBLACKOUT
In "The Blackout" by Sarah Goodwin, fans of psychological thrillers are in for a treat. With skillful storytelling and jaw-dropping twists, Goodwin delivers a gripping and addictive read that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
The novel sets off with a harrowing night in Bristol, where Meg and Cat's lives are forever changed as they flee from unknown pursuers and seek refuge in an abandoned building. Fast forward a year, and the haunting repercussions of that night still linger, as Meg finds herself in Norfolk, desperately trying to escape the shadows of her past. The tension intensifies as a stormy night plunges her safehouse into darkness, and the dangerous presence she thought she had outrun emerges once more.
Goodwin's ability to craft an eerie atmosphere adds to the novel's creepy allure, and her well-developed characters evoke empathy and support from readers. "The Blackout" is a compelling, rollercoaster ride of a thriller that solidifies Sarah Goodwin's place among the genre's best authors.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley
Two young women are going out partying in Bristol, and their night has a brutal end. One of them runs away from it all, only to be found a year later by the people who has been looking for her. Will she find a way out?
It is a fairly easy read, and the story moves forward, but it still was a bit too much on the surface for me. I did not really warm up to any of the characters, didn't really "get to know them". I felt that the story could have used a bit more depth,
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. The premise was unique, the characters were sympathetic and interesting, and there were completely unexpected twists. However, the last portion really fell flat for me. (Caution: vague spoilers ahead) Throughout the last third or so, Megan is constantly ruminating on guilt, redemption, and revenge. It becomes extremely repetitive, especially because she never seems to have an epiphany or come to any conclusions. The ending and (somewhat unclear) epilogue are unsatisfying.
I enjoyed Sarah Godwin’s Stranded quite a bit more than this one. I did enjoy parts of this one and just wish I wasn’t so disappointed in the ending.
A tense chilling psychological thriller.Drew me in from first to last page.So many twists and turns kept me guessing.Looking forward to more by Sarah Goodwin,#netgalley #avonbooksuk
Such a good book, it had me hooked from page one and kept me on the edge of my seat. So many twists and turns i did not see coming, 100% recommend if your looking for a fast and easy read.
If you want to read something that's thrilling and keeps you on the edge of your seat this is the book for you. I found myself waking up in the middle of the night to read. Meg and Cat are best friends that are out on the town. However, the night ends horribly with one girl running for her life and looking over her shoulder.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC The Blackout by Sarah Goodwin.
This book grabbed me from the very beginning. It’s a fast paced, edge of your seat thriller full of suspense and intrigue. It held my attention throughout and kept me wanting more. A definite read for fans of thrillers. You won’t be disappointed.
Megan is in hiding in a dilapidated cottage at the edge of a cliff.
She has run away after a terrible incident that happened one year ago in her home town.
Now people are after her and she is scared for her life.
A thriller with a story that kept me on the edge of my set, with plenty of action and scary situations.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is not the type of book I would normally read and I had to stop reading it at night because the author did a great job of creeping me out and hearing noises that weren’t there! I picked it back up in the morning and read it in one sitting.
I can’tsay that I liked the MC, though she was paying for an awful mistake she had made years earlier. I did enjoy the cat and mouse chase and felt I was there with her. I enjoyed the story but I hated the epilogue. I wished I hadn’t read it because I felt that not only did it not add anything, actually it detracted from the rest of the book.
This super-exciting read is as suspenseful as it gets. Meg is hiding in a dilapidated cabin in the middle of nowhere, but she’s still actively trying to avoid… something. What that is, is unclear, but it may have to do with the night that she and her friend got chased by two guys in a dodgy neighborhood after a night of partying. We also know that she’s responsible for two deaths, including her friend. The plot explains why, as she is running for her life. This part is exceedingly suspenseful, because it happens in the middle of a storm, during a blackout. Meg thought that she was John McClane and soon it’s clear that she isn’t. She has to use her wits to outsmart whatever is happening. I liked Meg a lot. She is not super-human and has doubts, but she’s also trying hard to fight for her life. She knows her limitations and doesn’t dwell on them excessively, but tries to overcome them. I enjoyed the twists although I must say that I didn’t understand the ending. A good novel.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Avon Books UK, Avon!
This was a good story, but I felt that the book dragged a bit while reading. It centers on Meg, who is hidden away after experiencing a tragedy; she knows that there are people out to get her and it’s only a matter of time before they figure out where she is. When it all comes to a head, the rest of the book is a cat and mouse game between Meg and her assailants.
The style of the story worked for me, where you get alternating chapters about what happened in the past that piece together the story of the current situation. The villains are truly horrible people and I found it chilling that there are people out there like that. I got bogged down a bit by so much of the narrative being in Meg’s head- that took away from the action for me. The end of the book worked though I did think it was drawn out a bit.
Overall, the book was slower than it should’ve been for the action throughout but it’s an interesting and unique story. I’d give it 3.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was just not the book for me. I really did not appreciate the writing style and just couldn't get into it. Because things were working for me I did DNF this one.
I will not be leaving reviews outside of netgalley as I did not finish.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review. I wish the book all the success.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC in an exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
For me this book honestly was really good in parts and dragged on in others. It just didn’t quite deliver and give the usual pace of a thriller i typically read.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Cat and Meg are on a night out in Bristol, when they realise they’re skint and are forced to walk home. They realise they’re not alone, and run into an abandoned building to keep safe and wait it out.
Then we move forward a year where one of those women is dead and another one in Norfolk hiding but trying to move on. And we soon realise the danger is still there, and during a storm, she is discovered.
This was the first story I’d read from this author and I was quite surprised. I enjoyed the storyline, which was well written and strong. The characters were well written and I felt I was cheering them on.
The story had a creepy feel to it, and the setting often heightened that factor.
A great, solid, read from this author.
Secrets usually always come back to haunt you…
This is a story of secrets, revenge, and survival. I really liked how the book flipped back and forth from the present to the past. With the scenes of the past you get glimpses into how Megan got herself into her current dire situation. It keeps you guessing and the secrets slowly spill out and come to light. There are so many intense moments and you’ll be on the edge of your seat and desperate to know how everything is going to unfold. The locked room vibes plus a raging storm give the book such an eerie and creepy mood throughout.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Avon for the gifted copy!
